This is a /daily/ thread

The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

morning pals

>Nagy Feró és a Bikini - Hova Lett...
Not great. The prog influence didn't work much at all for me and songs like 'Ótyi-tyótyi - Ping-pong' were just cringeworthy. 2/5

>Pelt - Ayahuasca
Honestly I'm slightly disappointed by this. The pure drone segments were alright but tended to drag on a bit but the parts that had a bit of a folk/country influence were fucking fantastic, like the Henry Flynt-esque 'The Cuckoo' and the Fahey influenced Raga Called John (part 1 and 3 anyway). The drones on their own weren't that interesting but when they start playing over the top of them it's lovely. I don't know what to rate this really, the highs were very high but they only made up a third of the album at most. But i think the highs are high enough for me to give it a 4/5 since i did enjoy the drone segments a decent amount anyway.

>Pink Anderson - Carolina Blues Man
There's nothing that really stands out about this but I like Country Blues and he did a good enough job for me to enjoy it. It's not very emotional and he's no virtuoso but it does the job. 3+/5

>Phil Spector - Back to Mono (1959-69)
I haven't listened to all of this yet desu but I loved The Crystals already and Spector's production is nearly always great. The sound he gets on those drums is so good. As expected from a massive compilation like this there's a couple of shit songs but overall it's great pop music. 4/5 shame he's a murderer tho like

Btw listened to 2 Unfinished Music volumes. Two Virgins was Revolution 9 2.0. I dig it but it was nothing mind blowing. Just tape music with some taste and Yoko's vocals, which I actually like.

Life with Lions is much more interesting. John Lennon playing feedback guitar and blues inspired free improv wank is something absolutely surreal to me, even after hearing Ono's Plastic Ono Band. Cambridge 1969 and Mullberry are wonderful, everything in between ranges from meh to good

I don't know how I missed this last year, this is really good. I only wish he laid off the heavy effects on it because I think his compositions carry themselves pretty well on their own. Plus I think the black metal kind of stuff here is far less interesting than the psych folk elements. Apparently it's just one dude, which is impressive/discouraging if you've ever tried the solo project thing, because he's all over the map here. Sort of Murmuüre vibes. 7.5-8/10

Just finished an exam on Adolf Eichmann!

Japandroids - Post-Nothing
Surprisingly listenable, did not expect this at all, it's really fun emo, takes me right the fuck back to highschool. Will definitely relisted to this one, it's probably going to go up in the future

The Bats - Daddy's Highway
I saw the r8s on RYM and this album is pretty much universally panned by all that listened to it here, fuck all yall it's actually quite good, again, will listen to more of it because it's got this really daggy bedroom twee/shoegaze feel to it
basically I dig it
Ping @ Nyarl, listen to this, you will like it

Graham Lambkin - Salmon Run
It's really eh

The Band - The Band
Kinda dug this, although it's a bit unusual of me since I don't really fall head over heels for this type of stuff
Will relisten I don't think I got all I could out of it because I didn't listen to the lyrics with absolute dillegence.

Popul Vuh - In den Garten Pharaos
I had little patience for this, it takes 25 minutes to get good, but then it got really good and then lost me again

>Lil Ugly Mane - Mista Thug Isolation
I'm torn on this album as there are some aspects of it that really resonated with me while there were others that i didn't enjoy much at all. I really loved the chopped and screwed vaporwave style that some of the songs had. The instrumentals in general were extremely engaging and full of things to listen for with creative uses of samples throughout. I liked the jazz beats mixed with the dark tone of the whole thing. I wasn't really a fan of the rapping or lyricism at all though. It had some creative rhyming and an impressive flow, but a lot of the time it just felt flat and uninspired. This album is too long with a lot of filler that doesn't take advantage of the creative production techniques used on songs like Radiation (Lung Pollution) and Twistin. blue triangle/10

His other material is definitely worth checking out.
I feel the same way about mista thug isolation. His lyrics are obviously not meant to be taken seriously, but they still can get annoying.
I enjoy his lyricism way more on Uneven Compromise and Oblivion Access. His instrumentation is a lot harsher and noisier though.
For more of that jazzy feel, check out Third Side of Tape. Though that beast is a compilation album consisting of mostly unfinished material, it's still worth a listen.
You can always listen to Absence of Shitperson which contains the instrumentals to mista thug isolation.

