Anyone know how to get a "smooth" gain tone? Something like Buckethead during his Guns N Roses days? Dialling the tone to 0 on the neck pickup seems to come close, but the amp I use is a Marshall Silver Jubilee, so the gain is still "rough" like Slash's tone. Do I need a tubescreamer/compressor/sustain pedal or something?

If that blows your mind try selecting your bridge pick up, pressing down between your last fret and your neck pick up, and then plucking. Works best on the high e if you have metal pick up covers. Or capo as high as you can, mic the fretboard, then try to play something behind the capo, you get really word percussive yet tonal sounds.

Who would have expected that? Kinda surprised actually, since you always complain that no one likes you that you so quickly dismiss someone who's actually trying to have a discussion with you.
>>
>>69434953
1. I was not condescending, i was merely being honest and said something did not "blow my mind". how the hell is that condescending?

2. not only that i did not complain about it, I never even claimed that no one likes me, since there are a fair share of people who do like me. what i did criticize, is that some people tend to harass me on this site. there is a pretty big difference between saying "some people harass me" and "no one likes me". so really, your entire argument is based on something i did not even say. that's called a straw-man fallacy

3. If you feel like i dismissed you, the problem is on your side, not mine, since nothing i said was dismissive of you.

>>69435494
If you can find a nut that fits, have access to some files, and know how to measure it's not too hard. Does it sound tinny with an f major chord?
>>
>>69435538
I have seen prefitted ones that fit my Strat that need a flat nut. It's mostly the G string open but found some spots around the 8th fret and 15th on the heavy E string.

It was fine before I lowered the action since everything above the 12th was a mile high which then left the first four frets too low for me. Truss rod is fine and intonation is good too.

>From what i have heard in the video, i wouldn't be able to distinguish between them based on sound alone

Without getting too drawn into this shit slinging contest, it isn't surprising they both sound really good though a very expensive boutique valve amplifier. I wish I had upgraded my amp before upgrading my guitars, makes a massive difference and pretty much anything will sound good through a properly good amplifier.

Epiphone make really good guitars, have owned a couple. The electrics are shit, but easily replaced. Only played an Epi SG once, I remember they are really unbalanced (headstock heavy) and the Gibsons aren't, maybe they have upped their game recently but I am surprised they didn't pick up on that.
>>
>>69438886
The 12th fret harmonic will always be the same as the open string, it'll always be in the middle of the string even if your intonation is horrible. You have to check the Harmonic to the fretted note.
>>
>>69439533
Through an expensive amplifier you should hear MORE of the guitar, not less.

But they used the dirt channel, so i guess it would be very fair to say it makes them much harder to distinguish.
>>
>>69439447
It's really good. Not quite as good as the Heritage, not that should it be but it's still a really good guitar. It has a really good rhythm tone but it doesn't quite 'sing' as much for leads.

Mine is from 2008 though so it might be a bit different.
>>
>>69439494
how long have you been playing?
>>
>>69439582
9 years.
>>
>>69439246
If the epiphone came with Gibson pickups of course they sound the same, an HH Squier strat would sound like that if it had that wiring.
>>
>>69439571

What amp are you playing it though? Good info, thanks anon.

Also how big is the neck on it? My LP has a 50s neck and I love it, I have heard SGs usually have quite chunky necks?
>>
>>69439246
>They ended up differentiating them using the smell of the guitar and whether the neck had nitro/poly finish.

But they both clearly said the Gibson played better and sounded better?

Even listening to it through youtube you can hear the Gibson has more clarity and more of a bite to it. Epiphone sounded great too, to be fair, but it isn't as simple as you are making out.
>>
>>69439626
I mostly use amp sims like Amplitube 4 these days. I like how I can instantly record anything and change to a completely different tone in seconds.

The neck is fairly chunky, though I'd say it's probably thinner than the 50s LP neck. My Heritage has a much thicker neck, the SG feels like a shredder neck in comparison.
>>
Anybody have any experience with cheaper end Warwick basses? Got a budget of around £500
>>
>>69439645
At the video, they needed to feel the material of the neck finish and smell the guitar to differentiate the two SG's.
>>
>>69439650
Honestly I do this now, but I take a clean signal as well as an altered one so if I decide to keep the take during mix down I can reamp so i can pick and adjust the amp for the track.

I'm still on on amplitube 3, but I only use that for bass and some clean tones. I use guitar rig for weird effects, revalver for distortion rhythm, waves gtr for distorted leads, and sometimes I use bias but I don't like that one so much.
>>

Same, I just run it as a VST in reaper.

You should "get" 4 though, it sounds a lot better than 3. I almost use it exclusively nowadays though GR3 does have much cooler delays, reverbs and some other effects. Sometimes I will run it with just delays or whatever after amplitube 4.

