No thread? Better fix that. It's 14 AM December 2:53 and I've wanted a good ol' canadian burger all day and night. Maybe pizza too.

"The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time." we also like memes and our own egos.

First 2 duels of the first round. Last tourney I tried rating system, which would advance the best scorers instead of vs duels, which seemed fair to me, but since the robot is obviously so much better than anyone else and will probably occupy all the places really soon, I'll go back to vs duels for this tourney.

Blanche Blanche Blanche - Breaking Mirrors (GFR) vs Tom Waits - Rain Dogs (rym robot man)
BBB was a decent listen, I especially liked the sound of guitars. The songs are not always quite structured and I preferred those more consistent like "Crowd Noise" (opposed to "TED Talks", for instance). Vocals leaved the mixed impression, on one hand, not being boring and overused and on another, can't quite say they're anything outstanding.
As for Tom Waits' album, that was a very pleasant surprise, to be honest. An incredible voice accompanied by light~ish music, which might not be as bright in comparison, yet fits quite great.

Orchestre de la Bastille / Myung-whun Chung / Yvonne Loriod / Jeanne Loriod - Turangalîla-Symphonie (Terminus) vs The Pop Group - Y (rym robot man)
The Pop Group album seemed averagely good at first, yet further on it somehow got better and better, I am not sure what was so unique and catchy there for me, yet I am pretty sure I am going to like it even more over time.
This version of Turangalîla-Symphonie really brings out the intensity of the piece, yet the essentiality of this symphony being a "love song" isn't as noticeable.

Bets:
1) jimmy jazz (jimmy jazz)
2) Shamepai (Kanzler)
3) Jangle&Bojangle (Transgod
4) s (GFR)
5) justok (Woolite)
6) Torts (justok)
7) tripup (tripup)

Tim Buckley - Dream Letter: Live in London 1968 (Jangle&Bojangle) vs Glenn Branca - The Ascension (rym robot man)
Great dissonant piece by Glenn Branca, but I might need relistens to appreciate it more.
I don't often like live performances, but this Buckley's live album is very impressive, neatly played, sounds fine af. Jangle is the first and only human so far to advance.

Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra / Antoni Wit / François Weigel / Thomas Bloch - Turangalîla Symphony; L'ascension (Transgod) vs Can - Tago Mago (rym robot man)
I liked this version of the symphony more, for it maintains the balance between the sweetness and intensity better imo.
Tago Mago is amazing, both the kraut parts of it and the long drones.

This thing actually established a really nice atmosphere for itself that started off happy and upbeat and gradually became more chopped up and sinister. I liked how the songs were short and immediately transitioned into each other like you were walking down some seedy alley and just hearing sounds from various sources as you passed. The looping sounds created a hypnotic atmosphere and none of the songs outstayed their welcome. blue triangle/10

>While it was generally thought that Henry Cow took their name from 20th-century American composer Henry Cowell, this has been repeatedly denied by band members. According to Hodgkinson, the name "Henry Cow" was "in the air" in 1968, and it seemed like a good name for the band. It had no connection to anything.

Bad Brains's shortcomings mostly came in ineffective chord changes on alot of their songs.

I really liked both Minor Threat EPs, but I have to give the edge to In My Eyes. That inkling of freedom and versatility that the band implements on that release went a long way.

apparently there's been this trend to bring eclectic influences to genres that are at base rudimentary like punk or metal or whatever and this is a good example of that. in this case it's britpop, apparently that scene was made up of more than 4 bands, who knew. every track could be attributed to a different band pretty much
it's also got more than 1000 ratings on rym and i've not once seen it mentioned on /mu/, that's weird i guess

well i could compile a chart to take a comprehensive sample of one year between 1989 and 2001 for a few days. maybe an earlier one because anything after 66 is a meme. maybe music really only started there how would i know, recording-/ composition dates are just a numbers

Damn, I’ve found some awesome albums thanks to this tourney. Another great matchup this round.

