It's time to post memes under the guise of musical discussion!

The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

Model 500 - Classics (1993)
>detroit techno

Focuses too much on the electro side of detroit techno that I don't care for too much. Tracks like "The Chase (Smooth Remix)" encapsule this sound and everything I don't like about it, it's kinda enjoyably cheesy at best and downright irritatingly goofy at worst, and it contrasts poorly with the cold, sci-fi aesthetic Atkins goes for on most of this album. There are some bangers on this thing, though. The bass here is constantly great, and the non-remixed tracks are generally concise, to the point, and wonderful, for the most part. The remixes focus a bit too much on the electro sound and they often run for too long, dragging the whole comp down, which is a shame because the purely original tracks are wonderful.

2.5+

DJ Paul & Lord Infamous - Come With Me 2 Hell Part 2 (1995)
>memphis rap, gangsta rap

The best tracks here ("Tear da Club Up (Original)" and "Ridin' n da Chevy Pt. 2") are rendered almost entirely obsolete by the existence of the Underground Vol. 1 comp, and the memphis aesthetic can wear thin on longer tapes, but it's got that dark, demonic, infernal sound that I love so damn much. Both Paul and Infamous are masters of their respective fields. Paul's beats are minimal yet still spooky and ominous to the core, and Infamous has one of the greatest, fastest flows in hip hop history, the heavy use of triplets in his bars is astounding. The features are great as well, the presence of Gangsta Boo on any album is always welcome. Like I said, too long and it's kinda obsolete, but a damn great listen nonetheless.

Perrey-Kingsley - The In Sound From Way Out! (1966)
>space age pop, electronic

Is Gershon Kingsley a bad influence on Jean-Jacques Perrey? The cheese here isn't nearly as enjoyable as the cheese on The Amazing New Electronic Pop Sound of..., and I think the problem lies within this album's heavy emphasis on acoustic instruments rather than synthesizers. It never really embraces an acoustic sound or an electronic sound, it's stuck in something of a purgatory. It oftentimes excels in the melodic department, but the little electronic bleeps and bloops and sound effects that make Perrey's solo work so memorable and enjoyable detracts from the songs rather than adding to them, they're just irritating, as sad as it makes me to say that. A cute little album at times, but it's more often than not totally inconsequential and even flat-out irritating.

Still working on some writeups for the better albums but I'll bump with a few quick reviews.

[1/2]

>PJ Harvey - Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea

Pretty much a watered down, mellower version of her earlier albums imo. Nice atmosphere, solid ideas… but doesn’t really go anywhere original. Thom Yorke’s guest spots are pretty solid and work surprisingly well on here too. Fairly enjoyable but I’d rather just listen to a different album.

3.0-/5

>Cyne - Evolution Fight

Hmmm, this is right up my alley. Everything that guarantees I’ll enjoy a hip-hop release is on here honestly. Jazzy beats, solid flows from the MCs and a little bit of philosophical lyricism. The production in particular is awesome, with some of the coolest, jazziest beats I’ve heard in awhile. I loved a couple of the songs in the middle stretch - “Haze”, “Rousseau” and “Automation”. Reminds me a lot of Cunninlynguists, both in the production style and the subject matter. Lyrically, it can get a bit preachy at times (“Growing”, "Arrow Of God"), as they get into some spiritual topics but the beats make up for that and those moments aren't too frequent anyway.

s/o to Jimmy Jazz for this one

[2/2]

>Saba - The Bucket List Project

Really liked Comfortzone and this is really just more of the same - a very mellow and jazzy project with some decent raps. It gets a bit poppy at times but I like how positive Saba stays for a majority of this project. All the beats are upbeat and Saba’s easy-going, sing-songy flow works quite well over them. Some solid features from Twista, Noname and Jean Deaux. The concept is a bit corny - with a lot of rappers providing their “bucket list” between raps - but it isn’t too much of a downside honestly. The world could always use more positivity in music, imo and it’s nice to hear another one of these “happy” Chicago projects. Pretty solid overall.

3.0/5

>The Coup - Genocide & Juice

Pleasantly surprised by this project honestly. Aside from “My Favorite Mutiny”, which my old roommate used to play *all* the time, I’d never heard anything from The Coup. The beats are super funky and provided by a band, which gives them a more organic feel - quite similar to the Roots but with a more west coast flair. The raps are fairly political/socially conscious and often presented in a somewhat lighthearted/joking manner. “Pimps” is a good example of their style - as they add in a little comedy skit where these pompous white yacht club members start impersonating The Coup and call rap “tribal”, etc. It’s a nice mix of parody and social consciousness, which works quite well. Trails off a bit toward the end but I enjoyed this… definitely checking out their follow up, Steal This Album soon.