Bunch of new stuff! Moving along great.

Ryoji Ikeda - Dataplex

I'll be honest and say that I have no idea what to think of this thing. It's the essence of "computer music" for sure. It's grating, unpleasant, but strangely well crafted and composed. There is a definite sense of form and function, but I definitely did not enjoy this. But I didn't hate it? I don't know man.

?????

Asobi Seksu - s/t

Cool little dream pop album, but not as good as their follow-up, Citrus. Fun j-pop influenced tracks with a touch of twee, but little to know musical substance. A good musical equivalent to Skittles, very sweet, but it hurts after a while. Would be really nice for a 15 minute EP, but the 40 minute runtime becomes really rough towards the end. Still, nice guitar and vocal work throughout.

EHH.

Ghost - Hypnotic Underworld

Awesome album. I've been a fan of Michio Kurahara's work with Boris, but this is my first Ghost album, and I really enjoyed it. The opening track, split into four, is a really engaging muscial journey, and the shorter tracks are great as well. Nice varied instrumentation and killer guitar work permeate the album, and the band really knows how to write music that doesn't get boring in the longer tracks. The track Kiseichukan Nite is a low point, probably because it's largely spoken word I only know a little Japanese. Other low points include the somewhat stunted nature of the tail end of the opener. Still, a really enjoyable listen with awesome instrumentation and composition. Check this out for sure.

GOOD.

Various - Katamari Fortissimo Damacy

Nostalgia bomb for me. This was and still is one of my favorite video games ever, and I'm not sure why I never revisited the awesome music this game had. It's just a stupidly catchy set of swing, electronic, pop, jazz, etc. All the hooks and riffs are really, really infectious. It may be nostalgia talking, but I feel like this is definitely one of the best video game soundtracks ever. Perfectly quirky.

GOOD.

>Emeralds - Does It Look Like I’m Here?

Right off the bat, this album has a great atmosphere. A nice mix of guitar and synth weave in layers to create these hypnotic, enchanting soundscapes. Most of this sounds quite a bit lot a modernized Tangerine Dream, with similar elements going on throughout the album. This whole thing is fairly relaxing, which is exactly what I like about ambient music. However, after about 40 minutes of this, it started to get a bit repetitive and blend together a bit. It sags a bit, with ideas kind of meshing together in the middle.

There’s only so much that you can do with an ambient album and this kind of ends up going nowhere at times. However, I will say “Double Helix”, “Now You See Me” and “Access Granted” are all outstanding tracks. Just wish the rest of this had remained at their level.

5/10

>The Magnetic Fields - i

Fantastic indie pop all around. Creative songwriting, nice catchy melodies and awesome instrumentation. Stephin Merritt has such a cool voice..it’s deep and baritone but often has this hint of angst/pain. In other words, it’s a style I really like in indie pop albums. I mean, he even sounds a lot like Chet Baker on “Infinitely Late at Night”. His voice also compliments the subject matter pretty well, which helps, as most of the songs either talk about love or some sort of heartbreak. The arrangement on here is also fantastic - with strings (not usually big on them but it works), banjos and even a harpsichord on “In an Operetta”.

Something about this release was really touching, I can’t exactly explain it.

8/10, though I can see myself bumping the score up in the future.

Can't blame ya, at least we can agree on the best tracks!

>The Residents - Not Available
This was quite horrifying in parts. It's like a full length version of feller filler.
There were a few elements in it that I really liked. The atmosphere of dread, the electronic beats in the background, and the soft horns coming in right at the perfect moment.
As a whole though, the vocals really turned me off and the album really meanders.
I don't want to use the criticism that it "tried too hard to be weird" but I couldn't help feeling that in parts.
It was an interesting experience, but I don't think I'll be revisiting it often.

Hey guys, I know some of you tend to know your shit when it comes to some of the type of stuff, so I was wondering are there like more albums that are legit examples of multicultural hybridization?

