What's the way to go when you want to start transcribing and jamming to stuff like funk, soul and RnB? Do you just find the chord tones of each chord change, figure out if they're major or minor and add jazz embellishments where it fits or is there a more theoretical approach to take?

That's an issue in any genre. You should be wearing plugs if you dont want tinnitus. I have tinnitus and it fucking sucks so much. If you don't want to be driven nuts by the thought of silence, protect your ears with plugs or keep the volume down.

People will bitch about specifics but any guitar is a good starter guitar. Anything to get you playing. I would suggest something in the middle of "cheap" and "feels good." Go to a store and try some out. You can always lower the action if you're worried about that. There's not 1 best starter guitar. People can be pretentious all they want but for the most part guitars all do the same thing.

Hey guys so I have a MiM strat that whenever I go play high notes for leads or whatever it sounds for lack of a better term, whiny and flat. I've tried it with both my line 6 and peavy vyrpyr and it happens on both, putting on distortion helps but there's songs I wanna play clean also and the sound just isn't where I want it. Is this just a strat thing? Also mine has a humbucker for the bridge pickup but still whiny even on the bridge one.

Got a blank body/neck for a bass guitar yesterday. Where can I find a pickguard that fits this? The body looks similar to a P-Bass but in all the pictures of P-Basses I can find they either only have bridge pickups or they have humbuckers at the neck, whereas on this one I guess the humbucker is supposed to go at the bridge.

Also looking for good color scheme suggestions, only two ideas I had were forest green + white pickguard or just staining the wood darker
>>
>>69908583
neon green gloss on the bottom half of the body, matte pink on the top
>>
>>69908189

i know this sound retarded as fuck but could i reflow the solder on my jack with a hot paperclip? i dont have a heatgun or iron so i need to do it somehow. i lost the washer and nut on my sg that keeps the jack in place while inserting and removing the cable. eventually the joint wore loose from repeated use and i saw that one side of the jack snapped from the solder pad. please give me any other options for a fix, even if temporary.
>>
How can i establish a practice schedule?

I have about 3 hs a day and i'm using steve vai's workout as a reference. The only difference is that i add another block for repertoire.

I've tried dividing the 3 hours into 9 20 minutes blocks, however, i feel like 20 mins is not enough for me to practice the stuff i learn.

And the problem with having 30 minutes block is that i'll have to leave out many skills that i consider important and i won't have as much consistency.

So, how should i do it? How do you practice anons?

> tl;dr
I want to make my own practice schedule and i have as much as 3 hours a day available.
>>
>>69908734
it takes 21 days to establish a habit, practice 3 hours a day for 3 weeks. make an effort to do it for at least those 21 days
>>
>>69908583
Go with no pickguard. Also looks like some damage around the bridge area, hopefully you got a good price for that.
>>
>>69908734
guitar isnt worth it when you play as a chore, just play like you want when you want. you will come to know what you need to learn. priorities and structure come with playing until you find a goal to strive towards. just play, its literally that simple.
>>
>>69908818
This. Having a set schedule and routine sounds really tedious. Just play when you feel like playing. There's no magic schedule/number of minutes to play that will make you good. Just play.
>>
>>69908777
Yeah i suppose i'll try that out, the problem is how to structure my practice time.

>>69908818
No i don't mean to play guitar as a chore, but i want to improve and i feel like i don't manage my practice time quite right.
>>
>>69908644
You can buy a soldering iron for less than $10 from walmart.
>>
>>69908919
What do you want to improve on? Practice that. Good good at that. Move on to the next thing you want to improve on. If you're not getting something right away, practice something else or take a break and go back to it.
>>
>>69908919
improvement will only come when you know what your own playing style is which just comes from playing around. id rather be unique than technically proficient and robotic. just learn scales, which isnt a chore if you have a use for it. learn what you know you will use.
>>
>>69908734
I usually start alternate picking up and down the neck, mess around with some slow sweep picking then play something similar to what I've been listening to or try and learn something new
>>
>>69908734

