It's December 25th in Australia! Make sure to wish them Merry Christams!

"The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time."

>Candy Claws - Ceres and Calypso in the Deep Time
At first i really didn't enjoy how compressed everything was, but towards the end of my first listen and during the second listen it really started to grow on me. It provides an interesting soundscape for the lush instrumentation to build on. All of the melodies are so bright and sparkly and it's cool how they sort of meander in and out of the hazy textures produced by the bass. There are moments of clarity that crop up throughout the album where all of the elements work perfectly together to create super blissful moments. I wish there had been a bit more wall of sound shoegazey moments cause they seemed to go away after the first few songs. I also wish the songs were more connected to each other with transitions instead of just ending the song and starting the next one cause the silence in between takes away from atmosphere of the album. green diamond/10

Sibylle Baier - Colour Green
I liked listening to this; it is extremely pretty and pleasant. The lyrical themes are mostly mundane, but it works really well with the simple beauty of the vocals and guitar. And it is well written and eloquent anyway. Tonight is the clear standout, and I like Softly and Wim a lot too.

I added a couple rows based on the recs from people in the last thread (thanks :3) and the daily album chart.

Ill start with the second row.

>File Under Pop - Heathrow
An interesting little sonic experiment that is 90 percent field recordings, and ten percent spoken word over guitar noodling. It's effective, but it's ideas demanded a little more breathing room than what a single can provide.

>Trio - s/t
Yikes. A tongue and cheek pastiche of popular music tropes in the vein of Frank Zappa or early Ween. A few good ideas, but overall lacks quality control. This album feels thrown together, and I mean that in the worst way possible.

>Tragic Mulatto - Hot Man Pussy
It's like a female fronted Laddio Bolocko. That's really good. Unfortunately, it suffers the same pitfall of perseverating on ideas that isn't all that interesting at times.

>Red Balune - Capitalist Kid
I don't even know. Very rarely does a punk single leave me at a loss for words. This is less of a "punk" single really. It's more of a full-on assault to the senses. I don't know how to put my experience into words, but I can say that it was positive.

>Alternative TV - The Force is Blind
It's alright.

>UFO or Die - Shock Shoppers / Zombie Tube
I'm not even going to pretend to know how to review this shit.

>Cresent - Collected Songs
I wrote about this earlier so I won't go too in-depth (like I ever do anymore), but this is incredible.

>Major Lazer - Original Don
Okay track bogged down by unnecessary remixes. I can get into it too much right now, but I bet that this would be alot of fun at a party.

>Neutral Milk Hotel - On Avery Island
This lacked the creative fervor and concept that would make ITAOTS, well, ITAOTS. It's still a damn good album that is worth your time.

>Grimes - Visions
Holy shit the production on this album is incredibly boring. A handful of the tracks had nice chord progressions and vocals, but it's all packaged in the blandest wrapping paper imaginable. Good ideas are one thing, but they are nothing if they aren't presented well.

Mort Garson - The Zodiac: Cosmic Sounds (1967)
>psychedelic rock, spoken word

It's cheesy, but it's a much different kind of cheesy than Plantasia. Plantasia is a really pretty, low-key, endearing kind of cheesy, this is much more bombastic and over-the-top. The instrumentals are solid psych exercises with solid drum work and some blistering guitars, but Garson's own spoken word additions are less than stellar. They're monotonous as hell and they take away from anything good the instrumentals might be doing, and they're really corny and overbearing to boot. The instrumentals are good and varied enough to keep this a decent listen, but the spoken word really does hurt it a lot.

