The Decalogues are great and will run you 10 hours easy but I would suggest def not to bindge watch them all at the same time, otherwise go for Fanny and Alexander or Andrei Rublev all depending on how long the flight is. Just pretty meh picks as far as my objective onions are concerned. For example I found AMSP to be horribly mediocre, toothless and unrewarding in all listens past the first one. Lots of questionable choices that I don't think would be me specific too like that Bon Iver album being so high that as far as I see is also a cool first impressions but rather awful if you stick around with it kind of deal plus stuff like that Last Shadow Puppets album that is so covered head to toes in horrible orchestrations and forgettable songwriting it's a chore to get through half of it and is a formula that has been done so often before better.

Could nitpick a lot on the other choices too but going away from purely subjective opinions and talking more generally could do with more text explaining your picks and there def seems to be folk heavy bias in the higher spots, variety is nice though although at least SOME jazz would be nice since there's been some good jazz albums this year ;^)

probably one of the coolest album openers ever
how the rhythm guitar keeps strumming a dominant chord for one and a half minutes, while the rest of the band comes at you, before dropping to the tonic is almost like
>dat tony conrad feel
in a way
the second guitar adds some flair to make the intro more engaging which is nice
it shows they know how to make the most out of simple ideas, or some phrase along those lines, ykno?
this gon' be great

Nicolas Jaar - Sirens (2016)
>ambient pop, art pop

Occupies a very awkward halfway point between etheral ambient and artsy, politically charged pop, including elements from both but taking out characteristics that make both of these styles great. There's not much I can say about this other than it bored me, as lazy as a criticism as that is. Jaar does straight pop without any real finesse, he plays it too straight but never really grabs your attention with any great melodies or instrumental choices. He does ambient better, but the ambient tracks really only serve as background music, they're nice and all but they don't stand out in any way. "Three Sides of Nazareth" is a really big standout, however. It's urgent and really interesting to listen to with how it slowly changes over time without ever losing its banging backbeat. It's a great track on an otherwise unremarkable album.

Racionais MC's - Sobrevivendo no inferno (1997)
>hardcore hip hop, conscious hip hop, boom bap

Sure, some of hip hop's impact is lost when there's a language barrier, and maybe the MC's aren't the best flow-wise, but the beats are great and there's a lot of passion behind the rapping. The album starts and end with a sample straight from Portishead's "Glory Box", and from then the production shifts from hard-hitting boom bap to straight-up g-funk, never skipping a beat. The longer songs are the best tracks, it takes a lot of skill to make an 11-minute hip hop track, and these guys do it with finesse. Hurt by the flows, and the fact that I don't understand Portugese (which is all on me), but otherwise a very fine, albeit slightly dated, a hip hop album.

3.0-

The Revolutionary Army of the Infant Jesus - The Gift of Tears (1987)
>psychedelic folk, neofolk

Nearly interminable. Its more delicate moments are nice, the subdued guitar playing contrasts well with the theatrical vocals. It's neofolk moments, where they bring in a lot of tribal/pagan/medieval influence, are overbearingly cheesy, and overlong to boot. ROME or Current 93 or any other big neofolk act do everything these guys do better, but if you're a neofolk completionist give this a listen.

Daily Dead inspiration for you.

In 1972 the Grateful Dead's jamming style owed more to Miles Davis than anyone else living or dead, and that was never more apparent than on jam vehicle, Playin' in the Band. This version from 11/18/72 in Houston, TX is about as frantic of playing as the Dead get. Nearly a half hour of tightly wound break beats. Almost too intense to listen to at times.

Broccoli is a great song. The rest can eat it tho. Black Beatles is only good for the 30 second clip anyone puts in the mannequin challenge, but listening to the entire song is such a chore. Closer is just such basic trash I can't even fathom why you like it. Starboy, I do not get the love for. It sounds like The Weeknd and Daft Punk both threw their most half-assed material together in about an hour and called it a day. I probably have something to say about Maroon 5 too.

And every other pop song is just the same old miller-light-house beat with a chorus of what basically amounts to chopped and screwed moaning. (See: I Took a Pill in Ibiza, et al.)

Granted, mainstream music in general is getting more experimental as the established pop acts all get bored, and attempt to up their quirk for their fans. Also, the pace of change for pop music is picking up, so I reckon pop musicians are a bit more willing to experiment to stay ahead of the trends.

However, pop still just blows, as mostly everyone in the industry is just willing to suck off the latest trend for a quick buck or a two-week-charting single and a few collective hours of Clear Channel broadcasting.

Listened to both the new Grouper and the new NIN release.