>>
>>69907319
EW use the Boss FZ-2 like the other guy said, but I would definitely look up demos before you commit because it is a very polarizing sound when not in a mix (and probably wouldn't be the best for bass). They also aren't produced anymore and aren't attainable for 100 dollars, but check out the Demon Lung for a great replica if you want to save a bit. If you just want a good stoner/doom pedal look into Big Muffs and clones of the muff.
>>
>>69909507
You need to know your major scale, from that shape all modes are created.
If you are a guitar player learn the 5 pent scales and then add the major notes to them to complete the scale shapes.
>>
>>69909263

>>
>>69906619

Raise action on that string. You probably have a low spot on the third fret or a high spot in the 4th/5th-ish region. Raising the action should be sufficient.

Flatwound strings and a pickup in either the neck or middle position. A Fender Jazz will get you closer than the P-bass.

Also a compressor pedal. And pluck the strings (fingerstyle) near the neck for that sound in the vid. The bass also has a little bit of something added in post, touch of reverb or chorus or delay I dunno. It's slight but there's something more than dry bass signal going on there.
>>
>>69910522
Kinda. It has if you plug it in to your computer and use Boss Tone Studio. That way you can edit effects etc.
>>
>>69910592
*only the first track has that bit of extra effect on it.

So, are jazz basses less bass-y than their precision counterparts? I used to use a p bass in my band, but it was stolen. So now, I'm thinking about getting a jazz bass, but people say that they lack some of the bottom end that the p bass naturally had. Opinions?
>>
>>69910676
Plug one in at music store and see. Jazz basses have plenty of low end, just different, softer, kinda thing. It's subtle. Try and see.
>>
>>69910592

>>
>>69910676

Precision and Jazz Basses are really different beasts, you should try out one given the chance. J basses don't pack as much of a punch as Ps do, but they can do some real nice well-rounded tones that you can't get with a P.
>>
>>69910745
Okay. Just a heads up on flats, string tension will be higher than you're used to with rounds. You may want to use a lighter gauge than your usual. Or not if you don't care about the tension difference.

Drop D to trick everyone into thinking I'm going to play some metal or some shit and then hit them with some Francisco Tarrega. Then after Capricho Arabe I tune it back up to be courteous to the guitar's owner and play Romance de Amor by whoever the fuck composed that, which flows seamlessly back into Tarrega (Etude in Em).

What a good electric guitar and amp combo for low tone distortion and general beginners use?

For guitar that's a really broad topic. The type of guitars the bands you enjoy tend to play is a good start (get the cheaper version). Amps, you'd probably like something in the category of Fender, Vox. By 'low tone distortion' you mean like just a little bit of distortion and not heavy distortion like metal bands use, right?

>>
>>69911376
What? I think you have a fatal misunderstanding of how the amp works.

It has a 3 or 4 inbuilt effects, ie. reverb, delay, fuzz.

You can switch those effects to effects that you'd rather have, like switching reverb for a metalzone, or switching delay for a comp.

Have any of you checked a guitar case on a bus? I'm looking into a bus ticket and the way the size is limited for checked items is by adding the length, width, and height. My guitar case is 70 inches and the limit is 62; will they let me on anyway? If they do, should I be worried about my guitar being stolen?
>>
>>69911820

Okay, yes then Fender and Vox amps are a good place to start.

Any guitar pedal will work with any guitar/amp combo. Don't buy any pedals until you know what your amp sounds like. Amps often have a distortion channel so if you like how that sounds there's no need to buy a pedal to do the same job.

>>
>>69914217
1 3 5 = major triad
1 b3 5 = minor triad

1 3 5 7 = major 7th
1 b3 5 b7 = minor 7th
1 3 5 b7 = (dominant) 7th

in the major scale, the V (aka the dominant) is the only scale degree on which you can build a dominant 7th chord. For several reasons, this chord is (traditionally considered to be) very tense and resolves strongly to the I (e.g. in the key of C which is CDEFGABC, C is I and G is V, so a G7 builds tension that is resolved when you return to the C major chord)

Other anon is right

Just for reference

Major 7 is 1st, major 3rd, 5th, major 7th
Minor 7 is 1st, minor 3rd, 5th, minor 7th
Dom 7 is 1st, major 3rd, 5th, minor 7th

If youre playing in a major key, the 5th tone's chord will be dominant(so E if youre playing in A). The 5th degree is the Mixolydian mode, which is identical to the major scale but has a minor 7th instead of a major. Playing a major 7th chord there would be out of key. Thats not to say it wouldnt sound good, of course.

