I met Robert Hood only once when he played at Analog City in a warehouse/club behind Kings Cross in London in the mid 1990's. I remember even now, over a decade later, that we had a conversation after he finished his set about how his parents had influenced his interest in, and aproach to, music and life.

What a bloke, I thought, to have such talent and yet remain effortlessly genuine and unpretentious. At the risk of making a complete fool of myself I commented, as we parted company, that if he was ever in want of name for a track, as his series of untitled moveable parts releases on m-plant seemed to suggest, he might consider using "Wandering Aimlessly" which just about summed up the state of my life at the time. We shook hands and off he went into the night.

A few monts later, back in Newcastle, after buying on sight the new m-plant release [MP 306] I opened it at home I saw track B was titled "Wandering Endlesly". Maybe against the background of the club soundsystem he had misheard me, perhaps he refined and improved my suggestion, or maybe it was just mere coincidence. I don't suppose I will ever know. What matters is that the man left a lasting positive impression on me. Articulate, intelligent, principled and creative. The master builder. A supremely gifted artist and a gentleman.

I was beginning to think we'd heard the last from Burial, the most reclusive genius electronic music has ever known, and when I read that a new single of his had turned up unannounced in a Toronto record shop the first word that came into my head was "hoax". I've never been so glad I was wrong in my life and when I heard that trademark sibilance of needle on scratched groove that invariably provides the backdrop to some unimaginably strange yet soothing, neo-impressionist wonder, my eyes began to well up with tears. As with Aphex Twin, the only other artist in the field whose work can genuinely be termed non-genre-specific, "Young Death" and "Nightmarket" are so far removed from the dubstep continuum the majority of lazy, unimaginative hacks were forever trying to shoehorn him into, even after "Untrue" broke the downward-plunging jaw of everyone who listened to it for the first time, this is simply a Burial record. I can think of several well-known and respected (not by me I hasten to add) music journals who will slate this record. They're the same ones who were co-conspirators in the scandalously shameful yet successful con trick that duped 99% of the record-buying public into believing Oasis were the best British band since the Beatles, this despite the Gallagher brothers claiming to be inspired by them, yet so obviously misunderstanding them to a similar degree as Charles Manson did. I could name at least 20 bands and artists so far ahead of their time, they still sound futuristic decades after they were forced to split up solely because of the corporate drive to laud the lamentable and eradicate the extraordinary.

Listen to the 2011 re-release compilation "The 5 EPs" by Disco Inferno. I'm almost certain you'll never have heard of them and I absolutely guarantee you'll never have heard anyone like them. A unique, visionary band completely and deliberately ignored and ultimately driven to penury and dissolution by a morally (but far from financially) bankrupt press hell-bent on wresting control of the critical faculties, not just from their own readership's generation, but of all those yet to come into the bargain, solely to secure the success of their major label backers' fiscally motivated dumbing down drive. Chief protagonist? Stand up the NME, then for Christ's sake sit down again, you're a fucking disgrace. Apologies for the rant. I don't know why I bothered anyway. Writers far more skilled than I in the art of standing their ground and arguing their case have tried and failed so I haven't the remotest chance of succeeding. Anyway, this, as I said, is a Burial record, which for the same reason I won't even attempt to describe. Those with minds of their own will love it, those who are told what music to admire (some screeching banshee from the X-Factor who can fit 48 different, horrendous, ear-savaging octaves to the bar or some dismal, trad rock shite even worse than the dismal trad rock shite the band who play it are trying to copy) won't. Thank you for not listening.
