Thoughts on mayones guitars?
>>
>>69412675
I'm so weirded out right now. In my head I absolutely know that making an electric solidbody guitar is incredibly simple and cheap. I also know that I can buy a Harley Benton Jazz Bass, replace the pickups and do some fretwork to have a legitimately good instrument at a really low price. I'm also digging the idea of a parts guitar, etc.
Yet I'm buying pretty expensive (1500-2000) instruments and don't feel bad about it.

You prefer the convenience over the effort of thriftiness. This is the reason people are poor.
>>
>>69412675
Guitar is poor man's violin.
If you choose to play it retune it to violin tuning or you might as well do something else.
>>
>>69412813
>This is the reason people are poor.
I'm not poor. Anyway, I think it has something to do with the fact that I can appreciate a properly built instrument as one cohesive thing.
>>
>>69412849
I didn't say you were poor.

>I can appreciate a properly built instrument as one cohesive thing.

Yet you can't appreciate the rise to such a status as much. If it's as cheap as you say, you could have an even greater guitar if you spent a parcel of time and money on it.

To each their own, I suppose. No harm done to anyone.
>>
>>69412911
>Yet you can't appreciate the rise to such a status as much. If it's as cheap as you say, you could have an even greater guitar if you spent a parcel of time and money on it.
I'm not missing anything on my current instruments, great ergonomics, great fretwork, awesome pickups, etc. I'm not sure what an "even greater" guitar would be. I could save money and achieve the same thing, but it'd never be quite as polished and nice as the instruments I already have. And I guess I'm okay with spending a huge premium for that.
As I said, it's confusing to me as well.

The world may never know.

The Regius and Setius series are improved versions of the Ibanez RG and S series respectively, it's probably no wonder that they have the same initials. It's kinda funny that the latest Iron Label models are copying them back as a poor man's equivalent.
>>

I hate my local used market. MiM Fenders for 400-500€.... At least I can sell my used stuff for fairly decent prices, but it always takes ages.

Anyone here know of a way to identify pickups without having to pry them out of your guitar?

Anyone here who knows their pickus?

Anyone knows what these are?

Bought the guitar used a while back, and they don't look like the original ones on this model.

They are passive.

Thank you

They're clearly not. They just use 2 blades per coil.
And quadbuckers are a thing on bass.

As much as I agree with your reasoning, I think for luxury and distractions, it's fine to spend a little more.

depends on the person. you will get better if you keep doing it, regardless of what it is.

God damn I want a baritone guitar bad but I'm wary of the cheap ones (below 500€ new) and don't want to blow 1k+ on a guitar. No used ones to be found anywhere.
Is the Ibanez RGIB6 decent? Shitty pickups aren't a problem, I can change that. It just needs to stay in tune when I do vibrato all day (no whammy bar, just normal bends etc).
>>
>>69413814
Looks like them

Thanks.

Thinking of having them swapped out.
>>

Do they sound bad? All the dragonfire stuff I've tried has actually been pretty decent, comparable to Seymour Duncan/Dimarzio stuff.
>>

No not bad necesarily, but the output is a bit low.
Maybe what i have are fakes of some sort?

I probably wont though, might be me who cant get the height right.
>>
>>69413934
nah not fakes, i think they're made by a company called artec that sells them to other companies for rebranding. These definitely shouldn't be low output though, the specs say they read at 23k, You would have to take them out and test them to see if there is something wrong.

pretty good, just not my kind of thing. imo it would sound cool if you had a slide and did a really subtle solo near the end. like hold the notes for a really long time while the background keeps going. idk how to explain it...sort of like what you had with those higher bent notes, but on a lower string and a more smooth sound

maybe the second note that plays in that sort of melody thing could be brought down a full step every few times, to change it up

>>69414809
>another faggot whining about tone
who fucking cares? not everyone can afford it or care enough to spend a lot on it, and believe it or not, some people are more concerned about the actual music. critiquing tone is very petty and a cop out, you should be judging his music.
>>
>>69415013
Beyond meme tier.

Unless you are in a 90's Thrash or 70's glam cover band then never buy a BC Rich.
>>
>>69415013
theyre just fucking garbage. never played one that was good. the spiky ones at the bottom would be good if you played ion a techdeath band though. but then again theres much better guitar for that than bc rich

it's boring music it should at least have a good tone
>>
>>69415077

no, if you play tech death you want ergonomy, and having a spine digging into your chest is extremely uncomfortable. if you want an edgy design for playing that kind of stuff, a Jackson Warrior is better suited as it's also more ergonomic.

