memorize all the chord shapes on 6th, 5th, and 4th strings

Then learn how functional and sequential harmony works. This applies to metal as well, and other genres where complex harmony is hard to find, so you likely won't be using the extended chord shapes like 9ths and 13ths as block chords, but in lead guitar you will use them in arpeggios.

Depending on what genre you're doing, you should either learn scale shapes, licks, or arpeggios for lead. Preferably all of them.

I'm looking for a giggable guitar around the 600 euro mark.. LOOSE JACK ANON

I fell asleep before you replied. Loctite is a brand, but its what everyone calls thread locker, like the q tip/cotton swab thing. Thread locker is like glue for nuts and bolts, keeps them from coming apart over time from vibration or other movement. A nut driver is a screw driver meant to turn nuts. A nut is that hexagon thing that holds the jack in place. Dont use pliers, youre going to damage the nut. Loctite comes in semi permanent, permanent, and i beleieve one weaker than semi permanent. Get the weakest so when you eventually need to take that jack out you can.

Make sure the back of the jack is held in place so you dont twist the wires and damge them, take the nut off, put a little loctite on the threads(if youre clumsy put masking tape around the area so you dont get loctite on your guitar), put the but back on, tighten it to the point youd have to force it to tighten more(stop at that point, dont be heavy handed), let it set for however long the package says it needs to cure.

I just started relearning it, I knew a bit some 3-5 years ago, but I forgot a lot of stuff. Feels good to be back. And now I want to learn it properly. I'm probably gonna come back here regularly to help with motivation.

Hey guys, looking at buying a Tiny Terror or a Dark Terror for just bedroom playing (pretty sure I can't settle for the micro versions of either, but if you can encourage either I'm open to suggestions), any suggestions on which way to go? I'm rather torn because I do play clean a lot, however I also love heavy distortion (love Boris especially).

I'm a bit worried about the maintenance a tube amp entails, but I'm told if I take care of everything I don't have to worry about anything typically for about 5 years.

I started playing in late november 13 years ago. Theres times i dont play as much right now because of work, stress, commitments, etc, but ive never set it down. Longest ill go without playing is a month, but thats rare. Its normally every other day, if even for 10 minutes. Its opened doors for me like nothing else. I appreciate all types of music now, mostly. Not saying i listen to them, but i can hear them and listen attentively. Some of my best friends were just people i knew but through music i developed strong relationships with them.

I dont know what id be doing if i wasnt so involved in music. Probably working and hating life.

Want to upgrade from my OE-20 and might buy a PSL20 this weekend, but what are some other guitars between $500 and $700 with that arch in the neck that would be good for someone who plays doom, black metal, and blue grass? Are Mitchels good, I was also looking at schecters and ibanezs
>>
How often should I change my strings? I bought my guitar 2 and a half months ago and the bottom three strings have gotten a bit rusty already
>>
>>69216100
depends. every couple of months is good if you're a bedroom musician. hell you could keep them until they break if you don't give a shit about tone.

I've never ever seen string rusts on any of my instruments. you might want to get a dehumidifier or else you'll have neck problems too.
>>
>>69216146
Be careful with chemical based dehumidifiers and those little dessicant packets. Some can damage fragile finishes on the long run.
>>
>>69216100
>>69216146

My uncle and cousins guitars get that rust, but that's because they have like 30 guitars and aside from the few they play frequently, they haven't been touched in years unless I picked it up. That being said, if you play a guitar frequently, change your strings when you feel you need that fresh crispy tone. So maybe before you record something or jam, play live for something, or maybe every month if you do lessons.
>>
>>69216225
could be a climate thing. I live in a dry location but I have no idea what the people down south have to content with.
>>
>>69216243

They live in california about two hours south of san francisco. I live in illinois and never get rust, and my house is dry in the winter.Something I'll say with some of the rusty strings on their guitars is that some of them have been in those cases for up to 30 years, so those brittle cardboard leather feeling cases (hell if I'd put an early 80's les paul in a case like they have theirs in)
>>
I have this shitty small guitar amp.
Can I connect it to my (also small) speaker amp using the audio out with an 3,5 adapter?
It does sound better, but I'm a tiny bit afraid it will burn down my house.
>>
>>69215138
That's really inspiring man.
I picked the guitar in March for the first time at 25 because I was going trough some rough times and I needed the distraction and then my friend did it and now we jam together every week and it's the most fun I've had in a really long time.

Yes I'm 6 months in and know scales you should be learning how to play by ear and practicing rhythm if you have your chords down. Rhythm is fairly difficult lead isn't too hard unless you're using a metronome when playing but you should be while playing scales.

Do you want something like a strat or tele? If so, find someone local who is decent with tools (and maybe a second guy who can solder). Buy cheap bodies from eBay, get decent necks and you'll have a "better than fender" tele or strat for the cost of a few hours of work + parts.

I'd legit rather spend $3k on an acoustic rather than $3k on an electric, the craftsmanship behind the body is far more intricate than "drill a bunch of holes and sand off the top so it's smooth".
But if I had $3k to blow on musical instruments, I'd get a bass rig, a guitar rig, and drums, rather than just a grandpa's guitar.

Same reason, delivering jobs way, way late, not delivering jobs, misplacing customer's items.

I think the worse was this one time someone stole a customer's Rickenbacker 360 12-string from his shop along with some other shit, he had to pay most of that shit off his back and close store after.

Well you can get plywood basses for a few hundred bucks but I have yet to find one that doesn't require a complete setup and isn't a complete pain in the ass to play arco.
But you can get away with cheaper basses when you just play pizz, just don't expect them to sound amazing.