Thats the same reason a power chord "doesnt work" for the 7th tone of the major scale, that mode doesnt have a perfect 5th. It does have a flat/diminished 5th, which is why youre told to play a diminished chord there. I personally think a minor 6th chord sounds better, although it is cliche.

Basically, if you know what a major and minor is you've already learned two modes - ionian and aeolian. You may have learned the major scale as

W W H W W W H

and the minor as

W H W W H W W

well, if you look at those patterns, the minor one is actually just the major one but starting at the 6th degree. The rest of the modes are just applying that concept to every other scale degree.

Id say learn a proper daw like protools reaper cubase or something and download some vst plugins like amplitube or bias fx or ezmix and you will have unlimited tones (including the plini tone) at your disposal once you learn to configure them properly.

look up videos of people demoing those plugins to see what I mean.

Don't memorize scales as a series of half and whole steps. Think of them as a set of scale degrees, and identify which of those degrees have a half step between them

e.g. a major scale is just
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8(1)
3/4 and 7/8 are separated by half steps, the rest by whole steps

This is probably why I've always felt like j songs were more interesting musically than western songs. The chord progressions are more complex and kind of wander a bit before resolving. Western chord progressions seem a little simple in comparison which is why in my opinon western pop is very basic and pedestrian sounding. It doesn't challenge your ear or attention span because the changes are pretty predictable.

The Pillows (the guys who did the FLCL soundtrack) had great jazzy songs in their early days especially their album Living Field.

it literally doesn't matter what you make an electric guitar out of lol, also they have great sounding metal and composite acoustics already so it's not the fault of materials

I agree it does seem a little more out there and I think thats probably a point of the video

if you think of iii as the 3,5,7 of I with no bass, vi a classic sub of I, V going to I, IV descending to iii, iii is the V of vi, vi is the V of ii switched to relative minor, and then ending on that iv for some tension

its not too random, no jazz tritone subs and a lot of descending fifths

but also i dont know shit about fuck and im not even sure these are the correct chords he's playing through but like that other anon said a lot of jap music was based on american jazz
>>
What do I buy this week
Ibanez RG, Fender Strat or both?

Katana sounds good for an amp?

I haven't listened to them much after their FLCL stuff but you can't tell me Last Dinosaur isn't still amazing.

I won't lie I'm just angry cause I thought all their music was gonna be good like the songs they used in FLCL, but they really pilfered their catalogue to make that soundtrack huh. I'm loathe to them using pillows music again for the sequel now that I'm not in middle school any more...

also yes, the kevin michael sounds better than that Martin while being 1/3rd the price, lighter, smaller, more comfortable, easier to play, and more resistant to climate

agreed, it doesn't have that sweet jazz harmony that only fits if you listen through a couple chords, not just one chord to the next.

Putting 10s helped the thinner strings for me when I was fucking about with all that. Check your nut too it might be to worn down or the slots to wide making the string move around to much.

I had bad tinging sitar like sounds. I put some slight pressure with my finger on the string above the nut when played open.

just recently switched from the roundwound strings i had to flatwounds, ecg25; 12-52. Playing a epi les paul

bit different, higher tension which isn't a problem cause my action was terrible so I'm used to using extra strength when fretting. I like the sound I'm getting out of it but overall it seems either more quiet or I'm just not used to not hearing the "bite" that roundwounds usually give.