>Various Artists/Analog Africa - African Scream Contest

The full title of this complication pegs this as “Raw & Psychedelic Sounds” and it's a great description. Though I will say, it isn’t so much raw as it is organic. The dudes on here just jam the fuck out, crafting some outstanding funk tracks. There’s not as heavy of a psychedelic influence on here as I was expecting but on longer tracks, there’s some lengthy improv and a lot of ‘60s sounding keyboard (which I fucking love).

Everything on here just epitomizes why I like funk - there’s tight grooves, excellent little guitar licks and dope drumming. Speaking of which, the drumming is super cool on here, with a nice assortment of bongos and hand drums that give it that African flair. I legitimately know nothing about African funk music though - that’s a pretty niche description - but everyone on here is apparently from Benin & Togo, which seems like quite the random location.Shocking to see something so outstanding come out of such a small, arbitrary spot. Guess that just shows you how much musical talent is out there. What I love most about this release though is the guys definitely sound like they’re having fun. Regardless of the track or performer, this just put me in a good mood, which was a huge plus.

>Steve Reid - Nova

God damn, what a listen. I didn’t think there could be anything that topped Fish’s compilation but this shockingly good. Reid blends a really funky style of jazz with free influences and it works better than most jazz I’ve heard before. Not really the biggest fan of freer stuff but for some reason, Reid manages to make it sound incredible. This has an almost spiritual atmosphere the entirety, which I absolutely loved. Nova pounds away at the drums at an alarming rate in the background and the pianist tears it up, providing a really catchy riff on the title track. Both the trumpet and saxophone add a very anxious feel at times bursting into freer passages throughout this. And the bass gives this a definite funk flair at times, while an organ (or maybe synth) just adds to the atmosphere. Basically, everyone is in the zone all throughout the release.

This is one of the few jazz releases I’ve heard that have managed to remain incredibly catchy while also leaning strongly toward the avant-garde- even diving into some free stuff. It’s up there with Unity and it’s also one of the coolest jazz albums I’ve heard.

Melt-Banana - "Charlie" (1998)
>noise rock, noisecore

Some great noisy pigfuck here, but marred by it's goofiness and the band's tendency to stray from what they do best. They're great when they're in pure noisecore mode, because they generally keep the humor to a minimum and focus more on pure assaults of sound. Even on tracks with large amounts of humor, like "Area 877 (Phoenix Mix)" the nearly wall-of-sound noisecore they intersperse with the spoken word samples is really great, with YaSuKo's vocals less intrusively adding some welcome humor into the mix. The more straightforward noise rock is much less impressive. It's kinda clunky and they get away from the pure noise far too often. YaSuKo's vocals may be more prominently in the spotlight, but the instrumentals aren't nearly up to snuff. Hopefully I can find something I love further into MxBx's discography, because so far I haven't been entirely impressed.

2.5-

Harmonia - Musik von Harmonia (1974)
>krautrock, progressive electronic

Much more Cluster than Neu! here, but Moebius and Roedelius aren't exactly on the top of their game here, but Rother most certainly is. The tracks that sound much more like Neu!—the motorik beat and the spacey soundscaping fully intact—mixed with Cluster's electronic noodling are wonderful krautrock tracks, groovy as hell but still incredibly cold and distant. The prog. electronic/ambient functions more as background music. Not bad, but unremarkable and lacking anything to keep me really interested. Recommended for fans of either Cluster and Neu!, but it's a mixed bag.

Spoon - Girls Can Tell (2001)
>indie rock

Very middle-of-the-road music. Spoon sound like the Beatles, Pavement, Elliott Smith, even Joy Division a little bit, but any modicum of passion is sucked out of their influences to make for a really flat, emotionless album. The sparse production sometimes works in its favor, as it avoids pointless overorchestration that kills a lot of albums in this vein, but it also leads to some boring, droning songs that go nowhere despite boasting some decent melodies and nicely consistent drumming. Decent for what it is, I guess, but 1000 other bands are making better music just like this.

