There's a severe lack of DAW descriptions in the wiki. If you're good with your tool of choice, consider writing a paragraph about it.
/prod/ IRC is up!

Remember to use clyp.it to post your tracks/WIP: posting a clyp.it is just providing sound for a question, posting a Soundcloud link is making self-advertisement and the thread doesn't need that.
Remember to check other peoples' clyp.it links to keep the thread healthy.

opinions /prod/ ?
trying to go for a unique EDM Banger fused with symphonic elements, only a taster on what the album I'm working on is about. and I know the mix on this is pretty terrible, it's more like, the idea.
got a korg volca keys as my first synth a couple weeks ago but the sound feels somewhat limited
what would be a better investment, an effects pedal and a midi keyboard or a volca beats drum machine?
>>69823584

stylistically it sounds pretty derived and predictable tho. And the sound design is kinda generic too.
I do like the chord progression though and how your leads cut through with a really harmonizing melody.

>>69825451
>this is an interesting idea but it's pretty poorly executed
care to elaborate?
>>69825552
I like the whole idea with the mangled voices and those chords along with the trappy beat, it's actually very nice. however the drums aren't as punchy as I'd want them to be, some of the chords don't seem to flow that well but for the most part it's fine, also it needs more foley, it sounds kinda empty, pretty much nothing going on at the mid-rangey area, drum programming is pretty nice but I'm not too fond of a few of those things going on there like some of the crashes, the verse you have with the voice and those polychords is top notch tho

the drums sound nice
its pretty fucking dope man
>>69826610
This isn't that bad but I'm not really into the melody.
>>69827056
>>69826610
True, read about melody composition. There are way too many jumps, melody should ideally have more smooth stepwise motion than jumps, it should have high points and low points, but composed with care. It has to make sense.
Are there any MIDI creators with an interface similar to Synthesia's screen? Like, with a keyboard and a table of notes which you can increase the length of, and the notes fall towards the keyboard while the MIDI is being played? Alternatively, does Synthesia allow you to make MIDI files itself and is it an easy process with Synthesia?
Production is exhausting. It fucks up with my compositional creativity when I have to think about all the sound design and effects and constantly try to not sound like shit. Just give me a simple classical instrument and I'm happy.
Anybody else feels like this too?

>>69827532
Because it sounds pretty good. I have been at it for 2 years and I don't think I can come even close. How much do you /prod/ on a daily basis, do you have a background in music? That's pretty surprising if you have been doing this for only a year.
>>69827600
I try to open my DAW every day, honestly I haven't been going out this past year at all or doing anything else during my free time than make music. when I'm not making music I try to listen to music or generate melodies and I always write notes down or record ideas.
and yeah, before getting into electronic stuff and production I used to listen to tons of classical/orchestral music and I worked on Sibelius with scores.

>tfw I can never hear a difference when I compress something
I want to commit a haiku.
>>69828183
I used to have that too. you need to keep in mind that compression is mostly a utility effect, made to keep your volume levels in check. you're not supposed to hear it (not that much), it's mostly meant to work.
How should I go about transition from one sound to another?
Such as the change in sound around 1:00
https://clyp.it/4mrw4wf0
Anyone knows about a good free disto VST?
>>69828290
Is that so really? I'm kinda like >>69828183
But I think there's still a big difference sometimes no? Like, drums in general in modern music sound heavily compressed
>>69827785
No lols, I actually like it.
>>69828686
What genre is this tho? If you're trying to make something out of the mainstream you may as well just experiment for this and go with whatever feels good to your ears. If you want to surprise the listener do an abrupt transition, if you want to get him into an hypnotic kind of mood be more subtle about the transitions, etc
>>69829908

Memes aside I like it.
I haven't ever been on this board, let alone /prod/ general. I just want to know if I'm biting more than I can chew. I don't know any of the basics yet I'm kinda attempting music that needs the fundamentals understood in order to sound good. I'm just doing everything by ear for now.
https://clyp.it/31pt5wan
Any suggestions on what to practice more? I know everything is a bit off-beat, I'll try to finalize the song soon.
Witch is generally better for live playing, Bitwig or Ableton?
>>69831100
Thanks! I hoping its closer to banger than ambient though ;)
Throw a kick on your mix to get some lower frequencies in. There's tons of different patterns and styles you could try to give your mix some more life and movement. Plus if you sidechain to that, you could have an entirely different feel to the song. Overall, it honestly sounds like chill song from runescape, which is kinda dope.
>7/10 would sell flax to for 5k in cammy
>>69825443
A used one. An lxr drum machine is similar, suspiciously so as if they tried to copy it, but it's a kit you need to make yourself. Other than that Arturia's new drum machine is interesting though it's not as complex with the sequencing.
I'm a beginner having trouble making compositions. I can do short riffs and things, but I can't expand them into anything bigger. Hoping to overcome this soon. Also wanting to bump the thread.