Liz kept going with this minimal Ruins vibe but this time with a guitar. As effective as it is, I think the piano worked a bit better with this style. Still, awesome.

The NIN EP is sort of like a With Teeth and Hesitation Marks clash. The most pleasant thing about it is Trent's vocal delivery has some fucking variety. Finally. More keen on the closing 3 tracks than on the opening 2. Good.

No no NO these track ratings are all bumpkiss.

"Singing Swords" is by far the worst track on the album and "Virginia Reel Around the Fountain" is clearly one of the best. "I Would Hurt a Fly" is fine, but is far from the best on the album.

One of the best live albums out there if you haven't heard it yet and enjoy power-poppy indie rock to any capacity.

Anyone else with a RYM subscription see any track ratings that are all flipped up?

>I swear I've listened to it like 3 times but I don't remember a single second of it
Idk why but this is exactly me. It just passed right over my head. I remember "Something I Learned Today", "Pink Turns to Blue", "Turn On the News", and "Reoccurring Dreams" but that's it. I think Double Nickels benefits much more from its length (and, in general, has many more stand out/memorable moments) than Zen Arcade.

Double Nickels borrows heavily from Dub, Art Rock, and Funk. It's certainly the furthest from the New-Wave-y side of post-punk (which is a very, very vague genre imo as someone who loves the genre usually) but it's still so imo.

>>69825498
Would recommend.
>>
>>69826029
is the similar releases feature with premium worthwhile?
>>
>>69826102
I don't find myself using it too much, and in fact I forget about it a lot. I rationalized my subscription with the fact that I probably have spent at least an hour a day on the site every day for the past two years for completely free, and since I had extra cash I decided "why not?". It's a cool thing to have if $15/year is nothing to you.
>>
>>69826029
Yep, literally 3x, but it's been 16 months so i guess I can see why.
I'll give it a listen in the next couple days, maybe even tonight.

>>69826029
>Double Nickels borrows heavily from Dub, Art Rock, and Funk.
Which is why it's misclassified as post-punk, but they're as far from the post-punk scene as Meat Puppets or Violent Femmes.
It's just 3 dudes jammin punk rock with their own set of influences, not everything after 1979 that isn't straight punk needs to be called post-punk.

I remember seeing a game on /mu/ a while ago that was basically the "Bacon Number" (look it up if you don't know what it is) of artists.

I thought they would be detached from this entirely, but I found a pretty significant connection regarding Fishmans:https://rateyourmusic.com/artist/asa_chang/credits/

Apparently this one guy who did "percussion" on Long Season apparently did "music" (???) on Otomo Yoshihide's "Dreams". This could connect them to Jim O'Rourke, which would in turn give them a very wide selection from western music for other connections such as Sonic Youth, Wilco, and Fahey with a base "Musical Bacon Number" (is there a better name for this) of 4 degrees. It's a lot of steps but still very cool.

>Codeine - Barely Real
I'm such a sucker for this band's simple lyrical and production style. The way the snare drum punches through everything else with it's single hits somehow fits in perfectly well with the slow meandering melodies. This whole thing is pretty one note, but executes what it does have to the fullest potential. The song W is an interesting one because it's just a piano playing without any other instrumentation or singing. It was supposed to be a tribute to Slint, but they canned it and instead changed it into this piano piece. The actual song appeared as "Wird" with the piano part changed to guitar on The White Birch. The final song Promise of Love added back in the noisy guitar parts that were prominent on Frigid Stars and made a great closer track to the EP. Definitely check this out if you like their full length albums.

Basically every song from "Something I Learned Today" to "Beyond the Threshold" is memorable af (and then some), so idk what ya'll are on about. "What's Going On" and "Pink Lips Turn to Blue" are GOAT punk songs, and although everybody on his mother loves "Turn On the News" it's honestly not one of my favorites. And I get that they're noisy songs, so it might be hard to focus on the songwriting or playing, but it's an incredibly rich sound and the songwriting is fantastic

And personally, I'm the opposite: I can't remember a thing from Double Nickels, but I'm a huge fan of Zen Arcade. I've listened to the former a few times and the latter about a dozen so far tho. Don't get me wrong, I love the sound of Double Nickels, but I just don't listen to the songs independently ever. (I've also listened to the bulk of both discographies, and I'd definitely give Husker Du the leg up.)

>>69826386
Yeah Double Nickels is pretty punk. While chronologically and categorically it could be considered post-punk, it certainly exhibits none of post-punk's defining stylistic tropes, however broad

Peter King - Shango (2002)
>afrobeat, jazz-funk

Some really groovy shit. Starts off amazingly, but by the middle it gets a bit too content with being one-note. Ends on a wonderful note, however, with the raw and powerful "Watusi". The album's greatest strength is how raw and immediate it is, you can tell that all these songs were cranked out in one go, which makes the whole album feel really natural. Too one-note, but otherwise wonderful.

