No memes in this thread. Only music. New music. New music daily. That's the point of this thread, is it not? But no one cares. In fact, people care so little that they don't even read the OP. The few links here posted are completely worthless and a waste of space.

It's okay but the child actor is absolute fucking garbage. He's supposed to be like a super disobedient and annoying kid, but it's even more annoying how much his performance detracts from the film as a whole.

I'm rewatching it right now because I'm at my mum's and I can only see stuff that's on Netflix SE. The story is decent and it feels a bit different from most horror films, fairly original. The cinematography is great, lighting is spot on to build atmosphere. But it's really not... scary. So I guess it fails as a horror film. I like that it's not a jumpscarefest.

Does anyone else hate how the term "psychological horror" gets applied to everything that isn't just a straight up jumpscare marathon? Like, as soon as a film has any semblance of greater atmosphere, it's "psychological" horror. Fuck that. A real psychological horror film should really get under your skin and disturb you from inside. Make you fear for your own insecurities and phobias instead of what's shown on the screen.

I hate that horror just sucks in general as a genre.

Also yes psychological horror is a way overused term. Jacob's Ladder and Black Swan are probably the only films, maybe a few others that I can't think of off the top of my head, that would actually fit into that category for me.

Horror is the only genre that's fucking great across the spectrum of quality. "Bad" horror films are great because they're tacky and hilarious. "Good" horror films are great because they often have original ideas and good direction. I feel like horror films, even mainstream ones, can be a bit more daring in their writing and production, because that's sort of expected from the genre.

Novelty Condom: Oscar Peterson - Nigerian Marketplace

Very good live album. Tracks are consistent, players are swingin' and the title track of the album is one helluva good tune. While this album is a solid af release, it unfortunately does not advance cause I thought Rudi's rec was better. Still ace stuff though.

Rudi: Johannes Brahms - Symphonie No. 4 (Kleiber)

Ah, a release with all the classic German Romance traits. Powerful, emotional and well crafted. All of these traits lie in the hands of a composer, an orchestra and a conductor; and they use these traits to their advantage to create some damn fine stuff. Rudi advances.

Richard Abrams - Levels and Degrees of Light (theSound) vs Pere Ubu - Dub Housing (rym robot man)
Richard Abrams' piece is very rich in sound palettes, offers a lot, but I guess I prefer something more shaped and structured. Still enjoyable though.
Was slightly cold towards Pere Ubu's vocals, but the rest is really, really good. That's something else and it probably will grow on me even more.

Nasenbluten - 100% No Soul Guaranteed (chmod177) vs Wipers - Youth Of America (rym robot man)
Not only I didn't like Nasenbluten, bc I don't like speedcore/gabber, whatever this is called, I just genuinely think it's bad. It kinda reminds me of Combichrist (which is p bad), only it's worse.
Wipers are amazing, the most pleasant punk rock guitars I've heard so far.

If psychology is a pseudo-science, why is operant and classical conditioning used to train humans at any given task? Why do we have empirically verified methods of treating mental illness? How did we find out that humans are subject to unconscious urges and desires? How is it possible to treat ANY ailment of mind and emotion?

Why? Because psychology is a real method of learning about the human mind and brain. Is it a soft science? Yes. Is all literature in the field useful and valid? No. Have we found out real facts of our reality and information from the study? Yes.

Psychology is not a pseudo-science, it is a soft science. There is a huge difference.

Anything we learn speculatively, must first enter into the categories of understanding, (implemented by the brain in Kant's system).
Try understanding him before you call others out. Why do you think post-Kantians created phenomenology as a methodology?

Cause there is always the I, mediating experience. If you abstract from this, you may get useful results but it is an abstraction which cannot apply to the world of particulars we exist in.

When a horror movie it is good, it is excellent. When it is not good, it is entertainingly bad. Horror is a genre that needs to be done very well to allow enough suspension of disbelief to engage with; when the suspension fails, the films easily allow themselves for mockery. That's why some of the best ones are cheesy/silly and still capable of great filmwork/scares. Evil Dead will always be my fave horror.

>>69902568
Hard to develop concrete theories on the abstract human mind - a lot of psychology can be seen as subjective in the sense that it isn't universal. It's a framework still and will be because it works on the functioning of the mind, including outside the physiology thereof.

>>69902932
You think your right, and thats fine. The insults are a bit tedious. Just a quick thing to ponder, if you'll indulge me.