2.5-

R. Stevie Moore - Delicate Tension (1978)
>art rock, art punk, lo-fi indie

Some lo-fi jangly punk jams, cool but certainly not anything special. Moore is definitely a big musical inspiration, but he's got some obvious weakness. His instrumental tracks constantly rank among his best, he's an irritating vocalist, sometimes in an interesting way but often in a really, well, irritating way. His synth experiments are low points, they're experiments in the most pure definition of the word, and they rarely work. Tracks where he sings less and lets the traditional rock/punk instrumentation do the talking are really quite great, and testaments to the songwriting skill this man so obviously has, but that he so often masks with pointless filler.

montie if you're reading this for the love of christ stop with the politics

Musica Elettronica Viva - Leave the City (1970)
>free improvisation

The two pieces are rather interminable, and they focus more on creating a mish-mash of random sounds rather than any sort of cohesive whole. "Cosmic Communion" is the superior of the two, it starts off very unfocused but it eventually works its way into becoming a very dark, dismal folk track, with the last 5 minutes or so making up for the noodling of the first 20. "Message" focuses entirely on this noodling. It's not terrible, some good ideas are present and the general claustrophobic vibe they're getting at is done well, it's just incredibly overlong and incredibly uninteresting to listen to. Mood music, I guess, and I'm not in that specific mood now, and I doubt I'll really ever be.

John Fahey - Live in Tasmania (1981)
>american primitivism

The opening two tracks comprise of what is arguably Fahey's greatest one-two punch. I love Fahey's ultra-fast, ultra-technical style, and that style is perfected here. Track one is comprised of The Transfiguration of Blind Joe Death's "On the Sunny Side of the Ocean", the re-named "Tasmanian Two-Step" from After the Ball, and The Yellow Princess' "Lion", re-named "Tiger". I don't like After the Ball at all, but its track is mashed up so perfectly with the other two tracks to create one long 13-minute piece of primitivism that's as constantly enthralling and enjoyable as it is a technical marvel to hear. The second track is "The Approaching of the Disco Void", a piece never recorded for a studio album, and it's fucking incredible. One of Fahey's more dissonant, nightmarish pieces, and, as always, an absolute behemoth from a technical standpoint. The rest is your standaed Fahey stuff. It's great, obviously, but the record is rendered a bit obsolete by the lack of any major difference from his studio recordings, a very notable characteristic on this album's first two tracks as well as on The Great Santa Barbara Oil Slick. The first two tracks are among Fahey's most shining accomplishments, the rest is a decent addendum to his studio works.

/daily/, what was the worst album you listened to this year? Pic definitely related.
>>
Steve Gunn was fine the other night. He's got insane guitar chops, but I can't help but think it's all a little too uptight and safe for the brand of psych they're going for. They played a freak-out at one point, but that also seemed a bit forced.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, Endless Boogie was gnarly. They just played one long krautrock-y jam. See them if you can, it was pretty out there.

Finally, not to drive an old point home, this pitchfork list is worthless. Usually I find a couple good songs I missed during the year.

>Liliput - Die Matrosen

Man, I am thrilled to come across this. One of the major pitfalls that come with punk 45 surfing is that you tend to come across alot of boring shit. It's releases like this that remind me of why I do it in the first place. I will only go in depth with the A side.

First of all, lets look at the song structure. Rather than establishing a clear cut verse/chorus/bridge dichotomy, Liliput delivers it's message in three pieces. One with vocals, the others without. Bay of Pigs did something similar in their song "Addiction" (essential san-fran art punk, go check it out), and it's almost as effective there as it is here. There is something about this structure that is incredibly appealing, although I can't quite put my finger on it.

The first piece of this song features bass, drums, vocals, guitar, and an unidentifiable brass instrument. The chord progression is just your basic i-VI-VII-i ordeal, but it's presented in a fashionable way. The bass guitarist, for one, isn't blandly chugging out one note per chord. He/she seems to be comfortable with his/her instrument, and plays multiple notes within his/her scale. Also, the brass instrument creates an oddly satisfying harmony with the vocals. The guitar tone is pretty good. It's nothing groundbreaking, but it carries the song well. Keep in mind that this part is in C minor

The second piece modulates from a C minor to F major. The chord progression is now I-vi-IV-V and the original groove and guitar riff is now accompanied with jovial and upbeat whistling. Whats impressive is that the key change doesn't feel out of place or unnatural, due to the continuation of the groove that started off the song (It's also worth mentioning that the first piece didn't sound sinister or depressing enough to warrant much surprise over a sudden modulation to a major key).

