>>
>>69598344
you're probably tensing up too much when you strum and you're probably using your entire arm to strum. arm strumming can work fine, but it gets tiring, you want most of the motion coming from your wrist

put the guitar down and just shake your wrist and arm around, that's kind of the feeling you want when you strum
>>
>>69598457
practicing hammer ons and pull offs now. basically i position index finger and hammer on using the middle finger for at least a minute, then the subsequent fingers, and i force myself to make as much sound for as long as possible. seemed pretty stupid at first but my hammer ons and overall finger stability kind of increased so i keep on doing it

Practice different patterns to a metrnome. If youre just strumming chords in a band its more important to fit in with everything else than having something unique, if you can do both great but dont destroy the rhythm trying to show off.

Learn what chords are in a key. Say A minor, the root will sound good with Am, Am7, Asus2(depending on the song it might be too poppy or too ambiguous), and a bunch of others, but generally the root should be pretty simple and then you can get weird from there. And you dont have to necessarily change chords. Same key, say bass player goes from C to A, you can ride Cmaj for both because C major contains 3 out of 4 notes you can use for Am7(C E G vs A C E G). Another thing you can do, if bass player is going from A to F, you can start out on Am then go to an Am6 inversion(A F A C) that would actually make it Fmaj/A(f major over a) in that instance, which would add some cool tension.

Its really open ended, and you can experiment by changing one note in a chord shape, or playing the same note in each chord, like going through a Gmaj Dmaj Em Cmaj progression but playing a D on the b string in every chord.

Build the chords out of the scale, if you want to change keys you can easily do it by finding smiliar tones between them

>>
>>69598591
light picks also making strumming easier, but light picks aren't that great for lead playing because you can't control them that well
>>
>>69598605
install locking tuners/replace nut with graphite nut/lubricate string slots with pencil/replace strings with higher gauge (not sure about this one)
>>
>>69598605
Most Gibsons have this problem. Spend a while stretching out the strings if you already haven't, and if it still goes way out of tune really easily, check the nut to see if it's cut properly.
>>
>>69598605
stretch your strings

if its still going out of tune then its probably the nut. when you tune do you hear any popping creaky sounds? if so then your nut slots are too small and your string is binding in them
>>
>>69598632
Any locking tuners I can get that aren't the price of a new guitar?
>>
>>69598667
dont take my word for it, I've never replaced tuners before, but many people claim they work, and my epiphone flying v that has locking tuners does hold tune better than my gibson flying v with traditional ones.

install a thumb rest on your bass

then you can focus on just using your fingers
>>
>>69598863
yes its quite important
>>
>>69598945
Depends on your muting technique, with floating thumb your shoulder basically provides the tension which you're plucking against. With anchored thumb you are, well, anchored so that works. Make sure to warm up before playing, just play across the open strings or get in a groove. It honestly just takes time to get the muscle memory.

>>
>>69598863
It's also useful for matching tension across a set, here as the B has only 11#, you may want to go up a gauge to .012 or .013 even, if the tension felt better/more even across the set. You can make your own custom sets. It's why you can buy singles, instead of pre-made sets.

Nice meme.

I mean the guitar, not your post.

Honestly, i think id really like a strat thats rear routed, has control placement more similar to an sg(1 vol, 1 tone, 1 switch is fine), no pickguard, pickups mounted with pic related, and a trem that worked like a bigsby(but bigsbys on fenders look horrible)
>>

classic tele models are pretty annoying. hunk of bridge metal right in front of the back pickups.
>>
>>69600024
It doesnt, but on some pickups it does give a different sound, and lower output. Ive used split buckers on more than a few occasions. Some just sound bad split, i had some dimarzio evos like that, and a couple stacked buckers that were just horrible split. If you find a nice one though it opens up a couple doors.

Nononononoohgodpleaseno it's a shit company that removes features and ad more advertisement to sell there shit subscription that doesn't fix any of the issues, also the tabs are user created so alot of them are just inaccuret

>chubby fingers
Lol everybody thinks this when they start out, you will get it eventually, make sure your fingers lay on the string propperly not to high as in touching the nail aka "claw gripping" and not to far to the hump on you fingers

My advise for anyone new learn the way notes work in other words

a a# b c c# d d# e f f# g g# (b and e dont have a sharp)

Now learn to find them on the top strings
(E & A)

Then the octave shapes (see justin guitar)

Now you should know every note on the fretboard

There after learn how chords are formed, then scales and so on.