>>
>>69415329
They're literally made in the same Korean factory that makes guitars like PRS, Chapman etc.. The quality is the same.

The one I linked is Mahogany with a Maple Neck-Through build..Not really a cheap feature.
>>
>>69412757
Building an electric guitar is cheap, but I guarantee your first one won't look as nice or won't play as nice as a $1500 to $2000 one. Also, convenience, it would take you at least a month, and then at most 3 weeks for the lacquer to cure. Not to say it would be bad, but it takes some experience to master, as with anything.

And that's if you have the tools a luthier would have. Giant buffing wheels, files, spoke shaves and scrapers, nice router bits, and I could go on. Oscillating spindle sander to smooth out curves in the body, fretting tools. You don't need a lot of the stuff, you can do a lot by hand, but then it'd take several months.

I mean, you could probably nail it first time easy if you bought like $250 worth of router jigs from stew mac. In the end if you do buy a bunch a specialty tools you'll end up spending more than the cost of the guitars you're buying. The only way that makes sense is you're planning on making several to either keep or sell to recoup your losses.

And that's not factoring in your time, right now you're willing to pay a grand so you don't have to grind through something that will be a major time sink. Like me, I'm a wood worker. Eventually when I get a shop set up at my new house where I have room for tools I'm going to start building guitars. But that's my other major hobby besides music, I'm a trained cabinet maker, I build furniture, and I also do wood carving and have a lathe. I have a lot of the specialty tools already.

But, the biggest deciding factor, would you rather spend your free time building guitars or playing them?
>>
>>69415366
Maybe it would look good if you had some matching armour to go with it
>>
>>69415410
being made in the same factory doesn't mean they cant be shit tho. maybe i need to try the really high end ones, but the lower end and mid price ranges have been garbage. prs and chapman are much better

Non-woodworker here.
Some of these tools seem more an issue of convenience rather than necessity, am I right in thinking that ? Because I've been itching to try my hand at building a fretless bass just to get comfortable with the basics of it, and it doesn't seem so daunting to me.

>>
>>69414577
I started guitar at 30.
There will always be kids who can play circles around me and make me look like a fool.
>>
>>69415624
Absolutely. Really, you can get by with a jigsaw for rough cutting the body, hand sanding to round off the edges, and a router to cut out the neck, pup, and bridge(if applicable. Router will also cut the truss rod channel. You should get a spoke shave to give the body contours if you want, you'll need it to carve the neck. Fretting is part of the bear, if you're going fretless you're taking out one of the most difficult parts which is also easy to mess up and really noticeable. A drill, but a drill press would be a lot better(don't buy the ones for less than $100 from harbor freight, they aren't true, check Craigslist). Harbor freight has a relatively cheap oscillating spindle sander, if it's sanding capacity is more than the thickness of your body I'd get it, sanding corners for hours with sand paper wrapped around a dowel is horrible. That's if you're doing something like a fender style body, something like a thunderbird doesn't have tight corners that it's hard to get a shave into.

If you're not doing frets, your only big concerns are distance between nut and bridge, and action across the whole neck. If you plan on cutting your own nut you need the files. You could potentially do it with really small files from the hardware store, but you could also potentially go through 3 or 4 blanks cause you cut too much away.

And clamps. You need clamps. And various straight edges and rules. I highly recommend a neck pocket and pickup cavity router jig from stew mac, and a pattern bit. It'll make your life infinetly easier.

Anything is possible, they've been making guitars for much longer than there's been electricity and incredibly accurate measuring tools.
>>
>>69415852
I honestly believe there's a point with instruments that someone can play pretty much everything. Except for maybe like jelly lord or something, even that isn't impossible. The guy was only like in his 20s?
>>
>>69415624
>>69415868
Also, radius blocks for the neck, to shape the fingerboard radius, not the frets(obviously). And at least one fine tooth small kerf handsaw, like a dovetail saw. The latter isn't necessary, the former is.

All the power tools I mentioned can be used all over the place, the router is the most versatile tool in the woodshop, next to the table saw.