Mathematics is a quantitative science. That is it reduces all qualitative phenomenon (the objects of experience) to a number which is devoid of quality. This is an abstraction. You took a concrete individual and turned it in to a universal.

Physics uses math to get general trends of smaller level phenomenon. So

Other humans are part of experience, not an abstraction. Many diseases classifications are abstractions, however the set of phenomenon is part of experience.

it's a pseudoscience because the truth is that psychology only really dares to deal with surface reality, which also happens to be the most effective form of treatment. if you're willing to give up your level of awareness and humanity to become a successful human robot then you're all good, that's the idea.
in terms of dealing with the actual mind it can never deal with it in terms of the current treatment which is very behaviourism centric.

why do you think conditions like schizophrenia are generally incurable?
all forms of insanity are really just an awareness of something that one can't speak of or more likely that they don't even know they can't speak of. talk therapy is the only real cure but that's very highly dependent on the psychologist themselves, it doesn't even need to be a psychologist, anyone who understands the human condition on a deeper level can bring people out of trance-like states which is what really all kinds of insanity are. jung was a good example of such a person. even though his writings should be taken on a fictional level.

Analytic Philosophy is a tool sharpening method, not the application of said tools....

Are ye daft or what? Chemistry validated many ideas in alchemy and proved another section of it false.

Just like neuroscience will do to the fake science for comedians and pseudo-intellectuals that is psychology. Actual hard science is all there is. Anything else is conjecture.

No surprise that "psychology" was used to justify asylums, lobotomies and the current pharmaceutical placebo-based hullabaloo of slow, involuntary chemical suicide. It doesn't have any basis in reality and has proven it by repeatedly mutilating and crippling people in the name of muh real science.
>>

See this is what college education is America gets you! This guy has swallowed the positivist message real hard. You know it's been dying since before Wittgenstein right, lol?

Nice straw man. Physicists created the Nuke. All science is directions solely. It must be checked by ethics.
>>
>>69903388
>Except for the empirical validity of behaviorism and techniques like CBT.
Psychology presents no satisfactory explanations as to the source of its own success. If the best you can say is "But it works!" with no real understanding as to why, then you are a cave man rubbing sticks together to create fire, not a scientist.
>>
>>69903420
>Physicists created the Nuke
Total false equivalency.

The nuclear bomb was invented as a result of scientific discovery. (Real scientific discovery, btw)

Lobotomy was encouraged globally by nearly all of psychological academia not because they discovered the inner machinations of the mind and found a satisfactory way to manipulate it for the best, but because they saw people, shanked them in the brain and said "Hey! Desired result!"

Pseudoscience in a nutshell.

Oh boy I sure wish I had a deep and thorough understanding of a fake school of self-referential ivory tower bollocks!

For real, hundreds of years ago there were people that were *really* experienced at suggesting people consume mercury. Just because your pseudoscience is slightly closer to the truth doesn't mean it is less of a pseudoscience.

What are the physical mechanisms that allow CBT to function as it does?
>>
>>69903665
We didn't have to know why gravity worked to know that it worked and how it manifested to us. You're putting this prerequisite of understanding everything about a science to render it valid, when that's not true of any field.

Your self worth is inflated and so is the extent of your knowledge. Learn when to shut your mouth and when to open it, it will help you a lot in life.
>>
>>69903717
Another false equivalency. Physics is actually interested in actually answering real questions. Psychology is only interested in results, not answers.

AKA pseudoscience.
>>
>>69903765
>Psychology is only interested in results, not answers.

Also false, you are genuinely clueless. So fascinating how adamant ignorant people are about their ignorance. It's so common.
>>
Anyway I'm sure that I could spend all day arguing with 4channers about things that they don't understand, but I'd rather do other things. Maybe make an effort to learn some things and carefully deduce what you know and what you don't.
>>
>>69903794
>Also false
Oh boy I love blind, unsupported conjecture! You really are a psychologist!

Fact: It will not be a psychologist that finally answers the question of "How come behavior?" They're too busy with abstractions and unreality to actually come up with satisfactory answers to real problems.