“Hipster” is a term co-opted for use as a meaningless pejorative in order to vaguely call someone else’s authenticity into question and, by extension, claim authenticity for yourself.

It serves no conversational function and imparts no information, save for indicating the opinions and preferences of the speaker.

Meanwhile, a market myth has sprung up around the term, as well as a cultural bogeyman consisting of elusive white 20-somethings who wear certain clothes (but no one will agree on what), listen to certain music (no one can agree on this either), and act a certain way (you’ve probably sensed the pattern on your own).

You can’t define what “that kind of behavior or fashion or lifestyle” actually is, nor will you ever be able to. That’s because you don’t use “hipster” to describe an actual group of people, but to describe a fictional stereotype that is an outlet for literally anything that annoys you.

The twist, of course, is that if it weren’t for your own insecurities, nothing that a “hipster” could do or wear would ever affect you emotionally. But you are insecure about your own authenticity - “Do I wear what I wear because I want to? Do I listen to my music because I truly like it? I’m certainly not like those filthy hipsters!” - so you project those feelings.

Suffice it to say, no one self-identifies as a hipster; the term is always applied to an Other, to separate the authentic Us from the inauthentic, “ironic” Them.

tl;dr: if you believe hipsters exist, you are a plebeian.

Amancio d'Silva - Integration [1969]
>Jazz, Fusion

Great jazz album. The overall sound changes quite a bit between songs, keeping the album fresh and exciting.
The longer tracks occasionally lack direction but this is supplemented with great musicianship.
The horns aren't quite as strong as d'Silva's guitar playing, but they still fill the space in the record quite well.
The bass and drums are killer and consistently drive the album forward.
Definitely makes an effort to be more 'jazz' than 'fusion' which I can appreciate.

Nana Vasconcelos - Saudades
>Avant-Folk, Modern Classical, Brazilian Music

This album is certainly unique. Mixing folk, classical, brazilian and chamber music, this oddbal ECM entry is certainly not drawing between the lines in the scope of the label.
The instruments, some that I can't identify combine with the classical composition style to create an immersive atmosphere.
The pieces progress beautifully, often building on and repeating ideas in a constructive and pleasing way.
Despite being mostly long pieces, they never seem to overstay their welcome, even with repeated solo instrumentation, evidenced in the first near-side-spanning track.
My only complaint is that the string overlays seem a little too straightforward and don't compliment the music as well as I'd like it to.
Fantastic album, though, and a must for fans of genre-blending compositions.

8.5 /10 (likely to be raised in the future)

How's it goin' /daily/? Bumping with a few more reviews.

>Townes Van Zandt - Our Mother The Mountain

Not quite as incredible as his s/t but this dude is clearly an awesome songwriter. Most of the songs on here have the same crushing topics as his s/t but they’re often accompanied by orchestral elements. At times, the strings, etc really add to the atmosphere… but there’s a few moments when it detracts from the mood of this whole thing. I think a more minimalist approach suits his style a lot better. Still very very solid though.

3.5/5

>BB King - Live At The Regal

I can’t honestly think of much to critique on this album. His singing is passionate and the guitar work is just so catchy. The songs are classic blues performed in an electronic set, which works quite well. I guess to a blues traditionalist (which I'm clearly not), this could come off as too glossy but I think it’s a nice middle ground between a classic sound and early rock. Short and sweet, I really enjoyed this listen.

4.0/5

>Low - I Could Live In Hope

This is some pretty soul-crushing shit but man it’s so good. The atmosphere is devastatingly dark, fueled by these slow-burning, lethargic tracks. If you slowed down Galaxie 500 and took out all the fun elements, while keeping the dreamy elements, this is basically what you’d get. I’ve started to enjoy the darker side of shoegaze a bit more recently and this is a great example of what a band can accomplish with this style.

>Common - Black America Again

Though he gets the unfortunate reputation as a “boring” rapper, Common has actually grown to become one of my favorite MCs. To many, he may seem bland and not very engaging, but I think he comes off as earnest and straightforward. Doesn’t work all the time but I pretty much always respect it. About 25 years into his career, he continues to shine here. The beats are pretty mellow, the features are fairly soulful and Common is surprisingly entertaining on the mic. As you’d expect from the title, this is fairly political in nature and that fits in well with his other albums/other recent releases. There’s a few duds in the middle and it’s a bit poppier than it should be but all in all, it’s quite impressive to hear a bit of a resurgence from Com this far into his career.

