The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

Lambchop's FLOTUS was weird. i've only heard two of their records, so I can't really speak on their discography as a whole, but it feels like a huge misstep with the autotuning. I love the vocalist's sound, so i'm unhappy they took that direction. I hope to see less electronic influence in their other albums.

Skepta - Konnichiwa (2016)
>grime, UK hip hop

The production is definitely the weakest link here. Skepta's a great MC, he's got the power and the fast flows I love in grime, and he manages to spit out the cheesiest lyrics with complete conviction, which is something I really admire. The beats are wholly mediocre, and they often adopt a more American trap sound that suits Sketpa poorly. "Ladies Hit Squad", featuring an out-of-place A$AP Nast, and "Numbers", featuring an awful bridge from the usually good Pharrell, are the worst offenders. The normal grime production isn't anything to write home about either. Integrity> by JME (Skepta's brother, featured on the best track off of this album) is a perfect example on how to properly make modern grime beats have a lot of power and energy, two things the beats on this album lack. They're alright, and Skepta's performance is dazzling, but it's a pretty mediocre album.

Tommy Johnson - Complete Recorded Works in Chronological Order (1928-1929) (1994)
>delta blues

The first eight or so tracks are perfect little nuggets of delta blues. Johnson's guitar playing is great in a somewhat idiosyncratic manner, and his fragile falsetto adds a really ominous quality to the music that makes it distinct from a lot of other delta blues. After "Big Fat Mama Blues", the recording quality takes a massive dive. The songs buried underneath the crackles and the heavy, obscene surface noise are obviously great, but they sometimes become unlistenable due to the poor recording quality. A remastered version of this comp with more listenable production would be a classic, as is it's a flawed documentation of a great bluesman.

3.0-

John Zorn - Naked City (1990)
>avant-garde jazz

I think I like heavy, oppressive Zorn (Leng Tch'e, At the Mountains of Madness) more than I like wacky Zorn (this and Torture Garden). I really love the tracks here that switch between lounge or rockabilly and balls to the wall grindcore at the drop of a hat, and the performances are pitch perfect, the always exciting Joey Baron being a big standout. The tracks where they take on and expand upon one specific sound or genre tend to fare a lot worse. The production is really clean and sterile, which makes the jazz tracks seem totally soulless, and the rockabilly is (I'm sure purposefully) cheesy as hell. The genre mixtures they've got going on are perfect, but their longer, more focused tracks tend to lose the energy and spark of madness that make Zorn great.

Ka - Honor Killed the Samurai (2016)
>east coast hip hop

Ka's flow and voice sound like a cross between Madlib and MF DOOM. He's got that gruff east coast sound, monotone and nondescript, but still mostly engaging. The idiosyncratic production, almost completely lacking any percussion whatsoever, allows him to experiment a lot more with his flow, speaking through a lot of tracks rather than rapping them. It's an interesting take on hip hop, but it makes a lot of tracks blend together, and the monotone voice can get a bit old. The spooky, minimalistic production is done well, but the constant repetition of loops makes short tracks seem a lot longer than they actually are, and a few beats seem kinda like teases, like they're just intros to full beats that never materialize. An interesting, fresh take on hip hop, but certainly not without some massive flaws.

Unfortunately, like many blues recordings of the Era, the songs are somewhat lost to time.
Every comp I've heard has these versions of the songs. Some are a bit more cleaned up, or in some cases even worse, but for whatever reason those seem to be the only recordings available to labels wanting to repress.
There is a remastered version of that comp but all the poor quality songs have just been replaced by Ishman Bracey numbers.

Good morning, /daily/

One more album and then I'll show you the next round of tourney results.

For today's Dead listening pleasure, here's 6/22/73's Bird Song. 1973 is referred to by many as The Honey Year and it marked a distinct shift toward the jazziness that would peak next year. No song better encapsulates that shift than Bird Song, and I might even say it encapsulates the Dead's essence better than most of their repertoire, vis-à-vis the transience of their music (maybe beauty itself?). Not to go off the rails with speculation, but it's also quite similar lyrically to Hawthorne's The Artist of the Beautiful.