S-Gear is another good one, though you can't "get" it because of DRM, but they do have like a 30 day trial. Bias is shit.

Some other good ones I've found are a JCM-900 VST with a really plain interface, but it sounds pretty good. Also those lepou ones with custom IRs. Even amplitube 4 with custom IRs sounds pretty good.

I have a huge IR collection. Like 600mb with 10,000+ IRs. Feel like I should upload it somewhere for /gg/.

Yo guys electric guitar noob here I have a few questions

What differentiates an expensive guitar from a cheaper knockoff? I.e. fender vs squier

What "makes" the sound of the electric guitar? Anything besides the pickups?

What are some essential skills you need to have to jam with other people and not embarrass yourself?
>>
>>69440549
>What differentiates an expensive guitar from a cheaper knockoff? I.e. fender vs squier
Generally, more expensive guitars play better and sound better. This can be due to better quality hardware, better manufacturing, different manufacturing techniques (e.g. rolled fretboard edges) and better electronics. More expensive isn't always better obviously, but I am speaking generally.
>What "makes" the sound of the electric guitar? Anything besides the pickups?
The jury is out on this one. Most people won't doubt that the pickups and saddle material influence tone (e.g. brass on telecasters), but whether different kinds of wood or construction affects it is a minefield. I personally think it does make a difference, if you stick the pickups from a Les Paul into a Tele and vice versa they won't sound like the originals. Realistically, find a guitar you like playing and spend time with amps and pedals to get the sound you want.
>What are some essential skills you need to have to jam with other people and not embarrass yourself?
It is better to play simple stuff well and in time / key than to try to push yourself with fancy stuff that is easier to fuck up. Know your limits, and watch other players. Personally my playing advanced much quicker when I started playing with other people.
>>
>>69440637
>if you stick the pickups from a Les Paul into a Tele and vice versa they won't sound like the originals.
A tele's 25.5" and a les paul is 24.75", regardless of the wood, they can't sound the same
>>
>finally understand the technique behind some part of a song
>have to discard months of work and start from scratch again
Is there a worst feeling in playing guitar ?
>>
>>69440549
>What "makes" the sound of the electric guitar? Anything besides the pickups?

disregarding amps and pedals, the nut and saddles make a difference in how it sounds. for electric guitars the type of wood the guitar is made out of doesn't really matter, don't fall for the wood meme. wood matters for acoustic guitars and maybe semi-hollow, for electric it doesn't do jack shit.

What are some essential skills you need to have to jam with other people and not embarrass yourself?
the biggest one is keeping time. if your timing and rhythm is all over the place it doesn't matter what you play. other than that idk, it depends on who you play with and what type of music you're playing
>>
>>69440549
>What are some essential skills you need to have to jam with other people and not embarrass yourself?

Scales and key relativity knowledge
>>
>>69440637
Thanks for that. I remember reading about an olden-time guitar guru demonstrating that only the material of the top mattered for acoustic guitars when considering the quality of the sound. He did this by making a paper maché guitar body with a regular material for the top. I would be surprised if the material of the wood played even a marginal role for the sound of an electric guitar, but what do I know.

Slighty wrong phrasing, but if you learn relativity depending on what key you're bandmates are playing in you simply need to adjust scale fingering accordingly.
>>
>>69440790
That happened a lot for me during my first years but it hasn't happened in months now, even maybe a whole year.
Don't ask me how though, I have no idea why that doesn't happen anymore. Maybe it's because I've learned more about theory in general ?

>>69440805
I never got that mindset, if I listen to someone good, I'm inspired, I know you can push the boundaries that far and I'm telling myself that I still can improve, it's a great feeling.
>>
>>69440808
>key relativity

he's talking about key signatures and knowing how chord progressions work in certain keys and which scales fit inside them

go read guthrie govans first book in the OP, it covers most of this stuff

theoretical and skilled musicianship at its finest, don't feel like any amount of practice can reach those heights
>>
>>69440846
>>69440875
Thanks boys. The extent of my music theory knowledge is that chords of a key are made using n, n+2, n+4 and applying the modifiers to each note according to the modifiers found in the scale. Is that what you basicallly mean, or does it get deeper than that? Sorry if my weird description doesnt make sense.

Example of what i mean,
n = a,
key = c
=> a, c, e
C has no modifiers
=> a, c, e

I already got the E minor pentatonic thing going on. I'm just having trouble with the phrasing. When I play his lines it sounds great, but then when I try to make my own lines and licks it kinda sounds like shit.

there's no secret to phrasing. it's just a matter of practicing until your phrasing sounds 'natural'.