Soon you"ll be able to figure out the songs yourself by just listening to them like all the guitar gods did before the internet

D 5
A 5
E 3

I would recommend a coping saw, a jig saw would be quicker but im assuming youve never used one or that would have been your first thought. You would need experience with a jig saw to make that cut clean. And youd probably have to take the tuners off.

So, coping saw. Dont forget to reseal that maple after youre done. Itll be noticeable, but if you dont damage the finish on the front it wont be that noticeable. Get a spray can of lacquer or rub on poly depending on whats on there now.

Also, this is a bad idea.
>>
>>69601535
ya 40c. I like the wattage modes. good for practice and ample for gigs

the eq is a little subtle, but I love the sound of adding more bass in

the sound definitely is not for everyone, but it works great for me.

I second suggestion on addressing how and where you are anchoring thumb.

Secondly, the first part of my warmup is a good 5-10 minutes of all playing triplets. I use three fingers and go tri (ring finger) ple (middle) it (index), tri (ring finger) etc. Or with two fingers you can do tri (middle finger) ple (index) it (middle), tri (index) ple (middle) it (index).

Or whichever order of fingers is comfy. With three finger style i find it more natural to go ring-middle-index instead of index-middle-ring.

Get faster and cleaner with this and you can run through scales or whatever you like with fret hand. The most important part of this is the plucking hand though.

2 options. Mount it like the original, cutting away the top of the new box, then just put a piece of painted black wood in the opening.

Or mount it in the opening, and cover the sides of the hole with polished aluminum or painted wood. You could get a clear sticker made, put a new piece of polished aluminum in front of the chassis, then put all the controls through the new piece. If youre good at soldering you can even move the controls off the pcb and mount to a new sheet of metal.

I've been playing guitar for a few years and i'm getting myself a 6-string bass for christmas.
Anything i should keep in mind or any tips for someone who's never touched a bass before?
The main reason i wanted to get one is because i make music on my own and i feel like my songs could really use a bass
>>
>>69603873
yea get a 4 string and learn to play it like a bass, not a baritone guitar
>>
>>69603786
Because the first scale most people learn is a minor pentatonic
>>
>>69603873
I kind of agree with the other anon, but get a 5 string
>>
>>69603889
>>69603952
some high notes are easier to reach on a six string and there are also a bunch of notes more than on a four string.
the only negative thing i got so far is that there isn't that much space between the strings but that doesn't seem like a big deal to me.

>>69604017
other anons are right, if you've had no experience with basses, starting on a 6 string is one of the most stupid choices you can make. The neck is absolutely huge compared to a regular guitar (I think it's about as wide as an 8 string guitar), and more strings on the instrument mean more strings to mute in order to sound good.
The high C is also extremely niche and not very useful in most genres.
Start on a 4, unless you understand how to play on a 5 using its whole range, in which case 5 is fine.
>>
>>69604191
alright thanks
>>
>>69603678
Are you using a fairly heavy string gauge?

If neck is adjusted correctly, press string down hard between nut and first fret, and also right before bridge saddle. If string is sort of curving over these too points it will tend to intonate sharp. By pressing the string you are forming a more defined bend at nut and saddle contact points. Nut slot may also be too shallow and needs to be filed down a bit.

I was joking with the C#.
F# is about 22hz iirc, so it's still "audible", but at that point it's already rather ridiculous. I know Nolly from >periphery sometimes uses one for the songs where they use 8 strings, but at that point it's going to get lost below the kick drum.

Look at Egnater. A used Rebel 20 or 30 head can be found under $500. Not sure what the combo would go for.

Great price for a really nice sounding amp.

it all comes down to personal preference, and it doesn't sound like you have a personal preference. keep playing. figure out what you want to play. go to music shops, try shit and see what you like. figure out what features you need. not "do you like the idea of a tube amp", but "do you like how a tube amp sounds".

keep using what you got for now.

>>
>>69604017
>a bunch more notes
Theres 8, 4 more than a 5 string. The neck is way fuck huge, and uncomfortable to play compared to even a 5 string, and the strings are really close together so if you want to slap its harder than a 4 string or a wide neck 5. If youre dead set at least play a couple first, most bass players dont gain anythi from it aside from not having to change position every so often for a fill. Guys like les claypool and victor wooten can take full advantage of them, but they both play unconventional music.

