I can suggest some do some bluegrass and country with some finger picking. If you don't know much about that, just play melodies while you're playing unitones. Either take a power chord minus the fifth and fit your melody between you alternating the roots in that shape, you you can do an open string and the 7 in the string below and fit your melody accordingly. Shit's fun as hell to get into

My neck's warped so I can't exactly get any note but "dying bee" out of the first frets of the GBE strings.
Plus I'm more looking for some technical practice rather than some musical/creative practice (although I may need it more), I feel like I need to work more on using big, full chords too, which is why I was thinking about classical.
Thanks for the suggestion anyway.

I understand, no worries. You could try some jazz, I've been taking jazz guitar lessons for a few years now and it's pretty in depth with how the chords and bass connects to the melody. Off the top of my head all I can think would be Oleo by Sonny Rollins, some miles davis or Jimmy Smith could be good to, or there's Django if you want to really challenge yourlself. Les Feulles Mortiz (autumn Leaves) was a fun one we learned if you want some stuff that you can easily connect all the sections.

Anon you're not supposed to buy all that shit upfront.

I was with my guitarist friend who's been playing for a while and he only owns one mexican Strat and a shitty amp while I own two basses, a guitar, two amps, multiple pedals and am in the process of getting cymbals for a drumkit I just bought and he goes like "gee man how you do it" and I'm like man I've been buying this shit for 8 years now little by little.

I know that, but since music is pretty much my only hobby (almost completely dropped videogames now), I play a lot and after 2-3 hours, you kinda get bored and want to explore other kind of sounds. DAWs and VST don't give that same kind of satisfaction you get from playing an instrument.
But having a shitty instrument, I know at least that patience is key to getting new gear.

I have a Blues Deluxe (pretty much the same thing but 40 watts) and it is a good base tone for using a lot of effects. The only thing I would be concerned about with the junior is that a lot of reverb can push an amp into distortion. I really like this sound, though it may not be what you are looking for.
>>
Does anyone here play PRS? Been thinking about getting the PRS SE Mark Holcomb model
>>
>>69397488
The 900s used to get a lot of hate for the diode clipping stage, but I always liked the sound of them. The DRs have a couple mods to better suit them for metal. At least the 100 watt heads do. Tighter low end, more gain available. I liked the sound a lot more afterwards, but I liked it before too. I think they're fine amps.

The v is a perfect fit if you're doing classic styled metal like maiden or whatever.

7/10 if you're going for that
Not 2 half stacks or a wall of amps
Not a jcm 800
Mxr distortion
Not a plain black leather strap with studs

Joking aside I like it

So I was messing around tapping some boring one string minor arpeggios like everyone and their mother does and I've found a neat little technique I've never heard being used.

The basic idea is taking that you take the same let's say 5-7-12 and 5-7-10 tapping pattern, with the last note being tapped, and instead of tapping one note on the right hand, you tap two notes and leave one ringing in the back for the whole measure (in my case I've tapped the seventh, so if we're playing this on the E string, you're playing 12X12XXX and 10X11XXX)
Here's a very sloppy and boring example of that said technique. If anyone has some songs where it's actually used well, I'm curious about it.

You would be surprised. They come into play a lot when you're using more complex chords, especially in a jazz context. You'll even end up playing different modes for individual chords. Keep doing that shit.

It's okay to play in the way which you find to be the most comfortable.

The direction your guitar is pointing won't effect sound, but how comfortable you are playing it does effect sound.

It's normal if the guitar tilts forward a bit.
It's extremely weird if it's pointing forward in a 90 degrees angel relative to your body, why the fuck would you do that

sup guys, I want to start learning how to play guitar (Metal to be specific). Can you help a newfag out? so /gg/ what's the best way to clean about 15 years worth of oxidation off of frets?

I recently came into posession of my dad's old guitar and it's perfect condition except for the oxidation on the frets. I've had a professional luthier look over the instrument and confirm that everything is okay, but he wants to charge about $400 just to clean the frets. Seems a little steep for about an hour or two's worth of work, and that i could do it myself with a bit of sand paper, steel wool, and some masking tape/fret polish.

If the frets are oxidized, you don't simply need to polish them, you need to do a whole fretjob.
or even worse, if the whole fret is done, you need to refret the neck.
400$ is steep but a fretjob isn't supposed to be cheap either

>>

Yeah there isn't much. Best you can hope for is an independent person on youtube putting together a review/demo video with halfway decent sound quality. The major sites, even if they aren't directly trying to sell something to you, always give reviews like 'pretty good 4/5' for literally everything.
>>
>>69402578
You'll probably need more tools than that I'm afraid. That is a lot of money. Perhaps he's trying to preserve the guitar if it's a classic. Even a complete refret shouldn't cost that much, so perhaps he just feel his time is worth that much.

But typically a redress you'll need a radius block matched to the radius of the fret board, some files, a lot of patience, and good attention to detail. If the frets are too low to redress it'll need to be refretted.