3.0/5

>Xzibit - Restless

X is still a great, charismatic MC but the beats on here are a bit weak compared to 40 Dayz & 40 Nights. The production feels like classic 2000s but not in a good way - they sound a bit flat and almost poppy at times… I’m not really sure what I didn’t like about them. Feels like Dr Dre at a bit of a weak point in his career or something. Regardless, Xzibit still still brings it on the mic, with some decent raps and the features are all pretty solid. I liked his previous album a lot better though.

Perfect From Now On vs The Perfect Prescription

Perfect From Now On is basically how indie rock should be done. Not only there's a perfect attention to details (for example, Stop the Show is divided in two exact halves, or, the lyrics spread across the record reference eachother), there isn't a single dead or boring moment on the whole album. Each song is divided in various movements/vignettes so it always feels fresh - there's so many good things to say, but all I'll let through for now is that the second half of Kicked It In The Sun is godly and among my favourite moments in music. Monumental record.

The Perfect Prescription is instead a take on psych rock done in the 90's. Not much to talk about, somewhat funny lyrics, the songs are static and droney, and Feel So Good is a nice song. The rest is yes, listenable, but in no way remarkable.

>Spacemen 3 - The Perfect Prescription
This was amazing. Quite often are albums able to make me feel emotionally sad, but it's rare for one to have my grinning ear to ear as i listen to it. The album is just so full of warmth throughout that somehow transcends the simple repetitive melodies. The album closes with call the doctor which is a stark contrast to the rest of the album tonally while still retaining the warm and hazy tone. It's one of the best songs i've heard in a long time. I listened to the version of this album with the two bonus tracks and enjoyed both of them as well. Rollercoaster has a not so subtle message thats telling you to take psychedelic drugs before dissolving itself into psych rock excess. The final song continues with this except its 11 minutes of shimmering guitars floating around both ears. purple star/10

Elecktroids - Elektroworld (1995)
>electro

It doesn't nearly reach the heights of side project Drexciya's hypnotic work, but it's okay in its own right. It relies on the same sound /far/ too much and there's little enough variation to the point where it becomes a big problem. It's pretty good in a kind of kitschy way, and it certainly sounds like a modern Kraftwerk, which I'm sure was the intention, but I don't like this sound that much (as I mentioned in the Model 500 write-up) and the repetition here is awful for how long it is. Enjoyable enough.

2.0+

Controlled Bleeding - Knees and Bones (1985)
>power electronic, noise

Really cool stuff, it's so much more subtle than most power electronics I've heard and it works very well. There's nothing Whitehouse or Grim-esque about the sound here, it's very sparse, subtle, and even downright quiet and tasteful at times. The more quiet moments work very well in leading into the abrasive, harsh sounds. There's a large emphasis on dynamics here that's lost on most noise/power electronics albums. It does meander too much, and some sounds and motifs are used to the point of irritation, but this is among the best noise I've ever heard.

3.0

Peter Kowald - Was da ist (1995)
>free improvisation

Some chart overlap here, this guy was the bassist on Globe Unity 67 & 70. He also did bass work on Machine Gun, so he's probably got automatic cred with nearly every single person here. His foray into pure free improvisation is spotty but it sometimes works. It's unique as Kowald's bass is the only instrument that appears on this album, save for some vocal work on the bookend tracks. He does some great work with the instrument, but it's not enough to carry a 72-minute long album, it gets stale by the end. The throat singing on the closer makes me want a throat singing album with Kowald's bass work, but here he just gives us some straight-up bass improv. A good sound and a good technique, but not good enough to carry a whole album.

>>
Sonic Youth - A Thousand Leaves
Occasionally excellent, Hits for Sunshine is the best track by far. They don't ever really fly off the handle as before, which is a bit disappointing because it all ends up kinda flat overall, still enjoyable, but flat

Crass - Feeding of the 5000
Not as immediately great as Penis Envy, some of the opinions expressed are questionable at best (especially the first track, which ascribes blame for the Holocaust and the horrors of WWI on Christianity, which is so historically inaccurate that it might as well be a Mel Gibson feature; but whatever, it's a single line in a song)
Overall I can get behind the wonky pacifistic discourse that they espouse but they could have spent a while working through their songs first.

