Were there specific albums that made you feel like this? I read reviews of albums sometimes but I don't have sources of music criticism/journalism that I regularly return to, so I genuinely think it's impossible that I am having my taste "dictated" by some external source. 90% of the time when I listen to an album it is either because I have bought it at a record shop, a friend has recommended it to me, or I saw or heard its name mentioned somewhere. There's a point to rating like that though. If you have a 3-digit number of 5s then I can't tell from your ratings what you treasure the absolute most, likely making me less interested in your profile.

All the more reason to change your rating system accordingly. You have 10 rating options, why use half of them for uninteresting music? If you instead set 2.5 to mean good (not a radical system by any means; currently the recommended rating system for sonemic has 2.0 set to acceptable) then you'll probably end up with fewer 5s but you'll still love music just as much. Nothing pretentious or negative about that

I just prefer the standard distribution approach. 2.5 is decent, 3 is I like it but it's nothing special, and 5 makes it one of my favorite records. Just because I have a lot of 5's doesn't mean they're any less treasured to me

I used to make topster charts and RYM lists to narrow my taste down. It really helps so you should at least give it a try.

Mystic Stylez is the most pleasant surprise there. But I do prefer the otherworldly Underground Vol 1, those ethereal beats were definitely ahead of their time, & ridiculously hypnotic. And Donuts is my favourite hip-hop album of all time, so it's always nice seeing that

Biggest disagreement: Father John Misty... I'm indifferent to most Sufjan I've heard (would you say they have similar appeal?) but at least with him I can see a certain elegance to his melodies, while that Honeybear album was bland in every single way to me
