We've seen it for centuries applied to like 5 styles. Nowadays the only tonal music that is considered good is baroque, classical, romantic and jazz. Just 4 styles, wich follow strict conventions.

Why aren't they just creating new comples ut still accesible styles? Why are they leaving that job to uneducated guitarists?

Well, duh. Listening to Wagner requires a higher-degree of intelligence, hence why "sane" people (who have much lower IQ scores on average) don't listen to it.

Insane people (who have much higher IQ scores on average) are more attracted to it, though, since it appeals to the higher level of thinking.

And now we can begin to grasp the nature of the trade-off between craftsmanship and immersion, which works in the following way: every technological advance incorporated into the arts transforms them in various more or less subtle ways, on the one hand rendering the current standard of artworks easier to produce, and on the other making possible the creation of higher, more complex and consequently more engaging artworks. But at the same time as the amount of technology injected into an artwork increases, so does the percentage of craftsmanship of the overall work due to a single person diminishes. This explains why, at the same time as we accord the individual modern artist LESS respect than to the classical one, we nevertheless enjoy modern artworks MORE than classical ones — because enjoyment of an artwork is proportional to immersion, whilst respect for the artist who made it depends on the percentage of craftsmanship of the completed work for which he is responsible.

Schumann's a hit or miss generally. His peaks (symphonies, piano solo works, quintet, quartet) are extraordinary, but pale before schubert's. His last works (to be fair composed after his mental breakdown) are absolute horseshit.

Hello /classical/. Where should I turn to if I can't stop listening to Gorecki's second symphony? I'm digging just chaotic, atonal (this is probably the wrong word, correct me if so) thing. I obviously know Schoenberg and I got Ligeti playing right now as he's the closest I can find.

Stuff that is dark and unorthodox (avant garde?) I guess.

I was stupid for thinking baroque begun and ended with bog. I think I might even like this better than anything I've heard from him. Help me repent, /classical/