The United States Of America - The United States Of America (rym robot man) vs Modest Mouse - Sad Sappy Sucker (co)
I liked pretty much everything about The United States Of America album, though for now I'm gonna score it more or less moderately. I am just thrilled with the variety it presents, since I am a sucker for some good variety. It was just generally an extremely enjoyable experience.
Modest Mouse's piece is ok, I suppose. Not really something that could be my favorite though, just moderately fine. I heard their other albums are better, I might be interested in checking them out, the sound is quite comfy.

RIAS-Kammerchor / musikFabrik / Daniel Reuss - Les Noces; Mass; Cantata (rym robot man) vs Rabit - Communion (Jimmy Jazz)
Yeah, I thought Jimmy's piece is not bad at all. Grime was one of the few electronic genres I barely ever listened to and it seems rather interesting. Industrial was appropriate there as well.
The contradictions within Les Noces was something really captivating to me. On one hand, it's fierce, intense, extremely passionate, yet delivered in a very soft, elegant manner. It's very experimental and volatile, yet it seems to be able to stay on one path. It's a magnificent work and it's not as russian as it claims and seems to be.

Bets:
1) jimmy jazz (s, jimmy jazz)
2) Terminus (Terminus)
3) Shamepai (Kanzler)
4) Jangle&Bojangle (Transgod)
5) s (GFR)
6) justok (Woolite)
7) Torts (justok, Torts)
8) tripup (tripup)

Science doesn't mean rigorous. There's a lot of rigorous research in psychology, and most of it is really good. That doesn't mean it's science, because science is a method. It's a serious field, but there are also some serious issues with it that sort of relates to the scientific method - mostly repeatability. Many "classical studies" have never been repeated and verified, but are still accepted as truth.

But yeah, not conforming to the scientific method literally means it's pseudoscience. A lot of it could benefit to a more strict adherence to the scientific method, but because of the subjective nature of many phenomena, it's almost impossible to quantify and study everything in psychology in that way.

Don't take it too hard, I'm a psychology student myself and will defend the field to death against typical STEM-fags who believe it's all feels and no reals.

Behaviourism has a LOT of issues per definition by ignoring any internal processes such as emotions and cognition on the whole.

Actually lobotomy came about after rigorous studies on brain damages, where you saw that damage to certain areas affected a person's behaviour in certain ways. I don't remember the dude's name, but it was basically all one guy. They didn't just shove an icepick into some dude's head and said presto.

That said, it was done horribly because psychology hadn't matured enough (and still hasn't).
>>
>>69903838
Actually, the question of "how come behaviour" is one of the most studied questions in psychology, and psychologists work together with neuroscientists a lot, lot, lot. They complement each other.

This Heat - Made Available: John Peel Sessions (rym robot man) vs Michael Chapman - Rainmaker (EthyBoy)
Maybe it's kind of a low score for This Heat, I'm gonna need relistens later to know for sure. It's pretty great in it's different patterns, when it's punkish and when it's reflective and monotonous, I guess I especially liked this balance on "Rimp Romp Ramp".
Chapman has some really great guitar playing, decent voice too.

Sonic Youth - EVOL (rym robot man) vs Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra / Kirill Kondrashin - Symphony 13: Babi Yar (Shamepai)
I probably liked EVOL more than other stuff by Sonic Youth I heard. And I really liked Kim's voice on this one too.
Babi-Yar is just great. It's represents all that modern classical music should have become. Experimental patterns (for such a symphony), the provocative topic, which turned to be a literal challenge to power, the exemplary text - this piece is admirable at very least. This exact performance managed to deliver the power that was intended in it, both through the orchestra performance and Eisen's vocals.

It's official now: humans are losers. Even if they are going to win every single upcoming duel, there still not going to be enough of them to fill the second round. Therefore, robot man's advance is going to be restricted to only half of the spots in the second round, while the other one will be filled with highest rated humans.

If you're looking for a western-produced mini animated series that's not an anime, Over the Garden Wall fits that description perfectly and is only about 10 episodes. The only mini-animated series CN has ever produced iirc (other than some short Star Wars series which wasn't really that great).

Other than that, if you can stomache anime I'd rec >>69908073 and also Gunbuster if you want something Eva-esque.

Also FLCL is great if you want to not get anything until the third time you watch it and Serial Experiments Lain is great if you never want to get it.

>R.E.M - Chronic Town
I haven't given these guys much of a chance beyond their most popular songs. I know my Mom loves them.

I was pleasantly surprised. Each song is extremely catchy and gets my foot tapping along.

Problem is, they all sound too same-y and formuilaic/structured for my liking.

