It's the 2nd of October

"The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time."

Crate digging is about the farthest I'll go too. There is still a good amount of music that hasn't been transcribed and uploaded.

This 60's record I found at a Goodwill didn't even have a picture online, so i (very badly) tried to scan it myself. On top of that it is some of the nicest panned organ/piano compositions I have ever listened to. Even then, once the process is done I'd still rather listen to it on mp3.

Still need to check out that new Contortions record; thought it was going to be a Pop Group-tier meme but I guess people are enjoying it.
You know it's a mediocre year for music when most of the best albums are from artists decades past their time. I bet there's a whole slew of bandcamp-esque releases that will be touted as revolutionary in 30 years' time, but I haven't the patience to sift through that crap chute. :^)

Hell, in Canada here Prettyboy Trudeau basically threw out his promise of electoral reform because it won him a majority government with less than 40% of the vote.
Apparently now that he won, the system 'works for Canadians' so it's no longer an issue.

Sick job attacking a point I wasn't making.
My point is people are only pro-electoral reform when it stands to benefit their guy. Everyone yammering about the popular vote is just butthurt their guy didn't win, and want to count votes such that they do.
They're sure aren't a lot of Trump supporters that are in favour of the popular vote, or Clinton supporters that love the electoral college. It's not about upholding democracy, it's about ensuring their guy wins.

Oneohtrix Point Never - Replica (thomas), 7-
I guess I somewhat like OPN in general. This one in particular has great soundscapes, it's well made. I guess it's not something that touched me personally, but I appreciated the work on this thing.

John Coltrane - Olé Coltrane (s), 8+
It's quite amazing, I guess I might like it more than "A Love Supreme". The latter was the one that required at least several listens to appreciate, while this one clicked immediately and maybe it doesn't mean it's better, I liked it about the piece.
p.s. sorry for invisible red font

The Velvet Underground - A Symphony Of Sound (Darklands), 6~
A long guitar noise improvisation record. I have read of issues concerning this release, several different versions of it existing etc, so I am judging the version I heard, which was three 18 min long tracks. I don't know, I guess it was a pleasant enough listen, but hardly holding a lot of significance to me. I might get back to it if I want some background music though.

You don't have a point. Most organisations advocating electoral reform are pushing for creating a multi-party system that proportionately represents all voters, not just for switching to popular vote with no further changes. The electoral system in the US is a problem for a lot more people than the retarded millenials crying over Clinton losing or the equally retarded millenials who would be crying if she won.

Washed Out - High Times
Sometimes it was even kind of an okay, some interesting samples here and there, but in general it sounds like a bunch of sketches, not quite significant on its own. It's very raw and could do a lot of work. And I am not a fan of vocals, to be quite honest.

Zeitgeber - Zeitgeber
A more minimalistic version of Lucy, a very similar polished production. I guess I prefer Lucy material over this, although the end of the album has some interesting moments.

ゆらゆら帝国 - 空洞です (Kūdō desu) (2007)
>psychedelic pop, psychedelic rock

Listening to this after Stereolab was a very good idea, they're both very similar in sound and how they reappropriate krautrock in a very modern indie context. Whereas Stereolab take a more soundscape-based route, YYT embrace the groove, and embrace it really well. A bit too much smooth jazz influence, and some sterile, brief pop tracks take away from the longform grooves they've got going on, yet the album is never really hurt /that/ much by the presence of these elements. It's got a consistent sound but enough of an experimental edge to stay interesting for 50 minutes, and it's just fun to listen to. More inventive than frontman Sakamoto's debut solo album, and just as enjoyable.

Acid Rap was a letdown. I really love coloring book, but this just felt like a stepping stone to that, and putting this on is like taking a step backward.
I also really love those weird little "EUAGH" yelps chance does, but it's ridiculous how overdone it is on Acid Rap. it's insane. it's not even funny.

Parenthetical Girls - Safe as Houses (2006)
>art pop, indie pop

More unfocused and unsettling than it's beautiful follow-up, I never thought /that/ fucking cover art could describe the music perfectly, but it really does. It's weirdly uncanny in a way, it's very poppy and light but something seems very off and uncomfortable about it. It's a very sombre album lyrically, which contrasts a lot with the upbeatness of the music. The music switches a lot between Dirty Projectors/Fiery Furnaces-esque indie pop and gorgeous chamber pop, and good lord it does the latter so much better. I don't care for the former style to begin with, but certain artists can take on the hyperactive style well, which is something that doesn't suit Pennington and co.'s style of songwriting or Pennington's fragile vocals. The subdued, chambery tracks are on par with Entaglements, always a joy to listen to. Not an amazing album, but it's good enough to cement PG's status as one of the most underrated "indie" bands of the 2000s.

Whitney - Light Upon the Lake (2016)
>indie rock, indie folk

I'm so sick of these retro '60s acts that do absolutely nothing new or nothing to expand upon the sounds their so obviously ripping-off getting so much praise and attention. There is nothing fundamentally wrong with this album, it's done well, it's produced well, I even like the vocals. It's just absolutely fucking pointless. I guess it's worth a listen once for the decent bookend tracks, but this is probably the most pointless, worthless album I've heard in quite some time. It's so faceless and generic, most tracks sound the same and the album sounds the same as about 8000 albums before it, retro or not. Trust me, an album exactly like this is gonna come out next year and get the same amount of praise, it's an endless cycle of listenable, generic, insipid music.

