pedal steels are cool but learning how to play them seems like a goddamn nightmare

this guy does a pretty good job of explaining the gist of it. It's the adjustments you do with the pedals that make it so crazy.

>>69126925
i don't doubt it

ive watched some youtubes on how they work and it's just batshit. i don't know how they get used to the thinking process behind it, that seems like the hardest part, you press down a pedal and it changes the entire layout. and you can press two at the same time for different strings.... and there's also a lever system on the sides of your knees that you can also manipulate and that changes the layout even more

Now that you mention it, he's the only pedal steel player I know of too.

I've seen him live a few times and he's always killed it. At one point during one of those shows, they started letting anyone from the audience who wanted to (it was a fairly small venue) come up on stage and play lead guitar while the rest of them jammed out. Easily one of the coolest moments I've ever seen at a show before.
>>
>>69127522
I've done it several times with nothing but success. If you can, play one in a store to make sure you like it, then watch eBay like a hawk and make your move on a deal.

Your mileage may vary, but it's worked well for me every time and I've saved a lot of money this way.

what? you realize after you add in pedals the guitar is almost unrecognizable. without pedals, however, the tone of that gretsch is on point along with the neck. feels just right

You're only vaguely right about the pedals/guitar bit as well. Someone with untrained ears you won't be able to the hear the difference between one guitar and the other with fuzz. If you can't tell the difference between a LP and a Strat through a Chorus though, you're literally retarded.

Fender Pawn Shop Mustang Bass and an Ampeg PF500/PF115HE is what I use mostly

Guitar rig is a Epiphone Casino and either a Vox AC4 or Marshall MOSFET 100 Reverb Twin

Have more guitars (actually 2 better guitars but I stopped playing metal much) and a few effects, but don't really use them because I don't have the space in my room. And I paid for all of it; it's called having a job, and playing for a long time, rather then blowing all your savings on bottom range junk and then paying for repairs every 6 months
>>
Looking into getting a 15-25W bass ampm which one should I get?
>>
>>69129161
>paying for repairs every 6 months
i literally set this guitar up 2 years ago and haven't done anything but a truss adjustment of my own

my friend who does play bars and clubs has a nice orange head and cab i can play on, and i recognize there's more body in the tone, but i can't even play my 35RT at half volume in my residential neighborhood of LA

maybe in many years when I have no other hobbies and solid living I can see a tube amp but there's really not justification I can think of for having one. it's opposite of ideal. they're larger and i won't even be able to enjoy what makes a tube amp better.

ideal is mobile and delivers the right tone.

i did see an orange tiny terror built into the amp the other day but it is still overkill.

and i have enough leftover cash to keep my cocaine and chubby asian hooker habit flowing
>>
>>69129161

How much of an arm flailing retard do you have to be to repair a guitar every six month. Mine's garbage and I haven't paid for a single repair.
>>
PLS someone answer this. I've been playing guitar for 6 months now and although I'm okay I'm having problems picking up on something I keep noticing people forming chords to play melodies but I have no idea why people do this what is the purpose of this how can I start picking up on it and incorporate it into my playing pls respond my boipucci is aching for an answer.
>>
>>69129504

like how to make chords or why epople use chords?
>>
>>69129375
Shit gear needs setups and breaks more often because cheaper materials. Not every 6 months necessarily, but more often then something good. Most cheap gear is shit, most good gear costs more. Not always, because >Gibson, but generally.
>>
>>69129375
>>
>>69129550
Like when I see people playing their fingers are set in specific positions to play notes not chords but like actually picking notes.
>>
>>69129555
I disagree with this. Shit i have a cheap "hondo" fender knockoff that still works from 10+ years ago. Based on post trail you played metal at some point. I think ill stick to his idea you were just being an arm flailing retard

>>69129683
Personally I really like the DS-2 it's pretty nice.
>>
>>69129366
>but i can't even play my 35RT at half volume in my residential neighborhood of LA
Exactly; it's 35 watts, which is not really enough to play with drummer, but too much to play in a bedroom. You can get ~5watt tube combos that generally have attenuators to lower them down to 1 or 2 watts. Probably costs the same amount as well. Would fit perfectly in a room (still not really enough to play with a drummer) and is equally portable and likely sounds alot better. Specifically the AC4 which is ok, but moddable into pretty decent amp.

