what does /gg/ think about Epiphone Les Paul LQs? made in Japan and have a lacquer finish and a Gibson style open book headstock. I'm thinking about buying this one

You can literally just play any notes off the Bflat blues scale for the entire time and it will sound O.K/passable if not "decent." You'll lack any depth, but I'd imagine if your improv audition piece is a 12 bar blues they just want to see if you know what music is. (Blues scale is 1, flat 3, 4, flat 5, 5, flat 7 BTW).

>>
>>68930075
You have to turn down the amount of repeats. You're getting into infinite feedback which can be cool, but also does that if you're not expecting it.
>>
>>68930141
ok yeah i noticed it goes away when repeats are turned down i just didnt think infinite repeats would cause the signal to get louder and louder
>>
>>68930047
Tension is normal but it shouldn't derail you. Do you have a bandleader? If you don't, someone needs to step up--there always has to be someone who can be the jerk and keep everyone in line. It's not fun but it's necessary and keeps things together.
>>
>>68930200
It happens for all analog delays. You can see it here being manipulated for a neat noise.

What strings would you guys recommend for a GS mini steel string acoustic? I currently have the stock ones on but am well overdue for a string change
>>
>>68930047
It's normal. Best thing is to try and sit everyone down and sort it out. If your band doesn't really have a leader (i.e. someone who spearheads the big decisions) try and take that position. In the end it's normal. Happens a lot when you see the same people day in and day out, you end up hating the little quirks and flaws in people.

Not trying to be a dick, but I don't think you're prepared for whatever you're auditioning for (looks like high school jazz band). How can I tell if the guitar is good or not? I've never played guitar and I'm looking into getting one. What could I test if I end up meeting the guy?
>>
>>68932709
If it works when plugged in, volume and tone work, any obvious damage (especially chunks missing or where it's been dropped), cracks around the neck/body joint, tuners work.

Maybe it's just that pic, but it looks like the guitar is in need of a new nut - a cheap fix, though
>>
>>68932773
Make sure the neck is fairly straight
>>
>>68932709
Neck should be straight, not warped or bent, shake it so you at least know the truss rod isnt broken, check that the frets still have some life in em, plug it in and mess with the tone / volume to see if the pots are ok, check that the tuners aren't wobbly, check for any fissures or cracks in the headstock / neck joint, see that the neck is comfortable to your hand, and check how high the action is at the 12th fret (marked by 2 dots on the fretboard, action = distance between string and frets).
Now if the action is too high that might yet be salvageable but you have no way to know how much life the truss rod has left in it so I wouldn't recommend getting it especially if it's cheap/old. Same goes for frets, you could refret it but it's absolutely not worth it for a cheap guitar so you should see that theyre ok. Maybe check that the body isn't made of composite wood cause it's cheap, but really I've had some composite wood guitars and they were alright.

Outstanding. Japan has an impeccable track record when it comes to guitars and even their Edwards and Tokai Gibbo copies are phenomenal.

Having said all that, people continue to buy and will always buy American made Gibsons because the headstock says GIBSON. There's simply no substitute for buying a real one from the very manufacturer which ensures you get the correct instrument dimensions, top carve, neck radius and every other spec.

I'd be pretty happy with a Japanese Epiphone if I had no other options but these days I would just save up for a full on Gibson. I don't really buy Gibson anything given their horrible reputation since the last decade, but that's what I'd do if I wanted one. Brand name counts for a lot, like it or lump it.

Willing to bet you can't play Jazz worth a damn and neither can anyone on this board.

Metal is fucking cheesy but its more the people espousing and propagating the genre than the genre itself. There's nothing inherently wrong with fast, aggressive and crushing music.

>Honest question, what do people dislike about PRS guitars?

Sour grapes. PRS are expensive and not everyone can afford them.

There are several good arguments to be made against PRS, such as there being a multitude of sensible and affordable options for much much less money that will do the job just as well if not better than a pretty cork sniffer guitar with a reputation as a lawyer/dentist brand.

