Nine more days until Christmas.

The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

Oh boy, another tourney writeup

>Pop Will Eat Itself - Cure For Sanity

I was expecting a bad album when I saw the “Rap Rock” label on RYM but this ended up being quite interesting. There’s a huge amount of UK dance influence on here, with very Screamadelia-esque production all over this. It’s super upbeat and fun, with a nice cozy atmosphere. The moments where it’s pure instrumentals work quite well. Unfortunately, these guys decided to rap over the beats for a bit - and I don’t really enjoy those parts. They sound a lot like Stereo MCs with this blend and it isn’t a style I’m huge on.

Something about this feels a little off and I’m not sure why I didn’t end up enjoying it. I think it ultimately just ends up feeling scatterbrained. If it’d gone all out dance, I would’ve dug it a lot more. Or the MCs were more consistent in their styles, it would’ve worked. Like, I feel like a weirded out Kool Keith character would’ve been perfect on here. Instead, it hits this awkward middle ground that doesn’t quite work. There were certainly some interesting ideas and great moments on here. The combination of these genres was ambitious - just wasn’t my style.

Dammit forgot my trip

>Reverend Charlie Jackson - God’s Got It

I still know very little about blues/gospel so it was certainly interesting to dive into this style even more. The whole album has this very raw atmosphere, as Jackson sings in a gravelly, unrefined voice. The recordings themselves are pretty lo-fi as well, as they were recorded on some relatively rudimentary equipment in Mississippi churches (at least from the little I’ve read). His guitar playing is classic blues, with catchy, simplistic little riffs on here just adding so much soul to the recording.

There’s a darker tone on here than I was expecting though, I’m not quite sure why. Even more than your usual bluesy material. Maybe it’s because I’m picturing the South in the ‘70s and as a result getting a weird vibe but this seems to have a bit of darkness under the surface. My only knock on it is I’m not super heavy on religious subject matter - but it works quite well in this raw atmosphere.

7/10

Nat moves on.

Chance the Rapper - Coloring Book (2016)
>pop rap, conscious hip hop

Gotta agree with Rod's take on this album, all of the gospel choir additions are completely pointless and phony-sounding. Certainly doesn't help that the album is so horribly mixed that the choirs are either completely drowned out or the absolute focal point of the music. I recognize and appreciate the amount of passion and feeling that went into this tape, but it's so overdramatic and over-the-top, and the endless amounts of layers on every single track is overwhelming, especially since the production and mixing is really terrible. For as much as I don't like the production, I have to give it up for pretty much all of the vocal performances. Chance is incredibly charismatic, and most of the features are great, even Bieber manages to spit out a memorable, catchy hook. Chance has to tone down his ambitiousness, he's got the potential to make something great but this tape is far too over-the-top and frankly cheesy to ever really be enjoyable.

I do agree, the second half of How Great makes me mad, because I love it, but the choir sampled is too quiet and I have to turn it way up every time to enjoy it properly

Ann Peebles - I Can't Stand the Rain (1974)
>southern soul

Not much to say, it's just a really solid soul album. The only track that really takes risks with the arrangements is the title track, making it one of the best damn soul songs ever produced, but Peebles' vocals are consistently great and the instrumentals are always solid, some are just a bit more flaccid than the others. Give it a listen if you're into soul in any way.

Agent Orange is better than I expected them to be

That Aquarium album has a fantastic A side. It's too bad the B side traded impeccable folk ditties to slower, more drawn out, and less effective ballads.

Fela and The Africa 70 - Shakara (1972)
>afrobeat

Solid, tight, funky as hell grooves, so pretty much what you'd epect from prime Fela. Lacks any real standout moments and the Africa 70 is in tighter sync on an album like Expensive Shit, but otherwise it's pretty musically wonderful. Kuti's little electric piano additions to "Lady" are awesome, and Allen's drumming is, as per usual, perfect. Lyrically, it's a major step-down from Kuti's other conscious works, for "Lady" alone, which sends a fairly disgusting message. Still, it's Fela and The Africa 70, so it's a fun, groovy, riproaring 27 minutes.

