Reminder that obsessing over pedals and tone does not make you a better guitarist. it's why you're not very good....
>>
Looking for a second guitar and not sure what to get. Tried a Tele for a while but the twang was not for me. I already have a Strat but I think I may just buy another as back up.

>>69919060
I didn't play with any pedals for years then I tried a multi one to mess with tones but hated it so much. I like the straight amp sound, and maybe an OD pedal but just for a volume boost.

If you don't have a guitar with humbuckers it'd be worth going that route imo. What's the point of buying the same model of guitar? You gig a lot?

P90's are literal /mu/ meme tier. They are very niche and will restrict your sound by entire centuries. Just purchase yourself a decent Telecaster and you will be set. There is no instrument more versatile than the Fender Telecaster.

How do I fix buzz

I've been learning on an Epi LP Special II for about a year and I am getting increasingly annoyed by buzzing when I pick the 6th string, either open or fretting the lower notes. I set the action higher (though it wasn't very low in the first place) and it's still happening.

It doesn't seem to be my playing, as I'm not getting it with other guitars I sometimes play.

Bonus question is should I get a PRS SE as my second electric or save money for something more based
>>
>>69921950
Sounds like the nut slots are cut too low. You have to replace the nut, most luthiers will do this for about $40. You could do it yourself but you'll probably have to ruin a few nuts to get it perfect if it's your first time + you have to buy the nut files.

you might have to level the frets but I'm pretty it's just an improperly cut nut.

Got a link for that chink luthier? How much did it cost you? I remember theres a Chinese company that makes pretty good custom hollow bodies for cheap but I forgot the website. I think I read it in a /gg/ thread or some forum

I saw a video where someone stuck a piece of guitar string in the nut below the actual string to make it higher.

I did the metal band thing from 16 - 21 yrs old and enjoyed it a lot. Then filled in for pop punk bands and sold a lot of my gear. Now all I have is my Fender Tele and a Mesa Dual Rectifier. Realizing if I want to start gigging again straight away, the easiest genre / most fun for least effort is gonna be going back to metal stuff for me.. So I'm in the market for a 2nd guitar with active humbuckers.

. .So I'm looking at Schecter, Ibanez, Jackson and I'm really liking Schecter guitars for most bang for the buck. I'm not a floyd rose fan, and with schecter I can get a thru-neck guitar with EMG's and they look and feel great for under 400 bucks. I don't see many other guitar companies offering as much for that low of a cost. The C1 Platinum is a good example of what I'm talking about. This guitar pictured though is for sale on my local craigslist, I'm hoping its still available, $350 bucks!? Hell yeah
>>
>>69922325
Yeah, I've got a Damien with passive EMG's and a Jackson Soloist X with active EMG's and I'm seriously considering ripping the actives out for Bare Knuckles. I love the Jackson and I played the hell out of the Schecter. They're both decent instruments for the price.
>>
>>69921592
Some of the new Gibbos have some Rosewood alternative thing, and it looks like garbage.
>>
>>69921950
With an Epi LP Special it's probably not worth spending any money to fix an issue like that, you're better off just moving on to a better guitar.

Also, PRS are a meme here but the SE's are great guitars for the price.

Too lazy to get an image, but D'Addario prosteels. I wish they made balanced tension prosteels though.

>>69922851
Should have started on the C major, it makes more sense in a theorical context as it has no accidentals.
Barre chords probably seem easier because you usually hold them longer before changing them, while power chords can get hectic in some cases.
>>
>>69922599
>Bare Knuckles
I've never played on those pickups, I'll hafta check em out in person somewhere sometime. The only thing I don't like about the Damien is the bolt on neck. I definitely notice a difference in sustain. I've had guitars in the past where I've used Seymour Duncan Blackouts on one guitar, and EMG's on another and I love the tone for heavy guitars. But gotta keep my tele for everything else
>>
>>69922977
whats the difference between regular and balanced tension?
>>
>>69922977
>accidentals

what?
>>
>>69923051
Flat and sharp notes
>>
>>69922990
Regular sets of strings have some kind of arbitrary decision on the gauges, while the balanced tension match the gauge with the tension so that it stays equal across all strings.
It's kinda niche though the difference between the two isn't huge, but it's nice having the same response everywhere, for bending or dynamics.

>>69923051
accidentals are the sharps or flats you place before the measure so you know which key you're in, in the key of C (= C major), there are none.
>>
>>69923069
Strings guy here, cheers for the explanation, I saw the balanced tension version when ordering my strings the other day but decided against it, sounds like a nice idea but I'm not to fussy about it

>>69923619
the reason why I purchased a legit ESP Viper is because I've already owned two LTD Viper 7 strings (the 407 and 417). I disliked both because of the shitty pickups (81-7 EMGs sound awful), fretboard (cheap rosewood vs. ebony) and construction (Indonesia vs. Japan).

