You know, I think I'm listening to Devouring Ghost for like the first time in about a year; and I must say this album was extremely underrated. Sure, the typical McCoy circlejerkers (myself most certainly being one of those booth cocksuckers) totally ate it up; but I think a lot of people never really gave it the proper attention it deserved. I mean as an album, McCoy does some interesting things that I wish atmo and melodic bands would take note of with his instrumentation and riffing. He really blends his classic raw style well into the ambient side of things with this release. In a way, itâs almost like a more accessible Ancestors with a less forceful sound. Granted that probably has something to do with the fact that listening to the album is only half of the experience; and it is a shame not everyone has access to the artwork that goes along with the release because I think that really takes away from the experience this album provides whether the listener is aware of that deprivation or not. I guess Iâm just tired and rambling while I try to say that the riffs on Devouring Ghost are still very solid and the production is something I wish Mark could do on more releases here and there. I know I gave this record I an extremely high score on rym when it came out, and I still believe it deserves a 3.5 at the very least. It was at the top of the NBBBMN list I made last year in which I rated 100 releases from 2015 though to be honest I did mostly listen to releases I kind of knew I was going to hate but thatâs a discussion for another post.
Just to be clear in my old rym list (itâs no longer available due to a fight that I got into with a mod), I believe I called this record either my 3 or 4 favorite record of 2015 right after some Drowning the Light and Werwolf releases.
>>69371057
im tired and tweaking on vyvanse because i have finals and papers due. i just need to make my rambling thoughts as i relisten to this album clear as a way to say fuck you to the trendies that hated on my list from last year as this album being rated highly was one of the reasons why. now if you'll excuse me i need to listen to aerosols, sqrm, and issei sagawa.

I am a Thrash vet that recently has come over to Death metal. Thrash just is not heavy enough for me anymore, even Pantera is starting to sound too light.
Listen to mostly Scandinavian, I try to avoid American metal in that respect.
As for Black Metal, never had a reason to delve too deep. Think that is about to change.

oooooh you're fucking scary, fuck off and die you stupid faggot
with what will you wrap it up /nbbmn/

I should warn you that black metal isn't very "heavy" at all. It's more about atmosphere.
If you want some more popular bands that are a bit heavier I would suggest inquisition, mgla and deathspell omega as a starting point.
Check out other stuff too though, like burzum and darkthrone (obviously), and other bands like peste noire, paysage d'hiver, and drudkh for some variety.
Those bands should be a good entry into black metal.

Check out Storm of the Lights Bane by Dissection, it's right up your alley and acquaints you with the basics of bm aesthetic and tonality.
Then check out At the Heart of Winter by Immortal. It has very trad. heavy metal characteristics like the above rec, but slightly less slick of production. Their first 5 albums are good, the most important being Pure Holocaust. Inquisition is an inferior version of Immortal.
If you like Scandinavian death metal, listen to Darkthrone's A Blaze in the Northern Sky. It's got pretty necro lofi production, plus some odd dm riffs scattered throughout. Their first 5 are all essential listening.
Also you are probably already familiar with the 80s material by Bathory, Celtic Frost, and Mercyful Fate. But if not make sure you've heard them because that's where all this stuff largely originates.
