I used to consider it this magical thing that enabled me to momentarily "be" at a higher (not necessarily meaning "superior") state of being. This little trick to disappear into an otherwordly place and marvel at its secrets for a few minutes.

Then I grew out of my teen years, realised the music's all that matters really and that such naïve ideas would only inevitably lead me to disappointment and despair.

In my (popular opinion) the music should be obscure, raw and fairly primitive. The ideology behind the music should stay against modern society, against abrahamic religions, etc.
Themes about alternative spiritual ways such as paganism and occultism are very compatible with black metal, some nationalism too as long as it isn't all about hitler and the known bullshit.

Long story short from the "doing it wrong" side of things, if you're to talk to some of the top-tier musicians that aren't faking it, they'll tell you it's about approaching death and bleakness from an angle of "the sacred". I'm not going to go into it too much, it's too hard to explain outside of actual conversation.

As far as the memory is concerned, there was a time where I got three deaths in a row of a family member, then a lover, then a friemd, all of whom meant something. When that song came out, the msuic fit my mood and the lyrics reminded me of aspects of each of them. I wouldn't say it helped, but it did help organise.

Oh, and that reminds me, once I've done my uni work I've really got to work on covering my mate's song from EDM to BM. With any luck, making it will help me solidify my new style of the latter. I'll let you gais know next year if it worked...assuming anyone's still here to make the thread, this year was even thinner than the last...

There's not much about beyond the Liber Azerate desu, and I don't know if that's even still around. I got it years back, and I can't say I kept it after the first read. It was interesting, but not anything new to me. Still, if you've not read it, it'd be worth the one read if you can dig it up.

A few people here and there like the Liber Falxifer series, but I'd take it with a pinch of salt. Kind of overly syncretic, as is the trouble with much modern occultism. Still, has a few interesting ideas here and there.

Beyond this, just find threads and see where they take you, that's often the best way to walk a path that truly becomes one's own over time. Still, trying to find decent teachers can be as rewarding as it is nigh-on impossible, but I shan't speak further on the matter or I'll betray my sauces, heh.

Musically bands like Bathory's "Under the Sign" was already out by 87 and did much more musically than Deathcrush which came out the same year. What Euronymous did was more for the genre's image, encouraging bands to adopt black and white cover art, experiment using higher strings, embrace more anti-human or satanic themes, more theatrical stage performances. Don't forget that Darkthrone, Emperor, Mayhem, Immortal, and Varg all attended one another rehearsals or at least traded tapes. In many of their interviews these bands talk about his active influence, albeit somewhat overbearing at times.
