Don't disrespect the spayc bays! And don't forget, you can't fake the funk or your nose is gonna grow.
Hi guys. I want to start reading "The Advancing Guitarist", but I have noticed that it is in standard notation. I can standard notation, problem is, I don't know how to transcribe it in guitar(alas, I don't know which fret to use, etc). Is there a good tutorial for it?
inb4 google it fagget
>>69192194
Sounds like a great opportunity to learn how to read music.
In general you should know your fretboard, you should know the notes on every fret by heart.
When you're dealing with standard notation on guitar you should read through the entire thing and check out the highest and lowest notes, find those on your fretboard and get a rough sense of where you'll be playing that piece.
After that it's just a matter of practice. Also practice sight reading if you have the time.
>>69192244
Thanks anon, I will keep that in mind while reading the book.
Im thinking about buying a looper pedal. Should i get a dedicated looper or am i better off buying a delay that has a looper function. Which delays/looper to consider?
>>69192283
No problem, honestly standard notation on guitar is a pain at first but it's a huge benefit once you are semi-fluent in reading it. And after that it's only a small jump to actually reading and sight reading fluently.

seriously, guitar lessons are always pointless patterns and stuff like that, I only know a few that actually focus on musicality around the guitar rather than the notes themselves.
>>69192920
Damn, that's a lot for a bass. Post it.
>>69192945

I didn't mind the tort, but that looks great as well. Very traditional. Can't wait for my Maruszczyk P bass honestly, they make maple pickguard and it looks really neat.

Also very nice. Is that ebony or rosewood?
Are 24 frets a meme? Does it really matter?
>>69193978
I just like them because it's easier to bend the 22.
I absolutely cannot play with 21 fret necks.

>>69193978
no it's not a meme you fucking mong, having two more frets completely changes the sound of your guitar

Because we did it like that in the 50s and 60s. Because it was a cheap and effective way of doing it back then.
The question you need to ask is why people still demand that we stick to 60 year old designs.
I have no clue, ask a psychologist.

Couldn't tell from the picture, and macassar ebony can actually be fairly light in colour.
>>69194288
>>69194361
Why are we still using friction pegs and non-adjustable bridges on violins and cellos? Why do classical guitars use that silly wrap-around bridge design? It's all about tradition.
>>69194544
Guitar USB cables tend to get de-synced after a couple hours of playing and you can only fix them by unplugging them and plugging them back in.
I just got a $50 Behringer interface to fix that, pic related.
>>69191920
Any fretless Bros around? I want to get into fretless again but the basses that interest me only come with rosewood fingerboards. Is that an issue long-term? I'll probably stick with flats.

21/22 frets are a meme that's been going for 70 years now
19 frets is the most you'll need, do more with less. At least that has more than 300 year history
>>69194755
Does your meme argument also apply to other instruments? Should I cut off the fingerboard on my upright bass? On my Violin? Should I rip out the highest and lowest octave on my 88-key piano?

>You're also paying premium just because they stuck his name on the guitar
Nigga, it's less than half the price of a Gibson V.
>You're also paying premium just because they stuck his name on the guitar x2
You're paying premium just because they stuck "Gibson" on the guitar.
I'd rather buy a Chinese Gibson knock off to upgrade it myself.

>>69195544
>I'd rather buy a Chinese Gibson knock off to upgrade it myself.
The name counts for a lot, especially if you ever choose to sell it on some day.
Gibson are not as good as they should be in 2016 but guitarists with your mindset spend their lives chasing Gibson guitars through copies of them and never actually getting Gibson guitars. Wrong top carves, neck width, body dimensions, headstock angle etc. Then there's resale value and everything else that comes with owning a genuine Gibbo. Fuck Epiphone and fuck copies, if you're going to get a Les Paul or a Gibson V just save up and do it the right way.
>>69195570
I did. $140, can you even fucking believe it
>>69195635
I'm not planning to sell my guitars ever though.
>Fuck Epiphone and fuck copies, if you're going to get a Les Paul or a Gibson V just save up and do it the right way
This is what people believe in the current year.
I like expensive guitars as much as anyone, but if I can find something that looks exactly like a Gibson and it's comfy to play (meaning you can feel it's not built like shit) then I'm buying it, just gonna change the hardware as soon as possible.
I'm probably never gonna have a real Gibson unless I find one used for less than $500 or if they endorse me, which is unlikely.
>>69194680
Rosewood is the most prone to wear but if you're using flats or tapewounds it's unlikely you would have to do any maintenance on the fingerboard more than once every several years. Maintainance for a few shallow divets on a fretless is a simple matter of sanding the whole thing down by half a millimeter. No big deal.
The fingerboard wear issue is mostly perpetuated by Jaco Pastorius' story, who used round steels on a rosewood board and played hard for hours every day. He is did a suboptimal diy epoxy coating on his that had to be fixed frequently.
What guitar are you CURRENTLY playing?

