i know nothing abt composition! its a crazy adventure, and i learn new things everyday, its a lot of fun.

say, if i were playing in C major, and i tuned a melodic synth to +600 cents, would it make sense musically? or would it just be pitched to another key? thx
>>
>>68932685
You would just make it higher by 6 semitones.
>>
>>68932777
yeah. does that make sense to compose with in c major though? sorry i am literally so bad with music. i was also horrible with math in high school and it kind of feels similar

FL Studio is easier but more simple. Ableton is hard but has more HQ synths and VSTs.

Ive been using fl studios since 2007(only started getting serious with it since 2013), would it make sense to move to ableton now that im realizing my limitations with fl. I mostly do hip hop beats, but i also program drum tracks for stuff like rock and funk tracks, where recording live instruments work best. I do my recording in pro tools with an exported midi usually using 3rd party synths or sample libraries.

I really like the ease of fl studio, you can change up structure very quickly, but i dont see many people using it anymore unless they strictly do hip hop, which I dont. I dont plan on making any edm in the immediate future, but its definetly likely i will down the road.
>>

don't usually make music like this, mixed this in February and I'm coming back to it. recs on free trumpet/brass au's? I think it could benefit from some brass
>>
>>68935286

I have that same reel to reel. It's the shit. I bounce tracks to it from my mixer and cut them up. I like the way it makes my tracks sound. gives them an imperfection that I enjoy.

Plus it's fun to handle your tunes in a tactile way. I think it's given me a better understanding of mixing, because it's easy to make a tape recording sound shitty, hard to make it sound tight.
>>
>>68935894
word. I found it for pretty cheap on cl but the dude hasn't responded yet, and I want it so bad. I'm mainly interested for putting saturation on bass and drums, but also want to experiment with recording vocals on it/use it as an outboard delay effect. how's it to maintain?
>>
>>68935962

The saturation is great. I do that a lot. I haven't used it as much for single track recording (mostly just mixdowns) but I bet it would still sound great.

I got mine in great condition so maintenance has been simple so far. I wipe the heads with isopropyl (preferably 90%) almost every time I use it.

The main issue I've found is finding good tape. Read up on "sticky shed" if you don't already know about it. I think like 60% of all the tape made between the 60s-80s has this problem. It's a total pain in the ass that can be avoided if you get the right tape. (I'm still trying to find some)
>>
>>68936144
so the tape on amazon that's fairly inexpensive sucks? How long does a reel last you, personally? Maybe look into the tape they sell at vintageking audio, it's fairly expensive ($74 for 1/4'' tape), but it might be worth it.

I don't know too much about reel to reels yet, but what exactly is the difference between the mic input and the RCA inputs in the back? does the mic input hit a preamp before, and the RCA not? Makes me wonder if vocals/anything would have an entirely different characteristic through the mic input vs the RCA input
>>
>>68934987
>https://clyp.it/bjin3icb

I actually like this, you need some highs though. Add a pad/string/shaker in there
>>
>>68936230

I'm still erasing and reusing the only reel I have that doesn't shed. I should definitely get a new reel though.

The mic inputs are the only malfunctioning part on my machine, so I can't say. Probably not too different though. I think the tape itself will be the main factor that determines the color of your sound, provided your machine works fine.

Tape machines are like film cameras, working in time rather than space. They give back what you give them. You have to practice making a tape mix sound good very much like taking a good photograph. A bad mix will still sound bad on tape.

But they are fun as hell to use. And once you run a mix through it, now you're analog.
>>
Just got a pair of monitors, and I hearing a white noise coming from it. I'm using TRS cables instead of xlrs to connect it to the aux on my computer, is this whats causing it?
>>
>>68936482
I was just assuming that the mic input would make a much hotter signal than the rca, but it sounds like it's not a problem. Guess I'll find out at some point.

So are you sending individual tracks through the tape, the entire mix, or both? Do you process a track, run it through the machine, then process again? Link me to some of your work if you've got some to share

Well, start with the basics, the kick and the bass.

The bass-y sound you have sounds a bit out of place, too wide in the stereo field and as if there is reverb on it.

The other sounds, apart from kick and bass, should be highpassed so they don't muddy up the bass frequencies. Also, try putting some sidechain on the effecty things so they duck whenever the kick hits.

I've tried to make some EDM too but I always end up with a repetitive 16 bar loop and never make anything out of it

Sorry for sounding mean.

You can continue it to improve production techniques.

Right now it sounds very random, especially the synth riff you got going, like you just hit record and sort of played without keeping in tempo.

The kick sounds very muffled as well, as if it's going through a lowpass filter. It needs more high end to cut through the mix, right now it just sounds like a pillow.

