It's the beginning of a new life!

The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

Stan Getz, Dizzy Gillespie & Sonny Stitt - For Musicians Only (1958)
>bebop

An absolutely riotous good time. I've always seen Getz (especially after listening to Getz/Gilberto) as a really subdued, somewhat boring performer, but the addition of Gillespie and Stitt really brings out the energetic side of all of them, making for one of the most purely /fun/ albums I've heard in quite some time. It's Gillespie's album, he plays the hell out of his trumpet, adding obscene amounts of power and commanding the listener's full attention every single time he plays, no matter how insignificant his part may seem. The b-side pales a bit compared to the really wonderful a-side, but wholly it's a really damn fun and enjoyable album.

3.0+

Martin Newell - The Greatest Living Englishman (1993)
>psychedelic pop, pop rock

In retrospect, I like the roughness of the Cleaners From Venus' self-titled, mainly because this is overproduced to a complete fault. It's got a really gross synthesized feel to it, Newell's songwriting style is intrinsically natural and down-to-earth and this production suits it horribly. His songwriting is also a bit less memorable than his prior works, it's really pleasant and serviceable Beatlesque pop with some nice melodies but it's derivative as hell and too damn posh and whimsical. A decent pop album with some glaring issues.

>Jandek - Manhattan Tuesday

The line up for the fifth live release of Corwood Industries is something special. Rep is on 2 synthesisers (!), Loren Connors (!!) on guitar, Matt Heyner on bass, and Chris Corsano on drums! This impressive little line up performs a single piece for one and a half hour entitled “Afternoon of Insensitivity”.

How does this sound? Pretty great if you ask me. Every single member works sublimely on this one. Let’s start from the Rep. He plays 2 synths with organ presets, concentrating on jumping between single keys, going up and down through octaves now and then. Serene in the style of The Cell, but the organ-like sounds are much more interesting to listen to. Especially when you have Loren Connors messing around with a wah pedal and what reminds me of an EHX Small Stone. Bubbly sound of the underwater lies supports this ambient atmosphere from Jandek’s synth lead. In the meantime, Chris Corsano plays some fire fills that are somewhat march-like and bring in a sense of tension and momentum to the ambient world the Rep brings the audience into. In the moments of pause between the guitar and the organ, Matt Heyner either delivers juicy pizzicatos or dissonant legatos. The general sound reminds me of the cinematic indeterminate sensation of some Charles Ives compositions.

This is all supported by Sterling Smith’s recital of a lengthy piece. The topic of boredom is connected to the absence of purpose in life. “We simply manufacture circumstances that create a necessity to do something / Except for the procurement of basic comfort as a human being” says Jandek in his lengthy speech (spoken word with occasional vocalise). He touches upon the sensation of being bored like no other and manages to approach it from every single angle he can. As a person who gets bored a lot, this was very received by me. This is probably Jandek’s most interesting live text so far.

Great recording that is somewhat held back by the length and the occasional feeling of sameness for certain episodes. Definitely recommend this though, wonderful recording.

8+/10

PS: Why the hell did Loren just sit in his sunglasses, not playing anything for the last 20 minutes of the piece? Dude…

seven pines was really nice, but a little longer seeming than I was happy with. I also felt like his compositions are dense, compared to fahey. like silence doesnt play as big a part, which leaves it sounding a little more overbearing than I think suits primitivism. still really nice though, recommended if you enjoy Fahey and/or Basho.

hey, i listened to the thread album!

Khana Rung Thawi - แห่สดดนตรีพื้นบ้านหนองโก ชุดที่ 8 + 9

This album is wild, man. It feels like a drug-fueled trip through South Asian slums with only yourself and a cheap Casio keyboard. It's really entertaining and surprisingly technical, but by the time the second track started I had an actual headache. I don't think this album has really any variety. It's just relentless improv of the same motifs for an hour. Still, the first 20 mins were awesomely strange. Check it out for the fun aspect.

EHH.

Daniel Johnston - Songs of Pain

Heartbreakingly honest and pure. There is something about the mind of the mentally ill that prevents the output of disingenuous music. This album is a window into the mind of someone misunderstood and mistreated. The lo-fi isn't a cheap indie gimmick, and the instrumentation is representative of someone doing all they can to perform. Actually listened to Daniel's music really shows you how misinformed the people calling him "adorable" are. Daniel was a fucked-up, tortured individual, and this album is the perfect way to actually see that. From the pure aspect of enjoyment, I think it's a bit long. Short tracks serve little purpose, but lyrics make up for it.