John Fahey - The Great San Bernardino Oil Slick
This was a joy to listen to, John Fahey comes off as really charismatic when he talks, he's pretty funny also. It's great but I don't really have that much to say about it.

>Mavis Staples - Livin' On A High Note (2016)
Mavis Staples has a nice, grandmotherly voice, but that shouldn't fool you: she still has lots of energy. This album is much more uplifting than the EP released last year, and desu I feel like the darker atmosphere fits her style much better. There are lots of good hooks on here, but they can't carry the songs on their own. I don't really dig the acoustic guitar and the songwriting is somewhat boring. 5/10

>Talking Heads - More Songs About Buildings And Food (1978)
Much more upbeat than their debut, this album is packed with quirky guitar playing and moving rythms. David Byrne sounds manic as always, it's no wonder I love this. It lacks a bit of the claustrophobic atmosphere that Fear Of Music has or the afrobeat influences on Remain In Light to truly make it a masterpiece, but it's still fantastic (also, the last 2 tracks were not that good desu). 8/10

>>
>>69112722
forgot this:
>Saul Williams - Martyr Loser King (2016)
The hooks are clumsy (especially the lyrics are a clusterfuck throughout the whole album, if you want to do a concept album about hacking please don't let it sound like the guy in a hoody in front of a black and green screen cliche) and I know Saul can rap and sing, but he definitely doesn't show it on here. The whole album sounds like a conspiracy theory, and not a plausible one. I liked Amethyst Rock star for its imagery, but 15 years later there isn't much left of that. The Bear/Coltan as Cotton is probably one of the worst songs I heard in 2016. The production is decent for the most part, but that's not enough to save this. 2/10

The Sonny Criss Orchestra - Sonny's Dream (Birth of the New Cool)

Yo, this album is fire. The individual playing isn't all that incredible, but the compositional style and combined sound is nothing short of breathtaking.
Unique and captivating, this sets a high bar for a big band aesthetic in an avantgarde jazz band.

8.5+ /10

(on a side note, an 8.5+ is now decidedly my highest score for these charts, as 4.5-5's require repeated listening to elevate their level)
>>
Miles Davis - Sketches of Spain
Was surprised that this album took on such an orchestral feel; it's very different to the Miles Davis I'm familiar with. it sounds kinda like a soundtrack to a spaghetti western.
I find it drags a little in comparison to his other stuff, it not as grounded either, but the change in pace was appreciated.

Max Roach - We Insist!
Really good.
Kinda liked the symbolism of the sounds in parts, where the sounds made by say, the tambourine on the first track is supposed to represent the clanging of chains (that's brilliant symbolism IMHO)

Fela Kuti - Gentleman
Not as enthusiastic towards this as I have been in the past. Sorrow Tears and Blood and Zombie are far better albums in my opinion... It's still quite good, although it doesn't have those killer hooks as I have come to expect out of him, will relisten, maybe I'm being too harsh

Tim Buckley - Lorca
ok, it's fine, not as great as some of his earlier stuff, but it's got it's moments, especially liked the track "I had a talk with my woman" it's the definite highlight of the album

what next?

>The album is just so full of warmth throughout that somehow transcends the simple repetitive melodies.
Nice. i think this is one of those bands that you either get or you don't, it is all really simple and repetitive but there's something about it that just feels great.

And check out Playing With Fire or Sound of Confusion next. Playing with Fire if you want more of the spaced out stuff and Sound of Confusion if you want more of the fuzzy droning guitar riffs. Recurring is worth checking out if you like them too but it's a bit weird since they hated each other by that stage, so one side is J Spaceman and the other is written by Sonic Boom. Also check out Dreamweapon if you're okay with the repetition being taken to an extreme with 10+ min songs with one 45 min long.

RIP FLAC listeners basically
i really hate how we lost a significant amount of music that probably not uploaded anywhere else ah fuck im sad
i never got to use it really
>>
>>69117196

I didn't really use it much because my internet is ass, but it was good for finding rips of things I cared about in half-decent quality. I was planning on eventually trying to get into avant-meme trackers like KG so knowing the option was there was nice as well. It still sucks, a lot of people relied on it and their community was home to people who had homemade rips of rare releases from little known music scenes that might not even be documented on the internet anywhere else.

French police apparently raided a place and took their shit, so they nuked all their data as a last defense. Even if nothing comes of the arrest, there's really no turning back.

I think it might be wise to hold onto any rare or obscure music you have now and immediately snag anything that seems interesting, it feels like piracy is going to be very difficult in coming years. Tiny specialty trackers will probably always be around but they're only going to get harder to get into after the sudden and aggressive moves made recently.