I can't seem to enjoy this more than any other background music I could put on, but it may grow on me.

>Paula Temple - Colonized
This is relentless industrial techno. It does not let up at any point and keeps on pounding for its entire 30 minute duration.

I just wish that it had a wider array of sounds and textures because it gets a bit tiresome, but I think that's either because it's supposed to be or because at least 3 of the songs are remixes of the title track.

I need a bit more time to see if I can't discern some sort of structure or subtlety in this beast.

>Powell - Club Music
Now this is my jam.

Bumpy, heavy, and full of interesting and abrasive textures and sounds while managing to be energetic and danceable.

Probably my second favorite on this chart so far, but it needs a little more time to sink in.

it's really depressing that the only threads that move at a decent pace are the threads where hampus and some anon have a pissing contest

Magic Sam Blues Band - West Side Soul (1968)
>chicago blues, electric blues

I'm not a fan of electric blues (like, at all), but even I can admit that this is damn good. There's really nothing insanely special about it, it sounds like any other electric blues album and most of the songs are covers that have been done a million times before, but Sam's raw talent as a singer and a guitarist are unparalleled, he makes every single one of these tracks worth listening to. I also don't like typical 12-bar guitar-based blues, and Sam definitely falls firmly into this style, but his licks are tasty and his voice is incredible, he has the best scream of any bluesman I've heard. I'll probably never like electric blues as a genre (maybe that John Lee Hooker album can prove me wrong as well), but I sure do like this a lot.

不失者 (Fushitsusha) - 1st (rym robot man) vs Yo La Tengo - I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One (justok)
Why all the whining, 1st is not THAT long. The songs are lengthy, but they're dynamic, so they go p quick. Seems more shaped than your general japanese noise rock. Vocals are great.
Yo La Tengo is pretty, some songs were especially likeable, I like how the music is very cautiously warm. Male vocals were a little bit of a turnoff for me though.

Wire - Chairs Missing (rym robot man) vs Crescent - Collected Songs (FlyingIceWizard)
I guess I liked this slightly more than punkish Pink Flag, but slightly less than 154. The favorite thing about it is low bland guitar.
Crescent is nice. I really liked the use of piano in this one, other instruments were ok too. Can't say the same about the vocals and lyrics, they left me p much indifferent.

It really confuses me that people don't understand that meme posting is what keeps these threads alive at this point. No one really wants to only discuss music seriously here, that would be super boring, even the most seriousface posters must realise that. This has become a community, and what people want to do is really just chat with each other about pretty much anything - chairs, the latest memes, or maybe some music.

If people really just wanted to discuss music, there's the entire board dedicated to that, no need to stay hidden in these threads with your buddies.
>>
>>69909994
Cautiously warm is a great way to describe that album. I guess we have to accept that robots are taking over the world and not even music recommendations are safe.

>No one really wants to only discuss music seriously here, that would be super boring, even the most seriousface posters must realise that.
Honestly I disagree. I know a bunch of people in real life I can talk music to, but daily is the only place where I can talk or hear about music a certain way, and I value that. Most people on daily are not at all interested in critical opinions on music, but people irl are even less interested. I also find lots of cool music on daily that I never find anywhere else on /mu/ (at least at the same clip), save for maybe sharethreads.

Don't get me wrong, I love the memes and all, but I also genuinely enjoy talking about music.

>If people really just wanted to discuss music, there's the entire board dedicated to that, no need to stay hidden in these threads with your buddies.
Any suggestions that post quality on /mu/ as a whole is constantly comparable ought to be facetious.

Actually I'd say quality in /daily/ is consistently WORSE than /mu/ as a whole. There's a whole heap more non-music funposting here than in most /mu/ threads, which tend to actually stay reasonably on track with the OP. Just because these threads are more
>muh improvisations from le mysterious japanese avant man
and /mu/ is more like
>muh dank hip hopper and indie rock gurl
doesn't really make the quality here any better.

Any semblance of serious music discussion is essentially non-existent in any thread on /mu/, be it a general or otherwise. Hell, even just trying to bring up anything related to philosophy of aesthetics will just result in shitflinging "it's objective" "no it's not" ya uh" "nu uh".

Don't get hung up on the semantics of "quality". I meant quality like qualitative or something. I probably meant enjoyability. And I enjoy dicking around about "muh improvisations from le mysterious japanese avant man" and calling it discussion as much as I do the actual discussion.