Give a listen: https://youtu.be/N49dLC-xz-U

Jangle, send me your rec--you moved on.

>Telstar Drugs - s/t
Very amateurish, of course. So much so that it seems like they have no formal concept of tension, and the stop-start stuff is pretty erratic and grating. That being said, they do get some really cool movements and the guitar work is satisfying, just not able to tie them together well at all. 6/10

>Cukor Bila Smert' - Manirna Muzyka
This one will be tough to review, because it's thoroughly outsider. When they get it right it's really cool and the modes add up to something vaguely recognizable (the last few tracks). Unfortunately, a lot of it is pretty indistinguishable and Six Coral Devils Pt. II is just kind of bad and uninteresting, for example. A lot of people are comparing it to Catherine Jauniaux's Fluvial, which is a great album you should hear. That one has quite a bit more progression from track-to-track in my opinion.

Trip up moves on.

>Blu - Her Favorite Colo(u)r
This was mildly interesting for the production. Some old timey Caretaker-style songs arranged to beats. The movie scenes thrown in were way unnecessary, and The Life Aquatic stuff risks devaluing your art, unfortunately IMO. 6/10

>Jefre Cantu-Ledesma - Love Is a Stream
This is good. Fucking poignant at times, man (Wild Moon And Sea). This rym review just says "Grouper meets Yellow Swans," which I can see, and I like both of those. It's quite Ben Frost- or Tim Hecker-esque, whom I might reach for instead though, since I think there's just a little bit more variation in the music. 7.5/10

>V.S.O.P - The Quintet
Yeah, this was good too. I can't imagine there being a better group of players at this time. That being said, it's not terribly adventurous or exciting, and it seems pretty ardently a stance against the fusion trend in jazz at the time. Just fine though. 6.5/10

>Minor Threat - Complete Attitude
I won't be able to do this one justice, unfortunately. I really have to strain my ears for hardcore punk to make sense to me. What I can say is this sounds incredibly raw and passionate to me, and I think that's what sets this apart from the rest. In the same way that The Stooges sound like the platonic ideal of uninhibitedness at their best and the listener experiences it vicariously--I think that's what we appreciate here? I don't know, I want to get it. 7/10

I'M FISH moves on.

>Moonshake - Eva Luna
Boy, how have I missed listening to this one? Super good. I like krautrock, but not big on Stereolab. I think they're just a little bit too pretty/pleasant/inoffensive to be very interesting to me. This is the opposite end of the spectrum, and some of it is pretty damn ugly. Like, to the point where Seen and Not Heard just sounds terrible. Liked the dub elements and stuff too. 7.5/10

>Sunset Rubdown - Dragonslayer
I thought I was going to love this album when I heard Silver Moons. That opener is so great, and there are a few other similarly poignant moments throughout. The rest of it sounds like pretty run-of-the-mill 2000's indie rock--just sort of austere, too unnecessarily cool, and vaguely Interpol-esque. His voice has always irked me a bit. Just wish they showed more sincere emotion like they do on the highlights. 6/10

ImposterTuco moves on.

Some close ones. Send in your recs, folks.

>>69780403
Not really a stance against fusion jazz as everybody in the lineup was playing fusion at the time. It's rather a 'reunion' of Miles' second quintet, with Miles being replaced by Hubbard, and close in style to the pre fusion post bop style that the band had.

I think the fusion movement was especially big during the first half of the 70s and not as much towards the end of the decade. By then it's not as easy to find records similar in style to on the corner or sextant and by the 80s that fusion sound was still in the music but in a more subtle way, as you can hear in ECM records. Nonetheless I think there was still less middle of the road bop, I think in the 70s the styles that got the most attention were fusion which got huge audiences and free jazz which was kind of a counterculture to that.

>women earn .78 cents for every dollar a man earns
Economists disagree. The 78c number does not even take into account the fact that women work less than men on average, which seems like the most basic thing you'd correct for. Also not in Sweden.

>most heads of state are men
Not in Sweden.