Either way, if that's you idea of 'ideal' you lack ambition.

>>69129583
>arm flailing retard
>anecdotal evidence
Yeah, nah your a dumb cunt. And I didn't say all cheap gear is shit, I said most of it is.

Also some Hondo's were MIJ, I think made in the same factory as Charvel/Jacksons (so have fun with your offcut spiky guitar lad). MIJ is generally a pretty good indicator of quality regardless of price.
>>
>>69129709
I'll have a looksies at it, cheers guv.
>>
>>69129714
Wtf i use that 35rt with drummers now wtf are you on about

You can try to justify buying all that shit, you def needed it :^)
>>
>>69129773
A full band as well? What do you play?
>>
>>69129555
>Shit gear needs setups
setups are free if you can do them, which takes one afternoon to learn and about €10 worth of tools
>breaks more often
the only part that broke on mine was the jack output, which I resoldered after buying an iron.
I also broke the nut once, not because it was shit but because the guitar fell.
I've also moved it countless times in an unpadded gigbag, and it fell a few times.
I've spent a grand total of €35 on spare parts/tools, less than a setup at a guitar store. There's no way you should need repairs every six months playing normally.

>>69129714
>35 watts, which is not really enough to play with drummer
wew, my amp must be magical because I can play with a drummer and a bassist only using 20w.
>>
>>69129828
Typically 2-3. Most of what i play is rhythm and lead, rarely separate into two guitars. Green Rhino is plenty of boost for me since my only real competition at mid to high freq. is whoever is drumming
>>
>>69129867
I was working off the idea that /gg/ has no idea how to intonate a guitar, let alone use a soldering iron. Or buy a tuner, because these threads are full of poorfags.

Also 20 watts tube or SS? If you can get an audible clean tone, out of a SS amp with 2 guitars, bass and drummer, you might actually have a magical amp.
>>
>>69129912
>Also 20 watts tube or SS? If you can get an audible clean tone, out of a SS amp with 2 guitars, bass and drummer, you might actually have a magical amp.
Are you genuinely retarded? Not every drummer plays like they hate their drum kit, not every practice space is enormous. I can work with a 5W SS amp on bass, and yes I can play with a drummer.

>If you can get an audible clean tone, out of a SS amp with 2 guitars, bass and drummer, you might actually have a magical amp.
I actually do. SS poweramps don't have to deal with any breakup, so I can stay as clean as I want.
>>
>>69126864
How stupid is it to put a bass bridge and a new nut (for the 4 bass strings) on a guitar? For a super short scale bass essentially. Can a guitar neck/truss rod even deal with the higher tension?
>>
>>69130013
No, it can't.
What are you even trying to achieve..? Long scale too much for your infant hands?
>>
>>69129938
>5W SS amp on bass

>>69129976
What amp is it? Most cheap SS's I've used start to sound weird when you turn them up with low gain.

>>
>>69130013
>>69130046
I just checked, tension isn't much higher than guitar strings (19lbs per string) at that scale length and with less strings the overall tension would be lower.
I just have a cheap guitar and a bass bridge lying around.
>>
>>69130013
it's extremely fucking stupid
the intonation's never going to be quite right, it'll be muddy as hell in the low register too, and you'll need a stupidly thick string gauge in order to not play a pack of wet spaghettis
basically if you want to waste a lot of time and money putting together a pile of shit, go for it.
>>
>>69130061
>Bullshit
It's a bit louder than my 3/4 UB, going through a 410 cab. Last time I checked UBs, you know, worked.
>>
>>69130073
Why would the intonation be an issue? Yeah, it's very low tension for bass strings but I have some flat wounds lying around that require ridiculously high tension.