I have one of these fake customs and all I can say is I hope you know how to do guitar repair. I had to replace 2 frets, then level and crown the whole guitar, change out all the electronics and hardware, cut a new nut and give it a setup.
If you can do all that there's really no reason not to get one, the foundation of those guitars is solid, it's the final touches that they fuck up on.
>>69199967
>final touches
two dodgy frets isn't "final touches"
>>69199997
It's actually a really easy repair, but yeah not recommended if you're not familiar with guitar repair. All in all an Epiphone or Agile is a better buy.
>>69199967
The seller says they're made in the Epiphone factory, what I'm after is the wood and paint, really.
Tuners, nut, switch, pickups, bridge, tailpiece knobs and what not are getting replaced and the pickguard is getting removed.
I don't know how to do fretwork nor do I have the tools to do it, this >>69195697 one came with a pretty decent fretjob so I can only hope it's not too bad.
I usually leave the pots since I only use the volume but I would be getting EMGs for it, they come with their own pots for the solderless installation.
>>69199967

>>69200856
Fender Esquires are a thing you twat.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fender_Esquire
>>69200727
I use the delay moreso than the reverb. I set it to a nice subtle reverb and add just a bit of delay for solos/intros/outros. The only difference between my guitar and bass board is I remove the Bass EQ when playing guitar and I tend not to use all three RV-3s at the same time on bass cause it gets hilarously muddy.
>>69200824
Both have pretty bad sustain and the pickups aren't too hot so I wouldn't recommend either for ambient or metal. They react pretty nicely to pedals though.
The Jaguar is short scale and the neck is super small so if you got big hands you're gonna hate it, Jazzmaster neck is pretty chunky.
Honestly play both when you get a chance.

Guitars without headstocks are ugly as fuck.

Anybody have an idea how to get that lead tone at 3:48? Sounds to me like neck humbucker, a lot of mid on the amp, roll down the tone knob, and add some compression
But that's not really getting me close. Lots of fusion players have a tone like that, but it's really hard to replicate

And I bought this from a local pedal builder here in my city, I believe it's a fuzz face with a built in noise-gate/oscillator, it's hectic ass hell and super loud, the decay is hilariously glitchy.
>>69200958
there's two cases for metal where you don't need hot pickups or sustain
if you play fast, sustain has absolutely no use
if you play stoner/doom, you can get some nifty tones out of something medium output
>>69201113
I call it the holdsworth tone
I don't have a single clue as to how to replicate it, but I'm going to try since my guitar's back in action.

That fuzz looks sick, how much did you snag it for?
Also it's a guitar amp, not a bass amp, it's kind of akin to a JTM/bluesbreaker and a Bassman. Really british sounding, breaks up well and feels fucking amazing when you play it.
>>69201665
125 bucks.
Oh cool, that sounds pretty nice. I stopped making distinctions between certain guitar and bass amps when I realized Chris Squire played through a JMP Super Bass and most of my favorite solid state Acoustic/Sunn amps from the 70s/80s where the exact same circuitry with just different EQs lol.

just started playing guitar a few months ago and I have now started doing barre chords and power chords and I am finding them really difficult.
is this common?
>>69201899
ah nigga where'd ya get the grunge pedal?
https://clyp.it/3oxzkdbv I was playing with the effects and when I got this sound I had the immediate urge to play these notes, this is definitely some Mogwai song, isn't it?
>>69201936
Yep. Like most things with guitar, it comes down to hand strength and muscle memory. Keep practicing, you'll get it.
>>69202011
Dunno, but it sounds cool
>>69201958
Buddy gave it to me, he didn't want it anymore. The grunge is the black swan of my board, I don't know how to incorporate it yet. Turning the volume up in the slightest causes a lot of excess noise, and god forbid the preamp is on as well. All that aside, I like it and hope to properly use it sometime.
>>69202022
ah thanks man.
nice dubs.
>>69201936

You can also do those using a semi-barre with your ring or pinky finger if you like it better.

Holy shit I can't live without two anymore. Using one for cleans and one for dirt with a good amp, using one to mute the guitar when not playing during a song.
Moving away from too many pedals has made my playing so much better..

Berklee's Modern Method for Guitar will teach you to read standard notation. It will take incredible discipline to make it through all 3 books (let's just say it's a little dry), but it's totally doable, and you'll come out with an incredible ability to read and generally play.
>>69203100

theres some money to be made in royalty free music anon. It pays my cousins rent.
hey guys, i'm looking for a Telecaster and I was wondering if you could help me out. I played my friend's Standard Tele and I love it. I like it a lot more than his Standard Strat, so I know for sure I specifically want a Tele.
My dilemma is, i'm having trouble deciding between a Standard Tele (more specifically, the 60th anniversary edition) and the Deluxe Nashville Tele. Can someone compare the two for me? I can provide specific links if that would help
>>69203154
At the cost of your dignity.
I'd rather make cool shit than play it safe with royalty free music. Also who the fuck pays you if it's royalty free?
>>69203061
>he doesn't see the possibilities of hsh with individual on/off switches for each pickup, coil taps, and phase switches
Why are you limiting yourself, anon? :^)
>>69203100
>>69203154
I know it's boring as fuck but how do I make it more interesting? Seems like all I can do is write chord progressions.
>>69203040

