The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

Very solid stuff. For a 44 minute release, it manages to jump between somber guitar/drums improvs, Haino's vocal torments with a percussion back up (both of the title tracks), gorgeous dream-like closer and some noisy fast-paced wanks. I'm mostly glad that Haino's vocal improvs here last the exact time amount they should.

8+/10 easily. Can recommend.

>Jandek - Glasgow Friday

Rep back in Glasgow with Youngs and Nielsen. Guitar/bass/drums trio is at it again!

And yet I feel a bit uncertain about this show. To me it sounded like their first ever performance with a slightly better synchronization between the players. It also lacks the shocking punch that was the first live appearance from the Rep as a statement of its own.

It sounds alright with some cool lyrics and grooves (These Kokomos), but something is lacking. Doesn’t feel as inspired or as “epic” as their first endeavour. The only two things that caught my ear was the theme of the opening Walking Blues and my confusion with the word “Kokomos”. That’s about it. I wish I could say more, but if you heard Rep’s debut performance then you basically know what this one is all about.

So holy fucking shit this match, 2 9/10's in one round and I couldn't even decide which one I like more

Luther recced Nico - The Marble Index
The tension in this thing is beautiful, makes my whole body feel cold, amazing experience, however I didn't really like "No One is There"
9

Lamb/Laurel recced Daniel Figgis - Skipper
This evoked a huge feeling of nostalgia within me, there were a few weaker tracks but the best ones really really stood out, absolutely magical.
9

I thought and thought and I still couldn't decide which was better, so I am needing of an EP from Luther and Lamb, for a tiebreaker, can be any genre.

been neglecting this chart

I like the Copeland a lot, especially the vocal tracks. Really strong atmosphere through the album.
Vespertine I like a lot, probably one of my favorite Bjork albums. I have to listen to it more though. I like the consistent feel of the tracks, which I haven't really gotten from another of her albums.

The Hecker album is nice, it didn't really strike me as amazing but it's a nice ambient experience. I have never really gotten much from his music. Maybe I need to give his other albums another chance.

so uhh, I'm really starting to doubt myself because I kinda enjoyed this. it's all guilty pleasure tier pop trap bangers (even for trap rap these beats are fucking loud) presented with a fittingly bratty arogance. Some of these beats are a lil too skeletal for my taste (usually just 808s + bass + a synth or midi sounding piano loop) but usually it works rather well. It's catchy and it makes me wanna get wasted, what else could I want from a pop rap record?
Yellow / it's cool.

>where'd you find this out?
A song of his came on my car Playlist and Daniel started going off about how william tyler has weak melodies and how his technique isn't that good. He said a lot of guitar guys in the scene, especially older ones, hate him because he's like a Nashville rich boy who doesn't know shit about real coutcry or blues. They say his accent is even fake. Daniel's friends call him 'catfish' cause he's got a weird face .

They also used to call James Blackshaw, 'James Fatshaw' cause they didn't like him much either

Essentially Primitivism guys are 8th grade bullies
>>
>>70015910
>8th grade bullies
That's what I'm saying. As much as I think William Tyler is all right/not particularly my style, that's such a terrible approach to preserving the legacy of a genre that more or less just meant you were untutored.

Basho followed almost none of the perceived rules and is some beloved figure, Kottke followed Fahey pretty closely and people think he kind of sucks.
>>
>>70015910
this is fucking hilarious and I don't know why

i get the criticism though, Tyler's stuff is about as far removed from country and blues you can get while still falling at least somewhat under the primitivism spectrum. and Daniel's a much better player.
>>
>>70016062
I think they mostly don't like him because he's sort of an ass and doesn't respect the roots of the music like other players. And it seems like they've warmed up to Blackshaw.
I think that's the kind of mindset you get into when you get so devoted and passionate about one thing. When you see someone else who is just kind of using your persona to coast without much effort and get lots of recognition for it, it can be pretty frustrating.

That is true about Basho though, and Fahey hated Basho's playing for a long time until it was Alan Wilson I think, that sort of explained it to him.
So you got a good point

>>
>>70010360
I dunno, I've just never been super big on LUM despite loving Memphis hip-hop. He has some great singles but I think he's a bit streaky honestly. That album has some cool ideas but isn't as awesome as I was expecting.