>half the people posting on this thread just need to go to the soundcloud thread

y
>>
>>68941282
Sure, just on the top of my mind

First, the mix is very low (which is fine since you're still in the mixing stage) but it's a good idea to just put a limiter on the master that you can turn on whenever you want to bounce the track to post it on clyp, otherwise the volume will be way low.

The bass is clashing with the kick. Either EQ the bass and kick so they don't fight for the same frequency ranges or sidechain the bass to the kick. The bass is also too loud compared the kick. Generally, in EDM, the kick should be the loudest element since it drives the track.

The "drop" at 17 seconds where the pad starts is too abrubt.
>>
>>68941421
soundcloud treads are a circle jerk to get fake follower, not get actual constructive feedback.
>>
>>68941579
Alright thanks man, I might layer the kick to give it a little more punch. You helped me realize how wide open it was.
>>

>>
>>68942275
hmm post a sound clip. i'm assuming you're listening to the input while recording (as opposed to the playback which would have latency). my guess is it's a clocking issue but it's tough to know just yet.

what sample rate are you recording at and which DAW are you using?

I just spent a lot of time figuring this out on my own. Going straight from guitar -> Scarlett 2i2 -> laptop still had the crackling. Most likely it's a problem with the USB port not getting enough power, because I'm using a hub (only one USB port lel) and switching to a different port got rid of some of the crackling. Plugging in directly gives off flashing lights which indicates that the device can't draw enough power. I'll get a self-powered USB hub and see if that fixes it.

I would assume that Korg would make better gear then Midiplus.

I think the $100 area is the right place for a beginner mini keyboards. You want something with at least a few knobs on it. If you skimp out you'll just end up replacing it next time you have money, better get something that will actually last you until you decide to really upgrade. It'll be cheaper in the long run.

Hey guys, I got given a Tascam 414 Portastudio by a friend and I'm really liking analogue recording. I don't have any background in production or sound engineering though, so I'm really feeling my way around in the dark here and it's frustrating tossing up between being able to easily edit/arrange stuff digitally vs. the intuitive nature and tone of recording to tape. I've read that with four leads going from each track you can import each channel into a DAW. This seems like it would be the best way for me to do things, so I have the physical tapes for sentimental value and also have someone who knows what they're doing for the mix.

My question is, what exactly am I going to need to do that? I don't even know the names of the leads. I'm really gear illiterate beyond pedals and actually playing music.

How can I transfer my cubase projects to another DAW? And which is the best DAW available for piracy for windows?

I just found out that the cracked cubase elements version I have doesn't feature side chaining, and the cubase versions that do aren't cracked. So I'll either have to pirate another DAW with full features and slooowly transfer my projects there (400projects atm), or suck it up and buy cubase

I need a Focusrite 18i8. I can get it the first gen locally used for $150 or buy the 2nd gen new for $300. Is it worth $150 more for the new gen? Recording drums and guitar mainly, not that it really matters...
>>
>>68955691

i know what the differences are. it's mainly latency. 9ms vs 3ms. don't know if it's worth $150, would like to get some opinions.
>>
>>68955730
I'm trying to set the latency on my daw to 9ms and comparing it with 3ms by changing the sample rate and to be honest I really don't notice the difference. But of course I prefer the 3ms just to be safe but I don't think it's a 150$ difference.

Be deadly serious /prod/

Is FL for kids, is ableton superior? Honestly
>>
>>68956641
I'd say that FL is for producers starting off, getting a hold of DAWs.
I also don't like the look of ableton.
>>
>>68956641
No, it's just a meme because most FL users are young because it's a well known DAW around electronic music producers and hip hop producers which is what the young people are into.

It's a very nicely featured DAW. Today pretty much all DAWs have the same features with slight differences. Similar to how the other anon said, I personally don't like the look of FL, too much like win95. I find Ableton looks much more streamline and I really like how Bitwig looks.

Easily Logic, Protools and reaper are the more professional or conventional looking ones. Renoise is strange because it's a Tracker.

Which is superior? Depends who you ask. I like Ableton better.
>>
>>68956540

pretty good for your first try, man. Certainly better than what I first made. Mix is ok. I think the sidechain on the kick is a bit too strong. My monitor headphones are bass-weak and it still over powers the mix.
Composition-wise: be careful with 'out-of-scale' notes when you're doing those 'bends'. It's not that you can't, it's that you have to be careful when you do them and how long you stay on them.

Synthesis Question:
I've got a serum patch that's kind of a gritty rhodes sound, now I'm trying to get the tremolo effect to (for lack of vocab) wub faster with higher played notes and wub slower with lower notes. logic has a lot of things that are impractical and unintuitive but it is a great daw.

I recently started using it at the studio i worked at and at the start it was really slow and having trouble with keyboard shortcuts and finding how to do basic shit. The best thing you can do is just use it and acclimate to it after a while.

The best thing about logic is that it has great sounds and effects plus the drummers thing is a huge time saver as well as a good idea-source.