It's easier to spot bad mixing than good mixing imo

Like, if the sounds are not distinct, if certain sounds are weirdly louder or quieter than they ought to be, if some sounds peak or clip—all what I think of when I think of bad mixing, or engineering, or whatever. Bad production basically. But in rap communities specifically, production more refers to the creation of the beats than the engineering aspect, which is probably why you've been seeing "mixing" used so much to refer to the actual engineering-type production. "Mixing" as a word to describe that side of the production is definitely in demand, and in vogue.

Also iirc I think Antwon Fantwon throws around phrases "strangely low in the mix" a lot, so HHH-type communities will always run with whatever buzzword he's been using.

Kind of rambling here but w/e

Maybe that's why I'm annoyed whenever I hear "bad mixing". I hear it constantly. I've probably heard that complaint about every major hip-hop release outside of Danny Brown and Pete Rock

Whatever, I'm fine with not noticing lol

I think Gemini is miles better than WLFGRL. WLFGRL sounds amateurish in comparison and stylistically it's all over the place.

not much honestly

The Prosecution are a local ska band and i'm prolly gonna see them on the 23rd. pretty good actually, should be a great show
The Sea Nymphs are a Cardiacs side project, more subdued/atmospheric, less memorable, i think this is unreleased stuff from around the time of StG it sure sounds like interludes or breaks from that album that were cut
Friendly Fires apparently have one good track. i kinda hate when they slow down for a chorus
Life is Peachy gave me the idea of making a "feelings of nervousness, inadequacy and disgust in ones room and body" chart, Coin Locker Kid would be on there too
Primitive Weapons are rly cool aggrocore
anything else is nothing new or whatever

Swirlies - They Spent Their Wild Youthful Days in the Glittering World of the Salons (tripup) vs スター階段 (Sta-Kaidan) - 京大西部講堂 1983.9.17 LIVE (rym robot man)
From the beginning Sta-Kaidan didn't seem to me like anything special, more of a regular japanese noise rock, but it gradually was getting better and I probably am going to relisten it a lot. It's groovy, smug, diverse and not getting too distracted in improvisations.
Swirlies there made a compelling case, it was good enough for something that's not quite my thing.

லால்குடி ஜயராம (Lalgudi Jayaraman) & Amjad Ali Khan - South Meets North (I'M FISH) vs Leonard Cohen - Songs Of Leonard Cohen (rym robot man)
It's hard to be wrong with trad for me and although I usually like it more energetic, this one was nice, warm and soothing.
As for Cohen, I expected to be good, but ehh not that good I guess. I really enjoyed it almost immediately, wew.

Looks like humans are still losing, so in case there won't be enough humans to fill the next round (very likely), guess I'd have to just advance best rated humans. So the bets are as they were before the first round:
1) jimmy jazz (jimmy jazz, s)
2) Terminus (Terminus)
3) Shamepai (Kanzler)
4) Jangle&Bojangle (Transgod)
5) s (GFR)
6) justok (Woolite)
7) Torts (justok)
8) tripup (tripup)

Stars of the Lid - Avec Laudenum (1999)
>ambient, drone

Yup, it's Stars of the Lid. Tired Sounds... is an incredible album, and this is pretty much in the same vibe as that minus the field recordings and presented in a more condensed package. Very pretty, dense, ethereal, guitar-based ambient. Suffers from a lack of any real standouts, but it's an incredibly enjoyable 40 minutes to just drift off to.

3.0+

Jozef van Wissem / SQÜRL - Only Lovers Left Alive (2014)
>film score, noise rock

Very obviously a film score. Too often it melts away in the background, lacking any real moments that latch onto the listener, at least outside of the context of the film. SQÜRL's contributions are somewhat flaccid noise rock, groovy and noisy enough (especially on the krautrock-influenced "Please Feel Free to Piss in the Garden") but non-memorable and far too nonintrusive for a genre generally as engaging as noise rock. Wissem's contributions are nice, he adds some well needed variety to the SQÜRL tracks and his solo pieces are enjoyable excursions into dark folk and arabic folk. Pretty good, very nondescript.

Kero Kero Bonito - Bonito Generation (2016)
>electropop

Kinda aggravatingly twee. It's unique how Bonito's topics are completely free from references to love, focusing on more common, mundane topics like school, waking up, and...trampolines. It's refreshing, but it's so damned cloying and insultingly simple and straightforward. Bonito is also a pretty uncharismatic vocalist. The lyrics and their deliveries could benefit a lot from a more energetic vocalist, but Bonito delivers the lines without any conviction, she's far too self aware of the semi-subversiveness of the lines and their simplicity. Beats are pretty solid, pretty typical stuff but they're servicable and catchy. I can't help but admire it, but I can't say I'm a fan at all.