Haven't heard it in a while though, so I'll have to revisit it.

>>70016545
Monk's Music is one of my favorites, that's where I'd start if I were you.

Also be interested in hearing your thoughts on Pictures at an Exhibition. It's been on my backlog forever even though I know nothing about classical music ll. You seem to know your shit so I'm curious to see what you think.
>>
>>70016545
start with shinsekai yori symphony (thats dvorak)
>>
Hey does any of you nerds have Apple Music and if so, could you maybe check if certain albums are available? Or is there like a site to check this? I want to switch from spotify because it integrates better with my stuff, but I have no idea whether the jazz and classical catalogues are anywhere near as good.
>>
>>70016716
>switch
is it not possible to use both?
>>
>>70016746
Meh, that would kind of defeat the purpose of why I want to switch, which is reuniting my music libraries.

>>70016696

Yeah, it's kind of disturbing, even if it is just an ironic joke. The same people who claim a celebrity-obsessed culture gave rise to Donald Trump post Facebook statuses like "go home 2016, you're drunk" every time a celebrity who did something relevant 30 years ago dies. It's a mental condition I think we choose to ignore. Not to mention the terribly unfunny hivemend jokes.
>>

Happy new year!

And yeah I'm friends with him and his sister. His sister lives in the town I go to school in, I met her at a show and she introduced me to him.
I just visited him for a few days and we drank and smoked a bunch and went to abandoned civil war Era houses.

He told me a bunch of shit from his European tour with Ryley Walker
Apparently Ryley did a ton of blow in Denmark and while they were sleeping this Dutch dude came to their room and was pounding on their door screaming "helena". Ryley opened the door in his undies and the dude was like "where is Helena?!". For some reason Ryley got it in his head that this dude was accusing him of raping his gf, so he started going like "hmmm, I don't know, where IS helena??" And went around the room lifting up the rug and looking in drawers going "helena?".
So ryley and the Dutch dude got into a huge shouting match and stormed out
And Daniel was super freaked the cops would get called.

Explosions in the Sky - The Earth is not a Cold Dead Place (2003)

>Post-rock, watered down Godspeed You! Black Emperor

This might have well have been titled "Abosolutely EPIC Post-rock mix 2016!!! MUST LISTEN!!!" because Explosions in the Sky surely don't bother to show any sense of originality, or genuine emotion. Actually, the only track here that might be worth listening to is Memorial. And even if you don't like that (I won't blame you) don't bother because it all sounds the same. Each track shows the same structure, same guitar tones and the same style of drumming to the point where they're basically indistinguishable, besides Memorial. The Earth might not be so, but this is a cold, dead album.

Happy New Years dudes! Bumping with my first review of the year.

Donald Byrd - Ethiopian Nights
>Jazz-Funk, Jazz Fusion

Pretty much everything you’d expect from Byrd in the 70s. It’s funky, dense and pretty massive. There’s tight drum breaks, upbeat guitar licks and some sweet Vibraphone from Bobby Hutcherson. There’s also a piano, organ, trumpet (Byrd), trombone and sax on here so there’s layers and layers of instrumentation on here. All of which is pretty fucking tight.

When jazz-funk goes right, it’s one of the coolest things out there. This style gets watered down far too often but Byrd nails it on here once again. It’s undeniably groovy and catchy but it still feels organic, with lots of improvisation and such. The little drum solo to open up “The Little Rascal” is a perfect example of this. It starts off slow and methodical and transitions seamlessly into this ridiculously funky riff. There’s clear chemistry between these guys and it’s awesome to hear them build off of each other in their solos.

While the tracks sometimes wander on a bit long and “Jamie” is nothing too impressive but all in all, it’s great stuff. I love this shit, great way to start the year.

happy new years guys! it's 2 am and I'm sitting in bed, so here's a quick write up.

Daniel Bachman - Daniel Bachman (2016)
>american primitivism

Bachman's previous release, 2015's River, is a fine album, but one that lacks the tact and restraint that elevates good primitivism into great primitivism. It's incredibly technically impressive, but the pieces rarely breathe and the album seems like more of a showcase for Bachman to display his guitar skills rather than his compositional skills. He's definitely massively improved here. A major undercurrent of drone forms the backbone of nearly the whole album, while minimalistic, simple guitar lines are played over the drones. It may be a bit too static, with a little less of an emphasis on guitar than I'd like, but it's beautiful nonetheless and there's an impressive amount of restraint present in nearly every single piece. He may showcase his raw guitar talent better on other releases, but as a cohesive album this is by far his best, and one of the best of 2016.