3.0+

Holy shit you guys have bad taste. I've been going through some AOTY threads these past couple of weeks. Seriously? Blackstar? Skeleton Tree? A Tribe Called Quest? Are you kidding me? How are you going to act elitist when your taste line up almost perfectly with Metacritic.

I thought you guys were supposed to be these hipster douchebags who listen to obscure avant garde music. I know people who claim they're afraid to post here because you listen to weird shit and lord over other people with it. But, no, you just listen to the same weak, milky, watered down pop that everyone else does. How do you guys even use terms like "normie" unironically?

Oh, and don't claim that I'm making a generalisation and that mu isn't one person. Fuck you. There wasn't a single AOTY list I saw this week that wasn't totally obvious.

Wrong wrong wrong
They're totally US-school post punk like devo, pere ubu, mission of Burma, pylon, etc.
More focused on the angular, herky jerky riffs and borrowing a lot more from new wave and the art rock side of things.
They def got some straight rock numbers on that album, but I wouldn't call it a punk album. Doesn't exude that punk simplicity.

They were signed to SST records, which for a bit there was home to hardcore punk (Black Flag, Husker Du, Saccharine Trust). If anything, they're hardcore, but I feel like we're splitting hairs here.

>Daniel Bachman - s/t

Loved this release, it actually managed to crack into my top 25 for the year. There’s obviously a huge Fahey influence on here, with one guitar just chugging along for extended periods. There’s plenty of classical, country and folk influences on this record that he mixes in all throughout. So it doesn’t get too stale despite being pretty simple instrumentally. And the guitar work is all incredible (imo). I wasn’t too huge on the more drone-heavy songs (not usually my thing) but in some ways, I liked that he threw in something different. American Primitivism is an incredibly unique/entertaining genre and I’ve yet to stumble upon something I don’t like.

8/10

>Unwound - Leaves Turn Inside You

Ooooooh boy. I’ve been exploring Unwound’s catalog and even with all the hype, this was much better than expected. Despite being pretty indifferent about post-hardcore, I’ve enjoyed all of the releases I’ve heard so far. But this blows the others out of the water. This is a real changeup from “Repetition” (the most recent album I’d heard of theirs), with a much mellower, brooding Slint-like instrumental style. They dive into some heavier stuff along the way but for the most part, it has a gloomy, crushing atmosphere. The singer has changed his approach, opting to move away from the angsty yelling into a softer, darker tone. All of these elements mesh fantastically, especially in the longer tracks (“Terminus” in particular, fuck).

I’m doing a terrible job explaining it but this album was incredible. The second half just left me emotionally drained. And honestly, it’s been a really long time since an album has impacted me this way.

9.5… though I can see it becoming a 10.

They were actually the 2nd album (Paranoid Time) ever released on SST (after Nervous Breakdown, Black Flag's Greg Ginn created SST). That ep was punk as fuck and I doubt anyone considered it post-punk at the time.
"Punks hated Minutemen" is an overstatement, but they would often play blues and acoustic sets in punk shows so they got spit on and screamed at a lot. Their contemporaries were mostly hardcore punk artists, with their closest being Black Flag.

I'd accept Punk, Punk Rock, Art Punk, Art Rock, Hardcore Punk but NOT post-punk.

Found this band yesterday, cool mix of post-punk and hardcore, a bit like minutemen funnily enough.

>>69834066
What's your aversion to calling minutemen post-punk? How do you define post-punk?

Minutemen don't fall easily under any of these tags or align with any other bands but do they not have more in common with someone like Gang of Four than Black Flag?

Kinda silly arguing about genre definitions especially with such a weird band like Minutemen but hey ho

Hey /daily/!
Here's some little mini reviews based off first-listen experiences. Will definitely relisten to all at some point, but would like to express first thoughts. If you have any interjections or opinions about these pieces, I'd love to hear them.