This isnt us trying to say you couldnt master it, feel comfortable with it, and utilize it to it's full potential, but its a risky buy for someone whos never played one before to buy one sight unseen. Ive been playing bass for several years and own a 6 string, i never play it.
>>

>>
>>69605346
Metal bands didn't leave out the bass in the bass drum, they simply keep boosting the shit out of its topmost frequencies.
It's mostly deathcore/metalcore bands that have this thin sounding bass drum, often because they're using bad triggers or poorly programmed drum machines.
The last Inquisition release's a wonderful example of a good mix for metal.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-OSbdlm_2BY

>>69605481
Les and Wooten both play majorly 4 strings. Les's style of 6 stringed playing isn't exactly common either.

yeah i liked that esp guitars were made "well", ie a lot of guitar for the money compared to gibson. but i specifically went for the one with duncans since the emgs are absolute trash.

i am starting to look into those tele deluxe guitars with the wide range humbuckers, but i am still a long way from needing a new guitar.

even before i got the esp, i would have liked a semi hollow or hollow with duncan 59/59, but my ability is nowhere near being ready for a 335-style guitar.
>>
>>69607655
For metal, a 4x12 cab will just move more air than any 2x12 could, and this gives a really unmistakable bigger low end feel to your tone. I chose the mesa because it had v30s, which apparently make your mids shine and have good bass response. So tl'dr, yeah meme cab. i love it.

I play.
There are very practical reasons to use standard notation, but I'll spell it out or you.
The first advantage is separating of voices, you're playing polyphony and counterpoint. The melody should come out the most, standard notation makes it obvious, tablature does not.
Tablature does not tell you what finger to use where and is a very rigid interpretation because as I'm sure you know, you can play the same notes in multiple places, notation makes it very easy to adjust locations you can play on the fingerboard should it be necessary.

Don't be a fucking dolt, learn it.

Nuts are always held in with one drop or super glue or very little spread of diluted wood glue. It is done this way so the thing isn't fused in and impossible to replace if necessary. Place one drop of super glue on the bottom, put it back in place. Very easy fix.

Yes! I was in the market for a usb audio interface earlier this year that was hassle free and could work with as many devices as possible, including iphone, ipad, and android, as well as mac and PC. There is one and it works a charm: The Shure MVi.

pic related. It has a single combination 1/4" and XLR input and does provice phantom power if you need it. Never any trouble with drivers. Plug in and go.

You only really need to worry about the temperature affecting the tubes if it's like, actually freezing, and the amp is allowed to sit idle for an extended period of time in extreme conditions.

So I want to build an 8 band graphic equalizer. Need some frequency recommendations. I'm thinking two low band freqs, two lower mid freqs, two upper mid freqs, and two high freqs.

Disgusting mustache bridge lol. Awesome SG though. I just can't get past how weird those bridges look. And they're hard to replace what w/ the weird angle that the posts for it go into the guitar. Is that an Atlas cab as well as the Emperor? Also, how in the everloving fuck do you use that Sound Shitty without tearing your domicile down? Must be w/ pedals or a fuckoff huge attenuator?

Very nice setup overall, 9/10, quite gelatinous

Pic is my collection of stuff. Just need folks to play with now, currently a bedroom doom enthusiast, as it were

No, just give it a couple hours to settle at room temp. Usual new guitar setup. Double check all pots, screws, and tuner bolts are tight. Most of that stuff gets loose in transit even in good weather.

Nothing wrong with that. What model? Been looking into getting a Squier or First Act like that one anon w/ the pink one who got it to learn how to do fret work and whatever else. Definitely would like to get to the point where I eventually don't need to go to a luthier for anything but huge structural repairs and the like, maybe even further than that. Isn't a cheap hobby, though, at least w/ the initial tools investment.

What a digression. What kinda amp are you using, anon?
>>
>>69613950
It's an affinity

I want to do the same with my guitar after I buy another guitar as the frets are pretty beat up

I was using the fender 15g amp that came with it for years until it decided to blow the fuse this year

I've resorted to digital effects on my PC in the mean time
>>
>>69614183

Is the fuse on your amp not easily replaced? Can't remember what my old solid state amp was like, but on the tube ones I've got they're all easily accessible. Either way, ya make do with what you've got.

What kind of guitar are you looking to get next?