The third piece goes into F minor. This is by far the most ominous part of the song. I don't know what exact chord progression they use here, but I do know that the song goes up and down a few notes of the chromatic scale. This part in particular is special, as it contains no vocals whatsoever, and all of the instruments play simplified parts. This feels more like an interlude.

These three parts play in succession until it ends with the second part. The song feels like it ends on a happy note, due to the closer being in a major key.

I love this song, mainly because of it’s emotional range. Liliput achieves more depth in one song than many of it’s contemporaries can’t even do in entire albums. In three parts, Liliput successfully communicates a broad range of feelings to it’s listener. The common, vitriolic, day-to-day drive in the first song, gleeful mania in the second, and sheer consternation in the third. All packaged in one hell of a catchy, female-fronted post-punk song.

The B side is nice too.

I'm really exited to see what they do on their next album because they all got custom Microtonal guitars made (although if the single is any indication, they don't really know how to use them yet) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-i1XZc8ZwA

Bunny Wailer - Blackheart Man (1976)
>roots reggae

Standard reggae stuff. A lot more poppy and upbeat than the excellent, apocalyptic cover suggests, and it's enjoyable but ultimately forgettable. The title track and "This Train", the album's longest tracks and its opener and closer, respectively, are the album's best, unraveling different motifs and sounds over extended periods of time while still hanging on to a simple, soulful groove that keeps everything in place. The other tracks follow similar formulas, Bunny's soulful, passionate vocals the major constant, but their short runtimes make them seem infinitely less memorable and subtle, far too simple and poppy to have any real resonance. No matter what, it's still a solid, enjoyable album.

2.5+

Nathan Abshire - The Good Times Are Killing Me (1975)
>cajun

Rip-roaring good time. Loud, blown-out accordions; passionate vocals; a drummer having the time of his life; everything here combines to make for one hell of a fun exhilirating album. Every single track sounds exactly the same, and I always hate that in an album, but the sound here is so good and the band is in perfect sync, so I can't hate that aspect /too/ much.

Mortuus - De Contemplanda Morte (2007)
>black metal

Fuzzy, slow-paced, doomy black metal. Doesn't have the energy or the blistering infernality we all know and love from the genre, but it succeeds in it's own ways. It blurs the line between typical BM and atmospheric BM, not as raw as the former but much more lo-fi and exhilirating than the latter. It sometimes seems confused in trying to find any sort of consistent sound or identity, but more often than not it's focused more on kick-ass riffs and some absolutely pummeling drum work. Good album, albeit too unsure of itself to truly achieve greatness.

I cried today. I can't remember the last time I did, but it happened today. Even right now, there's tears streaming down my face. But I don't know why. I don't understand myself. >Tim Buckley - The Peel Sessions
I really tend not to care for these acoustic singer-songwriter albums. I could not get into Astral Weeks at all, despite people's endless praise for it.
I feel kind of the same way about this. It sure is nice to listen to, but I don't connect with it on an emotional level like others must do.
However, I do prefer the vocals and instrumentation in this than other albums of its kind. The bongos are a really, really nice touch.
Hallucinations/Troubador is a great, seamless 10 minute ballad, and is obviously the shining moment in this EP. I'll probably check out his other albums because of it. I'm listening to it again as I type this, it's actually quite fantastic.
The other songs are just okay, except for Morning Glory which I really dislike because the way he sings on it just bothers me.

>Animal Collective - Prospect Hummer
The first half of this EP is great. Vashti is an incredible vocalist, and I will definitely be checking out her solo stuff.
Baleen Sample is a perfect example of a bad Animal Collective song. I actually liked it at first, but the more I listen to it, the more I just find it repetitive and annoying. It's so directionless and there's just nothing to it. As for the last song, it ends just as its getting started.