GOOD.

Van Dyke Parks - Discover America (1972)
>calypso, art pop

The chilled-out, tropical brother of Song Cycle. It's not as unfocused as it's more famous predecessor, and it's not quite as eclectic, but it still follows the same vignette-based style, and it still has problems in its lack of any real resonance and its tendency to occassionally irritate. Parks, despite his obvious gifts as a songwriter and an arranger, is a terrible vocalist (save for the vocals on the opener, which are shockingly wonderful), and I hate the filter he often uses on both this and Song Cycle. Its embrace of calypso also falls into pastiche territory occassionally. It's loving and it's done well, but it's got a really smug, ironic, parodic quality to it that takes away from the music itself. Impossible to deny how pleasant and well-done a lot of this is, though. Steel drums are such a nice instrument to hear, and Parks' blends them and other turn-of-the-century Trinidadian instruments with more modern rock and pop instruments to make a weirdly evocative and pretty album that's marred by a big lack of focus and a tendency to irritate.

End - The Sounds of Disaster (2004)
>breakcore, plunderphonics, electronic

Inventive, that's no lie, and I like the heavy emphasis on breaks, but it's just too goddamn much. It throws so many different genres, styles, and sounds on the listener, but nothing seems like it has any real purpose, it's a load of sounds just to have a load of sounds. This also has some problems with being really irritating at times. It was released on Mike Patton's label, so that shouldn't be a surprise, but some of the samples and the big surf rock influence get really hyperactive and irritating. It's purer breakcore moments are exhilrating and well done, but you've gotta sift through so much irritating stuff to actually get to them.

I like Dan Johnston as much as the next guy (like 'im most of the time) but Songs of Pain to me is just unbearably preachy. I'm usually a huge fan of that kind of off-kilter outsider artist kitsch too, but I could never get behind Songs of Pain specifically. Even in Dan's other works, which are obviously similarly themed, the songs are either mostly more engaging or more story-driven.

Not trying to slam your review btw—it's a perfectly reasonable opinion—just leapfrogging off of it to vent about the album.

i can totally get behind saturation as a stylistic goal, still every track has sort of a main sample or "theme" if you will though, so it doesn't lose itself. that or it's just more my sorta thing in general. and nah the drums were the least nice part, most of the time they just felt like their purpose was to hold it together stylistically, and at others, generic/un-hard-a-f

An individual's (you)s will only increase in value from a decreased supply if that individual has high enough sociomemetic status (SMS) to create a real demand for that individual's (you)s. An individual with low SMS will only see the value of their (you)s decrease from a lower posting frequency. Most people have too low for their posting frequency to really matter, and their (you)s are stuck at close to the baseline (you) value of 1 Anonymous (you) (Ay)

You spend your (you)s much too frivolously and havet too low SMS for them to be very valuable. Your (you)s as a recognizable yet not renowned are at best a little more valuable than 1 Ay.

Nice.

>>69558079
Yes, a new tripfag or namefag who has not acquired any meme capital will have a lower than baserate value on their (you)s.

>>69558097
There are many things influencing one's SMS, including memeducation, meme capital, meme income (memecome) and control over meme production means. Making high quality posts and memes generally improve one's SMS, while low quality posts and stale memes tend to lower it.

Acid Mothers Temple - Crystal Rainbow Pyramid...

Final track is a fantastic time, great variety in composition, but the first two tracks suffer from a lack of direction or thought. Track one is downright boring, despite being so short. Track two is boring as well, but this time it's length is the culprit. The sense of experimentation that comes with most AMT albums just isn't here on those two tracks. Track three is fantastic, so I'm not sure what was going on with the first two. It might just be that AMT needs very long tracks to express what they need to.

EHH.

Boris with Keiji Haino - Black: Implication Flooding

Logically this collaboration would be legendary, but in reality it suffers from lack of direction. It's mostly poor improvisation with some moments where the two acts seem to click. When Keiji and Boris start to work in sync there are some epic moments, particularly in the ending piece, but separated these moments are long stretches of drone fuckery that show how poor Boris was at improv at this point. Seeing this live would be a great experience, but this poor recording stands as a poor piece from two great acts. However, the highs are quite high, so I can't say this is outright bad.

EHH.