>>69130109
>the key is to not jam with raging gorillas that turn everything to the maximum

I'm in a shoegaze band, so that's not happening
>>
>>69130102
Because it's a guitar neck, not a bass neck.
Talking just about tension is nonsense, frequency is defined by scale lenght, tension and linear mass, not just tension. Since a guitar's 25.5" instead of 34" as opposed to a bass.
If you just reduce the scale lenght, which is your case if you put bass strings on a guitar, you're making the frequency go up as the scale lenght is inversely proportional. So in order to compensate for that, you have to lower the tension. Which with bass strings, will end up too low to give a proper note, meaning you'll have to get really thick strings. And I'm not talking about .100 kind of thick, I'm taking >.150 kind of thick.
This means the string will require much more space for relief too, making the action wonky and nigh unplayable in the upper register.

FL studio has some quality synths packaged if you jave the producer edition.

Its pianos suck, for piano i either use lounge lizard(electric) kontakts enotional piano library(acoustic)

It has some decent drum samples, but theyre best suited for hip hop and electronic music, although they do have live drums. For drum machines I use stock sounds, for drum kits I use kontakts Steven Slate Drums library or BFD3.

LA scoring strings and broadway big band are noce kontakt libraries too.

My favorite synths that come with fl are poizone, morphine(fl 12), harmor, toxic biohazard, sytrus, and sakura, though sakuras adjustments are kind of obtuse and i still havent got the hang of it.

You can run an isntance of fl studio in pro tools(i have yet to do it because i dont know if my compiter can handle it), and kontakt, bfd, and lounge lizard have rtas plugins. Whenever i can I always sequence in fl, export midi, and import in pro tools, and then load the plugin over the midi track if im recording and finallizing a project, easier to make adjustments on the fly.

I'm a bedroom bassist who has never played with other people before, I met an older drummer who isn't actively playing anymore but we were getting along really well and he said he'd like to jam with me in the near future.
How do I do that? How do I jam with a drummer? I told him that I'm basically a complete beginner but he just laughed it off and said that it'll be fine. But I don't want to be a nuisance or a disappointment. How do I prepare properly? What should I even play?
>>
>>69129504
You're talking about arpeggiating chords, I think. Maybe instead of playing each note of an arpeggio as a separate finger movement, the player is holding down a chord shape and letting notes ring into each other a bit more, or just holding their hand closely to the frets so they can be ready to play any of the notes within a given chord shape.

I'm looking to buy a tube amp second hand. SO far I've seen these offers
(price is in € as I am a eurofag but it is more less the same as $):

Fender Blues Junior III - 400€
Peavey Classic 30 - 350€
Laney VC15 - 350€
Vox AC15 C1 - 420€

So I'd still have to go and try them but, asuming they're all in good playing order and condition, which one do you guys think is the best value?

Also that gives you a rough idea of the sound and price range i'm going for. Are there any other brands worth checking out?

When I took the pickguard off of my guitar I noticed that the only thing connecting it to the body (other than the screws, of course) was a blue wire that was seemingly soldered into the wood near the bridge. While I was working on the electronics it came loose as the solder was pretty old.
Did I just disconnect the grounding wire? How much of a problem is this?

thats not a pedal steel, thats lap steel

lap steel is pretty easy, you can just tune it to C6 and pretty much every note you hit makes it sound like hawaiian music or old country stuff

Try some Gretsch and Hasgstrom single cuts first. 600 should also net you a decent Epiphone, tho I advise to buy a 'vintage' one (2000 and further back, the further the better); the new ones I've played so far are all pretty shit for the money.

research japanese made gibson copies

epiphones are...ok. I don't think they are that great these days, the made in Korea ones in the 90s were awesome, the made in China ones are..meh. I've had 2 and they were kinda crappy.