The ESP looks better, plays better, sounds better, and feels better. Anyone who says the LTDs sound "the same" or "no different" don't know what they're talking about.

In my experience with recording and gigging, the biggest factors in quality of sound are the amp head, the pickups, whether the guitar is a bolt on neck or if its set neck, the microphone used on the cab (even different sm57s have slight variations in sound) ... after all of that would come things like cabinet (since almost everyone uses birch construction with celestion 30s), then very last would be wood of guitar body, gold plated cables, fresh strings, etc.

I've played on both and it wouldn't be worth the difference in cost. If I had money to burn and all my other equipment was top notch, sure, go ahead and throw away 600 or 700 bucks more to have the ESP name on the neck and feel pride in knowing your guitar wasn't made in a 3rd world country. But if you laid down a track with your ESP viper, then plugged in an LTD 1000 and laid down the same track, and someone played em back for you I bet you couldnt tell the difference. And if someone blindfolded you and had you play the two guitars, you probably couldn't tell a difference.
>>
>>69922168
I would think that would cause all kinds of friction and tuning problems. You ideally want all the contact points between the string and the guitar's hardware to be as low friction as possible for better tuning stability.

Does it really make a difference what scales you learn from a practical point of view? surely you just learn the patterns for the different types (ie major, the minors, pentatonic and other niche shit) and just play into whatever key you want. Accidentals are only unique when it comes to notating them.

Do all my selling off Reverb and in the past year I've owned over 40+ guitars. My entire rig costs $5000 but due to all the profits I made it was only $1,200 out of pocket. Patience is key and knowing your market is key, I dealt in Fenders in rare colors and rare models where there's a scarce market and I sell $10-$20 less than the next guy but first making sure I profit at least $100 from how much I got it.

Go to Guitar Center, buy a pedal, try it out at home, and return it. If you liked it but it used or a clone, if not repeat with another pedal. Who is better, Steve Vai or Kevin Shields? Not saying there is a correct answer, but I certainly enjoy the way Kevin Shields plays more than Vai. I think Shields is more creative in his pursuit of tone and style over technicality and I think that sound is just as honorable a pursuit as technical ability. Of course people who copy him and just use a shit ton of reverb because "that's what shoegaze is" are just as lazy and unimaginative as the mindless shredders who can play a million notes a minute.

>>
>>69927835
>Oh right. But you usually write NOTE flat, not flat NOTE
True, but I think his idea was to just write the 12 note chromatic scale linearly but with hyphens representing enharmonic notes. Like he's essentially drawing a diagram of the piano keyboard but with hyphens representing the black keys.

By that I assume you mean changing keys as a solo guitarist? That just comes from practice with a little help of similar voiced chords to subtle down the individual half steps.

Can't go wrong with simply learning pentatonic scales and minor relativity (circle of fifths). Chord structuring, knowing what goes where and all that jazz will come naturally.

picking hand.

also there's an argument you should utilise it, but if John Williams doesn't then I don't see much reason too either.

That pedal sucks
>>
>>69930230
Other musicians should be the last ones to judge, as they know first hand how hard it is to learn an instrument

>>69930254
Classical musicians will teach you to mimic your ring finger. Something like flamenco will be a totally different story alot more right hand acrobatics. Classical musicians don't use the pinky what so ever, where as flamenco will utilize it in numerous techniques and even use it for leverage with certain techniques.

>Be young guitarist
>Buy/Sell tons of guitar gear on CL and profiting and becoming a tone nazi
>Start buying tons of pedals
>Build pedalboard out of an oldschool suitcase
>Get tired of the pedal meme
>Start buying used rack equipment
>Eventually opt to stop bringing Head & cab to shows.. Instead go DI into a full rack. EQ/Distortion/Delay/Tuner / etc all part of rack inside a road case
>Eventually grow up
>Nothing beats a simple setup with a guitar tube amp.