>Portishead
Only Third was really any good at all. s/t sucked shit.
5, 3, and 7

>Eleh - Radiant Intervals
Though much better than I originally thought, for a drone album this became very predictable fast. All four tracks are around the same length, with progressions at nearly the same intervals, which makes every following track consistently less enjoyable, though individually they're all fine.
4

>Bark Psychosis - ///Codename: Dustsucker
There's like 8 good post-rock albums ever and this is one of them. "Shapeshifting" in particular is a fantastic track. Some track in the middle are more iffy than others, however, this is pretty much just a well-written pop record. If you enjoy the Talk Talk branch of post-rock to any extent don't pass this up.
7

>Negativland - It's All in Your Head
(after writing this review I saw like two more on RYM that were exactly like this one but I don't really have the energy to redo it so I'm just gonna keep it like this:) When reading up on this album's premise, I thought it was going to be some /r/atheism shit. What I got instead was a pretty bland Negativland record with a lot of thought-provoking tracks. Instead of just being like "religion am gay hurhur" it actually manages to produce some well-organized thoughts about religion as a whole. Could never see me coming back to this, even though it was pretty enjoyable.
6

>Macha & Bedhead - Macha Loved Bedhead
Two bands I've enjoyed in the past (especially Macha) come together to make a pretty decent EP. The Bedhead-influenced spaciousness was more often than not lost on me, especially the 82 five-second tracks of pretty lame ambient, as apposed to Macha's fast-paced, gamelan-influenced indie rock, which I always enjoy. And you can't hate an album like this when it ends with a Cher cover that sounds almost Xiu Xiu-esque. Very enjoyable but unignorably flawed.

>Tim Buckley - Blue Afternoon
I've now decided that I'm going to just finish this dude's whole discog eventually. Everything I've heard from him is so enjoyable, so why not? This album, for example, has very few of the "incredible" moments from Lorca or Starsailor, but fuck is it satisfying.
8

>John Fahey - Requia
Extremely underrated album by this dude imo. While the main guitar-sections are pleasent (as expected) the most interesting parts by far are from the sound-collage "Requiem for Molly" tracks, consisting of almost the entire B-side of the album. Don't pass this one up.
8

>Duster - Rarities
Every song on here involving piano is ten different kinds of okay or mediocre. Really nothing stood out to me from those tracks at all, but this bootleg is worth it just for the more streamline usual Duster moments.
5

>DJ Screw - Chapter 70 - Endonesia
Though not quite as consistently good as All Screwed Up, this has some of his best tracks I've heard so far. Specifically, "One Day", one of the most necessarily strung-out tracks ever, clocking in at 14 minutes. Other stand-outs here are "The Gangsta, The Killa and the Dope Dealer", and "Ghetto Smile"
8

>DJ Shadow & Cut Chemist - Brainfreeze
Though a lot of fantastic plunderphonics moments (takes balls to sample your own album for a DJ mix lol) my question is why release an album that's two tracks of 25 minutes of length but NOT put it on vinyl? Shit makes no sense to me. Great for those that like instrumental hip-hop, I just wish the transitions between tracks were smother and there was less "filler space." If the songs don't transition seamlessly why don't you just make it all separate tracks instead of two-25-minute tracks?

>Roy Montgomery - The Allegory of Hearing
Didn't mind the psych-y, spacious, lo-fi, sound here. In fact, I welcomed it. Any variation between tracks at all would've been very nice though. The drone/psych mix here feels less intense and more just boring in general. 17-minute tracks like this are just as boring and unfufilling as the 2-minute ones.
3

>Teslar Drugs - s/t
Had a lot of enjoyable guitar-work and song progressions, but I almost never thought the songs transitioned from bit-to-bit perfectly. The first song is an excellent example of this. It starts out with a pretty slow guitar balled, which then transforms into a fast-paced, catchy, indie-pop (the rare enjoyable kind) section, then seemingly out of nowhere it throws an angular guitar melody in your face. And the other tracks in some way carry on in this fashion. Though I'm not implying every track is predictable (far from it, actually) I just enjoyed a lot of sections of songs individually and not necessarily as they came together, if that makes any sense. This was interesting enough to make me want to check out their other album, which is apparently more post-punk? *thinking emoji*

Really nice spaced out guitar riffs wound together in with dreamy vocals. The first few tracks are definitely the highlight for me and the whole thing maintains a steady quality throughout. I've been meaning to check it out for a long time. I listened to the Sound of Ceres album Nostalgia for Infinity that came out this year which has the same members as candy claws and enjoyed that quite a bit. I'll give it a listen when i find some time around studying for finals.

long story short, i need 8 people who aren't in the tourney right now (either via elimination or lack of joining in the first place) to enter into a mini tourney. the winner gets an instant spot in the final 3. previously eliminated contestants can enter. i'd prefer if you had a trip or a link to an rym account.