Dumisani Maraire - The African Mbira: Music of the Shona People of Rhodesia (1971)
>shona mbira music

Sparse, vocally driven African music. It completely exudes passion and it's an exceedingly comfy and pleasant listen, but it can get one-note, like it's begging for some more strictly percussive moments to balance out the vocals and the mbira. The mbira is an exceptionally beautiful instrument, but the shaker percussion can get irritating, as it detracts from the beautiful vocals and mbira playing more than anything else. A nice listen overall, I'd like to check out some more recordings in this style.

Lousine Zakarian - Armenian Medieval Spiritual Music (1995)
>hymns, armenian church music

Beautiful, harrowing, ghostly music that shakes you to the very core. Zakarian's operatic voice fits /so/ incredibly with the armenian church tunes, unique in how sparse and simple they are. The first couple tracks or so only feature Zakarian's voice and an organ, playing the most beautiful, simple, concise melodies ever written, complimenting the perfection of Zakarian's voice perfectly. The last couple tracks add some full orchestral backings, and while I prefer the organ pieces, the quality drop is nearly nonexistent, these pieces are just as earth-shatteringly beautiful. All of you, listen to this.

Turns out I had plans this weekend, so I'll get to tourney stuff today.

In the meantime, here are some very good (7.5+) psych folk albums I've dug in the past two weeks:
>Dave Bixby - Ode to Quetzalcoatl
>Michael Chapman - Fully Qualified Survivor
>Mike Cooper - Trout Steel

Nearly finished all the first listens of the chart.
Going to start reviewing with second listens and I think I'm going to do a final 2016 chart at the same time.
Which should I review first? I put scores based purely on the first listen in the top right because I'm interested whether that will change and if, how much it will.

>Floss
It's all bangers. The mix of trap beats, leftfield production (vaguely reminds me of a less miserable, more in-yo-face Atrocity Exhibition at times) and absolutely blistering vocal performances makes for one of the hardest hitting rap records I've heard in a long time.
I kinda missed to more laidback, jazzy vibes of Live From the Dentist Office at first but I ended up really digging it.
Recommended.

>Crippling Lack
More like Crippling Lack of ideas amiright? It's not bad but it really suffers from a) excessive length, b) tacky ass backing instrumentation (synths and electronic drums are consistently godawful) and c) occasionally overbearing vocals.
At the core there are some really good songs here, but with the exception of the final track and that one 15 minute track (2 lazy2google rn) with the sorta gospel-ish(?) backing vocals it failed to really pull me in. Let alone for 90+ minutes.
Disappointing.

Nice, Placebo is actually really really good!
rym is wrong about their earlier studio albums being their best tho.
From what I've heard Loud Like Love is my favourite one.
But rym is right when they say their singles are their best songs. So while it is definitely way too long the A Place for Us to Dream compilation was the best introduction to them I could have found. I love it for that but I only ever relisten to the first half of it. But probably not because it's the better half.

>HLPHS - Several things

The Shoggoth thing wasn't actually Christmas music, it's a parody of A Fiddler on the Roof (which is pretty obvious, in retrospect). I thought it was alright.

The Solstice albums were very fun, they're surprisingly well produced and there's actually a lot of effort put into the tracks beyond the parodied lyrics. I just wish they didn't rush through several songs to make room for as many parodies as possible. It can get kinda annoying at times.

Up next: Carpenters, Sufjan, and Fahey

I'm gonna start dropping heady live versions of Grateful Dead songs on you guys.

1974 was peak Dead jazziness before returning from hiatus with two drummers, so here they are cramming every single tweak and theme they possibly can into an old staple, China Cat Sunflower -> I Know You Rider.