>>69203201

>>69203166
I think nashvilles come with a Stratocaster middle pickup. That's it.
>>69200466
I'm going to start keeping track of these
>>69203254
so if I like the Tele sound more than the Strat sound, should I stick with two pickups?
>>69203228
Real drums would add a lot. I mean you have the baaaaaaare bones of a song. Of course it's going to sound empty.
>>69203174
who says you can't do both? Royalty free shit is easy as fuck to churn out.
People who use your music don't pay you residuals but they do pay you for the license to use your music in commercial products. Royalty free doesn't mean the music can be used for free.
>>69203325
That's up to you.
If you end up not liking the middle, you don't have to use it.
Can you name the guitar make simply by this case?
It is an OEM case.
>>69203362
Yeah I would rather real drums, but don't have access. I just don't know what to add from here. I tried adding a reverby delay-y organ arp sound but it kind of just sounded out of place. Experimented with some rhythm guitar and it kind of just cluttered up the sound. I figure I need a lead of some sort but reeeaaaalllly suck at writing melodies.
Idk I'm probably just gonna scrap this but I've scrapped like the last 3 attempts at making something good and it's frustrating.
>>69202830
I know I'm gonna get meme'd to hell and back for saying this, but a strandberg. Nothing too fancy, just 7 strings, no need for fanned frets or anything, I just really dig their headless design and that crazy neck back shape.
>>69203491
Looks like that "back of the ballsack" design from one of those Ernie Ball Music Man guitars
>>69203565
I dont think not having a lead is the issue. Vocals can serve that role.
>>69203596
Yea I was planning on having vocals, but I can't sing for shit (at least right now) and I suck at writing lyrics, and can't come up with melodies for the life of me. Idk like I said I feel like the only thing I can do well is write chord progressions.
Know of any resources where I can get better at lyrics/vocals/melodies that are actually helpful?
>>69203653
Lyrics can be whatever. Vocals takes time to make work. But I sincerely believe everyone with a little bit of musicality can make vocals work in some way. Innovation happens when you make your own limits work for you rather than when you try to surpass your own limits to become something that you are not.
Anybody here use avatar cabs, thinking about ordering one of these with two v30's for some death/black metal stuff with a 6505.
Any reverb/delay pedal recommendations for 80s cock rock?

Since you have experience with chink guitars (and probably parts too) I want to know if you have experience with chinese Floyd Rose clones, like this one here
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/i/32618595416.html
I haven't played guitar in a few months, but I have been slowly getting into the concept of modifying electric guitars more and more. I wouldn't put it on anything that is actually good, but I have been seeing a lot of cheapo strat clones and such at thrift stores around me lately, which would be an upgrade over my current electric (a first act with edgy graphics that I have owned since I started playing guitar in 4th grade).

Got one of those for the Frankenstrat I built (never mind the shitty paint job).
It's not too bad but not great either, so here's a couple tips:
If you're installing it yourself
>Be sure to line it up correctly, otherwise it will sound like shit even if it's an original FR
If you do install it correctly
>Don't expect much from it, it's not a piece of shit but you need a decent quality locking nut if you want to dive bomb, if you don't you will end up blaming the bridge and and will hate cheap Floyds forever
If you're buying a guitar with it already installed
>Take into account the locking nut thing, but don't abuse it if the guitar is second hand or you will literally break the blades
If you want to install it on a heavy use guitar, get an Original Floyd
If you want to learn to install this on a non-Floyd guitar, get the cheap version, for experience
>TL;DR Don't expect much but great for luthiers in training (such as your/myself)

i keep having this issue where the thing that the cord goes into on my guitar (i don't fucking know what it's called i'm drunk. the input jack?) keeps getting loose.
is there any way to prevent this? should i use a strap and loop the cord through it each time i play to reduce the pressure on the jack? does everyone do this? do you all tighten it with a wrench frequently?
>>69206173
Yes, tighten it
I do that because it makes cable management easier
Most people
Sometimes, I check my jacks frequently anyways
>>69206196
so when you just casually play sitting down, you wear a strap?
and what's the best tool to tighten the jack with? i'm not very...handy. i have a limited tool palette, if you will
>>69206263
Yes, I always wear a strap. I dont know if thats weird but it definitely helps me have more control over the guitar.
I just use my fingers. take off backplate, hold the jack in place with fingers, and tighten it with other hand. You can also tighten further using pliers or another tool.

Mostly rhythm acoustic chord playing with slap percussion. Good for barebones songwriting but it isn't interesting on its own and I'm making no progress worth fuck all.
I know a few blues scales but nothing like that.
No metronome, should I always use that?
>>69211800
Learn your major scales. Practice em with a metronome for sure. Don't ALWAYS use a metronome cuz you gotta ride a bike without training wheels at some point, but it is super fucking important as well.
Also don't just memorize the position of the scale on the fretboard. Learn the notes. Learn the intervals
