Hi guys! I am thinking on upgrading my amp and cabinet. I currently own a micro dark with a bugera 1x12 cabinet. I want an amp head that can go from blues/jazz, to metal(prog metal). My budget is $1,500(If it's less than $1000 even better). Thanks in advance. The guitars that I own are: Prs se custom 24, and a Guild OM-140CE. Just in case you are wondering.

I have a Behringer UMC202HD that I got for like $50 with a shitty mic. The mic isn't great, but plugging straight into the interface sounds good enough. The only problem I have is that it has two line-ins and each one is either the left channel or right channel, so to get sound coming out of both speakers, you need to change it in post.

Hey everybody! (Hi Dr. Nick)
I'm going to be getting this guitar in the mail tomorrow would anybody be interested in me doing a review on it? If you want send me a type of genre or song you want me to play on the Mustang

Also for all the Chicago bros last thread I'm in Logan Square. Also guy with the gold Strat and comfy setup I've been pretty good and busy recently, shitposting here has been rare. Taking a break off work and school for gigs and an EP. Also I think I heard of your band before, my cousin might've put me on you guys

Finally, to the other anon asking about CME, yes I've been there and it's glorious. If you're just going to fuck around and try out guitars worth more than your car it's highly enjoyable and you might be in there for hours. The selection is Gibson/PRS/Fender/Fender copies/Gretsch/Rickenbacker/Airline and a bit of others but it's all good and having the highest valued models makes it easier to find what you're looking for in a guitar. I once had a 3 hour Surf rock jam with a Vintage CAR Mosrite and a 1966 Fender Deluxe Reverb.

Has anyone tried a Gonkulator in an FX loop? I play electric violin and usually I run most effects through the loop, which solves a lot of problems for my instrument, but certain boxes (like an OD) obviously shouldn't be used in the loop, since youve already passed the preamp and itll sound like shit

so is a gonkulator viable in an FX loop or will it just sound like shit

How do I set up my tremolo bridge on my 7 string?

After removing one spring, making the claw very loose, adjusting the screws on the bridge(outer ones tighter, inner looser)lowering the saddles it's still stiff as hell, not to mention that it doesn't go up
>>
>>69638497
What trem is it ?
In any case, both the tension of the strings and the tension of the springs must match each other, so if the strings have more, it'll be harder to pull up the trem.
>>
>>69638531
Vintage strat style,6 screws

Right now you can't pull at all,in resting position it touches the body
>>
>>69638547
You need the trem to "float" a little bit then, with the 6 screws not screwed all the way through and the "plate" of the trem not touching the body, but still being parrallel with it.
It's basically the same as you'd do with a strat, but since you have 7 strings, you have more tension on the strings, meaning you may also need additional springs.
Setting up the trem that way requires a lot of patience though.
What's the guitar by the way ? Usually manufacturers go all out and put a (cheap) floyd rose copy on it.
>>
>>69638578
It's a very budget choice,Jack and Danny 780

Floating it was my intention, but i think i've done something wrong since, well, it doesnt float

Pretty much i want to get it to the state that it is in this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fHC5vystzn4
>>
>>69638606
>budget
good luck with that, cheap trems are hell.
you may need to lift it a bit in order to float
>>
>>69638634
By lifting it, do you mean manually lifting it when the springs are removed and the screws loosened,or fiddling with the setup?
Because i thought this is determined by the interaction between this 2 factors

And yes,the cheapness is showing
>>
>>69637534
Epis range from sub squier tier to ok sometimes. The only ones I've played that I can somewhat reccomend are the semi hollows.
>>
>>69638673
manually lifting it yes, then you set up the action again once it is in a good position
>>
>>69637825
>buying a chink guitar

>>
>>69637534
I had an Epi LP Custom just like the one on the right for years. Great guitar, electronics were cheap but easily sorted. I put a set of Burstbuckers in mine and it sounded great, although I believe the new ones come with them now. Mine was an early 2000s Korean one, not sure what the quality is like on the new ones but seeing as prices have jumped I would expect it to be very good.

If you are looking at high end Epiphone have a look at low end Gibson too, the studio faded series are really good. The open pore satin finish polarises opinion so make sure you try one first.

Would I be able to overdrive a solid state bass amp head with a line booster?

I'm trying to avoid bass overdrive pedals cause most I've tried that aren't boutique suck fucking dick and boutique are too expensive. I'm trying to overdrive the amp for that Geddy Lee/Chris Squire sound and was wondering if I could just do that with a booster and not have to worry about losing too much low end.
>>
>>69639691
You could also get any form of a Sansamp pedal and crank the gain/presence/character knobs. They used the Sansamp v1s early on, the ones without Mid control. Those ones always sound better.
>>
>>69639854

Yeah as much as I keep dilly-dallying around it the answer ends up being "get a sansamp bitch."

I usually play with a lot of overdrive/fuzz/distortion on certain frequencies on bass, that wouldn't fuck around with the DI if I'm forced to use it by soundmen or whatever, would it?
>>
>>69639924
Realistically, using the Sansamp doesn't alter the distorted tone if you're smart about using the Sansamp.

It's a preamp in pedal form, so you can run it through the front of your SS amp, or defeat it's preamp. As long as it's all set for unity gain, it's all good. The biggest change you'll notice in tone is the presence and how clanky your sound will get, which would emulate the old Ric tones off Fly By Night/Relayer fairly accurately.
>inb4 someone else says get a Ric
>>
>>69639924
>>69639970 This guy again.

