There's actually a lot of good mid 00s obscure atmo sludge bands. Buried at Sea, Intronaut, Switchblade, The Ocean,Tephra (though I guess they're a little outside that date). The problem is after 2006-7, all the most famous bands became cancer because Neurosis and ISIS changed their sound, so everyone followed. Sumac and Phantom Winter are the only new bands I've found that are worth checking out in the genre, most of it is just cycled garbage though.

This was me before I got into metal and started downloading full albums. I just listened to random shit on repeat on Youtube.

doing a crazy 2016 roundup this week, focusing on metal stuff i missed now, which is a lot, because i didn't follow the genre actively this year. Here's what i've sampled so far/got on my plate:

40 Watt Sun - Wider than the Sky (heard the opening track, thought it was kinda corny)
Frontierer - Orange Mathematics (was impressed from the half i heard)
Khemmis - Hunted
Cobalt - Slow Forever
Abbath - Abbath (enjoyed what I heard a solid amount)
Harakiri for the Sky - III: Trauma
Virus - Memento Collider (sounds like post-punk and metal combined, kinda put off by the singer who reminded me of Protomartyr lol)
Jute Gyte - Perdurance
Cult of Luna - Mariner (listening now, vocal interplay is pretty cool, though also a little cheesey)
Metallica - Hardwired....
Oathbreaker - Rheia


If you can't tell, its vocals in metal that put me off more than anything else. Black metal is my favorite. Got any comments on those, or other recommendations for me? Thanks!

Oh, I thought we were talking about his solo stuff, not SYL. Out of all his work, I too like City the most, and I agree that it's an interesting entry in metal history.
But I feel that it too falls short of the impact it's supposed to make; this insane, over the top, melodies and aggression in synergy, but never actually goes over the top, never actually pushing the idea in risky territories, but constantly reminding you with song structure that it's bat-shit insane which, in all honesty it isn't, at least for me.

And when that insanity-illusion is broken for me, the only thing that's left is the music on it's own merit, and it just didn't stand the test of time. I liked it when I was younger, because it was fresh but looking back at it, it really wasn't that special.

So you're just describing what the entire appeal of his music is? No other artist has been able to recreate the sound and vibes Devin has on albums like Ocean Machine that comes from a combination of things like the wall of sound, simple riffs and being drenched in effects. You don't listen to Devin Townsend to hear some dude play a billion notes a second, you listen to it for the emotional honestly. Being as emotionally honest as Devin is is the exact opposite of being shallow.

Korpiklaani, seen them twice and they're fucking BOMB. It special since they were the first metal CD I ever purchased, and 4 or 5 years later I'd been dance moshing in the pit to them. Amon Amarth is sick to, just sucks that they really stick to their hits. Saw them on the day of my 18th birthday around when Deceiver of the Gods came out and got to shake their hands and get it signed (even though it's my least favorite album) Also, I'm not sure if you like Agalloch, but they were like fucking magic live, it just sucks they aren't around anymore.