Carly Rae Jepsen - E·MO·TION: Side B (2016)
>dance-pop, synthpop

Better than its parent album because it has the quality of brevity (27 minutes as compared to an incredibly bloated 65), but it lacks any real standout tracks like "Run Away With Me" or "Warm Blood". She's still got the '80s revival sound down pat. "Higher" is a pulsing, wonderful electropop track; "Cry" is a lovely little slow-burner; and "Store" boasts some incredible production, but even the greatest tracks here blend in with one another. There's not a sour note on this thing, but there's never a note that really resonates. It's incredibly pleasing, well put-together, danceable pop, and much better than other albums that fall under this description, but the genre itself just kinda lends itself to forgettableness. Still, catchy as hell.

Her Favorite Colo(u)r is the only album/tape I've heard by him. And I only listened to it on my record player like once about a year ago and I didn't really remember any major problems with it because I mainly just listen to music with my headphones and the new records I buy are mainly there for collection purposes. I mainly just use my record player for old shit I find at Goodwill, auctions, etc.

The only real album I've ever listened to on vinyl that was truly horribly mastered was My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy by Kanye West. That sounds like fucking shit on vinyl. I honestly was taken aback by how godawful that was mastered for vinyl. The packaging was pretty cool because of the 12 x 12 art inserts, but I grew out of that album pretty soon after I bought it, anyway. I still like the songs So Appalled, Runaway, and Devil In A New Dress, though.

The Andy Stott was kind of underwhelming. The last few tracks, except for the final track, seemed to lose some steam. I really liked the vocal tracks though, and it was overall a pleasant listen. I haven't listened to anything else from him so I will have to do that because I like what he does.

The Elysia Crampton was really nice! I was skeptical going into it and didn't really enjoy the first couple tracks, especially the vocal sampling on the second track, but then it totally turned me around later in the album. The vocal sampling after the second track was much better as well. I checked out American Drift as well but didn't like it as much. Demon City is one I will have to revisit.

Up next is Inga Copeland and the Tim Hecker

Jim O'Rourke - Happy Days (1997)
>drone, avant-folk

O'Rourke's first major foray info folk, and what an effort it is. There's still a major drone component, because the majority of the album's sole track is made up of various drones, but it's very earthy, guitar-based drone, the piece even beginning and ending with some guitar bits straight out of Bad Timing. It starts off incredibly well, seamlessly transitioning from some pretty guitar folk played mostly straight into dissonant drones. Loses its footing a bit in the middle when the drones take on a more sinister turn, creating a bit of a rift between the different distinct segments of the piece, and it ends on that same high note, bringing to a close an earthy, dissonant, lovely piece of drone. Not without its problems, and it's semi-sister album Bad Timing is definitely superior, but another lovely addition to O'Rourke's catalogue.

3.0+

Terry Allen - Lubbock (On Everything) (1979)
>country, progressive country, singer/songwriter

80-minute long country album just sounds like a recipe for disaster, but Allen's penchant for storytelling and the longing, melancholic vibe of the songs makes this a really good listen. The production is pretty bad, though, and I'm not all too sold on Allen's vocals (great storyteller, awful singer), but the power of the songs and Allen's delivery of them can't be bogged down that much by either of these negatives. Definitely deserves to be looked at with all the other country classics.

>Tuxedomoon - Desire
Very rarely can an album sound so boundless, yet cohesive. Plenty of left field ideas can be found on this album, but they are pulled off very well. I wasn't on board with everything here, just most of it. The atmosphere is great too.

>Rites of Spring - s/t
I really like the vocals and subject matter here. It's just too bad that they were still caught up in that cliched punk sound. This album could have used alot of songwriting liberties.

>Songs: Ohia - Didn't It Rain
Less ambitious than the album that would follow, but it's a little better at emotional delivery. I can accept that trade-off.

>ほぶらきん [Hoburakin] - Mura No Kajiya
It's incredibly hard to pull something like this off well. This is barely music. It's more of a free-from exercise in communicating anger and frustration. It works.

>ピッキーピクニック [Picky Picnic] - Lovely Water Peaceful / Blue Mountain 500 Miles Goes By
Picky Picnic always treads a fine line between charming and downright annoying. This release is the latter.

>Rae Sremmurd - Black Beatles
The only good thing I have to say about this song is the production. The vocals could use alot of work, as they just feel disjointed and listless.