>>69218047
My first bass was a Yamaha TRBX 174, neck was too thick and wide, pickups were trash, no body contour, bridge started rattling after a few months, didn't stay in tune properly.
That said, it got me started and I'm really happy for that.
First guitar was a noname Chinese strat copy, sold it within a few weeks. I currently have my first classical guitar, 30 bucks used, I actually like it.
>>69218087
I started playing bass when I was 20. Not even 2 years in now but I have the chance to play with a jazz ensemble soon and I'm fairly confident that I'll find a band in the summer when I have more time.

>how much should I spend
I'd get something used or something really cheap, you can learn how to do a proper setup and you can mess up without any real consequences. That said, I haven't been playing for long and I already own some pretty expensive instruments.
Pretty sure you can start on an electric, I don't see an issue with that.
>>
>>69218047
My first guitar was some Behringer stratocaster copy. Was REALLY fucking shitty.

My first bass was a Squier Bullet Bass from 1984 miJ. Didn't have the original pickups, but plays pretty great, actually. I love it

Understanding the theory and technique behind the song. Practicing a song, and practicing your instrument are two different things.

becoming a good guitarist's easy, just learn piles of technique and have good muscle memory. becoming a good musician's the hard part, as musicality is not about how technical you are, but rather how do you apply that technique.
A thing that a lot of people get wrong is that mindset that technicality is the opposite of musicality, and for a simple reason, it's far easier to be musical if you're playing at 60bpm as opposed to 160bpm

Oddly enough, I've got that mindset from a drum lesson. Look at the blast beat at 2:40 and then the blast beat at 3:10.
They're both based on the same drum pattern, but the latter has some more technique applied to it, and it sounds more organic and musical.

I think the biggest issue with learning guitar (or anything really) when you're not a teenager is the lack of free time. It's much easier to devote 3 hours a day to something when you're 15 years old and have the patience. But like most things in life, you get out what you put in. If you're willing to put in the time and effort it takes to git gud, there's no reason a 50 year old can't do it.
>>
Anyone got any tips for how to make songs sound I guess more "classical", I'm not talking about playing on a classical guitar but just the general feel of it. I guess a simple example is something like the intro to Metallica - Fight Fire With Fire or their other song Call of Ktulu, particularly the bass parts

I don't get that. I wish that I would've picked up an instrument sooner sometimes, but then I always remember 15-yo me. I'm pretty sure I would've just fucked around and not practiced enough back then. I certainly wasn't as patient as I am now. I also didn't know how to learn properly and didn't value that free time I had.

When I saw Slash I just thought "Hey that guy is cool enough to be in a videogame, I wanna be like him" and picked up the guitar.

It's things like those that make you want to succeed, if you're doing it only for the pussy you either forget about it or end up playing Wonderwall at parties; so yeah, picking up the guitar at 15 isn't a very good idea.

Alright, as a general rule, don't put fuses with unknown specs into your amp because that may damage it even more. That said, your amp is already fucked anyways. Cheap bass get! Kramer Disciple (D-1)

So amazon had this bass on at steep discount last week (still does i see) and I bit. Paid $378 CAN, that'd be about $280 US. I guess this is the only bass Kramer currently makes?

Mahogany body, ebony fretboard, EMG MMCS active pickup, knockoff hipshot-esque bridge. Indonesia """quality""" factory setup which of course meant I had to do a complete top to bottom adjust to make it playable. Frets are sharp and I will have to file them at some point as well.

All that said, once I had setup taken care of and new strings on, I have been having a blast with it. Sounds awesome too, although that's 90% because I have a nice amp. I certainly wouldn't pay anywhere near list price for the D-1 but at the price I got it at I am very pleasantly surprised.

What annoys me even more is that so many string sets come with a .120 or a .125 as a standard B string. To have the same tension as a .100 E string you need a .130 or .135 B string in most cases (going by Daddario nickel wounds here). That shit is so stupid.

I kinda want a 30'' or 32'' scale bass. They're super comfy to play. If you want a long scale hollowbody check out the epiphone Jack Cassady bass.

I stupidly noped on a very cheap Laney CUB10 a few months ago and now I'm interested in getting 5w babby tube amp.

Would you recommend this for low volume bedroom practicing or do I need to buy a $20 chink volume attenuator? My pedals are a tubescreamer and reverb.
>>
>>69229301
You'll be fine. For clean, up to 15 watts is fine for bedroom usage. If you want to drive it, 5 or 10 is more than quiet enough

Yamaha for a low priced acoustic. Things to look out for are "buzzing" frets, very high action, neck whip (curve of neck towards or away from the body), and if the top is warped (obviously raised or cracked).
Happy hunting!

So I got a guitar recently and I got curious and looked at the wiring

For some reason on the volume pots the input pin is wired in parallel with ground by being soldered to the metal shell of the pots

It works and sounds nice but I don't understand this. What the fuck? Can any wiring aficionados explain why someone would do this? Why doesn't this cut signal entirely? What does it do?

>>
>>69231673
The diagram WAS how I described it

Turns out I'm just dumb though, the input was not also connected to ground, it's just shielding from the wire itself that's connected to ground while the actual signal wire comes out a bit further and into the pin itself

tl;dr ignore everything I said it makes perfect sense

The keely mod changes a lot of the components with better quality ones, also this pedal has an "ultra" switch which is always good.
While people are collecting overpriced boutique meme pedals I will be amassing a collection of modded pedals, taking it to the next level.