I'm about to fall asleep, but I'm trying to record audio from my Volca bass in Ableton. I'm running MIDI from Ableton through my Focusrite Scarlett, and signal out from my Volca to audio input 3 on my interface. All audio inputs are activated in Ableton, and I'm receiving a signal but audio only plays through my synth rather than the computer. I have no problem recording audio from my MS20 though. It seems like with the volcas you need one of pic related which I just ordered, that might be my problem? I can't think of anything else I'm doing wrong. >>69823584
Yeah m8 the chord progression in the drop doesn't even resolve, cunts fucked. People want a release in tension in the drop.
You seem to have quite decent production skills but it's pretty generic structure wise. Nothing really stands out
I can barely hear the sub from 1:32 to 3:00. Try EQing the other frequenies so the sub has dominance over 30hz-250hz.
The best part of the song in my opinion is the intro and outro because you can actually hear the sub lmao.
>>69823349
You need to add an extra element halfway between 0:34 and 1:30. Gets boring pretty quickly. Also, when the 808 comes in, you need to make sure the sample ends when you play it again, like when you do drum rolls etc. Melody is understandably boring and there is zero mastering but you seem to have a good starting knowledge of structure, which is great. The drums punch through but the song could be WAY louder, learn about compression and distortion.
>>69827785
eq the main synth so it doesn't cut into you lows, maybe a little more distortion would be better. Personally I didn't like the melodies but that's my opinion. Good job.
>>69830784
yeah decent
>>69831100
Does not sound depressed at all, no percussion. alright I guess but the melodies are a bit cheesy
>>69835089
Idk if you were going for this or not, but the vocals are too quiet, pop them up by 2db or so. I think the snare sample should be changed for something a little more punchy, and I didn't like the synth in the second half. Very good overall though.
dd some d
why is there no mention of the volca range on the wiki? there some of the best value pieces out there and great for people starting out
should I get a zoom 505 multi effects pedal or dedicated behringer ones, i'm on a budget and haven't decided on a particular sound so i'm leaning to the multi
but is there a significant quality difference between them?
>>69837067
>significant quality difference
I doubt that, actually. Going modular with cheep Behringer/Nady/Danelectro/Rogue pedals is a lot more fun than having one multi FX unit. But it's also more of a hassle (all those power supplies/batteries, patch cables, etc). It's really gonna be up to you in the end, but the digital Zoom pedal is probably the best option imho.
•Most Effective Option On A Budget: Multi FX
•Most Fun Option On A Budget-Plus: A litter of cheep pedals

This is the 2nd song of yours I've heard on these threads and I think you're one of the better producers here. >>69839197
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V5abOBDrEQQ&t=348s
Basically; distortion is needed for 1. 808's lack upper harmonics, and thus don't have a lot of punch, distortion helps generate that punch 2.Distortion allows for listeners that have audio systems that can't produce sound below 200 Hz to hear the bass. 3. Adds more authenticity and feel to the mix.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IVlTyztagJs
Compression is a lot more complicated but it's essential to producing a competitive track.

>>69846839
>https://clyp.it/5tpcs25f
too much happening on your sides, its overpowering your middile.
I'd imagine it's happening from reverb and delays, can you reduces those?
made this new track today, any advice?
https://soundcloud.com/papi-mandarin/papavelli
>>69846926
I removed everything from drums except a kick and a snare, also removed some reverbs. Trying to figure out the main problem.
https://clyp.it/apubt5g5
>>69847027
I actually thought some reverbs/delays could help the mix, there was just too much of them.
How are you doing your reverbs/delays? just adding them directly to your tracks or via send/return?
>>69827451
i usually start with a basic piano sound and worry about sound design and arrangement once i have a few parts hashed out.
>>69847114
Yeah, I usually added them directly like a retard. But actually, there were not many of them in this track. I never understand is it because of the shitty sounds I always choose, bad arrangement or a horrible mix.
>>69847131
Same for me too, but shit like this happens where I fuck up everything and go to the next project before everything collapses and kills me.
Sort of new to using midi, having a problem I can't seem to figure out on my own:
I am triggering a Prophet 08 via an Elektron Machinedrum using the midi machines. That seems to work okay, the only problem is whenever I hit a drum trigger on the MD, it triggers a note on the P08 (as if the drum trigger buttons were a second keyboard for the P08). Anybody have any knowledge of these two instruments/general midi knowledge that might help me?
>>69841318
would rather buy a few stand alone Pocket Operators and an MS20 mini for that price.
Ooh, and I have one more, also got lost in the mix and stopped working on it (buildup lacks content, though):