Minor thing to consider is whether your model has a pickup in a suitable place to rest your thumb. It's not a bad habit per-say but make sure to shake things up and practice resting on the E instead occasionally, can be quite jarring if you're used to it and are suddenly expected to play a different bass without one

Good luck m8, long time drummer too who picked up bass in college

I'm on both ends of the spectrum on that, if I want to meticulously torture myself and pinpoint every note I'll try to learn some dank surf rock. If I just feel like getting up and playing I'll put some modern garage rock on my PA, crank my amp, slam the Fuzz and strum away. I usually can tel the all the chords and little riffs by 1-2 listens.

Any gigs this weekend, anons?

Played last night without a lead guitarist. Was actually pretty fun. Played lead bass and the crowd was pretty receptive. Got paid more than usual, too, since the guitarist wasn't there.

Picked up another gig for tonight with one of the area's best drummers in a funky pop/soul trio. Super stoked.

Love bass and drum power duos. There are a lot of fantastic ones out there. Do you remember the name of the group you saw?

Our guitarist in the military and had drill scheduled at 6AM the next morning. Our gig ended at 1 and he really didn't want to go to drill on a few hours of sleep for the third time in the last month, so he asked for some relief.

We managed surprisingly well without him. I can cover a lot of ground playing "lead" bass and it definitely gave the crowd something more unconventional yet equally entertaining to watch/listen to.

Begginer here, on an electric guitar is my right arm supposed to sit on the body of the guitar? I see many players that play with their arm kinda hovering

Are these any good im in the market for a mutiFX pedal.

Been playing ten years but not a big tone freak.
>>
These are my two guitars, I'm a total beginner, only have like 4 or 5 months of practice (about an hour a day average)

The dobro is awesome, sounds great, easy to play, no complaints.

The Stagg is super buzzy. It's a cheap guitar, I got it for 120 bucks, I had a setup done on it for like another 80. So I'm 200 deep and still not a huge fan. Looking for something a little nicer to step up to but don't wan't to break the bank too much until I understand what I'm looking for in a guitar for myself. What's a nice well rounded, decently cheap electric guitar?

Bass guitarist here. Been playing for 10 years ish and looking at moving from 5 string to 6 string.

Also thinking of moving to fretless but watching videos of people play them, I've noticed some people get this weird 'ow', envelope-y sound on every note.

Is that just because they have poor intonation or does everything sound like that on a fretless?

Nice steel.

Avoided buying one myself for years thinking I'll just get bored of it.

that 'ow' or 'mwah' sound is pretty characteristic of a fretless
you can emphasize that sound by sliding into notes
>>
>>69446904
this is a fretless bass

It really carries it's sound compared to a standard acoustic. If you're not bored with an acoustic I'd see no reason why you'd get bored of one of these!

I fucken love the thing. My brother in law has a couple of acoustics, and out of all of them this is by far my favorite. I've had it for years and years but never actively started practicing till recently.

pls help it feels really awkward to play on an electric after playing on an acoustic

no more like near the elbow (pic related)
it gets really uncomfortable after like 10 minutes

Are Squier Telecaster's any good? They're affordable and seem to be well made.
>>
Does anyone here own a Fulltone Bassdrive? If so, how are they?
>>
>>69447421
If that's you, going from an acoustic to a strat is a tough transition. Just do whatever is comfortable for you

Hey guys i have an old fuzz pedal that crapped out on me the signal goes through but with no distortion. Any guesses as to what the problem is?
>>

not him but pacificas always felt super awkward and clunky to me
so if anyone's considering buying one try it out first
lots of people like em but it's not a guitar for everybody
>>
>>69447878
short on the switch maybe?
>>
>>69447878
The 9 volt connector is looking kind of loose on it btw is there any chance that might be the culprit here? Don't wanna spend any money if resoldering 1 connection is what it's going to take.

do you have a soldering iron at home?
I'd def try resoldering the connections before giving it to some shop to repair

hard to troubleshoot like this, it also depends on the layout if the fuzz could technically output a clean signal even without power
>>
>>69447985

I am that guy, what is awkward and clunky about them to you? I'm still trying to like... quantify what it preferences people tend to have about guitars so I can better figure out what it is about my Stagg I'm so frustrated with, cause it isn't just the buzzing. It just feels like a total asshole to play.
>>
been playing for over ten years
owned over 20 guitars from ones that were $300 to ones that were $3200
I've never had a guitar thats stayed in tune for more than 5 fucking notes

Ive paid for prosetups
I've bought bone nuts, graphite nuts, snake oil bullshit nut lube, all manner of string gauges

FUCK GUITARS
So fucking mad right now all three of my guitars are not staying in tune for more than 2 fucking seconds
I want to fucking smash them
>>
Who /musicman/ here?
>>
>>69448157
I'll bring it to my friend who has an iron at home. Now that I'm looking at it carefully the end of the 9 volt connector is frayed so I'm hoping fixing that will fix the pedal.