What strings do you use, have you experimented with custom gauges from different packs?

sounds awesome

damn i think you just saved my fretboard.
the frets are pretty low.
sort of like 6130 in pic.

do i need to crown the frets after i file em down or can i just take a bit off the top of the ones that are causing trouble?
>>
So, got an Orange Dark Terror, looking to get some pedals to complement it. Kind of torn between getting a decent overdrive pedal, or a fuzz one. Love Boris kind of tones. Would the Proco Rat be a good start?
>>
>>69918338
like ernie heavies?
>>
>>69918764

No. Takeshi only uses a modified Rat on his bass afaik.

If you want the Wata tone you need a Big Muff. I'd get a wah too.
>>
>>69918759
if they're low wide frets(which is what 6130s are) and it's a newish guitar from the past few years, you can file and crown your frets.

if they have pretty heavy wear you might not want to try it, and you might want a luthier or a tech who knows what they're doing to look at them. if you only have certain frets causing trouble you might have a leveling problem which I definitely wouldn't mess around with if you don't have gauge(s).

filing down a bit off the top would leave the fret flat, which can give intonation problems because the strings won't hit the fret evenly

Just regular 10s. I took them off though and went back to 9s. The only problem I have now is the G string with the slight sitar/pinging noise when open but it's not a big deal.

Double check your nut and action again too. If your strings are too high above the 12th fret you made need to adjust the truss rod some more and raise the action to compensate. It was a bitch to deal with but it got better. Hopefully looking around online and youtube change help you. Best of luck.

>>
>>69918780

Ah fair enough, part of what put me towards the Rat was the fact that it's so integral for Sunn O))), but I'm not sure I'd ever really be playing their kind of droney stuff much.

Any recommendations on the wah? I've heard great things about the Dimebag one.

>>
>>69918866

A stock Crybaby is what she uses, the new small one is pretty useful.

If you're the adveturous type a RMC-3 wah would work best imo.
>>
>>69918869
yeah i don't think he's the end all for shredding or close to it but being one of the first does give him some sort of nostalgia, imo
>>
>>69918836
yeah its fairly new, about 3 years i think and not so much fret wear.

the problem is uneven frets but i was under the impression that you could file em down a bit and then file the sides so it creates this sort of round angle again, making the frets even(er)

i may have misunderstood though.
>>
>>69918858
when you say regular 10s are you referring to just standard gauge? im not used to the terminology. also i checked my nut it doesn't seem too worn out. they don't wiggle too much there. i really wouldn't want to move the saddles since that'd be a painful process. i had the steps written down when an old guy told me but it involved bending the string down a few frets from 12 to get it to sound 12 by adjusting the saddles.
>>
>>69918913
do you have a fret rocker, or sanding beam, or anything like that?

if you have low frets to begin with, naturally it leaves you with less material BUT it sounds like your guitar would be fine to adjust. what tools for this do you actually have?
>>
>>69918989
I have a couple of different metal files and sand paper.
>>
>>69918989
>>69919015

I'm watching demos, and I have no idea how a wah would come into the play when you're playing something as fuzzy as Boris or other similar rock/metal. I know they definitely use it, but watching demos hasn't got me convinced that the wah would be too useful.

>>69918987

Regular 10s are what you'd typically use on E standard tuning on a 24.75" scale guitar (Les Paul). The high string measures 0.010 I believe, different from a 25.5" scale guitar (Strat) which would typically use 9s. Of course you can use any strings on any guitar, that's just what's typical.
>>
>>69918987
Adjusting the saddle it literally the easiest to adjust. I was afraid to mess with anything with the guitar but it's so easy to do. Just need a .05 allen key if you have a Strat or Tele.

For intonation you just need a screw driver.

I'd go with the RG, because they are more versatile out of the box and the necks are wonderful. Overall just a lot more potential in my opinion. I have a RG1820X. I'd also consider a model without a tremolo or at least a vintage one, because locking tremolo is a pain in the ass in my experience. Pic related would be my choise.

Seeing you have plenty of money to put into the guitar, I've no idea why you even ask about the Katana but something like an Engl Ironball, Koch Studiotone or Marshall 2525 would be a more suitable pair for the guitar.