It might not require a redress, if the metal isnt pitted or deformed. Its an old guitar so the frets might be worn out anyways. If you just need to clean them you might be able to get away with #0000(4 aught) steel wool and some polish. If it's an unsealed fretboard like rosewood I'd oil it first so if the Polish makes it past the tape the wood won't be dry and suck it in like a crack head taking his first hit for the day. I use mineral oil, listed as cutting board oil in a lot of hardware stores, it doesn't go rancid. Oil per normal, twice if you have to, then wait to apply tape for a day or so.

DON'T USE SANDPAPER UNLESS YOU'RE REDRESSING WITH A RADIUS BLOCK

>>
>>69403007
Just play master of puppets
>>
>>69402578

Try this:

>first, either be very careful or put masking tape on the fretboard between every fret
>tape a garbage bag, cover guitar body with it, masking tape around the edge so only the neck is uncovered. this will keep an debris from getting stuck in and around your bridge, pickups, pots, switch

>take a fine grit sandpaper and gently go over the frets
>the point is mostly just to rough up the surface for the next step. very little material should be coming off
>now take 000 synthetic steel wool and a bottle of naphtha
>put a few drops of naphtha on the wool and go over each fret
>wipe clean with a clean rag and see what kind of progress has been made
>repeat if necessary
>wipe clean when frets are satisfactory
>take another clean rag and dip in to pure mineral oil
>rub down frets and fretboard with the mineral oil (light coating only)
>wait a minute or two
>wipe oil away with clean rag

That'll do the trick if the oxidation is mostly on the surface. If there are pits in the frets then those might need to be replaced if they're deep enough. If it's only slight pitting, you could do a fret leveling and crown to fix it.
>>
>they dont embracing bolt ons and just replace the neck when something like this happens

Unless it's a fender he might be fucked on finding a replacement neck, this is assuming it's even bolt on. There's a whole slew of other problems you might run into if you just buy a generic one off the internet as well. If he gets one custom built locally it could end up costing more than what a redress or refret could cost, assuming he finds someone not trying to jew him.

I do need to round down the treble e side of the nut so it's less sharp (or swap it out for a different one) and I put locking tuners in, but the rest is stock and solid.

Found a deal through CL and jumped on it. I'd recommend the same.

unfortunately my dad never got a chance to play it much, since he passed a year or so after buying it.

as for quality, it's a cheapish yamaha FG 400A. my dad payed about $350-400 for it new, so i'm more worried about keeping it preserved for sen I doubt it'll need to be refretted entirely (but if it does then i'll definitely put up the money for it because i know how much work that entails). One of the first things i did when i got my hands on it was to polish the fretboard anyway since it had been sitting in a closet in it's case for 15 or so years and was obviously in need of it.

as far as i can tell there are no pits or deformation on the frets, but i do plan on taking it to another shop in my city to get a second opinion on it before going through with it myself, or if i get a more reasonable quote for cleaning (or a second opinion on whether or not the frets are too far gone to be saved) i'll definitely let a professional take the reins and do it for me.

As much as I use and abuse reverb (ambient shoegaze fag) I don't really bother with pedals, since the digital DAW reverb will be much cleaner than trying to mic a guitar that's going through a reverb pedal since it will be limited by the amp and won't have that encompassing sound unless you really know how to work with it mixing-wise. I've used the EHX Cathedral before and it gets pretty big-sounding with clean tones, not so sure about distorted though.

like i said in my post here >>69403847
it was my dad's guitar and he paid about $350 for it new, so there's no way i'm willing to pay more than that just to clean the frets up.

I'd be willing to drop $100 or so on it, for sentimental reasons, and willing to go higher if it does need to be refretted. But so far the only person i was able to get to look at it quoted me at an insane price without so much as a suspicion that it might need more work than just knocking off some oxidation on the frets.

What is your opinion about this guitar?

(tfw the real reason this guitar caught my eye more than other hollow bodies is because i think it looks really nice)

It's just good enough to edge over most people's head. fucking kek.
>>
>>69399434
I have a bunch of dumb stickers on my 6 string meme bass so I guess I'm not really one to talk.
I'm the guy u replied to btw

>>
>>69403895
respectable choice, but I disagree
>>
>>69405585
I can already see one downside to this guitar actually.

The master volume knob is in a location which is really not ideal for volume swells.

hmmmm.
It's still a pretty guitar though.

I don't know what kind of sound you are going for death metal listen to this
You could throw that second riff somewhere in the middle I guess

>>69405815
idk, no sound in particular. ive been listening to a lot of converge lately. i just need to know how to make a segue for those parts.

Theres a Fender Maurauder on craigslist near me for 350, is it worth a half hour drive to check out?
>>
>>69406359
If you like the way they look. I don't.
>>
>>69406169
I couldn't figure out how to get it to show up with a name and all cause I'm a retarded phone poster, but I made an all black jazz bass, was gonna call it The Baby C by Ana Nimoose
>>
>>69406466
I'm also a phone poster. I just turned it sideways and took a screenshot.
>>
>>69406496
Did you "design" it?
>>
>>69406522
>>69406496
Nvm, I figured it out
>>
>>69406522
Yes, it is my masterpiece. The lack of options upset me.
>no vintage pickup option
>no nitrocellulose lacquer option
>>
anyone play 12 string acoustic here?
>>
>>69406659
Yeah, if I was serious about buying one I'd be disappointed. You can't even get a solid white or black humbucker.