>>69846588
>>69846605
Thanks. I'm not really keen on sampling. I think one of the problems is that the bossa nova chords in the piano are sort built for acoustic guitar and would rely on snap musicianship with articulation on any other instrument. I tried using some organ sounds but it just fell into the mud pit with everything else.
As a curiosity, here's the original when I was trying to mix bossa with shoegaze

tone down those mids a little or use reverb to soften some of the high and mid frequency sounds. otherwise i liked the beat (i do house aswell).
>>69847161
trust me i have like 5 songs i am proud to share with my friends but i have like 30 or so projects i set on the back burner.
do you have any synth plugins that you use a lot?
>>69847191
I don't know that gear, but i do know midi.
Does the Machinedrum have the ability to assign what midi channels are remote vs local vs both?
Assuming the machinedrum can sequence across multiple midi channels, you'll want to dedicate channels specifically to the P08 so those channels don't play on the machinedrum and visa versa.
>>69847191
run the pro08 and elektron on different midi channels

https://www.gearslutz.com/board/electronic-music-instruments-electronic-music-production/649778-elektron-machinedrum-sequencer.html
seems like when you use a midi machine on a track to send to the P08, you can't use the machinedrums audio on that track.
>>69847322
Thank you.
Nothing specific really, currently I'm using a bit more Serum and trying to figure it out, but I should probably focus on one thing. My other options are Sylenth1 (because it's pretty easy) and Harmor.
>>69847594
Serum is dope.
Along side that im liking the Tone 2 Gladiator a lot and the LuSH101.
how do I make sick drum beats?
I have a drum machine but I sorta just fuck around until I get something that sounds okay, as opposed to keyboard where I actually know what I'm doing

can anyone recommend a good pair of headphones for under 100$. i already have monitor speakers but i want something for when i am on the road and as a second reference.

i have ath m40x they are just at $100 though
working on extending and polishing this tune i made a few months ago, its pretty much tech-house:
https://clyp.it/xp3ah1ln
>>69848217
typically a simple beat with the right amount of syncopation does the trick.
Have the main kick, main snare/clap, and a single hihat act as the simple beat... anything else you add should be used in order to throw the simple beat off rhythm.
>>69848785
How can I make the drums sound NICE? Should I practice that just by copying from various songs and achieving a good taste?
Here's some ambient jam thingy I made
https://clyp.it/zu1qsckx
and some other thing
https://clyp.it/soakv0sn
>>69848695
I was expecting the kick in the later part (where the 4/4 kick comes in) to be steadily at the same level as the one in the intro, instead later on there seems to be two kick sounds - one softer sound that keeps the 4/4 going and a louder one that just sounds at the start of each measure.
Think of what a DJ would have to do to with EQ on their mixer to get that softer sound to come through at a decent level, and imagine then what the louder kick sound would sound like - if the club uses a limiter on its sound system that louder sound (with the exaggerated EQ the DJ has added) the limiter will briefly pull the level of the whole track down. With no limiter in place there will be clipping instead when that kick hits.
Especially with tech-house you need to have a good even kick sound, so put some time into that.
>>69849068
Yeah you can do that, but you should really learn more about syncopation if you dont know how to implement that already.
tuning each drum to the scale of the song helps too
>>69849274
Sure, but if my sounds are shitty the end result will suck, right? I'm interested in getting a sound design, effects and a mix right.
>>69849315

what drum machine do you have?

>>69849404
well those should give you good sound. Maybe you just need to learn how to apply compression to drums?
>>69849477
I guess so. I have been trying, but I don't hear almost any difference at all (and I'm pretty sure I understand how it works). That and somehow developing a better ear for mixing, because I often fail at that too.

couple quick question from someone just starting out
got an analog synth and a couple pedals
>if i get an audio interface for my laptop can i use a digital eq instead of getting an eq pedal?
>most audio interfaces' inputs are for mics, how would i connect a quarter inch to it?
>if i'm editing the sound on the laptop and adding some samples would that finished sound come out of the interface or the laptop?

>>69854643
>if i get an audio interface for my laptop can i use a digital eq instead of getting an eq pedal?
don't use guitar EQs with a synth, that's retarded
>most audio interfaces' inputs are for mics, how would i connect a quarter inch to it?
they use connectors that accept both xlr and 1/4" plugs
>if i'm editing the sound on the laptop and adding some samples would that finished sound come out of the interface or the laptop?
yes. there are no dumb questions, yet somehow you managed to make one
>is there a video synth program that can take audio input?
not sure about programs
there's companies who make devices that do that
>>69855104
what's wrong with guitar eqs on a synth?
don't they still perform the same function?
>yes. there are no dumb questions, yet somehow you managed to make one
i mean there's a headphone jack on the interface, if i plugged headphones into that would i be listening to preprocessed or postprocessed sound?
>>69855233
there's usually something on the interface to control whether you're hearing the direct input or the processed sound
>>69853037
start with a powered case, an oscillator module and LFO module. You should be able to figure out the rest as you go.
worst thing you can do it buy a bunch of modules that seem good to you as a newb.