I'm a PRS owner but I'll tell you right now that if ESP Standard Series had not been dissolved, I would have never started buying them. You don't NEED to spend several thousand to have a serviceable instrument. I will say that the Custom 24s I own are BY FAR the best guitars I've ever touched in terms of comfort, fit and finish and playability, and I've played a lot from low to medium to high end. PRS look beautiful and they play beautiful too. You're paying a premium for American labour, QC, rare and frilly maple tops and an immaculate stain and dye job. No expense is spared on them, the fret jobs are perfect, the nut is never cut sloppily, the electronics and especially the pots are to Paul's spec and I can tell by how bright the guitar can be that they overshoot a little. They have very low torque which is something I don't usually like, but I like these ones.

Also, I love the birds. I think they complete the guitar. The Custom 24's current incarnation is so far its most aesthetically pleasing.

They don't really work there lad, put them in front of the amp.

Chorus with overdrive isn't great imo, but some BBD chorus's do grit up the sound a bit. I reckon phaser/flanger with OD works better if you want modulation with dirt.

I really don't need more basses.
But I think I'm buying more basses.
Would it be silly/stupid when I'm looking for a band to have lots of gear if I'm not amazing?
>>
>>68935102
oh yeah thats not allowed, they check before you buy new gear.
>>
>>68935117
I mean, if I show up somewhere or find people to play with, and I'm not an amazing bassist. Would it be weird for an amateur to bring a nice amp and a 410 cab and several expensive basses?
>>
>>68935171
>several expensive basses?
I think it would be weird to bring more then 2 honestly. Especially if there's no difference between them. Like Flats/Rounds, Active/Passive, hollow/solid etc.

But bassplayers are often gear snobs so it's kinda expected honestly. I brought a bigger pedalboard then the guitar players had in my last band. Kinda funny to see how jealous and weird some people get.
>>
>>68935221
I can definitely just bring 2 basses, but I don't know. I don't want to appear like a retard who doesn't practice and just buys flashy gear. I just started playing a year ago and I practice whenever I can, but life can be pretty busy and I enjoy playing on nice instruments. I'm also socially retarded so I don't know how I'd handle someone being jealous or making a remark at my playing vs the gear I own. Maybe I'm just over thinking this I don't know.

But what I'm really curious about, I guess I should ask whether they already have an amp or a cab at a rehearsal space? And if they don't it would be weird to bring a 410 cab, right just for a rehearsal or when we first meet? So should I get a 112 or 115 combo and bring the big cab when I'm actually part of a band?
>>
Anybody use university books to study music?
Thinking about picking one up because I live in college town and I'm sure I could pick up a cheap textbook.
>>
>>68935273
4x10 is kinda equivalent to 1x15 I think. Two 4x10's is overkill. It's really up to how powerful the amp is. But most rehearsal spaces I've been to you can rent/hire amps for the session.

I can't tell how good you are, but some people will shittalk anyway. But if you can't play basic shit you'll look like a fool walking in with alot of expensive gear. If you've never played with a band, you might wanna bring less, because there's a lot of things you can't really learn at home.
>>
>>68927058

Sorry for my English but I have a question. When a model says wide profile neck, does this mean a bigger fretboard or is the shape/thickness in the back of the neck going to be bigger?
>>
>>68928727
They're good guitars that are probably more expensive than they actually should be and their customer base is typically upper middle class people who put them on a wall and play them every once and a while. Half of it is sour grapes over the fact that some people cant afford them and the rest is the fact that a saavy or smart player can probably get something equal or better in quality for much less with their own tinkering.

They're kinda meme guitars as well. Some metal kids (among others) have boners for PRS, and then talk them up like they're the best thing ever. Then you get people that talk up SE's like they're better then any other budget guitar brand. Then you have that whole snooty bourgeois thing, like people discovered some weird truth that no one else knows about.

The hype goes further then the actual quality of the instruments, but they are good guitars. It's kinda more hating the players, and then that makes people hate the company.

And also Gibson-fags get butthurt because PRS is what Gibson pretends it is.