One more point, if you're going for authenticity with the two bassist's tones, you're gonna need more than just distortion/OD.

Geddy used the faintest touch of chorus in the early days because his producer insisted on trying manual flanging on the tape recorders, so all his bass tracks have mild flange/chorus. You can set the delay speed low, and use a minimal effect; best example is in The Trees. That's all chorus effect.

For Squire, use an octaver, set for an octave up. In the studio for all of Yes' early and best work, he dubbed his parts over several times with guitars so he'd fill out the sound the rest of the band wasn't getting. Using the octaver, you can safely emulate it without fucking anything up. Hope this all helps!

It does, thank you lots. I would just get a Rickenbacker and a Marshall Super Bass and just run it through a bass cab, but that's pretty expensive haha. And I already own a Jazz Bass so.

I'm not really trying just to copy them, but I really enjoy how overdriven bass sounds. Lou Barlow and Al Cisneros come to mind too, and they all played Rics haha.

In that case, try and find a good, used Peavey T-40 on Reverb (they go from $500-800). One of those with a fresh set of Roto 66s will get you where you want in no time. It sounds like a Ric, feels like a Ric, weighs as much as a boat anchor, but who cares, you've got the Ric tone! Their stock pups are fairly high gain so it's got that sound right off the bat.

I took the trem arm off my strat years ago and haven't seen it since. I don't really have tuning issues, but is there any reason why I shouldn't block the tremolo?
>>
>>69643242
block the fucking shit so it's easier to tune when you change strings and just tune in general. When you tune a string on a trem bridge/saddle the diffirence in tension from that adjustments fucks up the tension/tuning of the other strings.

FUCK strat trems (floyd rose would be fun tho).

can anybody reccomend the cheapest possible/but also worth having 2x12 cab for someone trying to get a good metal tone. I'm thinking it's going to have to be V30s, for that modern metal grunt.

I'd ideally like an orange ppc212 but it's pretty expensive. Harley Benton have a 2x12 loaded with v30s for the same price as just the v30s so that's somewhat questionable.

He hates players who build off pentatonics.

Question:

Pat, could you tell us your opinion about Kenny G - it appears you were quoted as being less than enthusiastic about him and his music. I would say that most of the serious music listeners in the world would not find your opinion surprising or unlikely - but you were vocal about it for the first time. You are generally supportive of other musicians it seems.
Pat's Answer:

Kenny G is not a musician I really had much of an opinion about at all until recently. There was not much about the way he played that interested me one way or the other either live or on records.

I first heard him a number of years ago playing as a sideman with Jeff Lorber when they opened a concert for my band. My impression was that he was someone who had spent a fair amount of time listening to the more pop oriented sax players of that time, like Grover Washington or David Sanborn, but was not really an advanced player, even in that style. He had major rhythmic problems and his harmonic and melodic vocabulary was extremely limited, mostly to pentatonic based and blues-lick derived patterns, and he basically exhibited only a rudimentary understanding of how to function as a professional soloist in an ensemble - Lorber was basically playing him off the bandstand in terms of actual music.

sounds decent? 1x12 isn't enough but a 2x12 should do for modern metal with a boosted peavey ValveKing. I really feel like the speakers i'm using now in this cab are really holding back my tone. Just the fact that the speakers are the same price as the 2x12 kind of concerns me. Thanks for saying they're legit. Hopefully it is.

>>
>>69646998
chink craftsmanshit and buying in bulk, plus the lack of any kind of advertising means they can sell it much cheaper.
I haven't had the chance to compare it directly with other cabs but it's okay. It's not a mind-blowing tone but it's clear enough and doesn't get muddy.
I wouldn't trust the cab itself to be extremely sturdy, it's about 10kg heavy too, so no doubt it's plywood. But at that price, the cab is kinda "free", so I can't complain about it.
2x12 should definitely do it, I've used my 1x12 a few times with my friends, the only time I had trouble hearing myself was when we were playing in a ~9 square meter room drunk.
>>
>>69647212
okay cool thanks for the response.

True, chinks could build a nation with just a hammer and a bowl of rice.

Yeah i wasn't expecting it to be mind-blowing and i really like the sound of a mesa with v30s or an orange with v30s. they just sound better.

As long as it's v30s then it'll sound at least decent/good. If the cab is strong enough to hold a 100 watt head then it's perfectly fine who cares. To be honest i could just take my current "cab" and customise it. take the shitty speakers out of it, remove the marshall badge and make it a closed back crudely with a new back.

I'm using celestion goldbacks. fucking awful

also there's a visual clue to help you get the rhythm right
>>
>>69647703

>>69647759

Realistically 90% of people with tubescreamers are just using it as a boost. Myself included.
>>
>>69648511
The other 10% like put in in the trash cause its garbage
>>
>>69648511
i have my OD always on with gain at minimum and tone at noon, and level about as loud as the clean signal.
>>
>>69648511
i have an OD Glove on as a boost when i'm using playing metal. As a boosted clean channel for broken cleans it's still just volume boost and no gain and it sounds great but if i want a slightly more than broken cleans driven sound i put the gain on it to around 2/10. never more.

Sounds good

it's a boost 90% of the time though

I dont even like him. But what youre doing is whining, cause you act like a baby and get mad when things happen you dont like. Get over it, no amount of propaganda fueled rage is going to change anything. Apparently people like you and chris chan think so, but youre wrong.

Why do you keep posting here?

No one appreciates anything you have to say.

You add nothing to discussion and bite at every bit of bait waved in front of you.

Your continued presence here simply makes things worse.