>most fortune 500 companies are still ran by men
Which is true, and should be looked at. But that doesn't mean women are always subordinated to men. Women are underrepresented in high status fields, men are overrated in low status fields.

edged for a good hour listening to gensho by boris & merzbow (you have to listen to both parts at the same time otherwise it's dull)
>>
>>69787963
I'm glad you decided to respond to literally only one point, which I even admitted is a problem as well, and present it as if I am strictly against it.

I don't believe the discrepancy in gender in high level positions comes from a structural oppression as much as it does from cultural gender expectations, and these same expectations are exactly what makes men just as overrepresented in low status fields as women are in high status fields. This is not oppression, and certainly not against women. This is a cultural issue that effects both genders in bad ways.

Also this is exactly why I don't want to associate myself with the people who front feminism anymore - you're actively trying to reduce men's issues and say they don't exist or they're actually more damaging to women. You're trying to shut men out from the debate, while still saying they need to support your cause. This is extremely counterproductive.

If you want equality, you must also acknowledge that men suffer from gender related issues ("muh real feminists do acknowledge this!!" yeah, and muh real scotsmen. The ones who are seen the most do not.) and invite them into the gender debate instead of just shutting them down at every turn with "women have it worse".

This is exactly what my personal anecdote that I experienced yesterday is about. I voiced an opinion that didn't even contradict the basic principles of feminism, and still I get attacked and socially excluded because of it. No, fuck that, that is not what I want to be associated with.
>>
>>69788119
I have literally no idea where you came to that conclusion from.
>>
>>69788165
>I just don't want to be alienated from my entire class including people I considered my friends, which is what I'm really fucking terrified is happening now.

This part where you said you're terrified of the consequences
>>
>>69785515
Spiderland is like the only 10/10 what are you on
>>
>>69788188
I am terrified of being excluded from my social circles, because I've lived a large portion of my life as a social outcast that no one likes. I knew there would be an argument and maybe some discussion following a disagreement with the idea that women are always oppressed in every single situation. What I didn't anticipate is that the response would be so violently negative to the point where I am already feeling like I am less welcome to even talk to some people who I'd consider my friends.

That's what I'm afraid of, social recluse. I didn't even argue anything, I just voiced a small opinion when asked about it. And it has such dire consequences that I literally can't sleep because of it.

>>
>>69788337
Yeah, I figured as much or that you were just a troll after playing up the 78c card. Very few actually believe that. Or well, I want to believe that few believe it. Apparently a disproportionate amount of people in my class does, since they go around saying "Well we female work for free the rest of the year" since a while back now.

>>69788340
The meme is real.

>>69788374
I'm sure you can accurately judge me from one or two interactions on an anonymous weblocation about meme culture.

I've had a good run at uni so far, I've made a lot of friends and I've had good times with them. That's why it's so incredibly frightening that they're so quick to take a negative stance towards me from just one single opinion. Especially since I feel like if we actually sat down and had a proper discussion, they would understand that we agree on much more than we disagree.

It also doesn't help that I'm scared that I might spiral into a bout of depression again if I am socially excluded. I can't really see myself living through that again.

I just listened to Godspeed's LYSFLATH for the first time today. I had only heard a small taste of it once, but i wasn't into music like that.

I picked it up for 20€ at my local record store, came home, put it on my turntable and just layed on my bed with my headphones on.

On side B, i fell asleep, and had dreams whilst the music was still playing. And dang it, synesthetic stuff like that really enveloped me, after having some deep, dank sleep i woke up and stayed awake through the rest of the album.

I went in blind, and i liked it. I really liked it. I'm probably gonna listen to it again tomorrow.

>Bölzer - Aura
Wow, I did not expect this to like as much as I did. I'm not really into death/black metal at all.
As soon as I heard the deep, guttural yells from the vocalist on the first track, Coronal Mass Ejaculation (amazing title), I was prepared to hate this record.
The vocals grew on me since there is some variation and they really have emotional weight and sound almost tribal. I want to yell along with them.
Regardless, the band just brings forth so much insane energy that even if the vocals did suck, I wouldn't notice.
The band creates this massive wall of sound with a guitarist and a drummer... two people? What the fuck? How?
The playing, from a technical standpoint, is impressive. Now, I don't claim to be any sort of expert, but I don't think I have to be in order to grasp that the riffage here is complex.
The speed at which the guy plays sounds like two guitars to me, and the drummer is and constantly pounding along to match the speed and progression of the riffs.
It sounds Black Sabbath at some points. I'm not a genre purist, but I'm sure this could be considered sludge or even heavy psych.
I don't really know what terms to use to describe it, so I hope I'm making this sound interesting enough for someone to go and check it out.
Now I know that rym has a hard-on for metal for whatever reason, but I think this being the #2 EP of 2013 was earned.