>Kahondo Style - Green Tea & Crocodiles
Okay/Good. Nice melodic instrumentation from this jazzy art pop record, did not find the transitions between the melodic parts and the soloing to be very good. Some of the soloing felt a little long-winded, poorly constructed. It didn't feel cohesive in that aspect, and a good amount of the vocals were overdramatic, and not in a good theatrical sense. The track Survival stood out to me very well. (5-6/10)
>Grace Rogers - The Tears, My Dear
Boring. Was recommended by Joplin Rice, who I loved, but I can't see myself looking back on this much. Some of the guitar work is alright, vocal work can be good, but not much. Seems like she's forcing her vocals, and the poor recording quality (which I think is from her laptop mic) does not help her songwriting on the track. Only track I kinda liked was the Bob Dylan cover, but that wasn't by much. (3-5/10)
>Baker Act - Tiny Friends
Quaint. Nice little single, not extremely innovative, but it's nice and easy breezy, and the songwriting is nice. (5-7/10)
>The Baddest Beams - "I Just Wasn't Made For These..."
Boring. Basically, a pitch shifted loop of a Beach Boys song that goes on for twelve minutes. I'm one to enjoy vaporwave and plunderphonics, but this wasn't significant to me. Catchy for like the first four minutes at max, before you wish something new would happen. (3-4/10)
>Sleigher - Angular Death
Good. Reminds me of the art rock of Television, Ought, Cloud Becomes Your Hand, maybe even Omni. Colorful. See a sort of potential to it. (6-7/10)
>>
>>69838718

Jk, welcome. Nice taste, seems like you dig some acoustic stuff? If haven't already, check out some Roy Harper or Michael Chapman or Mike Cooper (bill Fay?). These are my memes these days

In terms of taste, I'd say most of my music tastes are leaning to folk, ambient, lo-fi stuff, but I'm very much open to everything. This is just what I'm listening to right now.

Also side note: I discovered a few months ago that the songs Driftin' and I Had a Talk With My Woman are the SAME EXACT RECORDING on Live at the Troubadour as on Lorca.
The Lorca recordings sound muddier so probably it was edited to remove audience noise; I always wondered why those songs sounded shittier than the rest of the studio recordings.
Also it makes me dislike Lorca a little more, as the B-side has absolutely no merit over his live stuff now.

More first listen reviews:

>Sean Holly - His entire discography (two EPs and a single)
Solid. While nothing had stood out, it was a solid mix of acoustic songs, ambient pieces, and trip-hop material. Easy breezy and nice for the background. Good work from the Bandcamp threads. Has relistening potential. (5-6/10)
>Practice Records - The Best Of The Modern Folk Music Of America
Solid compilation of indie folk tunes. Loved the lucies, Joplin Rice, and Wayfaring Stranger. The buck gooter and pulco tracks seemed messy and overly-distorted in juxtaposition with rest of the compilation. Not horrible, but just inconsistent. The instrumentals, some even experimenting with ambient, punk, and post-rock sensibilities stood out to me more than the vocal tracks, but I liked them nonetheless. Overall, pretty good. (6-7/10)

Disagreed. Everyone's old as fuck and Doug's voice is shittier, but instrumentally they kicked a lot of ass. Only a few of their songs weren't from their There's Nothing Wrong With Love/Perfect From Now On/Keep It Like a Secret trio. Would rec seeing them live actually.

So common consensus is that this dude is just straight-up lying about what other music he has, right?

If not, I'm 99% sure he just legally obtained a copy of songs that have already been available as bootlegs for a while. At least, I'm that sure for Elliott Smith and The Beatles, not really sure about any of the others he claims to have.

>>69843439
When I went to see them, Doug was definitely the least into it of anyone there, but it still kicked ass.

Honestly, if you ignored his voice (which was pretty shot for most of the show) and his mopey face, it was instrumentally just as good as a 90s B2S performance would've been.

>Sufjan Stevens - Five hours of Christmas

The first comp was pretty weak overall, each volume had one or two great songs but the rest kind of fell behind. Peace, however, kicked ass all the way through. It's kind of unfair how good that EP was in comparison

Silver & Gold's first two volumes are very hit or miss (with special note the second one, which is a huge mess of ideas of varying quality). The third one was very good however, followed by a slightly lackluster volume. Then there's Christmas Unicorn, which is probably the best of them all.

Generally, I liked the chamber pop styled songs the most.

Read the book, ya dinguses. It's really good. Just takes a bit to get into his writing style, but it really ends up being the most rewarding part of the whole experience. I got such a kick out of the way he described things. And don't be deterred by the two to three orgy chapters.
>>69845521
It's more biographical than the book is certainly, but that's relative, and neither is particularly so

Haven't seen the film, but I'm usually not one for body horror. It is based on the book, and directed by Cronenberg, so I'll just assume it's got the body horror goods.
>>
>>69850864
Cronenberg does way more than just body horror.
It's certainly got some body horror effects sprinkled in but I wouldn't put it under the label.
Watch crash as well, that's a good example of his range.