Stereolab - Transient Random-Noise Bursts With Announcements (1993)
>experimental rock, noise pop, art pop

I swear that Yo La Tengo and Stereolab are long lost sister bands. One of my favorite aspects of I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One, an album I adore, is how it very subtly takes influence from krautrock, using the motorik beat and often using guitars for soundscaping. However, YLT also focused a lot more on traditional indie rock/pop songs, something Stereolab attempts on this album. Stereolab has the krautrock down to a science, the 18-minute "Jenny Ondioline" is the perfect spiritual successor to "Hallogallo", quitetly mutilating and shifting throughout it's runtime while never losing track of the driving, pulsing, amazing motorik beat. Other tracks that follow suit, melding krautrock with more modern shoegaze/post-rock styles, are wonderful as well, but the album drops in quality when they adopt a more typical "indie" sound. They're all good pop songwriters, but their sound loses a lot of memorability in this style. Still, very good.

3.0+

Sandy Bull - Inventions (1965)
>american primitivism

Step down from his debut. "Blend 2" is a worthy successor to the original "Blend", bringing back Billy Higgins to play possibly the most hypnotic drum beat ever recorded, but the rest often devolves into pure wank territory. The throwaway tracks on Inventions were simple yet enjoyable primitivism ditties. He experiments a lot more here, and the products aren't all too great. "Memphis, Tennessee" is possibly the most out of left-field cover in existence, and it is pretty cool, arguably being the most full-sounding track on the album, but the shorter tracks are unmemorable and "Manha de Carnival" is overlong and self-indulgent. Bull's great, but he kinda missed the mark here.

MIJ - Color by the Number (1969)
>psychedelic folk, yodeling

Really raw, gritty psych folk in the same vein as Mark Fry or Simon Finn. The "yodeling" tag is misleading, MIJ is a vocal acrobat but he screams and yells a lot more than he yodels. His basic singing voice is nasally and frankly a bit irritating, but when he ramps up the aggression and power in his voice he's awesome. These louder vocal performances are oftened paired with some really wonderful psych folk instrumentals. Most of the guitar tracks are really similar and most tracks have the same kind of vibe to them, but it's a wonderfully consistent album with a great sound. It's melodic and flouncy while still retaining a certain edge and anxiety to it, traits that the vocals add a lot to. Came into this for the yodeling tag, left with a great, albeit standard, psych folk album.

Only have time for a quick update, but I should be able to get through a chunk of it tomorrow.

>Joanna Newsom - Joanna Newsom & The Ys Street Band E.P.
Would have been mediocre if not for performing my favorite song from Ys in an interesting new light.
I really loved the extended outro, it was very meditative.
Otherwise, Colleen is a unique Irish riverdance number packaged with an interesting story told through lyrics, but still sounds like a B-side at the end of the day.
And Clam, Crab, Cockle, Cowrie is quite a forgettable song with an awful duo vocalist that I can't stand. Note that I haven't yet heard the original version, but I doubt that would make much of a difference.

Thinking Fellers Union Local 282 - Admonishing the Bishops (1993)
>noise rock, experimental rock

The Fellers at their prettiest and most subdued. They lose a /lot/ of character here, but they make up for it with their songwriting prowess and just a whole load of comfiness. I'll have to agree with the RYM track rating consensus and say that "Hurricane" and "Million Dollars" are the best tracks here. "Hurricane" is just flat-out pretty, something I never thought I'd say about a Fellers song, and the guitar climax on "Million Dollars" is one of the band's finest individual moments. The other two tracks, while nice, are unmemorable and lacking in personality, which is probably the greatest thing about this band. Despite it's status as the only bold release they have on RYM, this might be one of my least favorite Fellers records. And if an EP this good is one of my least favorite releases by a band, you know the band is pretty damn amazing.

Should be about the same with the right set-up, which he probably doesn't have, but still
>>
>>69575351
No, it literally is, without a single doubt, worse. Even with the absolute best equipment on earth you won't get the same dynamic range or frequency range.

Digital is superior in every single way except for "le hipster cred", but vinyls aren't even cool any more so you don't even have that. Go collect 8-tracks or something instead, same shit.
>>
>>69575361
>you won't get the same dynamic range or frequency range.