Hieroglyphic Being & J.I.T.U. Ahn-Sahm-Buhl - We Are Not the First (2015)
>avant-garde jazz

Really cool stuff. I didn't think the mixture of spastic, Sun Ra-esque free jazz and very distinctly internet era outsider house/acid techno would work, but it somehow does, especially on the 19-minute long monolith of a closer. The straight-up techno tracks, while servicable, are generic and non-engaging, straightfoward beat stuff at its most typical. It's when this style is merged with some crazy jazz that the album truly shines, making for something truly unique.

3.0+

DJ Sega - New Jack Philly (2009)
>baltimore club

A massive '90s nostalgia run. I spent about 6 months in the '90s, so I can't really talk about nostalgia, but I love how so many classic video game and TV show themes are seamlessly added into this mix—Bill Nye, Tetris, Power Rangers, Mortal Kombat, they're all here! Wonderful in the beginning and the end when there's a much heavier emphasis on this nostalgia mining (especially when the Mortal Kombat and Bill Nye themes are morphed together to create some really, truly pummeling ghettotech), but there's a large lull in the middle when everything just blends together and the whole mix loses any sort of character. DJ Sega works a lot better with distinct samples, when he goes with more obscure stuff his music loses all character, and most of its interesting characteristics. An interesting mix that balances out the boring with some truly great moments.

Christmas is at a standoff because my mother won't allow my sisters cats in the house and my sister won't come unless she brings her cats.

According to some animal planet show I watched ages ago, spilled antifreeze is a common way to kill off pets and make it look like an accident.

By the way, don't do that. It would make you a bad person.
>>
>>69800199
Yeah meat scraps soaked in antifreeze was my first thought but I don't think it's a foolproof way to kill both cats and still make it look like an accident.

>Hum Dono
Some of the most hypnotic music I've ever heard. Just listen to the shifting rhythm of Stephano's Dance, which is a damn near-masterpiece. A lot of acts were doing the East-meets-West thing at this time, and probably better/more innovative from that specific perspective, but this is just a nice cohesive whole. Some tracks are more interesting than others (NNNT maybe being a weak link, Ballad for Goa is almost there, but still poignant), and none of them are amazing soloists, but it's still just "solid" at its very worst. 7.5+/10

>It Was a Dark and Stormy Night
Tough call, tough call. On one hand, the instrumentals are absolutely gorgeous, no doubt about it. You might have rec'd this because of my love for R Plus Seven. Way spastic, dissonant at times. I don't know how he came up with a lot of these ideas. On the other hand, I can't say the spoken word stuff added to it, may have even detracted. It's a little cheesy here, hard to take seriously, sort of a riff on Calvino's If on a winter's night a traveler. Still quite good, I'll try to get into the title track another time. 7.5/10

Jangle moves on...barely
>>
>Black Album
This was fine. Very amateurish, of course. No one can play very well. I REALLY love the production a lot, sounds awesome in the way that only very aged psych can, like an old 13th Floor Elevators album. Here's the thing: the covers are mostly garbage and you can tell they're not great, but the originals (Turquoise Feline, Feedback, Fire Eyes) are stellar without having to do much. 6/10

>Fly, Fly My Sadness
I couldn't tell you if this is good in terms of Bulgarian folk music, because I don't know anything about it, but still there's no doubt in my mind that this is an artistic achievement. Seriously, I think regardless of your musical background, it's hard to listen to this and not be grabbed by its power. The sonic range is completely utilized (even with 90% voice alone), the studio work is immaculate. I won't meme you all, but this is, like, what it's all about. Well picked. I missed a lot of these /daily/ memes. Easily 8.5/10

Supercluster moves on. Great picks, guys.