Best bet would be to get an Edwards Les Paul copy shipped from japan, this will be around $650-850. They are guitars were the woodwork is done in China and then fretwork and electronics and setup is done at the ESP factory in Japan. I've had 2 and they were better guitars than any of the 4 Gibsons I've owned.

There are many Japanese Gibson copies that were made starting in the late 70s that are (somewhat incorrectly) called lawsuit guitars, and many of these are much better than Gibsons, but theres a lot you have to learn before you buy one so do your research. They have gotten kind of expensive these days but if you do your research and are patient you can score a good one $700-900

Also the small Hartke combos are pretty neat. Very bright sound that you may or may not care for. Hartke uses a bit of metal in their speaker design that causes that tone. For me, Hartke speakers sound most interesting when played with flatwound strings.

>I was working off the idea that /gg/ has no idea how to intonate a guitar, let alone use a soldering iron

Well then you'd be wrong and in typical anonymous 4chan fashion underestimating everyone else whilst overestimating yourself. I learned to solder and wire everything myself years ago and I'm not the only one who lurks these threads with a DIY mentality. It's necessary if you're into modding and want your guitars to play well and a natural progression for any guitarist that sticks with the hobby long enough, Mr Special Snowflake.
>>
>>69135651
Especially with electric guitars/basses there's no excuse, almost everything is really really simple and can be done at home.
I hate the mentality among classical musicians that they take their instrument to the luthier whenever something's wrong, but in many cases they have no choice (seriously though, learn how to prop up your bridge at least if you play UB/cello/violi )
>>
Can a converted garage make a good drum room?
The celing is flat and I'd rather make it sort of octangular with wood panelling but that would probably be too much work and im not sure if I could take that down when its already built.
Would it ruin the properties of the room to put in a window where the garage door used to be?
The room is not perfectly sized or custom designed but simply converting the garage would be a hell of a lot cheaper than building a purpose built room on its own, though maybe in the future I might do that if I got lots of money.

I played a classic 50 a couple times, pretty nice. I own a blues jr tweed, its "cleans" are pretty nice, i dont like it distorted, slight overdrive is pretty nice too.

Blues jrs are a noisy amp, i really dont like it for that reason. But i like the sound. I would pick up the peavey though
>>
>>69136531
The higher-end Revstars are nice cosmetically (binding/frets), have better/more choice in hardware and pick-ups. Also, the cheapest one doesn't have the tone cut circuit that the other ones do.

As for why I like them more than low-end Gibsons, I just like the feel/sound of them more. I think a lot of people have noticed Gibson quality control slipping recently. I can't say much about that, but I just did not care for the Faded/Studio stuff I tried versus the Yamaha stuff.
>>
What are some less known short scale guitars? I know of Les Pauls, Jaguars and other common ones. I'm trying to find a more comfortable guitar for my dad, because he can't move his fingers properly after an injury. Preferably something light too.
>>
>>69135845
Make some of those boxes with insulation in them and put them in various corners.

If ceiling reverberation is an issue put some eye hooks in the joists and a sheet of plywood, hang the plywood by wire. I would also cover the plywood in an old comforter. Do half inch thick so you dont put a lot of strain on your joists. Youll have to put a rug down over then entire room too, probably.

This is a non permanent solution and will not likely work as well as a permanent solution.

>>69136786

I dont think my family would be too happy about that kind of jury-rigged stuff. What I'm really going for is a very live room and it seems that in my experience you need most importantly and oddly shaped celing, obtuse angled corners and as much wood as possible, but also a room that could be used for different purposes in the future such as sub leasing or whatever, so it has to be kinda livable and not too insane.

It would only be jury rigged if you jury rigged it, suspended panels are commonly used in audotoriums.

When i say wire i mean braided wire rope, about an 8th of an inch thick, with a latching hook at either end, like a dogs leash. Eyelet lag screws for the joist, eyelet bolts with washers and locking nuts or nuts with loctite on the panel. If you do 8 you could probably sleep on it.