Werewolf Jerusalem - God Has Shot Himself (2003)
>harsh noise

Good noise needs to evoke a physical reaction in the listener. The noise that makes me feel like my head is being crushed in a vice is by far the best noise, and I'll be damned if I didn't feel suffocated listening to this. Definitely an inherent, kinda embarassing edginess to it (just look at the album title), and the more chaotic, HNW segments aren't my thing, but you'll be hard-pressed to find a more varied, creative, evocative noise album. And it's only half an hour, so it never gets old!

Been working through this. Want to listen to each album a number of times and am going to try and write longer reviews for each one, but some quick thoughts after first listens:

>Nicolas Collins - A Dark and Stormy Night
The poem on this is fucking great, but the first few shorter tracks feel redundant.

>Wovenhand - Blush Music
Beautiful atmosphere, vocals fall short in some parts (but may just need more listens).

>Danny Brown - Atrocity Exhibition
Great vibe, puts a smile on my face. Has a few shortcomings I haven't really pinpointed yet.

>Sam Rivers - Dimensions & Extensions
Great "jazz", pieces flow well, the first track is a bit weak.

>Thelonious Monk - Underground
This may be my favourite album cover ever. It also may be my favourite Monk so far, but I'll definitely need a few more listens to make that kind of statement.

>The Fiery Furnaces - Bitter Tea
Too quirky for me, but the songwriting is solid and it does work quite well as a whole.

Teen Daze - My Bedroom Floor
Couldn't help but think it's cheesy and empty. It's not made very well too. Had couple of "okay" tracks like idk, "I Need to Get the Power Man for Jimmy" and "Let's Rock This Dagobah System" maybe, yet still it's mostly raw okay leitmotif without anything.

Harmonious Thelonious - Santos
Interesting, but waaaay too repetitive in the beginning and kinda dry at times. Too bad, cause the approach is peculiar.

Your best bet would be to check out Yat-Kha's other albums, though Albert Kuvezin isn't one to stick to one sound for too long. Their first two albums are weird New Age stuff, Dalai Beldiri is close to Yenisei-Punk but has a heavier droning folk sound, Aldyn Dashka is a return to a more rock sound, Tuva.Rock is apparently metal, Re-Covers is covers of famous western songs, and Poets and Lighthouses is apparently post-punk influenced. Their live albums are also supposedly really good but I haven't checked them out.

Other things of interest:

>Sainkho Namtchylak mixes throat singing with various avant-garde genres as well as more generic electronic ones
>Olga Podluzhnaya mixes New Age, Tuvan Throat Singing, and Sakha Steppe Music - she's better known as an expert jaw harpist though
>Hartyga mixes Tuvan Throat Singing, Tuvan instruments, jazz rock, and psychedelic rock together
>Oidupaa Vladimir Oiun (a famous avant-meme) was a protester who made up his own style of singing to accompany a prison accordion

There was also the composer Rastislav Dokur-oolovich who apparently mixed modern classical with Tuvan traditional instruments but it's near impossible to find anything on him

I really need to check out dialoghi del presente, I really like the idea of it and the cover reminds me of Visions of the Country which already sells me on it.
Btw I expected ol' tickley to be higher, idk how to think about this pigger
>>
>>69603318
Buckley is my favourite artist, but every album he did is flawed in some way.
Starsailor is a 5/5 almost as a formality, because it contains two of my favourite song ever, but I don't think it's a perfect album.

Definitely do Dialoghi (extended version if you dig it is essential, the original Della Conoscenza is better and my fav piece of music ever)!!!!!!

Thats a very good respectable opinion i like a lot since it's the same one I hold
Ill check out Dialoghi as soon as the exam session buttfucking ends

thoughts on nokturnal mortum?
do you know of more folk metal like it?
>>

Never tried them cause I avoided ns stuff like the plague when I knew about it.
>>
>>69603787
meh, I was already into them when I found out their ideology
anyway I still listen to them, their politics are a bummer but I enjoy the music

I feel ya m8, currently studying my ass off.
Consider that minimalism is good for studying tho :^)
>>
>>69603776
Nokturnal Mortum is great. More black/folk metal bands similar are Drudkh, Ygg, Kroda, and Khors

They're not ns anymore, they renounced their ideologies a while ago, and their recent works have been masterpieces. Even when they were ns however, they were a great band musically. Ns is nothing to avoid, sure the politics and shit is gay, but the music tends to be great
>>
>>69603906
I'm aware of that but I'd rather avoid the whole thing anyway

wow you people have horrible opinions
>>
>>69604209
i like all their albums (including Folkfuck Folie) a lot. but i prefer the ones with a less "traditional" BM sound and an extra dose of insanity
the Ballade/L'ordure/Peste Noire "trilogy" is my favorite
with the newest album though, i couldn't help but notice that their formula is growing a bit stale

haha WOW
it's M3LL155X > EP2 > LP1 > EP1...
>>
>>69604309
Me, I prefer la sanie because Famine's vocals are amazing there and I really don't mind more traditional black metal if it's executed so well. Ballade is nice too and I guess if it had some more material rather than a bunch of short tracks it could be my favorite. On the other hand, L'Ordure is sometimes a bit too much, a bit too tiring, so it doesn't get as much rotation. But it's still great nonetheless.
>>
>>69604515
*meant 2 but they're pretty close
Is there a new FKA release soon that you know of? Seems weird to drop a EP and take more than a year off..

uh she released a single Good to Love (not my favourite) but that was like March or sth, so absolutely no idea desu