>>69117441

It's a real shame, private trackers are some of the last bastions for art that is tangled up in red tape forever.

>french police apparently raided a place and took their shit

goddamn it France what.cd was made up of some of the least nochill people in the world.
>>
>>69117537

Waffles died too

rutracker still seems fine to me, some people say that it might not last much longer due to Russia becoming increasingly aggressive towards piracy

Someone will probably make a new tracker that serves the same purpose of wcd, but it'll be harder to get into. All the established wcd members (forum users, notable sharers, powerusers, etc.) will probably be contacted to be the first to join before having a very brief open signup window; you should keep an eye out on /g/'s private tracker general.

Some lesser known music trackers will probably have limited open spots this week for open signup; again, keep an eye out on /g/'s private tracker general.

slsk will probably be around for at least another decade, there's really no way to stop it without going totally Draconian.

Russia has recently been forcing ISPs to block access to a bunch of trackers; people who care just get a proxy. They haven't been making aggressive moves to shut down media trackers yet, though they have been going against porn for a long time. People are afraid the Russian government might suddenly snap and take down everything at once, because there's generally no warning signs before the police make a move because they don't want tracker owners to get a chance to escape. Places like the piratebay manage to survive because the owners keep running away to places where nobody gives a shit about piracy.

KG is Karagarga, a fairly elitist arthouse tracker that is invite only and has extremely difficult standards to maintain. A lot of famous underground directors upload their own work there, making it one of the only places to watch it outside film festivals. There's also a fansub community. I think it also has a non-film section dedicated to books about filmmaking, stock noises, miscellaneous film software, and weird music that's not on ubuweb.

There's Cinematik and SecretCinema that also specialize in artsy movies, but their selection is apparently worse. The trackers dedicated to esoterica are notable for being pretty memey as well.

It really is a tragedy. It was one of the largest collections of music in human history, yet still managed to keep a serious quality standard. It had a passionate community of generous and knowledgeable people who wanted to share their favorites, many of which put in painstaking effort towards building easy ways for people to get into genres or scenes they thought deserved attention.

It's a huge loss. Shitposting about people being cucked aside, I don't know how anyone could be happy with it.

If a successor comes up soon, I'm going to try and help out. If I hear about any interesting happenings I'll post about it here.

Cassetteboy - The Parker Tapes (2002)
>plunderphonics

Very immature and silly, but it's incredibly fun to listen to and the way all the samples are cut together is really impressive. Right from the beginning, when Bowie's "Space Oddity" is edited to say "for here I am shitting in a tin can", the mood is completely set. The most common production technique here is picking certain words from famous songs and splicing them together to create humorous sentences, or repeating the same word from different songs ad nauseum to create a really hypnotic, repetitive effect. It seems like it shouldn't work but it does, it's really funny in a really stupid way, and the presence of hip hop breaks shakes things up often. Far too long, and sometimes the humor is a bit groan-worthy, but an interesting and fun listen overall.

3.0

also, "Dogs Dogs Dogs Dogs Oh Yeah Dogs" invents the whole "bork" meme with the pitch-shifted dog barks singing "Perfect Day".

Also, I thought Still Brazy was really solid but not as good as My Krazy Life. For some reason I liked Mustard's production on his debut a little better. Plus a few of the more political songs (FDT, Blacks and Browns) felt a bit cheesy to me.

Pretty solid, definitely one of the more entertaining albums of 2016 imo. I think Atrocity Exhibition may be my favorite hip-hop album of the year, though Konnichiwa is probably #2

Richard and Linda Thompson - Shoot Out the Lights
Man this sucks, it's a real shame because their debut is pretty good, not real great to find out that their music eventually devolved into bland rock

Refused - Shape of Punk to Come
I'll admit I didn't think that I would like this at first, but it's got some really cool sections in it

Bad Brains - Bad Brains
Never been the greatest fan of reggae, so I was skeptical of a hybrid anarcho punk album from the get-go... This album didn't really impress me that much, I think it's certainly got it's moments, but it's overall really overrated.
There's a bit of tonal inconsistency in the music... I know it's intentional so that people will chill the fuck out but it feels like a bit of a gimmick when they slow right the fuck down to play the reggae bits

The Smiths - Hatful of Hollow
The Smiths might be the most overrated band on the face of the Earth
It's not terrible, but it doesn't exactly make me cram my pants