Unless you have a large room it's not going to sound good enough to make into a live room. Youre going to spend a lot of money making a live room sound good.

I've been looking into the technical details and it seems that if I was to just cut the celing down to convert it into a vaulted celing the walls would start to bow outwards and collapse so thats a no go. This kind of tray celing you are suggesting is not really done here in europe so I will just leave it as it is.
I can put in a suspended wooden floor or just throw some insulation down and put concrete over it, wood might make it far too live?
I guess the room will have to stay largely as a rectangular box which wont be great for getting a neutral sound but it will be cheap and effective, more of a practice/jam room than a home studio setup. It will be extremely "live" in a bad way and as you say its a waste to spend huge money trying to correct it when its fundamentally flawed.
The room I use now for practicing is a converted attic, the room is about 5 X 10 meters with an almost circular celing but the drums ae so loud up there guitarists cant cut it with even a full cab setup. The room seems to intensify the loudness to the point that it can be heard from a mile away and having to bring up an ultra stack for a jam is too much for the neighbours.

How the hell is telling a kid to play chords considered a guitar lesson
>>
>>69141478
Crawl before you walk.
>>
Are there any good nylon string guitars for less than 800 dollars?
>>
>>69141239
They're not unattainable, you can get one for 1500 or even below.
>>
>>69142099

My country's currency is worthless atm, and it's only going to get worse.

But yeah I might be moving soon so I won't lose hope, you're right anon!
>>
Anyone here had ulnar nerve problems? Any tips? How has it affected your playing?

I used to practice 4 to 5 hours a day, now I do just lame ass two bursts of 45 minutes and can't go farther. Waiting on a surgery, I guess.

I have one U left in the rack, what should I put in there?
>>
>>69142809
Compressor or power conditioner
>>
>>69141618
I think I got mine for around 150-200 dollars, it's been a few years though so I don't remember.
>>
>>69142809
do you use a rack preamp into the cab instead of a head?
>>
>>69143163
no that's a swr bass 350 head. super clean but the MFD pickups really push the preamp well, I've found
>>
Is the Chapman Ghost Fret a meme?
>>
>>69142809
compressor. also those LDS cabs are awesome
>>
>>69142809
One of those shitty tuners that takes up a whole space for no reason....oh wait
>>
>>69145304
half the time those are strobe tuners and not crappy. but yeah, those guys that use them live are kinda over doing it
>>
>>69142439
Finger or chicken picking.

Rumor is brendan kelly wrote that song, i saw them on that tour in a venue that housed 1000 people, i couldnt hear the band over the crowd at some points, ridiculous.
>>
>>69145304
>>69145347
it just happened to be a cheaper and simpler alternative to getting a pedal tuner at the time and clip tuners were not yet un-fucked
honestly if there was a rack that stuck out as being worth it (like a 1176) i'd change it out in a second and just get a clip

however, some have argued that my control has gotten really good (mostly fingerstyle, my picking technique is garbage and only usable for the handful of painstakingly fast songs I play for fear of blistering) and they say I don't need a compressor; it might still be a good idea if only for testing out crushing shit, i have a presonus bluebox somewhere that i'll try out again, I'd just held off because its a half-rack w/out a proper mount

beyond that, a conditioner would only be good for protecting my amp which is already an old piece of shit that gets shorted out just trying to make the DI work sometimes

honestly considering ditching the whole rack and going for one of those tiny class-D's
>>
>>69140526
do you use it as your main guitar?
>>
>>69139937
Which Ibanez bass were you looking at? I'm currently perusing extended range basses and came across their prestige. Was that it?
>>
>>69145347
Form with a higher price over function with a lower price is crappy to me. I mean, i see where they come from, there was a point where it looked like racks would replace pedal boards, and when most pedal boards incorporated a tuner pedal it was the logical step. It was a joke though, whatever works best for whoever is the best thing to do, im not sitting judging or condemning people for doing something I dont do.