> It just feels like a total asshole to play.
I totally know what you mean but can't put it in words either

I fucked around with acoustic guitars for a while and then went to a shop to get my first electric

I picked up a few and some just felt right to me (squier strat as an example)
The pacifica was the total opposite for me, it felt heavy (don't know how heavy it actually is) and the way it fit my body was also uncomfortable
>>
>>69448199
Maybe you're putting the strings wrong or your technique is shit? My shit Johnson acoustic guitar stays in tune even if i leave it for days in its case. Even my fucking Epiphone LP stays in tune pretty decently

>>
Do you guys notice your guitar stays in tune much better with fresh strings?

My guitars always start sounding like shit and its impossible to get the note where its supposed to be after about 3 weeks, it always sounds flat or sharp no matter what I do

this corrects when I put new strings on, I stretch them and they are really stable by the next day and keep that way for about 2-3 weeks and then I start having tuning problems again

I play about 1-3 hours a day.
>>
>>69448264
Dunno, I got really into travis and finger style lately and never do any bending really, I think I have a pretty light touch.
>>
>>69448199
what helped my fender:
>new nut
>ugraded tuners (some kind of locking tuners)
>hardtailed it
>tune it after playing it for a few minutes so the strings get a tiny bit warmer

could it maybe be a temperature thing for you?

>>69448311
well if you're talking about acoustics i don't know either
>>
>>69448311
Well at this point it can't be your gear's fault can it?
>>
>>69448292
I tune mine everyday
>>
>>69448199
Do you always tune upwards? I sometimes forget even after all these years
>>
Anyone here have a Darkglass B7K Ultra?

If so, what do you think?

Is the signature sound easy enough to recreate with plugins, or should I just fork out the money for it as my first bass pedal?
>>
How's the quality of Fender Japan? Specifically the 1969 Reissued Mustangs? I kinda really want to buy one for reasons I'll get bullied for mentioning.

Gimmeh songs that sound nice with just acoustic guitar + whistling

nah electric
no acoustic
I did buy a parlor guitar yesterday though thats in the mail

>>69448368
i don't know

maybe my ears are autistic

>>69448418
yeah

I detune the string to get rid of the tension and then tune it bringing it up to pitch
>>
>>69448587
It's about as good as you can get

I do live in northern new england and the humidity and temp changes drastically everyday, even in the room where I have my gear (gets a bit colder at night but the humidity probably changes quite a bit)
>>
i'm looking at a MIJ contemporary strat
i asked the seller what body the wood is though i think it's basswood
anyone own any basswood strats before? do they sound different than alder or ash? which one is better?
is muh tonewoods a hoax? any other reason not to get a basswood guitar then, like the wood being more soft and easy to damage?
>>
>>69448199
locking tuners and use man gauge strings
>>
>>69448687
>>69448617
Well that's reassuring.
>looking at used ones on Reverb

>>
>>69448199
I've never heard of that, that's gotta be such a pain. I've owned several cheap guitars that stayed in tune. I haven't had an issue with tuning stability since I was 17, but I still had to tune after 3 or so songs. I didn't get my first nice guitar til I was 21, and since then I maybe tune once a set, I made it through a 3 set night once without needing to tune anything but the b string twice.

Do you live in Antarctica and go from inside to out while playing? Or do you prefer licensed floyd rose to original? Or do you strum as hard as you split logs?

Joking aside, don't have too much pride to think you don't know how to string a guitar. People go for decades with bad technique, this is no different, and I have known experienced players that do ot wrong, 1 guy who came through to record a demo put his strings on the outside of the tuning peg on a 3+3 because he didn't have a tech around when he wasn't on tour.

And always tune below pitch then tune up.

I'm not trying to troll or talk shit, but it's gotta be something you're doing or the environments you're in doing it. I hope you figure it out bro.

is k-on any good.
is there a condense video where i can watch only the music scenes
>>

Back in the day guitars were considered a meme so people treated them like memes.
Nowadays that music itself has become a meme, meme instruments are offensive.
>>
>>69448763
It's a lot of Cute Girls Doing Cute things but the songs are pretty good, the animation quality is nice, and I thoroughly enjoy it. As for the music parts I haven't actually had any luck finding videos of them.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Og1TX6NwE8
That's all I could find after looking. There's always the ED's that are more like music videos than anything else.
>>
>>69448763
it's pointless if you're going to watch it like that you need to appreciate all of it
>>
How do people break bass strings?

Admittedly I only slap to mess around, but I play predominantly with a pick and have never broken one in over a decade. Even fucking around in high tunings, those things are robust as hell.