I think it's pretty cool man. I think it'd only be super worth it if you use all the native instruments software though because the point if it pretty much is integration with the software. If all you're looking for is a midi controller with good key action then i'm sure you could save money going with something without all the extra bells & whistles.
>>
>>68959397
i have the s61, first actual midi controller so nothing to compare it to but i've had no problems with it or the software.
if money isn't too much of an issue the komplete 10 (think it's 11 now) bundle has some nice sample instruments/synths etc
apparently the s88 has actual weighted keys which you probably already know
if you're looking to own a controller that can double as a piano and don't mind the high price tag i guess you can get that

I'm tryna make some minimal wave/darkwave on fl studio, what are some good synth presets?

is a digital multitracker a viable option?

Just wondering, I'm moving from 4 track to either computer or a digital multitracker/workstation.

I don't like computer as much since I have a million hardware effects, racks, etc. Like, I have 12 30 band EQ racks and don't trust software EQ for anything.

Also I don't like how on computer you can "see" the tracks, since I feel that takes away from what you hear since you look at it and think "oh, too loud" when it might not be. I don't like mixing visual and audio at all since they deserve to be separated. The music itself is visual enough for me to not need to see some stupid ass bar graph on a computer screen that doesn't even know the difference between a circle note and a line note.

Like, the kick drum sound is a basin and the hihat is an L shaped "tick" noise that's usually green. But all I get on computer is some stupid wavy line saying "It's 12 dB here" and on 4 track all I get is some needle that points left or right.

What's better?

Or should I get a reel to reel? My friends dad has a 16 track half inch from the 70s that he said he'd sell to me for 900 dollars.

That's a good price if it's a Tascam. It's not something that's going to fix your sound though.

OTOH, I'm pretty skeptical about all of the graphic EQ plugins I use. They're pretty sterile. If I want to get good tone from a graphic EQ, I usually use this old Roland mixer I have. Crazy good tone on the EQs and good preamps too.

I wish mixers still had some individual tone instead of being clean as fuck like they are these days.

Is Operator on Ableton the most underrated device ever? When I first got Ableton I just thought nothing of it but it's such a nice compact FM synth

I think my bottom end looks pretty good next to pink noise, but my mid range is full of peaks. How do I fix it?

Clyp related, but back then the curve looked even worse.

A bit of soft mid-band compression would help I think
>>
>>68968883
Also listening to the track, maybe should add a bit of stereo width, everything feels very central
>>
>>68968917
In theory it should, but it's not flattening the peaks as much as I'd like to, I tried compressing the master bus and every track individually.
>>68968931
I converted many tracks to mono and I'm panning them because the stereo field was really muddy.

What specs on a MacBook pro are optimal price to performance for Logic? I use a lot of synths like serum.

TAL Reverb 2, 3 and 4, Ambience, Reverb SOLO, Voxengo Old School Verb. Just off the top of my head. All fairly limited, if you want really good ones you gotta have the money. These guys have their place though.

I dream of Altiverb ;-;

I bought it on sale but haven't played with it much. It's kinda fun but seems to be nothing more than a very limited FL. Very beat-based and very limited track numbers, instruments, effects etc.
Fun if you don't want much. Kind of an intro to working in an actual DAW.
>>
>>68953435
Probably not. DAW specific elements can almost never be transferred, esp. if it's coded workflow stuff.

Imo alchemy and space designer alone are worth the price tag so it's a good buy regardless.

Just take the time to get familiar. Youtube tutorials will be your best friend. Watch some videos going over the basics, start to experiment and when younhave a question, google it or look for a tutorial.
Also RTFM.

i liked listening to it while messaging on facebook

You need more than $250 friend. But for the price point, Superlux makes a really nice pair of small body condensers. $169 for the pair, best you'll find at the price point and were recommended by a long term professional who works with $20k+ equipment. Can make good overheards.

Apparently Beyer m55s can be likened to 421s for mid-range stuff like toms, i got one secondhand for $50 the other day.

D112 is a v good kick mic. Haven't researched the price myself. A kick mic will be essential though.

you can use a 421 for kicks too
>>
did you guys pirate your FL studios? i downloaded the demo version thought it was pretty cool, look at purchase options and all the good stuff is locked behind a $800 paywall kek
>>
So, just out of curiosity, how many of you guys went to school for audio engineering or music production?
>>
>>68972629
nigga it's just 189 eurodollars, the more expensive versions just have more plugins and you can also use them in other daws. The cheapest version (89 euros) doesn't have audio clips which is stupid.
>>
>>68972696
Not him but do you know any special pricing options on Ableton Live?
>>
>>68938859
Dayum son whereja find this
>>
>>68972640
I would like to but it's expensive. Which is why when I call myself a "musician" I use the term loosely.