Fire! Orchestra – Ritual (2016)
>Free Jazz, Big Band, Vocal Jazz, Jazz Rock
The intro is a little bit abrupt (I guess I prefer a small buildup before the chaos starts), but the energy immediately catches on. The sax wanking at the beginning of the second track is a bit irritating at first, but makes sense as soon as the rest of the instrumentation joins in. The vocals are a bit too prominent for my taste on this song (which is actually the case throughout the whole 50 minutes), but there’s still a lot of groove and power that makes this an interesting listen. Track 3 starts with a noise section that evolves into a surprisingly smooth song. The next one sounds more like noise rock than jazz with a focus on percussion and distorted guitars, probably my favorite track on here. The album ends on the softer side, really chill closer.
Their sound is already familiar from their previous releases, but there definitely has been some kind of development. In my opinion this is better than Enter!, but doesn’t reach the heights of Exit!. 6/10

Finally finished my chart, took me only about half a year lol

>Hüsker Dü - Flip Your Wig
A weird album, because it’s so similar to New Day Rising, yet so distinctly inferior. The songwriting has changed remarkably little—I could probably spot Bob Mould or Grant Hart songwriting a mile away by now—but the experimentation has been replaced with more of the same melodic proto-alternative-whatever. It doesn’t help that these songs are also not nearly as catchy as those on any album prior (save for the relatively forgettable first album, Everything Falls Apart) despite a more pop-geared approach over their more engagingly interesting and aggressive melodic hardcore.

Only by the very end of the album does the band begin to experiment (I don’t know if they think they’ve run out of pop tunes or something, and this is just filler? Either way, it’s a welcome break) with the dynamic of edgy lead vocals and soft backing vocals on “Keep Hanging On”, the tortured extended guitar solos and gloomy bass riffs of “The Wit and the Wisdom”, or the psychedelic backmasking of “Don’t Know Yet”. They pulled the same crap on New Day Rising with the insane run of closing tracks “How to Skin a Cat”, “Whatcha Drinkin’”, and “Plans I Make” being the most experimental and markedly ‘punk’ on the album. Only difference is that every song leading up to them on New Day Rising was instantly memorable.

Maybe this will grow on me, but right now it’s surprisingly disappointing. Not to say it’s absolutely abysmal, it’s just nowhere near as good as any studio effort prior. Really not digging the pop direction, to say the least.
>6/10

In other news, I think I’ve listened to Zen Arcade about a dozen times now, and New Day Rising’s play count is catching up fast. There’s an absurd number of just-so-perfect songs between the two.

Eh I guess I expected it to be worse, for some reason, it's actually quite nice. I still think it's extremely overrated, but it did left a vaguely positive impression.

>Sonic Youth - Bad Moon Rising
Wow, this is better than daydream nation in almost every facet. I loved the long winded ambient industrial sounding guitar passages between that built up to the songs with vocals. The tension is so thick and the whole time is feels like something sinister is going on in the background. The monotone vocal delivery perfectly compliments the bleak instrumentals and i loved how the male and female vocals twisted around each other on Death Valley '69. The buildup on that song is insane and it's a huge relief when it finally breaks and the song comes to an end. I version i listened to had 4 bonus tracks that included some of my favorite moments on the album minus the satan song which was pretty edgy and forgettable. Halloween is amazing. It has a seductive vocal style that brings you in, but once your there you can't help but feel like something is very wrong. The way fuck is shouted on Flower is so satisfying to listen to and the screechy guitars give it an apocalyptic feel. A thoroughly enjoyable and engaging listen. green diamond/10

Acteurs - I W I
Ehhh no. It's p dull and empty, and while music is tolerable, the vocals are really bad. The use of noises is flat and meaningless.

Phantogram - Nightlife
Acceptable, but pretty boring. Phantogram in general is pretty cheesy, but has some catchy tracks, this release lacks even that. You can't say it's made badly though.

Steve Roach - Structures From Silence
A nice and pleasant thing indeed. Guess I thought it's gonna have more "space" in there, but it's ok, I like it anyway.

The Microphones - Mount Eerie, 8-
That's quite amazing, didn't even expect that. The first track especially, the rest are different, yet cool. I usually I am indifferent towards vocals like this, but I actually liked them here. Cautiously optimistic just yet, but I think I'd like to relisten to the piece sometime soon and maybe I will appreciate it more.