>Jandek - Glasgow Sunday 2005

2005. Glasgow again. Sunday again. Sterling Smith brings in high caliber performers for a 2 part set.

Set 1 - The Grassy Knoll.

Participants: Rep on spoken word vocals and harmonica, Loren Connors on guitar.

In case you missed Jandek’s spoken word storytelling, this one is for you. For 25 minutes in total, Sterling talks about what sounds like a cult-organised orgy party gone wrong. If that is not a great premise for a Jandek story, then I don’t know what is. The party seems to end up with our protagonist saving someone at the party itself and falling in love by staring into each others’ eyes. A beautifully romantic and somewhat bitter conclusion to the party.

While Sterling talks about this, we also get a side of Connors playing a lovely set of soundscapes with no high-frequency tones. I enjoy the moments where he raises the strum to make the guitar sound like an upcoming train, but the mellow wanks are just as pleasant. They fit in well with Smith’s harmonica playing that sounds both alarming and rather cheerful at times.

Set 2 - Tribal Ether

Participants: Alan Licht on guitar, Heather Leigh on lap steel guitar/shamanic vocals and Rep on DRUMS

What a treat! A drumming live performance from the representative of Corwood Industries. How about that? A tribal march with simple, yet COHERENT percussion from everyone’s favourite creeper. Throw in an incredible hot lava mix from the strings clash and howling from Heather (I assume, unfortunately couldn’t get a hold of the video recording) to get one of the greatest things with a Jandek tag behind it. It’s a gorgeous piece. The line up doesn’t waste the potential. I’m not surprised that the final set of applause sounds just as “wild” as the performance itself.

The two performances are really good. The first set gets slightly overindulgent with Sterling’s singing by the end of the piece, but I think this is definitely one of the most successful live releases from the Rep so far. Listen to it.

Björk - Vespertine (2001)
>art pop, electronic

I might prefer the cold, dark vibe of Homogenic more, but Björk, obviously a multitalented artist, does this warmer, lusher style incredibly well. The themes of romance and sex permeate every track here, and Björk's vocal performances are fittingly passionate. "Cocoon", while explicit, is more tender and romantic, and Björk's vocals take on a delicate falsetto that fit the song perfectly. "Pagan Poetry", more brunt and more about the visceral aspects of sex, features a fittingly loud and energetic vocal performance. The vocals may be the album's most striking aspect, but the instrumentals are great as well. They work themselves into a bit of a creative rut in the second hat, overusing the synthetic strings and taking on more of a passive, less interesting sound, but all of the beats on the first half are immaculate. "Cocoon", once again, features really crackly, lo-fi percussion (which I love), and "It's Not Up to You" has one of the sunniest, lushest beats I've ever heard. It takes a dip in the second half, but overall it's a really damn good album, affirming Björk's status as one of the most interesting pop musicians out there.

Felix Labland - Dark Days Exit
>Downtempo

Mellow, gorgeous and approachable - just how I like em. The atmosphere is so nice, it’s almost charming in a way. I wouldn’t quite call this ambient because there are touches of dance/other electronic genres… but it gets close at times. The tracks are slow-building and subtle, which I loved. Labland adds in little details from time to time and builds them into heavier, layered tracks by their conclusion. Right when I think the song is getting boring or repetitive, he switches it up.

The vocal samples are also a terrific little touch - I’m a huge sucker for that in most genres. The synths on “Miss Teardrop” are godly and paired with the xylophone (?) lead to such a nice groove. Overall, this is nice chill out music, very enjoyable. It’s a longer than it should be, but this is quite entertaining for the most part.

>Matthew Revert - Not You
I don't who made the comment, but someone compared this to Sun Kil Moon. Nowhere near it. This album gives off a feeling of ugly smugness to me. The spoken word is obnoxious with the fact that Matthew is basically shoving the microphone in his mouth, almost likes it's some bad ASMR. The most entertaining components of the album were the field recordings of voicemails and the little bits of acoustic guitar. Honestly, I would have preferred an album made out of that, and maybe some of the spoken word bits that Matthew does. But much of the field recordings and recording quality bogs down the good component to virtually nothing. I like Musique concrete, and tape music, but this was really irritating.