>Saccharine Trust - Paganicons
Now this is the type of punk I like. Hard hitting, direct, but with just enough ideas to keep it's 16 minute run-time fresh.

I fell off the wagon, let's get back on it. Christmas is in ten days.

>Louis Armstrong (...and friends) - The Christmas Collection: 20th Century Masters

This is a weird release. It starts with a few Armstrong tracks, has an EP's worth of guest tracks, then goes back to Armstrong. I'm a bit puzzled by this decision, but this is still a solid release. The only track I would say I disliked was the Dinah Washington one; I've never been huge into the Christmas songs with prominent choirs.

>Frank Sinatra - A Jolly Christmas

Everything I've heard from Sinatra has the same problem with overstaying its welcome, and this is no exception. And his voice doesn't really suit most of the songs here; Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas is probably the best offering here for people who aren't huge Sinatra fans.

>Elvis Presley - Blue Christmas

I don't hate Elvis like a lot of /daily/ seems to, but this left a lot to be desired. The rock & roll songs are fine (title track is obviously the standout), but the attempts at Gospel were weak.

>Mariah Carey - Merry Christmas

The mid 90s were a strange and scary time. I'm glad they're behind us.

(All I Want for Christmas Is You is a guilty pleasure though)

Now for Christmas songs by some Lovecraft nerds.

The HP Lovecraft ones are apparently pretty fun, the Zorn one seems interesting, I hear the Latvian Christmas album is said to be quite an experience (is Christmas a big deal in Latvia or something? Doggo, enlighten me.), and the last three are all pretty great according to most people.

The oldies have admittedly been a bit of a letdown, though.

Babyfather - BBF Hosted by DJ Escrow (2016)
>experimental hip hop, alternative R&B

I actually like Dean Blunt a fair bit, The Redeemer and Black Metal are both fine albums, but this is such a fucking mess. It opens horribly with 5 minutes of a repeated phrase (that comes back on two separate occassions), and improves a teensy bit from there, but it never gets all that great. The forays into hip hop, R&B, grime, and all sorts of other genres are hurt by a general lack of power in the beats. It never reaches the etherealness of cloud rap, but it doesn't hit as hard as good grime or hip hop in general should, it's an odd grey area of muffled, lousy production. It's definitely creative, and you're kept on your toes listening to it, but it's a total mess that's underwhelming at best.

Street Sects - End Position (2016)
>electro-industrial, synth punk

Certainly isn't lacking in the aggression department, but you'd be hard-pressed to find a more forgettable album. It stays in one gear for it's entire 30 minutes, every song blends together in an endless mess of loud, blown-out noise. They are pretty good when they play around a lot more with straight-up noise and PE rather than NIN/Ministry-esque industrial rock/electro-industrial, the latter style making up most of the more forgettable moments on this album. It goes by really quickly, and that's not a compliment.

I don't understand Blunt's appeal at all. Is it the veneer of amateurism that draws people? The weirdness of it all?
I think he makes really nice loops, but as soon as he opens his mouth, I'm over it.

katalepsy was a bit disappointing, but then I heard another record of theirs that was most satisfactory

ATCQ was great. a triumphant finale to a great group. first half was much better than second though, but I cant fault them for wanting goodbye to be long.

Gillian Welch was pretty stellar. if you care at all for americana, go for it right away.

ordo ad chao was really good too, Atilla Csihar is such a perfect metal vocalist.

blackstar was nice. i've really only heard one bowie album before (ziggy) but I don't remember it well. not all great songs, but definitely affecting, and what a triumphant finale in "I Can't Give Everything Away"

Currituck County - Ghost Man on First (2003)
>american primitivism, contemporary folk, avant-folk

Outside of Fahey, I've rarely heard guitar playing so evocative and full of life. It's not even the technicality or the compositions themselves, there's just so much feeling and energy injected into the performances that makes every lick and every pluck completely captivating, even if the pieces are a bit derivative and not as enjoyable as the actual performances. The vocals detract from the guitar, but not too much, they're just a bit of an irritating addition rather than a total mood killer. For how great the primitivism pieces are, the most impressive thing about this album is how well it can shift to other genres, specifically on the last two tracks. "The March of the People Who Do Not Know You" certainly isn't the best attempt at black metal, but it's competent, and it's really impressive how well it manages to fit with the other tracks while still managing to be enjoyable as a slice of lo-fi, amateur black metal. "I Truly Understand", the closer, is a jaunty folk tune, complimenting it's evil, raw predecessor perfectly. Disregarding the derivativeness of the guitar pieces and the less than stellar vocals, a great modern take on primitivism.

