happy holidays, everyone! what records do you hope Santa brings you?

The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

Love Sondre

Another first listen review:
>Polysemy - Ambedo
Polysemy claims in the description of his album that he intended on making a "chillwave-house-bossanova fusion". To an extent, I can hear the bossanova sounds that he is trying to garner influence from, but this sounds more like a blend of chillwave, ambient, Animal Collective, and "slacker rock", like that of Mac DeMarco, especially in that of the guitar tones. This is not to deter Polysemy, mind you. I found it to be a good album that blends well and cohesively. If you like the music that influences Polysemy, I think you'll like this album. Lush and colorful. (6-7/10)

>>69854871
I said 3/10 because while it was boring, it wasn't so bad that I was looking at my phone impatiently, waiting for the thing to be over. It just slowly faded into the background like wallpaper almost.

A good portion of my music library is bandcamp stuff, but not all of it. Sometimes I try to go to through a random chart or two to pass the time. Like for example, I'm trying to go through the chart pictured, as well as various ambient and folktronica releases from Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada, Bibio, Tycho (because I thought why not), couple folk musicians, and random bandcamp artists.

Also, if someone could find me the Vera Lynn and the Verlaines albums, that'd be great. Those are the last albums I need to find, couldn't find them on the archives or rutracker.

I've heard Heaven or Las Vegas three years ago, and I really enjoyed it. Was a very good into dream pop, shoegaze. Really it's me finishing the rest of the chart. The ones that stand out so far are Belle And Sebastian, Francoise Hardy, Jim O Rourke, Pram, XTC, and Cocteau Twins. I enjoy a majority of these albums, but the ones stated are the ones I keep coming back to.

>Various - Ultra-Lounge: Christmas Cocktails

Good stuff. Even the instrumental tracks are pretty good here, though the main attraction is obviously the vocal tracks. If I had to be stuck in a cheesy Christmas lounge, this would be what I want to be playing. It's a bit too long but it's otherwise pretty good!

>Various - How the Grinch Stole Christmas

It's the Grinch. The music from the animated short everyone knows, to be more specific - and it's just as fun to listen now as it was when I was a kid. If you lack nostalgia, however, I doubt you will like this. And the spoken word segments don't feel right without some visuals to accompany them.

Now we're getting to the good stuff! I hope.

>Mathias Delplanque - Cronicast 083, Radio Station
A commissioned piece by an independent French radio station, Mathias Delplanque creates a sound collage, musique concrete piece using field recordings of the radio station's offices. The little hums of feedback, clicks, whispers, piano samples, printer machines, and ambient loops are pleasant. I found the more quiet parts of the work to be more significant than the random blasts of music that were coming from certain rooms of the radio station. Reminded me of Matmos' Ultimate Care II (which I had the pleasure of seeing live), but not as abraisive. Not heads over heels, but it is very welcoming. (6-7/10)

>Lethargic in the Park - INTO PARADISE
Floaty, spacey ambient, with swirly, 80s sounding, new age synths. Has some of that bedroom producer cheesiness to it, like he's using the simpler presets of his keyboard or computer program. It's harmless though. Something to calmly stare into space, or the sky. (5-6/10)

NxWorries - Yes Lawd! (2016)
>neo-soul

Tries too hard to be a collection of little vignettes with a cohesive theme, a la Madvillainy or Donuts, but it ends up lousy with filler, barring some really killer tracks. I love .Paak, Malibu is one of my favorite albums of the year, and he's definitely on point here vocally, at least on the longer songs. His scratchy voice is intrinsically cool, but the lyrics are /terrible/. Malibu has a really heavy theme of sexuality, but this takes it to another level, it's just kinda gross and uncomfortable to listen to. The production is mostly consistently cool. The vignette style of the album itself doesn't work, and a lot of the shorter tracks are just throwaway beats, but Knxwledge blends modern production with chopped samples of old soul songs really well, the latter style blends with .Paak's voice perfectly. It could be so much better than it is, and it's definitely lesser than Malibu, but a fine neo-soul album in it's own right. Could've really benefited from some editing, though.

William Tyler - Modern Country (2016)
>american primitivism

Probably the closest primitivism I've heard to Bad Timing, in sound and in style. It takes a lot more influence from country and americana than blues and classical music, while still adding large amounts of chamber folk influence. It's really pretty, especially on the opener and the closer, but it lacks the raw technicality and power of most primitivism, and as such it sometimes falls into background music territory. The production gives it this really unappealing, generic sheen, I think that rawer, more immediate production could've done this album wonders. The instrumental additions are mostly nice, especially the drumming of the always great Glenn Kotche (/that's/ why this reminds me of O'Rourke!), but some synthesizer and piano parts are tacky. I'd like this more if it was stripped down and more engaging, but as is it's still a pleasant listen.

I use RYM for keeping record of the films I watch and some music (but RYM has got a not so impressive catalog of bleeps). I don't use my old account because I wanted to start off fresh and not be influenced by what my RYM friends rec'd or liked.