The Cure - Disintegration, 7+
Good kind of lush music. I liked "Pornography" as well, but this is something closer.

Slowdive - Souvlaki, 7~

Maria Bethânia - Recital na boite Barroco (1968)
>MPB, bossa nova, tropicália

Bethânia's singing voice is most definitely the worst aspect of this record, and when so many of these songs hinge on the presence of a powerful, boisterous singer, the record suffers as a result. She's not really that bad, just very flat and unremarkable, her energy is nowhere near in sync with the energy of the music. Musically, it's quite good. Not the best MPB in the world, and some jazzy tracks feel out of place, but its got some great arrangements and a generally chill, pleasing atmosphere. Lukewarm, but not without merit.

because all good releases were either released by well known labels we pretend are obscure indie startups, or are from well established multi millionaires "branching out in a new direction."

Charanjit Singh - Synthesizing: Ten Ragas to a Disco Beat (1982)
>electro-disco, acid house, progressive electronic

Definitely a cool historical album, and the basic beat is actually pretty damn cool, even when looked at through a modern lens, but it's so ungodly repetitive and it hasn't exactly aged well. I say "the basic beat" because every beat here is pretty much exactly the same: same tempo, same synth lines, same everything pretty much. It's fun to listen to the first couple of times, but it gets old. The combination of disco/house with traditional Indian melodies is the main thing that dates it, it's occasionally cool and it's implemented decently well, but it gets corny and the same melodies are overused to the point where they add nothing to their respective tracks. Nonetheless, it is very forward thinking, but there are very major problems with it that can't be overlooked, making for a spotty album at best.

2.0+

Slapp Happy / Henry Cow - Desperate Straights (1975)
>rock in opposition, progressive pop, art pop

Falls off in the b-side, delving into a lot more noodly, free-form territory, but the a-side is possibly the finest marriage of prog and pop I've ever heard. The two bands never sacrifice their progressive, experimental tendencies to appeal to more pop sensibilities, and they always maintain a wonderfully melodic core despite experimenting a lot with song structures and genre switches. The a-side, containing 7 concise pop songs, is wonderful. The b-side, closing with an 8-minute horn/piano piece, doesn't appeal to me nearly as much. Henry Cow can do straight-up prog well by themselves, Slapp Happy's pop leanings make their prog experiments seem long-winded and uninterested in comparison. Never bad, but the quality divide is obvious. No matter what, this is a very good record.

Jorge Ben - Forca Bruta
Fantastic, upbeat and fun MPB that manages to keep it's charm through the whole album.
8.0 /10

Tal National - Kaani
This album is a hoot, and the layering is fantastic, but it gets a little too samey and repetitive.
7.0 /10

John Fahey - Vol 4
A mixture of delicate guitar work and a 4 year old playing with a new noisy christmas toy. The first track has some interesting tape work but the rest suffers from the clearly novice approach.
6.0 /10 (Nat on suicide watch)

Ketil Bjornstad & David Darling - The River
What can I say, I'm a basic minimalism bitch now. This is a beautiful album with a little more direction than traditional minimalism; very evocative and emotive instrumental work.

Young Thug - JEFFERY (2016)
>trap rap, southern hip hop

This guy's idiosyncrasies are finally growing on me. Thug's vocal performance is one of the best I've heard on a rap album in quite some time, he alternates between outlandish, loud, spastic rapping and passionate, scratchy singing and does both of them incredibly well, elevating the simplest beats much further than they honestly deserve to go. The tape does rely a /bit/ too much on Thug's vocals, however. The features are underwhelming save for Wyclef Jean, and the beats are some pretty typical trap stuff. "Wyclef Jean" (really confusing that he's both a track title and a feature) has a really pleasant, dancehall-esque beat, "Harambe" goes hard as hell, and "Pick Up the Phone" has some awesome, thick tropical vibes on display, but other than those beats the rest aren't memorable at all, and they do a disservice to Thug's performance. I'm totally on board with Thug himself, but the production on this mixtape is too underwhelming for it to really be an exceptional listen.