Also, if you plan on doing a neck through you'll need access to a thickness planer and table saw for that part. Check craigslist, see if you can find someone you can throw $50 or so to make a couple passes.
>>
>>69415868
>>69415927
Thanks a lot lad, the part about instrument making being so old is kinda motivating too. I'll post some of my work if I ever get to it.
>>
>>69415886
there is definitely such a point. what's important is that once you get there, what do you do with your skill?
>>
>>69416191
I hope you do, it's a labor of love, but it's an incredibly rewarding experience. There's plenty of luthiers on YouTube making guitars in their garage, some of them walk you through what they're doing. You could also check out the wood whisperer on there, and they have a bunch of episodes of new Yankee workshop uploaded as well. Those 2 are all various forms of woodworking, mostly furniture building(one episode of NYW has Norm making a scale doll house of his workshop). Those 2 will get you up on tools, tool setup, measuring, terminology, how wood reacts to different tooling, finishing, and other helpful tidbits. All of those go across the board, you can use that info anywhere.

Finishing is one of the most important steps though, if you do it wrong your project will look like garbage. Some guys like to just use tung oil, but if you want the traditional shiny finish you're going to need to learn about lacquer(dangerous stuff if used in an unventilated area, read an SDS before using it) and rubbing it out. If you want that look watch 9001 videos on it, and read a few articles. It's a tedious process, but it's my favorite part of woodworking, honestly. I've refinished cheap guitars and crappy firniture a few times just cause I like it so much.

You can buy most tools used pretty cheap. I got an 80s craftsman sabre saw(it's just a jig saw) for $10, works like a dream. The best part about buying used tools in good condition, if you keep them in good condition and buy them at the going rate or below then realize you don't enjoy woodworking you don't lose any resale value. That saw I mentioned, I could sell it for $20. Don't buy from pawn shops unless absolutely neccesary, you'll be paying 80+% of the cost of new usually.

How advanced do i need to be to learn how to play Jazz?

Not at all. You don't even need ears, just press the strings and pluck in a semi-orderly fashion. It's not like anyone will listen

You don't need to be a virtuoso to start off.

Start by listening to jazz while you're building your chops up and learning your theory and scales etc.

There are books that will guide you from the very basics, too

try the ones in the OP or searching "jazz guitar pdf" on your favorite torrent site

I also prefer the longer scale length and wider nut of the OMs

I had an idea for a social network for musicians.

Basically, you start out by creating an account. You can log your instruments, amps, pedals, etc, name what you play in terms of genres, the gear would be ranked like weapons and armor in an MMO, then you would play in different categories and an AI would rank your skill level, listening for scales, missed notes, being on time, etc and rank you to battle against similarly skilled players.

Idk, i had this idea when I was high as fuck on LSA a few months back. How feasible is this?

Been a while /gg/. Finished up a new instrumental fingerstyle tune last night: https://soundcloud.com/epoch6/sumallo-grove

Also picked up another cheap beat to shit old parlor (sitting on the chair in pic related), not sure if I've already shared it here. Might be the prettiest budget beater I've ever seen, the figuring on the veneer is awesome.

My favorite budget acoustic for fingerstyle right now is the Washburn R314KK, which usually goes for $500. My second favorite is the Sigma 00M-15S, which I think plays and sounds noticeably better than the Washburn, but usually goes for $650, and isn't as nice to look at in my opinion.

Both of those guitars are parlor - orchestra sized acoustics, meaning they're much smaller than most acoustics but still larger than travel guitars. I think this is really the first question you should ask yourself before buying acoustics, what size/shape are you comfortable with and is it compatible with your style of playing. Most people feel that parlor to orchestra sized is more comfortable for finger style, I agree. I also think they sound better for fingerstyle, they have a punchier and less reverberated tone than larger dreadnought sized acoustics. Dreadnoughts are thought to be better for strumming for that reason, their larger and more reverberated tone is better suited for strumming and sustained leads.

All of that being said, I'd encourage you to find an orchestra or parlor sized guitar from $500 - $750. My favorite budget brands are Washburn and Sigma. I have also liked some Seagulls, Guilds, and Taylors. I've learnt to avoid most Fender acoustics, especially budget Fenders.

The bass was definitely a mistake buy, should have saved more for a decent jazz bass, but the Squire was my first guitar and it has too much sentimental value to get rid of. Mandolin is more of a recording tool than something I'm super serious about learning.

Is there any trick to learning how many sharps and flats each mode have? Seems like the easiest way is to just learn the circle of fifths and then learn the order of C Ionian, D Dorian, E Phrygian and so on.

circle of fifth/fourths and knowing relatively on which degree a mode starts.
Ionian's always the 1st degree of the major scale, Dorian the 2nd, Phrygian the 3rd (that sounds like a rapper's name), etc.
Takes a little bit of math to do but personally that's how I conceive it (that's basically how I conceive music theory as a whole anyway)

How many hours did you play guitar today? I'm up to 4 hours total. My guitar just stays in tune so well these past 2 days for some reason, I've found the perfect amp settings, I'm starting to get the hang of fast 16th scale runs and I've just discovered that Biaxident isn't half as difficult as I remember it being when I learned (and last played) it 5 years ago.
I should really start listening to Enya for the rest of the day so I don't get tempted into playing again, my housemates will hate me.
>>
Just came back from the Black Sabbath concert.

