Th' Faith Healers - Imaginary Friend, 1993 (320kbps CBR)

This band belongs to a rather strange and specific scene of the early-to-mid-90s. The overlapping sound could either be defined as shoegaze, early post-rock or even noise pop, depending on the listener. Their 1992 debut was a noisy, grunge-y love letter to Krautrock, making them kind of the guitar-centric, keyboard-less counterpart to early Stereolab. Their sophomore album finds them similarly mixing the noise pop guitar approach of the late 80s and early 90s to great success, while essaying some timbric variety and a stronger focus on melody rather than texture. Melodies are more inviting and poppy, in contrast with their comparatively raw and aggressive debut. Still, it's as dense as their debut (especially considering the closer, a half-hour long, hypnotic, repetitive guitar monolith that once again harks to bands like Can and Guru Guru), and perhaps presents more dynamic contrast, as the quiet-loud-quiet formula fo their debut, which made them at least partially resemble american contemporaries, is further developed in some songs, creating a sense of escalating tension and satisfactory release.

So, all in all it's a direct continuation from their debut, only it shows more restraint and control, which is the result of a band being more comfortable with itself. Sadly that wouldn't stop the band from splitting before any major change in sound could occur. We do have Quickspace as consolation, which takes the TFH sound into a more post-rock, less shoegaze-ish context.

A late 80s release by a very popular idol. Kyoko started her music career early as a 16 year old and enjoyed instant nationwide success. She would later on establish a record for most top ten hits in the oricon charts for 12 consecutive years and is considered one of the most successful 80s idols along Seiko Matsuda and Akina Nakamori. This album sounds a lot of times like a product of its time but there's also some distinct flavors on it, mainly the combination of diverse musical influences and the acid house element here giving a lot of personality for this lp. Some break beat in the mix, some hip hop in between, with a lounge/dub combination, the production is amazing throughout, very entertaining with some hits of art pop in bittersweet overtones, rhythm may sometimes feel tiring and the dancing beat repetitive but at the end it's a driving power that stays with you

A bootleg of a very rare and private release from the early 70s. The concert was held through the period of 3 days in benefit of the owner of the legendary coffee Oz that had been shut down (apparently related to drugs). Very low key and warmful atmosphere, stands as an important artifact from that era.


Miyako Oshi opens with two straight to the business rocksteady tracks, sort of loose in the edges with metallic and dryl vocals streaming over, and closing with a cover of The Beatles "Twist and Shout".

Acid Seven goes for the same rock & roll route entering with an incredibly heavy going psychedelic-surf rock jam with inebriated and overly husky vocals singing along. This part recalls much the sound of bands revolved around the motorbiker culture of the 70s such as gedo. Pretty energetic. For the goodbye, an unexpected intimalist and emotional track closing their side.

Minami Manato enters with a far more restrained, singer & songwriter approach playing his guitar and singing in a more instrospective fashion in contrast to the previous hard hitting big bands. Mellow and bittersweet throughout, basically a one man presentation, reminds me of the likes of Morio Agata or Kenji Endo on here, with an eye tearing cover of "I Shall Be Released" concluding LP 1.

Taj Mahal Travellers goes for a free form sort of claustrophobic piece extended for well over 20 minutes, playing out like a mantra pushing strong mid west influences. After a while it wears off and turns into a relaxing ambiance as though a cold and wet blanket embraced your back after a tiring, agitated journey.
There's no guitar or drums to be heard and is much more akin to abstract avant garde classical than anything else, but their music still manages to finds its place on here, definitely the high point of the whole album

Les Rallizes Denudes finishing the show, unpacking 4 jams and engaging into a more conventional style than most are used to. First track opens with full blown violent noise, while the following tracks throws minimalism andnoise out of the repertoire and goes with a calm psych-rock bluesy ballad ala Jacks, followed by a slightly more experimental track and a noise rock one with some interesting guitar effects. Mizutani's voice is sort of worned out here but perfectly audible, the band provides an enjoyable performance to finish the party. A nice listen.