Miles Davis - On The Corner
Don Cherry - Eternal Rhythm
The meme Bulgarian Voices/Tuvan Throat Singing album - Fly, Fly My Sadness
maybe Exuma - s/t counts?
maybe some Fahey counts?

These are all I can think of. There's some Beatles songs, too that actually hybridize the different styles rather than just assimilate, but it's just a couple songs. Was looking for more examples outside just a few songs. Also no world music cheese please.

>>69139835
If you wanna talk about being sheer weird, There Goes Concorde Again probably takes it for post-punk. I initially got it recced to me by Talking Cat Bob asking him is there's something more ridiculous than that Milk From Cheltenham album in the post-punk flowchart. It's not bad, but you just have to be prepared for it.

It was the album that kinda inspired me to make the post because it's not just using different instruments, but doing legitimately non-jazz stuff that comes with those instruments and putting it together with jazz that I really like about the album.

>>69142190
Dataplex approaches sound design in this really weird way where the music, especially in the first half which starts at ridiculously high frequencies then gets lower as the album goes on, feels like it doesn't exist. So there's still stuff going on in the first half, but we can't register it. Like Schrodinger's Cat of music.

done!

Geraldo Pino - Heavy Heavy Heavy (2005)
>afrobeat, afro-funk

Kinda disappointing, but in no way bad. The best thing this comp has going for it is its charisma. Pino is an inherently charismatic frontman, he's very reminiscent of James Brown in how his presence is always felt with little grunts or screams, no matter how little he actually flat-out sings. His backing band is good, but sometimes a bit too sterile to carry the weight of Pino's vocals. The synths are sometimes flat-out poor, they have absolutely no weight to them, and the thinness of them often makes them come off as cheesy. Wonderful percussion, however, and it's still a pretty damn enjoyable record, but not nearly as good as it could be.

3.0-

Prophet Posse - Body Parts (1998)
>memphis rap

A big hodgepodge of every single major memphis rap figure of the '90s, and it's about as unfocused and scattershot as you'd expect. The Triple 6 and co. tracks are pretty much consistently great. Nothing out of this world, and nothing that hasn't been explored to better effect on their own records, but the wonderful, DJ Paul-produced sound is still here in spades, and all the MCs are in top form. Everything not by the Triple 6 camp is just weak, judged alone and in comparison with the Triple 6 tracks. These tracks have a more typical southern sound, the production isn't memorable at all, and the MCs sound more like Eminem or the Insane Clown Posse than Lord Infamous or Koopsta. A total fucking mess, but the Triple 6 tracks alone are wonderful, as always.

cuz there's a lot of pop music with some heavily ethnic flavor like Goat, Psalters, that one Gang Gang Dance album, a lot of Folk Metal and the like obviously, a lot of music from non-western countries has probably been influenced by colonialism if not migrations n stuff even before that but i get what you want so

>Jandek - Glasgow Monday

For the third performance, Sterling Smith decides that the trio (Smith, Nielson and Youngs) is ready for something else. So here we have it: Sterling Smith on piano, Richard Youngs on double bass and Alex Nielson on bowed (!) percussion. All three performing a single suite piece titled “The Cell”.

It is a peaceful piece. Rep opens up each section of the piece with a similar theme and plays a listenable piano section, similar to what will be occurring on the big piano boxsets. Youngs’ bowed double bass drones over the smooth piano, while Neilson just bows every single drum piece he has. Alex plays chimes from time to time and just adds a slight edge to the repetition of Jandek.

Smith’s vocal performance is more of a spoken word one, rather than his howling from the previous efforts. The lyrical centre of the piece is the starting line “what do I have” that reoccurs on almost all of the parts. I personally think that the theme of The Cell is ageing. He constantly keeps talking about growing up and how different life becomes, not only for people but for all the living. I didn’t find any line that had the classic Jandek taste, but there were a few good ones.

The Cell sounds very plain in my opinion. It is a pleasant listen and I do appreciate the dynamic silences between the sections, but overall I think it is not worthy of its length. I know that they eventually got it right on “Where Do You Go From Here? “, so this show was not in vain.