Shirley Collins - Lodestar (2016)
>english folk music

In a year of major comebacks, '50s/'60s english folk revivalist Shirley Collins comes out with one of the best. She doesn't really modernize her sound at all, but it doesn't sound dated at all, it's totally timeless music. The guitar playing is astounding, taking many cues from primitivism and the technical blues guitar of Collins' late collaborator Davy Graham, and Collins' voice sounds perfectly old and weathered, it fits the music and the songs perfectly. The production is my biggest complain, it's too overdone (the bluesy guitars are especially garish) and Collins' vocals are often pushed to the back despite being the most defining characteristic of the album. That being said, some production recalls can't take away from the fact that this is a damn fine album.

Negative Approach - Negative Approach (1982)
>hardcore punk

Great little slice of hardcore. Brief, ultimately forgettable, and a bit meatheaded, but a completely, utterly exhilirating 10 minutes. The guitars are down and dirty, the vocals are screeching and passionate, the drumming is schizoid, it's everything you could ever want in hardcore. Not something that has a lot of staying power, but a fun, awesome listen nonetheless.

This was nice. Nowhere near as engaging as Bee Thousand, or even Alien Lanes, but still had a few great tracks.

And it's even more scattershot than usual, stylistically. Some grunge, folk rock, punk rock, and even heavy metal-ish stuff on here—all thoroughly lo-fi ofc. It's not that long an album, so it's probably worth your time if you're the least bit interested.

TecnomaLaser5000: Einsturzende Neubauten - Ende Neu

Actual music? IN MY NEUBAUTEN??? What sacrilege! To exacerbate the situation, at points the music could even entice people into doing something completely unavant-garde like dancing!

In all seriousness though, this is a good release. It's a much more normal album than the other Neubauten release I've listened to, Kollaps, but still manages to keep in those good ol' le experimentale tendencies that leave avant-teens satisfied. Fun album but not as good as Kollaps. 3/5.

Sit Calm - Graphite

Yeah, I don't think I can listen to this. Though I've done it a few times, I really hate dropping albums in tourneys. However, it seems that I've done that right here, right now.

It just doesn't seem like an album I'd enjoy much if I finished it. The vocals get on my nerves and the rest of the band doesn't seem that interesting either. I'm sure if the vocals were different this album would be a bit easier to listen but I'm afraid it's not something I'm willing to spin at all.

>John Fahey - Soli Christmas Album

Despite normally liking Fahey's longer songs, the ten minute song here is one of the worst on the album. Most of this is sort of forgettable, really; the only really good tracks, in my opinion, were Go I Will Send Thee and Silent Night.

(take my opinions with an extra grain of salt though, I am not nearly as invested in Fahey or American Primitivism in general as a good amount of /daily/ is)

>John Zorn - A Dreamer's Christmas

A super Jewish guy making a Christmas album is kinda strange, isn't it? This whole album is strange really, it sounds like an album they would play in a 60s tiki lounge during Christmas season, but speckled in a lot of irony. Most of the tracks are pretty bad; the last one with Mike Patton singing was probably the best.

>Ventures - Christmas Album

Huh, this is better than you would think. No singing, no over-the-top orchestral arrangements, and no gratuitous reindeer noises. Instead, you get just over 25 minutes of 60s surf covers of Christmas songs. Basically what that Zorn album wanted to be.

Bought a vacuum cleaner. Succ on dat.

To keep it music related, listened to the Mikami/Tomokawa collab. Loved Aketagawa/ Ishizuka/Mikami trio as always, wasn't that big of a fan of Tomokawa's singing style. Sax sections were tasty.

In regards to Dolden's Who Has the Biggest Sound?, I would say that the closing Untempered Orchestra sounded more interesting to me personally than the big clash of absolutely everything on the main piece.

Not bad. In terms of mixing, I might say more reverb on the keyboard, lower the crackles a bit.

Happy holidays

Life is pretty good, recording our new album was a lot of fun, it's being mixed at the moment. I mean there's a small local label releasing our next album, so I guess that's kind of a record deal. Also maximumrocknoll asked us to do an interview, so we did, that was pretty fun.

Have I ever mentioned that I fucking hate Little Drummer Boy? Because I do. I have never heard a rendition of that song that has not annoyed me.

>Emmylou Harris - Light of the Stable

Emmylou Harris has a very nice voice, but this sort of glides past your head, only really getting your attention during the awkward moments where the country/Christmas mix fails to work (especially evident during The First Noel and Little Drummer Boy).

Title track is great, though. And the track There's A Light on the expanded edition is wonderful.

>Trans-Siberian Orchestra - Christmas Eve and Other Stories

Want to know what's worse than buttrock? Christmas buttrock. Want to know what's worse than Christmas buttrock? An hour of Christmas buttrock.

The worst is behind me now, r-right?