>5 fav movies
Eraserhead, Stalker, Harakiri, Sans Soleil and maybe Mulholland Dr. or Le Trou or My Neighbour Totoro. Pretty standard stuff, as you can tell I've been going through the RYM top films and have been finding a lot more stuff that I like compared to the RYM top music releases.

>5 fav bleepies
This is hard to do because sometimes I get so stuck on a bleep I listen to it non stop and then I kinda wear out my love for it. So here's 5 bleeps I really like

>New York Latvian Concert Choir - Christmas Joy in Latvia

This is really good. The Latvian choir here is gorgeous, and the orchestra playing alongside them is equally talented. Just a solid, joyous album that makes it hard to not smile when listening.

You should check this out Dogwander, even if you're more of a New Years kind of guy. Knowing what's being said might make this even better - Latvian certainly sounds cool.

>Vince Guaraldi - A Charlie Brown Christmas

Peanuts has become a quintessential piece of American culture ever since it began print ages ago, and so you would expect only a top notch composer to be given the responsibility of scoring its animated adaptions. This album definitely earns its spot as being among the best Christmas music has to offer; the movie itself is a Wintertime classic and the music is one of the first things that pops into people's heads when they hear the word Christmas in these parts. While it might not be the greatest or most forward thinking thing jazz has to offer, I doubt there's much else that can make any Winter day as comfortable as this.

Up next: A Christmas album by our very own natkingcole! He's very talented.

mclusky - Mclusky Do Dallas (2002)
>noise rock, post-hardcore

Not a fan of the slower, more "indie" tracks, but the noise rock is so damn energetic and catchy, I love it to death. No other track quite reaches the heights of "Lightsabre Cocksucking Blues", a perfect slice of catchy punky noise rock if I've ever heard one, and some tracks scattered throughout the second half come off as total slogs, at least when compared to the faster-paced songs, but it's through and through an enjoyable, contagiously passionate album.

Cool, I'd be interested to see the new RYM but I won't ask for it as that seems to be the point. You can see the films I watch at letterboxd.com/maybeaspy, although I haven't watched a lot lately, I'm going to try and start this holiday again. Watched Autumn Sonata tonight which was great and may eventually beat Scenes of a Marriage to be my favourite Bergman.

I'll listen to the bleeps in a bit, look good :)

DJ Sound - Volume 10: Hatred (1995)
>memphis rap, gangsta rap

DJ Sound is the primary producer on Crime Rate Sky-High, so the production here is obviously pretty insane. "Intro", my favorite track from Crime Rate, makes an appearance here as "Watch Out For da Click", and naturally, it's the best track here. That isn't to say that the rest of the album isn't up to snuff with Sound's other production works, the beats are all great (save for a few that seem just like throwaways), and they perfect the evil memphis sound. The rapping, however, definitely isn't all that great. The rapid-fire triplet rapping style so essential in memphis rap is mostly gone, and replaced with some tepid rappers that can't match up to any of the best MCs in memphis. Despite its flaws, still essential listening if you're a memphis rap fan.

Yves Tumor - Serpent Music (2016)
>hypnagogic pop

First couple of tracks are really cool, the hazy atmosphere created with the loops works really well with the breathy, ethereal vocals. Shame the quality can't keep up. After "Role in Creation" or so the album completely loses all sense of direction, turning into a aimless 30 minutes of soundscaping with no end goal in sight and no real purpose. It still retains the cool hazy atmosphere, but it utilizes it in a significantly less interesting manner. I'm keeping my eye out on this guy, because the first four tracks show he's got talent, he just needs to make a much more focused final project.

speaking of quirky, this album is THE S H I T
>Dr Acula - S.L.O.B.
ykno there's albums that sound fun to listen to and ones that sound like they were fun to make, the overlap of that venn diagram = probably all of the best music ever made desu
summed up in one word, it's "loose", starting with the complete disregard for song structure giving it a real sense of spontaneity, between generic breakdowns & blasting or totally wacky, would-be-out-of-place sections that you don't really register as feeling out of place because of the whole atmosphere
imo the best part is the vocals because they either just sound like some random drunk idiots' shitty imitation of death growls, or just straight up, slerd as fuck (there's this beatiful and totally fitting word in german called) lallen (bawling i guess?). the first track is literally called Party and contains "i raise my drink in the air cuz im way too drunk to care", you know what im talking about
the production is totally whimpy, there's 0 low end, i guess that gives it a sense of being non-threatening which adds to the fun, careless factor?
it totally sucks ass though, like if you hated that infamous Waking the Cadaver album or if you generally hate meatheaded deathcore wait til you hear THIS

A Place to Bury Strangers but they play at half tempo and most of the guitars are replaced by synths and they sound more like early The Cure and occasionally Stereolab (or maybe i simply haven't heard enough post-punk to be able to properly contextualize this). > Progressive Rock, Art Punk, Zolo
A complete clusterfuck of different styles and genres, but in a good way. I like the sudden outbursts of manic energy, sometimes done by incorporating short bits of circus music or even marches. This album is the definition of “throw shit at the wall and see what sticks”, but it mostly works (at least for me). The problem is that this makes it kind of exhausting to listen to, I’d prefer a shorter runtime. 7/10

>Rosa Yemen - Rosa Yemen
Late 70s punk/no-wave fronted by a dissonant French female vocalist. Less than 10 minutes long.
Pretty fuckin' rad.