I replaced the fuse and it made a hum sound then it blew. The input jack used to move around on it so I'm assuming it's either that or another component

I played an SG at the music store and I really liked the wide fret board so I'm pulling towards something like that but with a tremolo bridge on it

Bummer. Maybe replace the jack too? Might as well mess around with it and try to fix it, worth getting a soldering iron for. Then just learn more from there, maybe do some electronics work or replacement on your Squier too.

And SGs are great. Look for a used one with a Bigsby or Gibson vibrato, that'll get the job done. Unless you're talking like Floyd-Rose/Kahler type stuff

Hey /gg/, I haven't touched the guitar in over 6 months and I just got back into it last week. I need new songs to play.

Just finished learning Roundabout and Close to the Edge. I'm looking for something long, fairly complex, but not too shreddy, since shredding is the one thing I suck at.

If anyone could recommend me some nice songs to tackle that'd be great.

Thanks dude. I love the Ibanez, I've never had a neck so thin before and it feels great. The stock pickups are really good too - DiMarzio Tone Zone and Air Norton

>How'd you get beyond the pentatonic scale and into more shreddy type stuff
The first step is to learn and become comfortable with other scale shapes. Minor / harmonic minor and some of their modes covers most of what you'll find in shredding. Practicing the boring, shreddy scale exercises helps build up technique a lot. Start slow with a metronome then little by little work on speeding up your alternate-picking, legato, sweeping, tapping, etc. Once you get comfortable with the movements you can focus on making the notes more interesting than just regurgitating scales up and down. Learning licks and solos here and there from guitarists you like helps a lot, too. I've taken a lot of influence from Ryan Knight

Also improv is important. Improvise a lot

Solid. I'm mostly just looking for exercises at the moment. Got some string skipping ones, of course the chromatic scale for alternate picking, also practicing the major scale for alternate picking. Just gotta find some more applicable scales, will start w/ what you suggested. Currently just a doomfag looking to spice up my own improvisation, then eventually to incorporate more interesting techniques and sounds into what I write. I'm just glad I've finally come around to sitting down with the metronome and practicing, whereas teenage me just wanted to be Jimmy Page lol.

And awesome, glad to hear it's a solid guitar. Looks very pretty, always nice to have looks and playability. Liking the 6505 too? Want to get a higher gain/modern voiced head eventually too, currently considering my options.

Q-Tron for posterity
>>
>>69614906
Not that anon, but I don't know that there's any advantage, necessarily. Just comes down to preference. Some people don't want or need the single coil in the middle, some like it for versatility. Personally think that the H-H looks less wonky
>>
>>69614851
Rock on brother! I am the same I like to play more mellow stuff. I can play other things but it's just something that seems to come out of me more when I play.

I specifically looked for HH because my picking is really aggressive when I riff and the middle pickup would occasionally get in the way when I tried my friend's HSH guitar. Plus I'm happy with the variety I can get with HH switching, I never felt the need for more
>>
>>69614950
Actually thinking about it, with two humbuckers the middle position will be the two humbuckers together right?

With HSH you don't get that, you get either:
First position : humbucker
second position : half humbucker + single coil
third position : single coil
fourth position : half humbucker + single coil
fifth position : humbucker
>>
>>69614975
I think you could probably get crafty with your wiring scheme and components to get all the combinations you wanted, desu. But stock, yeah, you might not have the two humbuckers together. That sound is sort of single coil-ish anyway IMO, so it'd work out with the middle single coil. It really just seems like it comes down to weighing your aesthetic preferences and desired tonal palette
>>
>>69614998
Btw, my guitar is a prestige guitar, but the pickups are actually ibanez pickups

v7 - s1 - v8

I never tried different pickups on my guitar but i never felt like they are bad or something like that, personally. i get great sounds out of it imo
>>
>>69614941
>gotta find some more applicable scales
Check out Phrygian Dominant (a mode of harmonic minor). It's definitely my favorite to noodle in

>Liking the 6505 too?
Absolutely love it. Perfect for gigging and recording. It also has great low/mid-gain tone for more chilled out or proggy rock that most people don't associate with a 6505. Here's an example:
https://clyp.it/vzdqc0d2

And the cleans aren't the best around, but definitely usable:
https://clyp.it/mdqpwhie

Also that Australian anon who used to post more frequently has managed to get ridiculously heavy doom tones from his 6505. So you can still use it for doom stuff as well as modern high gain stuff