Swans - The Glowing Man (2016)
>experimental rock, post-rock

A tired retread of what the band accomplished on the wonderful To Be Kind, and a tedious, boring farewell to the band's most recent incarnation. To Be Kind (I've actually never heard The Seer, so I can't compare this to that) was epic and heavy as all hell, but it always managed to feel organic. All of its tracks flowed perfectly, and Gira's vocals were immediate, raw, and passionate. The album's longer tracks also felt like they had a sense of purpose, there were build-ups and there were cathartic releases. Every positive characteristic present in To Be Kind is almost entirely gone here. So many tracks feel like they consist of one loop repeated ad nauseum, there's no variation whatsoever in a lot of these tracks, and the heavy sections, good as they may be taken in small doses, appear out of nowhere and seem like they're shoehorned in just to add a phony sense of "epicness" to the music. Gira's vocals are droning and monotonous, completely lacking the screaming passion he's displayed on so many other Swans albums. The longer tracks also entirely lack build-ups or any real tact or restraint, different sections and sounds just crash into each other without a care. I have to give credit to the shorter, folkier songs, they're among the most original tracks Swans have done in the past couple of years, but disregarding them, this album is a massive disappointment.

Graham Lambkin - Community (2016)
>musique concrète, sound collage

Another 2016 album by an artist I absolutely adore that's just kinda eh. Salmon Run may be one of my favorite albums of all time, but this album, as wonderful as its concept may be, lacks the deliberateness of Salmon Run's sampling, and the care put into the crafting of its collages. The theme focuses on communities and how they function, how they respond to loss, and how they respond to change (at least that's what I got from it). As wonderful as this concept may sound, beyond a few vocal samples the music itself does very little to address it. So many different sources are used to create these collages, but nothing really fits together. They're all interesting to listen to, mainly because some of the samples and sources work really well to evoke an emotional response (the cello playing "My Bonnie" on the last track is lovely), but they're ultimately haphazard and not nearly as careful as the collages on Salmon Run. The high-pitched noises present throughout the whole album certainly aren't doing it any justice either. A misfire from an otherwise great musician.

>Built to Spill - Live

This was a pretty nice live album. It is really just epic jamming though, so beware—both “Broken Chairs” and their cover of Young’s “Cortez the Killer” really test your patience at 20 minutes each. Obviously the guitar work on here is amazing, but it all kind of blurs after so much of the same.

Also, the audio quality is shockingly crisp. Damn near studio level, really. And considering the live versions of these songs sound incredibly similar to their studio counterparts (though you have to respect the practice that must have required) I’m not sure how much this album is really worth, even to an avid fan.

That being said, at least the live version of “Randy Described Eternity” here packs a much harder punch, and is loads more intense here than on Perfect From Now On. Would highly rec giving that a listen at least.

I think I'm going to listen to this some time, but I can't even imagine how bored I'll have to be. I just have zero interest in another two hour Swans album. Anything catchy on it like on TBK? Iron & Wine - The Creek Drank the Cradle (2002)
>contemporary folk, singer/songwriter

A very simple album, and one that's been done a million times before, but Beam does what he does incredibly well. His whispery voice, as singular as it may be, is beautiful, and it fits the delicate yet technical guitar arrangements perfectly. The lo-fi production really adds a lot, it feels incredibly intimate, like these songs were recorded in one go with a tape recorder and a guitar. Nothing amazing, but a damn fine, super cozy album.

Basic Channel - BCD (1995)

>Ambient Techno, Minimal Techno

This is an album that knows exactly what its doing, and it does it very, very well. Despite the nature of the music, I found myself engaged the entire time, and I noticed many subtle evolutions throughout the tracks. Perhaps what's most interesting about BCD is that it succeeds at both being ambient and dance music; I was simultaneously relaxed and tapping my foot the entire time. At the same time, nothing on this album is going to shock you, or even be very interesting. That might sound contradictory, being thoroughly engaged but not interested, but listen to this and you'll understand. Also, fade-outs annoy the hell out of me.