My problem with most no-wave though is the build up of tension with no release, but I guess that's kinda the point.
Though Branca's Acension manages to make it work...

Solid nonetheless.

>Rema-Rema - Wheel in the Roses
Drunk dissonant early 80s post-punk a la Royal Trux, but less absolute terror and hell.

At times impenetrable, wanky, and directionless, this record does have moments of genius and brings the noise, so I haven't quite made my mind up on it yet.

Definitely somewhere between solid and fantastic though.

>I Know Who You Are and You Are Nothing - I Know Who I Am and I Am Everything
I feel like we take for granted that we live in this internet age where it is so easy to just put music out there and have it heard if only by a handful of people.

The DIY electronic music scene is so vast and full of people with their own unique aesthetic, and I just think that's the coolest.

I could go on forever about this, and I'm not even that qualified to. The person who rec'd this, gfr, could probably write a book about what I mean.

Anyway this record is simply super chill midi music that fills me with feelings of nostalgia. It also samples Anthony Fantano and Rugrats so it has a good sense of humor about itself.

>Girl Band - France 96
Hoo boy, this is definitely the best I've heard thus far. It's absolutely explosive and catchy noise rock. I hardly have a complaint about it. I will definitely be listening to this over and over.

Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas to everyone! Thanks to everyone who contributed to this chart so far.

keeping up my christmas tradition of a christmas album then a james ferraro album

John Fahey - The New Possibility: John Fahey's Guitar Soli Christmas Album (1968)
>christmas music, american primitivism

I really can only leave a short blurb about this. It's Fahey doing Christmas music. He's obviously at his best and most extraordinary when he's performing his own composition, and he can't really flex his technical or compositional muscles here, but it's pleasant for the season. A great Christmas album, but a mediocre Fahey album. I really do love the renditions of "Joy to the World" and "Silent Night, Holy Night", though.

2.5+

James Ferraro - Far Side Virtual (2011)
>vaporwave, sequencer & MIDI

Really kinda brilliant, in a stupidly off-kilter way. The pop sound Ferraro utilizes on the album's first couple of tracks is irritating, to put it bluntly. The low-bitrate production makes the synths pierce your very soul, and the vocal samples, while perfect for the album's concept, aren't all that great to listen to. As the album goes on, it adopts a more soundscape-based, ambient sound. I really love this sound. Ferraro's skill has always been with this style (especially when he blends it with some fucking sick tribal trance), and the way he creates these dense soundscapes with samples ranging from the Skype call sound to the Wii menu song is impressive and completely hypnotic. The album is horribly uneven, with some pretty garish tracks, but the great tracks definitely make this worth a listen.

Sterac - Secret Life of Machines (1995)
>techno

If you like techno you'll like this, but there's really nothing to write home about here. I like the organicness of it, and the synths on the closer are pretty exceptional, but most tracks go on for far too long and the album as a whole just drags on. Some awful clipping involved here too, and a lot of the more ambient tracks suffer from some pretty garish production. Solid, but nothing amazing.

ultra rapid fire review

Heatmiser - Mic City Sons (1996)
>indie rock

Some prime Elliott Smith bogged down by some generic '90s alt rock production and songwriting. The tracks with just Smith are great, like the closer "Half Right" and the catchy as sin "Plainclothes Man", but everything else reeks of nondescript '90s buttrock pap. Really glad he ditched the band, honestly.

yeah, probably. making sense of your intuition or being a human lie detector is another thing entirely, probably idk. i read somewhere years ago that the vast majority of your conversation is based on misunderstandings and idk what to make of that, but fsr it re-enters my mind periodically. might be bullshit i never bothered to look up what might be up with that
because, second-guessing yourself is sort of hard i'm noticing that big time every time, and thats one of the things
i feel like it would be very helpful though i might be wrong
>>
>>69899862

>>
>>69900388
well that was aimless

>>
This thread is at bump limit now.
>>
>>69900388
communication, as i see it, IS miscommunication.
it's all just a matter of approximation. there's nothing at all absolute about gestures, facial expressions, words, grammar... what something means in your head won't always match what it means in someone else's, but as long as both of you are decent "guessers" you'll know what the other means. you're always guessing even when you think you're not.
if you can discern emotions in people other than yourself on a good enough level to be able to not totally fuck up most social interactions you're probably good (enough) at reading people.
of course some people don't meet that criterium, and of course others are way better than "good enough", but unless someone's very obviously fucked in the head one can safely assume they can read people well.