Ozzy flashed his ass and noticed me in the audience.

>>
>>69422741
Yup, seems like how I visualize it. If I learn the circle of fifths then I'll know that, say, D have two sharps and if I learn the order of C Ionian, D Dorian, etc then I'll know that Dorian have two flats so playing a D Dorian scale is all natural notes.

>>69422891
saw them twice, each time ozzy sounded like he was going to collapse and it was way too crowded in front of the stage. I really don't get the hype.

>>69422948
That's not actually how I do it. If I take for example D phryigian, then I'll know phrygian is the third mode of its corresponding key, so I'll go back three steps from the root of the phrygian mode and end up on the root of the major scale that corresponds to it, in this case A major, which then has three sharps.

>>69423105
I think consistency is really important, being able to play ten times the same thing over and over without getting it wrong.
>>
>>69423159
> D phrygian
> A major
Anon, I...
>>
>>69423159
Eh, I'm only trying to learn how many sharp and flats each mode have. If I'm going to play a D Phrygian mode then I'll just start on the D and play a Phrygian scale shape. It's not like I plan on improvising every scale note for note when playing
>>
>>69423119
I think another thing that's important to practice in order to train your ear is "internalising notes".
Like for instance play the C major scale and hum the notes over it, then try to actively think of a melody using those said notes.

>>69423197
yeah Bb. Now I look like a retard speaking of consistency when I can't even get my notes right.

Your main worry with jazz guitar is chords and rhythm - if your learning jazz then you need to know your chords all over the neck, all the extensions and rhythmic styles.

-Major 7, minor 7, dominant 7, diminshed, half diminshed, sus chords
-7ths, 9ths, flat 9ths, sharp 11ths, 6ths
-Swing, bossa nova, ballad, jazz blues, funk/fusion

Then there's common chord progressions and song forms before you even think about soloing.

You need good amp gain and an overdrive, not a distortion pedal. 6505 plus TS9 is the tried and true combination. Good chug tone = relatively low amp gain with the overdrive making up for same of it, you're going to need to pick aggressively

The old brown acoustic with the tailpiece on the ground propped up against the stool is an old B&J Serenader, likely late 30s but not certain. It's solid birch and has ladder bracing, I've been told that B&J began moving away from ladder bracing in the 40s, that's all I have to go on for a manufacturing date (no serial number).

It's a much better player than the nicer looking Kay parlor that you commented on, great action and a very dull woody tone, here's a demo recording:
http://picosong.com/zuVv/

The crazy looking 3 stringed instrument with the dragon headstock is a Thai Phin, their version of a dulcimer guitar. As far as I know they're all handmade, it certainly looks that way, the build quality is quite poor but the headstock is awesome. The frets are somewhat diatonically spaced, meaning you tune it to an open key and then play any frets you want. I've read that a lot of these aren't built to any particular scale, the builder spaces the frets to his own preference by ear.

Anyway, this is what it sounds like:

If you were talking about the other brown acoustic next to the chair that's a Washburn R314KK, awesome budget guitar with some unusual design choices geared towards fingerstyle. It has a hard V shaped neck which is really nice for wraparound thumb chords, an open headstock which adds tuning stability (much steeper breakover angle at the nut), and fanned string spacing towards the saddle for easier right hand picking. $500 - $600 depending on the store.

Literally why do people still buy Gibson in 2016? At least Fender is understandable because it's harder to recreate a genuine Strat or Tele tone and they don't overprice their guitars but there's nothing Gibson does that other brands don't do better and cheaper, people only buy Gibson because they care more about their image than actually playing guitar
>>
>>69427311
Indo Ibanez are good though, and even their non-GIO China models seem to be slightly better than Epiphone at best.

Phrased it badly, I mean that HH guitars are way more common than SSS or Tele style pickups so you're just a pickup swap away from getting the Gibson sound and will probably sound better than the stock pickups you get in a Les Paul

An hour a day should have you playing open chords comfortably in a month i think

What's a reasonable amount of time to wait for Guitar Center to ship a used guitar before I start contacting them to figure out what's taking so long? I ordered on Monday and they still haven't shipped it yet. At this rate I'd have rather just overpayed at one of the pawn shops in town.
>>
>>69428368
Depends on what you mean by good, if you just want to be able to play Neutral Milk Hotel-esque songs and only play the basic chords then that'll probably take a few months at most but being interesting is a different story.
>>
>>69428563
Why don't you just call the store?