I finally got one to post. Is a masterpiece
>>
>>69406838
Honestly for what I want a used reissue strat from any year before 1966 would be better than anything in their current American line.

Am i the only one who can't get into SG's because they look too edgy?

Is this a good guitar? It's Epiphone so I'm slightly skeptical.

http://www.guitarcenter.com/Epiphone/Limited-Edition-Les-Paul-Quilt-Top-PRO-Electric-Guitar.gc
>>
>>69407929
It's basically a Standard with a quilt top and upgraded hardware. Next best would be the Tribute Plus. It comes with Gibson PUs, maple top, and special neck profile.

Is it autistic to think that 5 stringed fender basses look...wrong? Like the headstock doesn't look right when it's not a standard 4 string bass.
>>
>>69408391
I hate it too, i'm still going to buy a 5-string Jazz tho
>>
>>69408391
The 5 string p basses must drive you nuts, with the asymmetric pickup
>>
>>69408469
I can't bring myself to even look at them. 5 string and up is pretty much active-only territory for me.

Classic '69
Rams head '73
Red Army '91
Green Russian '94
Creamy Dreamer
Fire Red Fuzz (enhanced JFET clipping stage)

WHICH im thinking about red army/ russian muff
>>
>>69409382
ALSO considering putting a midrange mod in there, adjusts the frequency of the tone.

what do you guys think? what does this add? yay or nay
>>
>>69409382
i looked up some videos and really liked the Black russian, but with the prebuild PCB i have its not an optional variant :C

I honestly can't think of a better way to let the audience know that the treble on your modeling amp is going to be up way too high.

It's like how certain species evolved vibrant colors to let predators know that interacting with them will be unpleasant... Nature is beautiful.

Cool, have a good time. Tbh I'm not really a fan, I appreciate the technical skill but their music isn't particularly dynamic or melodically imaginative.

My fav. instrumental band atm is Exivious. I've also been listening to a lot of Steve Vai and Frank Zappa.

ty for new shit
i literally just found them the other day. but tickets are only like $15, covet and some jason richardson dude are gonna be there too so why not. it's over spring break.
>>
>>69410329
Richardson was one of the guitar players in Born of Osiris, then did a brief stint in Chelsea Grin before launching a solo career. His playing is pretty interesting, although he's definitely on the "Ernie Ball Music Man endorsee Satrianicore" spectrum.

I have one. It's a cheap Ibanez that I impulse bought, it ended up being low quality and I regretted it. Anyhow, I recorded this sample a while ago for an anon here who wanted to hear 12-string with delay and reverb:

thinking of getting a simon/patrick spruce 12. made in canada, seems pretty decent.
>>
>>69407627
I always found them to be ugly. I feel like that about Gibsons in general really.
At the same time I think they are awesome guitars. Just not for me.
>>
>>69403643
People hate on the birds, but what I like most about them is that they're different than the norm-- the dots, the blocks, even the thumbnails, etc.

Though I do like all those inlays, too. Not so much the sharktooth, except on a Rick 4003 bass for some reason.

>>
>>69411952
how did you not notice somebody dropping your guitar :/

it was probably already there anon
>>
>>69411952
Something similar happened to me at a jam session I was hosting at a local bar. Finished playing a few tunes as part of the house band and this one kid asked if he could use my guitar to play what I think was a Sublime song. I got it back after he was done and their was blood all over the low E string and around the 20th fret. Apparently he was pretty drunk and was like, jamming his palm into the bridge of the guitar while he was playing and cut himself on it. Fortunately he was pretty cool about it (although he wasn't in a position to argue, as he was hammered and scrawny and I was about ten inches taller and only a couple beers deep) and gave me $20 or so to cover the cleaning/string replacement costs.

Learned my lesson after that. No one touches my gear now for any reason. Bring your own damn instruments.
>>
>>69412235
what kind of people are these anons hanging out with that actually ask people to try their guitars

youre just putting the person in an awkward position to say no. if they wanted you to try their guitar they would have offered. gotta respect people's property m8s.

if it's my close friend and in know theyre not gonna fuck it up ill say ok, but otherwise im like 'eh maybe another time'
>>
>>69412235
>>69412329

>>69412373
They didn't drop it, probably bumped it on a chair or table edge or something. Didn't notice it before because I clean my guitar at least once a day after I play
>>69412387
The friends i was with were all dudes that were taller than me and worked out and shit. Typical jock behaviour too. Wasn't that close to any of them so I was too scared to be straightforward and say no :(
>>
>>69412476
if ur guitar cracks from getting bumped its either trash or was already damaged
>>
>>69412476
kek with people u dont know its even easier

starting to think this story is anons fantasy of being a little sissy bitch and getting buggered by chads after not letting them try his guitar.

>>69412505