>No Trend - Too Many Humans......
The vocals were nice and frantic, but I felt as if the instruments could have done a little more to reach the vocalist's high energy.

>Iron Lung - Sexless // No Sex
How NOT to do a grindcore album. The dull guitar riffs doesn't vibe with the mediocre vocals, at all.

>Pig Destroyer - Terrifyer
How to do a grindcore album. Good cohesion and energy throughout. The sound does not quite carry the album through it's runtime, however.

>Cheveu - Cheveu
Largely ineffective, but varied and spontaneous enough to warrant a positive first listen.

>Sun Ra - Lanquidity
The rest of the tracks just couldn't quite reach the level of perfection the first two achieved. Still a fantastic album.

>Agent Orange - Bloodstains
Melody-wise, there's nothing much going on here, but goddamn is the sound punchy and tight.

>Suicidal Tendencies - Institutionalised
I love the title track. Completely tongue-and-cheek without feeling emotionally disingenuous. The other tracks bog down this release by alot, unfortunately.

>Luciano Cilio - Dialoghi del presente
I've been meaning to listen to this for a long while. I'm glad I did, it's pretty great. I think he nailed whatever overall mood he was going for pretty perfectly. It's only drags a little bit during the movement like 3/4's of the way in. Will definitely listen again. 8/10

>Kryptic Minds - One of Us
Damn. This was bound to not go over too well for me. Not a dubstep guy by any means, but the synth patches on this sound quite generic to me, there's little variation within each song, the dark vibe is kind of cool. 3.5/10

Jangle moves on.

>Various Artists - Ecstatic Music of the Jemaa El Fna
Not that I know a single thing about Gnawa. About half of the songs actually sound ecstatic to me--those were the more interesting ones to me. The sound is horrendous, of course, because the speakers were powered with car batteries, so it's a little bit grating at times. But overall pretty raw emotional music. 6/10

>Peter Brötzmann, Joe McPhee, Kent Kessler & Michael Zerang - Tales Out of Time
This was good. It was more than I needed and I probably won't listen to the whole thing again, but there's some great tension between structure and chaos here. "Alto Lightning in a Violin Sky" sounds absolutely otherworldly. 7/10

good friend rodriguez moves on.

>Damon - Song of a Gypsy
This kind of stuff is generally up my alley. Sort of mixed feelings about this one though. There's a little bit too much pop sensibility for what it is--the love song is way too sappy. I really wanted them to let loose and jam out some stuff, which they start to do at times before cutting the songs short. And they're all a little same-y--could've just written fewer songs and fleshed out the ideas more, right? Love the tones and production and stuff though. 6/10
>>
>Guided by Voices - Under the Bushes Under the Stars
Confession: I think a majority of 90's indie rock doesn't hold up today. This doesn't change my opinion. The opener is really great and there are occasionally great ideas, but they kind of just sell way too many undercooked songs and seem to act on whatever whim they feel like. 4/10

Letov moves on.

>Simon Bookish - Everything/Everything
Pretty damn annoying at times. Here's the thing: the arrangements are pretty phenomenal and it's clear he knows how to compose, so I really admire that, but the vocals and singing melodies come across pretty condescendingly (as in, "look how stupid and ironic I've made this song" kind of vibe). Sorry if that's a stupid point to make, just distracted me. 4/10

>Cocteau Twins - Heaven or Las Vegas
Ah, I've actually heard this before my RYM days and I've loved "Cherry-Coloured Fun" for quite a while--I really think this is one of the best pop songs ever. Like someone said recently, none of the other tracks really stack up next to it, and some of it just gets kind of lost in a pop haze. Really good overall, almost great. 7.5/10

Supercluster moves on.