>Autechre - Anti
I think these guys work super well in shorter formats because their full lengths tend to get really exhausting after awhile.
Though to be completely honest, I haven't tried listening to one of their full lengths in probably over than a year now, so I should really give them another chance.
Anyway, this is a very solid record. The first two tracks have that classic cold and mechanical yet melodic mid-90s idm sound.
Each track contains some element cleverly juxtaposed with the beat. In the first track, they use a dreamy female vocal sample.
In the second, high pitched electronic squeals punctuate each beat in an extremely danceable fashion.
Though they aren't super interesting or off the cuff like some ae songs, they are engaging and hypnotic.
The last track, Flutter, known as the "first postmodern protest song", is fantastic.
A bit of context is necessary here. Apparently in the early 90s, Parliament was attempting to attack rave culture in a classic case of the old misunderstanding the youth.
They tried to pass legislation banning repetitive beats, so Autechre responds with Flutter which was "programmed in such a way that no bars contain identical beats and can therefore be played under the proposed new law".
As a result, we get a complete beast of a song spanning 10 minutes that constantly morphs, sounding like proto-breakcore, constantly on the verge of breaking down, yet continually moving forward with increasing momentum until it suddenly fades out.
My main complaint though, is that the sounds are simply a bit flat and lack a cutting edge. I would have preferred if it was more abrasive, but that seemingly wasn't the production style back then.
I think I'm just spoiled by the lush production of this decade's footwork and jungle releases, such as Machine Girl.
Anyway, if you're interested in Aphex Twin, Autechre, or 90s IDM in general, I highly recommend this.

>>69765706

>>
>>69765700
This is it btw. I've said similar stuff in a college classroom. Which is to say, not anything challenging or anti-progressive, and it's met with just as much criticism as if I'd said something actually oppressive
>>
>>69765730
That's true, but I'd argue issues seem to be more polarized than they have been in the past, though definitely not more than they ever have been at some point in history.
>>
>>69765817
Some issues will be more polarized than others in different eras, of course. Gender was not polarized in the 1800s because then it was just commonly accepted that women are not people.
>>
>>69765856
You should say that in class and see what happens lol.
I bet you would trigger a lot of people by bringing up the past.
>>
>>69765882
I think I can say whatever and still trigger a lot of reactions in class, because I study psychology and everyone feels feminist extremists are just a-okay.
>>
>>69765882
Nah, they like being victimized, just like how black people aren't shy to bring up slavery to obtain the oppressed upper hand. It's far more triggering to suggest something like that women that work hard have the same opportunities as men today.
>>
>>69765998
It's even more triggering to suggest that men also experience gender related suffering and deserve to be included in the debate if you want them to also support your cause for women.

... apparently.
>>
>>69765907
Also congrats on trying to keep logic and debate in universities and not succumbing to social pressure, we need a few of you in every classroom.
>>
>>69766033

>turkroach

>>
>>69766063

>>
>>69766097
Hey now, I don't want to be alienated any more from my class than I already am. I sort of wish I'd just settled for "I don't want to call myself a feminist, but due to the fact that my opinions will upset some people I don't want to go deeper into why"
>>
>>69766063
(key word: trying)
I'm surprised nobody backed you up or at least wanted a dialogue about it. Maybe they saw you getting fed to the wolves and wanted no part of it, lol.
>>
>>69766154
Well I mean, what sparked the debate was the teacher asking "who here is a feminist?" and every one but me putting their hands up, and then asking "would anyone here not call themselves a feminist?" after which only I put my hand up. Clearly I had no back up to find in that classroom at all.
>>
>>69766180
Are you worried about never getting laid again?
>>
>>69766205
No, I have a girlfriend who pretty much shares my opinions on gender related issues, except she isn't as interested in it as I am.
>>
>>69766180
What's ironic is that they aren't really the classic definition of feminist, which is equality for both men and women.
>>
>>69766216
Good on you. I've had to bite my tongue on my unacceptably moderate views too often
>>
>>69766236
The teacher literally brought up a definition of feminism after I said I'm not, which said "it requires two components: 1. women are subordinated men and 2. this is a problem that needs to be fixed". She said that most people who don't call themselves feminists will change their view after she shows this definition, and again asked me if I agree with this. I said "No".

>>69766267
Keep in mind that everyone considers themselves moderate - everyone else is just more or less extremist.
>>
>>69766280
Wow, I wouldn't even know how to react to that.
>>
remember music?
me neither
>>
>>69766357
Well it is a sociology class and the current focus is gender, so I didn't really expect anything else.

Full disclosure: I had already decided to leave class early because I had an assignment on Foucault that I needed to finish a few hours laters, but decided to attend the one and only lecture we have on gender because, well, it is important but it also needs to be taught right.