5+/10 (plus for Nielson)

Thinking any MBV release but Loveless is their best is pretty wrong desu

I don't like the majority of Shoegaze with the exceptions of some albums.
Noise Rock is infinitively better than Noise Pop.

I regret matching up Jangle and Tuco because both of these records were *so* good. Hope the rest of the tourney continues to be this enjoyable.

>Bob Dylan - The Bootleg Series 4: The “Royal Albert Concert”

Two sides of a coin here, as Dylan performs acoustic tracks by himself on disc 1 and performs electronic cuts with The Band on disc 2. The first half is pretty much just extended versions of his famous acoustic tracks, remixed in typical Dylan fashion - with extra harmonica solos, etc and drawn out vocals. These cuts are nice, and the audience pretty much unanimously loves these. However, I’m not sure if they’re that much better than the studio versions.

Side 2 though - good lord! The Band jams the fuck out, adding some gnarly drumming and some groovy solos on the piano and guitar. And the organ on here is just ridiculous. Something about it works so well with the rest of the band and gives this thing a very soulful, psychedelic feel. The audience is a little bit more hostile, heckling him at times and even providing the famous “JUDAS!” line. Kind of enjoyed the rowdiness of the fans a bit more honestly. And this recording somehow makes “Ballad of A Thin Man” - among my favorite Dylan tracks - way way better.

Side 2 is just incredible all the way through and definitely one of the best live recordings I’ve heard. But side 1 is just average and adds a whole 45 minutes to the runtime, which brings this down a little. If it were just side 2, it might be approaching 9-10 territory honestly.

>Lou Donaldson - Blues Walk

Riiight up my alley as far as jazz goes. There’s a bit of a bluesy flair to this one but it alternates between a few styles. There’s subtle moments, furious hard bop songs and even gets close to soul jazz at times. All throughout this record, there’s this little twinge of latin/afro-cuban jazz (or something along those lines) influence that doesn’t feel forced or overwhelming. And I’m pretty much always a fan of that style.

All these subtle influences mesh incredibly well, with nice interplay between the musicians - most of whom I’ve honestly never heard of. The drumming in particular is very cool, with both traditional jazz drumming and some congas featured on a number of the tracks (love the solo on “Move”). While this isn’t the most ambitious or experimental record, it’s incredibly entertaining for its style. This whole record has a cozy, upbeat atmosphere and sometimes that’s exactly what I want. Short, sweet and thoroughly enjoyable.

Simon & Garfunkel - Wednesday Morning, 3 AM (1964)
>folk pop, contemporary folk

The duo's typical prettiness is here in spades, but the high density of covers and the lack of variation in the sound makes it a very inconsequential, often boring listen. The originals are obviously the best songs here, "The Sounds of Silence" is great as always, and the title track is a great early excursion into Simon's character-based songwriting style, but covers of traditional songs and Dylan's "The Times They Are a-Changin'" are just poor, their sound saps all the energy and passion out of the songs and the songwriting in turn does their sound no favors. It's decent enough, but really plain and dull.

2.0

David Bowie - Station to Station (1976)
>art rock

The sterile-cocaine-kraut-fuck here is exceptional, my god. "Station to Station", "Golden Years", and "Stay" all rank among Bowie's best tracks, for my money. They take the soul out of funk, which sounds like an awful thing, but Bowie takes the normally full of life genre and transforms it into an anxious, edgy, cocaine-fueled style that's so purely Bowie. The remaining tracks are decent, but they focus more on a blue-eyed soul style that doesn't mesh well with the sound Bowie was going for here. Soul needs soul, funk can do without it. They're all still decent, mainly since Bowie's vocals can anchor any track no matter how bad, but the funk tracks blow them out of the water. Honestly, it might be my least favorite Bowie album I've heard so far, but that stands as a testament to the quality of the man's body of work more than anything else.

why do all the rym reviews call this "experimental"? not that it's necessarily conventional, but it's not that out there either. there are some good songs and a few clunkers, but overall it's pretty good.