To me they just scream, "look ma, i know how to stay in tune."

playing on just 2 strings now. it's amazing how much variety you can get from just different intervals on 2 strings. i didn't appreciate it the first time i tried to go through advancing guitarist because i just did solo'ing on 2 strings. i get more appreciation for it now that i'm doing mini 2 note chords

Anyone has a .pdf or a .png of a printable action gauge? All the ones i find on google are crap.
Thanks.
>>
>>69140469 just reminded me I needed to post my $100 headless find. 80s Hohner G2T, the cheap version they licensed cause they were still making the composite ones at the time.

Suggestions what I should do with it?

Nice. I've really liked what I heard from the Bassbreakers. And I think low-wattage tube heads are pretty nifty.

Picked a couple of things up in the last month, a Doom Bloom Fuzz and a Ditto Looper. Also found a box of mints to put picks in.

So over the past week I'm finally understanding what scales and the circle of fifths is all about, but I don't understand what it means to play chords in a key of D, C, G, whatever. Nor do I understand how to meld scales and chords together. A push in the right direction, please? Does the circle of fifths also tell me what notes come after each other well in terms of scales?
>>
>>69147518
The fifth refers to a note on the scale (the fifth one obviously) and chords can be constructed with such notes (base, third and fifth for major chords by example) and a key is more or less the same thing as a scale
>>
How do I get that crisp attack on notes like Kevin Parker did in the solo of Endors Toi?
>>
>>69147864
ask him you fucking stupid nigger
or maybe post a fucking link that shows what you fucking want instead of expecting us to genuinely spoonfeed tghe shit out of you you useless fucking pile of trash fucking kill yourself
>>
>>69147518
>The fifth refers to a note on the scale (the fifth one obviously)
I'm not sure what this means but I'll look into it.
>and chords can be constructed with such notes
What like roots?
>(base, third and fifth)
Dunno what these mean either.
>and a key is more or less the same thing as a scale
So there's C scales, D scales, etc?
>>
>>69147896
Do you happen to be a bass player?
>>
>>69147927
no not yet i'm just drunk and agitated
>>
>>69147919
It all will come together if you keep reading through, trying to learn all the concepts even if just the basic ones can be a little overwhelming at first, just be patient and constant with it.

>>69127244
WHAT A NICE DOGGO
>>
>>69147864
Probably a compressor, I don't remember it that well, and i'm watching racecars so can't check now
>>
>>69127244
I'm still drinking thanks man
>>
how do I get better
more specifically I can play a bunch of chords and make them sound good together, but I've never gotten past that really, just strumming and picking chords or random notes
>>
>>69148152
Learn time signatures play every day. Rhythm, scales, and Arpeggios. Learn a couple of neat tricks too and you're good harmonics are pretty important too good for tuning your guitar if you're good enough to hear the soundwaves.
>>
>>69148222
Well I know all about time signatures and rhythm because of drums, where do I even get started with scales and arpeggios? Random ones on chordbook?
>>
>>69148295
It's really easy just look up scales on a site like justinguitar

BANJO MOTHERFUCKERS

DO YOU PLAY IT?
>>
Any body jam with other musicians here? How do you hear yourself over the drummer without a huge amp?
>>
>>69148358
>start playing banjo
>fuck it up because I messed with the coordinator rods too much

Back to guitar, I guess.
>>
>>69148363
30 watt amp is plenty

a 30 watt 1x12 combo is not a huge amp
>>
>>69148394
i love to play it but there dont seem to be a lot of good resources out there for learning... might just keep it around for fun and start learning piano

im not satisfied by just guitar, idk why

The banjo definitely has a unique sound that can't be matched with guitar.

As far as learning resources go, I only attempted clawhammer, so I went with Dan Levenson's and Ken Perlman's books. They worked pretty well until I broke my banjo.