No reason to hate on people for getting their fill on pedals and effects. It was fun to play with, but at least for me, when your playing shows, simplicity is best. Quick setup, less things to go wrong live. I use two pedals on my live setup... I have my Boss Tuner and Noise Suppressor pedals sitting on my amp head, and then it runs into a wireless. So I basically plug my head into my cab, switch on my wireless, and everything is good to go. The only other pedal I get occasional use out of is a delay pedal. If there's one underused/underrated pedal IMO it's the noise suppressor. Soundguys get a hardon for you everytime. "This kids got a fucking noise suppressor? HELL YEA, and he's using a wireless.. thats some next level shit"

not sure if it was clear how I typed it. But basically I just have Mesa Dual Rectifier Head on 4x12 cab with my NS-2 and Tuner on top. No rack, no mess of pedals and cables all over the place. Easy livin

if your practice amp doesn't have a headphone/record out, think about spending 50 bucks or so on another one. I've got a shitty little line 6 I use for practicing at home. Nobody hears a thing

you'd think so, but I know a top level session musician who says it's the most bitchiest and egotistical field out there

maybe that's just at the very top level though where everyone has to be perfect

Anything to do with art in general always has its pretentious egomaniacs. Telling someone they are good at something is a helluva drug
>>
>>69930417
I think theres a real degree of ego involved in some people that play an instrument for them as opposed to for the music, for the longest time I used to get real petty about guitarist that were better than me (which made no sense because I was a complete beginner at the time, so literally everyone was better than me), after a while and as I got a little better I started playing more and more just to make good sounds, but I guess for some people its not about the art but about showing off how good they are, which is fair enough, but I guess it's missing the point a little
>>
>>69930417
I legitimately learn guitar so I can play songs for myself when i'm bored and lonely kind of like banjo players in the lonesome country
>>
>>69927156

>>
>>69930407
If you're just getting it to fuck around on, it probably doesn't matter.

But if you're trying to build an inexpensive rig and it's a first guitar, I'd get something on the level of a MIM Fender or a VM Squire and a decent modeling amp, even if it's a THR10 for your bedroom.

This was me, kinda. Ive used multi fx and sims in daws, but i couldnt tell you a brand besides boss, or a pedal name. I just started trying some out, and listening the demos online. It started to make sense, for delay i bought a dd6 cause it was a steal and all i needed(dd7 would be nicer because it has external tap tempo). For fuzz i got a big muff, basic but useful. For OD I got a ts9, i hate it, but it came with a guitar for $25 more. For octave i got a pitch fork, does a lot more than octaves though(wish it had independant blend knobs for high and low pitches). I got a bunch of old DOD pedals for $20 each at various pawn shops for things i dont use a lot, like a chorus and a phaser. I kept going, getting deals or getting new ones as i wanted a soind.

Go on youtube, look up "different types of distortion/modulation/delay" and that will explain a bulk of pedals. Things that might not show up are pitch shifters, reverbs, bit crusher, tremolo, compressor, eq, wah, envelope filter, maybe clean boost but its grouped with distortion pedals a lot...i think that covers the common ones. Youll hear representations of each sound, and youll be able to link it to different things youve heard. Find the types you want, and hit up some forums, youll find tons of opinions an reccomendations on specific pedals.

Honestly, im at a point i dont even enjoy playing all that much, ive moved on to cloning and modding pedals. It keeps me playing, testing them out.

It's bound to sound unnatural since most of the time you will be playing outside the original instruments' range. Chords are arranged differently on guitar too.
>>
>>69930735
I didn't start running into problems untill recently when I started trying to do some more complicated stuff. I think I peaked at Avalanche by Leonard choen. When I started learning classical music like pangini it started to become physically impossible and the intonation was frustrating and I thought it was my left hand the entire time. Turns out it was my picking hand, which I never thought had an issue.

>not knowing the mellotron sound
the instrument these pedals are based on was created while technology wasn't where it is now. if you want exact sound replication, dont look at this pedal. this pedal sounds pretty fucking close to the real mellotron though. this is the same shit as people focusing too much on vidya graphics.

In this book(downloaded from the links at the top) the author shows a Ebm7/9 on this page. The diagram says it starts at the 3rd fret making the root note a D? Am I reading this wrong or misunderstanding the theory?

>>
>>69931544
The root note of a chord isn't always the lowest note in pitch. That said, I don't get how It's an Ebm7 anything chord because it has a natural 7th degree (the D note). It would work in melodic or harmonic minor, but I would write the chord name as Ebminmaj7add9 or something instead of Ebm7/9.

Not too concise, but I think it's more descriptive. When I see Ebm7, I'm thinking it's going to have a Db in it rather than a D natural.

>Feels kinda bad that he basically called my current improv style shit
nah he's just saying that it's sort of outdated (and it is). jazz is hard as fuck. modern jazz is just super complex with tons of subs and altered scales, it really takes a thorough knowledge of jazz history to understand fully.
>>
>>69929963
Have you ever played a truly shitty guitar? Like with high as fuck action, shitty plywood tier body that breaks, shitty tuners, and all around shit?
It's a nightmare. Switching from that to a decent enough, slightly more spend guitar was like a dream.