>>69857472
You sir found the cheat code to music
>>69857806
Yes, I'd say it's the least confusing way to get started with music theory and production, but after a while it could become a bit boring and dull, to avoid it add some chord mixture and extensions once you've mastered what I previously mentioned.
Can someone explain to me the process of mastering?
Like you've recorded your music, you've mixed it and now you need to master it. What does this involve?
Why can't I make a decent drum loop?
Can anybody help me? this sounds like shit and I don't know how to make killer drums that I can listen too without it sounding shit after 1 loop.

>>69858817
Why the fuck are you using three kicks and two snares?
>>69858911
I dunno I heared that "layering" your drums makes sounds more interesting
>>69858942
That means you should put one in top of the other, not playing with them indepently.
>>69859009
im pretty much doing this with exception of the kick
>>69858817
Listen to some music with drums that you like and try to imagine how you would program that type of drum beat. Part of the problem with drums is that they're not the focus of the song so most of us don't pay that much attention to them, so it's hard to make them ourselves. Most extreme solution would be to actually become a drummer IRL, but you could also just try to learn to think like a drummer.
>>69859164
just to clarify im not trying to justify what I did I know it sounds shit see >>69858830
but I want to improve. I love good drums and sounds like BoC does but can not emulate a good beat at all
>>69859297
thanks man I will
>>69858394
Trying not to downplay the role of mastering here, but it's just the process of preparing your music for delivery.
There are two main components to it - the first is optimising your music so that it sounds the best it can on your chosen media platform, and the second comes more into play when taking an album's worth of material into consideration and it involves compiling all of the material into a coherent whole item, so track order is finalised, any transitions between tracks are created (even the amount of silence between tracks is looked at during this phase) and relative levels and tone balance is worked on.
Is FL studio really a meme? Should I stick with it or get something else? I'm down to learn something more complicated.
>>69859960
Is it a meme? Yes. But it's still a very good DAW and you can definitely make great stuff with it.
I used it for a really long time and only switched to Ableton recently because it's workflow suits me better

Total noob to production here.
I'm looking for an audio interface (USB) to record my guitar. I spotted two relatively cheap interfaces in my local shop, Behringer U-Phoria U2 and UMC-22 ($30-40).
From the reviews they look good enough, so are they really or should I definitely avoid the cheap ones and get a more expensive one?
>>69862090
2i2
>>69856881
really fucking good
I wish I could make stuff like this ;-;
>>69859960
it's just FL encourages blind production, just throwing together things with no concept of how each individual thing functions. It's a lot easier to produce in FL than any other DAW because of this
>>69862111
So the Behringer ones are definitely a no-go?
>>69862090
I also recommend the 2i2, that's what I use and it's perfect for beginners and also a solid interface. it'll last you awhile too

so I've got a question. what's the default volume on my audio interface.
>>69863807
what ever your desired listening volume on your system is
if you want to do it right you want a SPL meter, put it on C or unfiltered and slow release and measure 85dB on your listening spot while playing white noise
everything else is guesstimating and personal perference, which is totally fine if you don't run a commercial studio.
>>69863864
thanks for your answer man, just to clarify a little further. I worked on music with a straight to laptop headphone jack so I considered that to be the full volume and when I messed around with shit like limiters I did that with my laptop's max capacity. but now with an interface I can just crank up as much as it goes, what's the equivalent setting to my laptop's built in card that I was used to
>>69863958
I don't think I really understand the question
just turn it up as loud as you want?
there's no absolute levels for your ears, they're not measurement microphones
work with what ever level is comfy
>>69864012
I'm just getting used to the idea of being able to adjust my volume because before there was only one max setting, my laptop's mix when it was at 100 so that was my reference volume.
>>69864048
if you want to be able to come back to that then just A/B it real quick by plugging the headphones back and forth and marking it with a sticker on the interface's knob
that's basically the only way to do it
>>69864080
thanks a ton for your help and your quick reply man, I guess I was just too much a noob and thought that the max level of my pc's soundcard was like the standard max level of everything lmao and when
https://clyp.it/iaidv1on
>>69864188
nah, there's ton of different headphone amps out there (both your laptop and your interface have one), different sensitivities on the headphones' side, and the same thing of course goes for speakers as well, sensitive ones play louder with less voltage coming in, and so on
if things match up at 100% output it's a total coincidence