Keep in mind that none of the things people mentioned are deal breakers except a warped neck/broken truss. even if you plug it in and it makes no sound, that's a cheap and easy fix at the guitar shop. the TT likes a lot of power amp distortion. So if you're looking for an amp to horse around with a drummer or to really push that's not going to blow the windows out then that's it. If you need to practice in an apartment, then the HT or a modeling amp is going to be a better look.

Those chord names you have are really ugly and counter-intuitive to me, especially if you're basing it on F minor. I'm going to rewrite the weird ones with enharmonic equivalents that I think are simpler to work with:

>C#maj7
Dbmaj7
>B6
Abmin7
>Fm#5
Db
>E6
Dbmin7
>E6b5
Dbmin6

From that, I notice you can basically use Db scales over the entire thing pretty smoothly. 1st measure Db Lydian, 2nd measure Db Dorian, 3rd back to Db Lydian, then 4th Db Dorian again. I think it'd be pretty easy to make something melodic out of that. I don't have the rest of the piece for reference though, so I could be completely wrong.

Looks, sounds, etc. The neck's comfy. It's a bit flatter than a Gibson, but not as thick. I like the options of P90's or humbuckers (both of which sound great in the higher end models). And the Revstar's have a "dry switch" that kind of thins out the sound like a coil-tap.

I don't even know if this is the right place to ask this but here it goes:

I've always played acoustic guitar.
Now, with kids, I can almost never play because of noise (when he's asleep) and because the the damn kid also wants to play if he's awake.
I'm thinking of getting an electric guitar for Christmas so I can at least play a bit of guitar when he's asleep.

I'm a bit poor so what are the options for connecting an electric guitar to a computer and play with headphones, also adding some effects like distortion etc?

>>
>>68951277
Cool.
Could you please point me out in some direction?
>>
>>68951215
The cheapest of the cheapest is just get a 6.35 -> 3.5mm adapter to plug the guitar to your pc's line in. Shit goes for like $1.
For effects you can either pirate Guitar Rig, Amplitube and commercial VST plugins or just do with free alternatives like Rakarrack, Guitarix(not sure if any of those have windows builds though) and free VST plugins.

>>68951276
Well nigga, then you have no right to go cheap anymore. Get a scarlett audio interface and/or install a linux distro with a realtime kernel and jack.
>>
>>68951303
Humm, so something like the Scarlett 2i2 would be ok, right?
It's 150$, I guess it could be worse. I'll just have to go cheap on the guitar.
I was thinking of getting a 2nd hand Epiphone SG.

Yes, it's what /gg/ usually recommends.
>tfw want a 2i2 and a 2nd hand Epiphone SG but the former alone goes for $300 over here
You're lucky, man.

Vox Amplug lad, saves the routing through the competer
>>
>>68951096
what do you mean anon
>>
>>68951288
>>68951347
Yeah, the Scarlett 2i2 is pretty standard
>>
>>68951443
To start doing power chords that way. Normally I just do a full barr chord and only play three strings cause that takes the least effort
>>
>>68951215
Some amps do have headphone jacks but it would be more versatile to go the VST route
>>
>>68951423
That looks cool as fuck, more portable but maybe less versatile.

Thanks /gg/, I now have to make some decisions.
I really like the freedom Vox Amplug gives, but I think it would also be cool to have decent FX on the computer, maybe even recording some stuff.

But for the 40$ of the Vox, I think I'll get them all.

On the other hand, I can get a Behringer U-Phoria UMC204HD for 85$ (I hate behringer, but the price looks right). How does this compares to the 2i2?

any alternatives to EHX Ring Thing?
>>

You can use ASIO4ALL and have low latency but your PC has to be good for it not sound noisey with a small buffer

The asio also takes over the soundcard and you cant play music on media player to play along

>ASIO4ALL
Yeah I remember that, my brother had it, it completely raped his computer and I don't think my current one is much better.

After a bit of search I think I'll go for a 2nd hand Epiphone SG, Vox Amplug 2 Classic Rock and a Steinberg UR22 MK2 (basically because of the MIDI that the 2i2 does not have).

Anyway, thanks /gg/.

Not him, but it's got better construction and wood and the tailpiece is on the proper Jazzmaster position.

Both don't have real Jazzmaster pickups though they got them shitty ass pickups.