No. 6 strings is absolutely massive in your hands compared to even 5 strings and the high C is very niche and not so useful in a lot of genres.

Was kinda in the same boat as you, guitar since 2003, just got my first 5 string. I never really played bass, and i never played a 7string guitar, but I made the transition smoothly. 6 string might be weird for a second cause 6 string guitar patterns won't work, but it should be easy to adjust. The only thing I'd be concerned about is the width of the fretboard, but that should also be easy to adjust too. The strings will also likely be much closer together than your 4 string.
>>
>>69428306
Oh yeah, just realized that Guthrie Govan also sounds like Holdsworth with his legato playing and chromatic runs but he's probably even more of a freak of nature than Holdsworth is

It's specifically marketed as a baritone guitar (unlike the MH-2015) and you can comfortably tune to B or A with good tension. Given the extra features and the nice Seymour Duncan humbucker, it's a decent fucking buy for $750 if you factor out the case. What more do you want?

They will probably be fine with it. A lot of fusion guys use ibanez. Also about the HSH thing, the S series ibanez guitars are really nice and the single coil makes it more versatile than the RG series. It's funny how a HSH configuration gives you so many more options than a HH, RG's are still cool though and having 24 frets must be useful as my S only has 22. Pic related is my one.
>>
>>69429185
Most RGs are HSH, mine is. It's usually the hardtails that are HH and the trem versions that are HSH for some reason, I want a hardtail and a HSH.
>>
Why is my B string louder than the other strings on my 'tric 'tar? It's really annoying me and I csnt make it go away.
>>
>>69429270

>>
>>69429222
Ah right. I've only seen HH ones so I assumed they were all like that. Worst comes to worst could buy a trem bridge model and just hardtail it. I think tremolo bridges are neat and it adds another way to express yourself without the need for more effects or other electronic gizmos.
>>
>>69429290
Yup, been wanting to install a Tremolno but they can't be installed on the Edge Zero bridge I have in my guitar without having to drill new holes and shit. I doubt I'm going to buy another trem guitar again, having one guitar with it is nice for when you actually want to use it but it's pointless to have on all your guitars in my case since I rarely use it.

>>69427403
I'd 2nd this. I got an indo RG from the pre-GIO years, it's fine. Even the lower-end floyd (i can't think of the exact one it is) is still in good shape. The paint job is kinda crap tho, but that's not a big deal at like 15 years old. They turned the same guitar to absolute garbage with the GIO line. Changed the pickups, no more "wizard II" neck, replaced the bridge with that "single locking" floyd thing....

>>69429360
I couldn't effectively use a floating trem back when I was more inexperienced, I could do some dimebag and herman reeeeeee stuff, but it got real cheesy real quick. I couldn't think of anything cool to do with it. I think I'd be able to use it better now, I'm starting to incorporate tapping, sweeps, and chord partials into improvised solos which I never even really practiced. It is kind of a niche thing, especially for me since I haven't even cared about playing metal in years, I haven't touched a trem arm since 09 when I took it off and drawered it. I've been hard tail since 2011. I've been thinking of picking up a hollow meme with a bigsby, I think I'd do cooler things with that than I ever did with my floyd.

This guy again I sent another message to the shop asking the difference between the two setups and here is the reply

"Pro setups make the guitar action the best it could possibly be, usually there is some fret levelling and nut/saddle cutting, minor setups are only as good as the frets can take. Fret job quality varies wildly on guitars, and sometimes the action can only be lowered so far before buzzing out."
>>
>>69432141
ask them what the difference is. If they expect to charge you that much money, they should expect to justify how and why.

You can do it yourself. There's a ton of videos available if you have access to the internet. Just fuck around with the "$25" job yourself until you get comfortable... (don't file shit) see if you like your own results. If you wanna mess with the truss rod, just remember it doesn't take much effort to turn it. If you think your using too much, stop before you break something. When i was 14 and didn't know shit i was able to set up my pos no-name guitar well enough (with a few super frustrating attempts) that my richfag friends that played longer than me were impressed with in terms of playability, and i didn't file nut/frets or adj the truss rod ever, until i had a better grasp on what i was doing... like 10 years later