All I'm saying is that you'd be wrong to assume no one really want to only discuss music here. You're definitely not wrong that people want a community to just chat with about shit though—that's just human, innit?

>Hell, even just trying to bring up anything related to philosophy of aesthetics will just result in shitflinging "it's objective" "no it's not" ya uh" "nu uh".
No kidding. Nobody here is that invested or learned in anything and dim enough to try and argue endlessly with some rando stranger just taking a piss on the internet

Unless thats how you get your kicks. I don't judge
>>
>>69901409
Fellow patrician.
>>
>>69910866
But you're basically agreeing with my premise here - people come here to dick around and have fun, that's your "quality". If everyone here was just seriousbusiness discuss music types of people, I don't think most of the people who make these threads actually enjoyable would stick around, and the "quality" would drop substantially.
>>
>>69910493
Also, discussion on /mu/ as a whole is a fucking joke in a whole 'nother way. You know better than to compare it to daily.

The accountability of having a trip encourages discussion, which is where daily has a leg up over the average /mu/ thread, and that's just the start of it.

>>69910942
Right, but I think there's serious quality to be derived from the genuine discussion of music between people with comparable taste.

M. Geddes Gengras 'Two Variations' (Umor-Rex, 2016)

Two half-hour modular synth pieces. The first, "03.06.2015", is quite beautiful. Tiny, singular crystalline tones fall and linger in small pools of delay, like droplets of rain on a hot day that disappear moments after they land. Near the start it reminds me of Steve Reich, and towards the end it sounds like mid-'90s Autechre. "04.10.15" continues in a similar manner, yet traverses more varied terrain: sometimes angular and abrasive, other times sludgy and psychedelic. 7/10.
>>
>>69910976
The rest of /mu/ is exactly the same as /daily/ when it comes to discussing music, it's just that here you get a bunch of "psuedo-OPs" everytime someone blurts out their shitty opinion on some shitty music and has one or two people reply, possibly one or two meme replies and then no one else cares. It's literally like making a thread on /mu/ about an album, except you get fewer responses.

I've yet to see any "genuine discussion of music" occurring here. It's either 1) some turd posts a """review""" of an album that no one reads, 2) someone asks for recommendations and gets blasted with the same ten albums people here circlejerk or maybe an outlier or so, 3) someone asks for "recs" for a "tournament" and same scenario as above, 4) someone asks what people thought of some album and gets three responses that are all "it was okay" or similar, and then it dies. Literally no "genuine discussion" at all.
>>
>>69911060
the average /daily/ user gives better recs than the rest of mu and thats all i care about

>Leisure Centre - High Fashion
The first three tracks didn't seem that eventful. The drum timbres were nice, and with the delay, reverb, it reminisces on some basic 80s synthpop, R&B, even dream pop. The instrumentation for those same tracks, whether sampled or produced through synth presets, didn't really stand out. The field recordings of waves and people talking to emulate that mall sound, seemed very synthetic and standout, rather than natural and blending with these tracks. But as the album progressed, my issues with this album surprisingly dissipated, and I felt a sense of reminiscing, thinking back to aimlessly wondering through the malls of Jakarta, Indonesia. The reverb and delay soaked the instrumentation more and soon it felt like a dream like state. The second to last track I think best exemplifies this. Underwhelming beginning, but good progression and finish, a very intoxicating on the latter portion of the album. (7/10)

>Joplin Rice - Low Hum
I was interested in seeing how this album was in comparison to both Spine Adagio II and Hurricane Alaska, the latter which I was hugely a fan of. My natural assumption was that Low Hum would be the transition point between these two albums of Joplin's discography. The album, rather, feels like the acoustic potential that was to lead to HA. The tracks are sobering, minimal, and settling. Joplin ditches the sullen, singer-songwriter tone of his previous albums, replacing it with blunted, forward songwriting. Sure, the lyricism is of the same dreaded, lowly content that Joplin has previously presented, but there's a sense of modesty and optimism that trudges through these tracks, foreshadowing what was to come on HA. Maybe it is in poor taste to compare the two, especially because I listen to Alaska before this, but to me, it really feels like an acoustic blueprint of that album, with garage rock tunes, too. Nothing is sticking out to me at the moment, but hopefully, I'll find myself relistening to this. (6/10)
