Bass vs Guitar

Guitar:
Literally everyone plays it
Plebian and mostly attracts retards
Even if you get really good you still be a dime a dozen
Moocher, never useful to anyone
Literally *everyone* plays it

Bass:
High demand, low supply
Patrician as fuck
Easy to find jams and bands, can pick and choose who you want to work with
Extremely useful to everyone, always needed for gigs

Make the right choice, /mu/

I need two things explained to me:
1) Why the fuck does Orange make so many goddamned amplifiers and which ones are the ones actually worth using for stoner/sludge
2) Has anyone in the history of music used a Sansamp for something other than bass and had it come out sounding decent
>>
>>68906174
>tfw bass player
>too autistic to find jammates

Really though after playing bass for so long I finally played guitar the other day and I'm finding it super hard to play. Going from fat to skinny strings is tough stuff.
>>
>>68906099
Does anyone know what this is?
>>
>>68906629
Definitely takes some getting used to and is much harder at first. Once you get to bar chords, though, the difficulty plateaus and it's easy from there.
>>
>>68906455
> Has anyone in the history of music used a Sansamp for something other than bass and had it come out sounding decent

Probably not what you're thinking of, but just 30 minutes ago I recorded a quick jam using the SansAmp PSA-1 plug-in on lead guitar. I didn't use it for much other than adding in a bit more presence and a tiny (almost negligible) bit of crunch

Oh I already learned quite a chunk of guitar it's just getting back into the groove of it after so long that's tough. Hell bar chords are all I've been playing because it's pretty hard to fuck that up. It's the playing individual notes that's tough. I've been finger picking for a long time so moving between strings can get annoying, as does placing my fingers on those notes without hitting other strings. I don't know how I was playing Maiden and Zappa before bass.

Hey, got a 12-string guitar that has this pickup in it. I'm going to play at a open mic in a couple weeks, and I don't have any experience playing with a plugged in acoustic. How should I set the pickup? I play finger-picking sand folk strumming stuff.

does anyone know of a pedal that could distort my pedals in the effects loop?

I love my TH30 and the effects loop, but sometimes I want to distort the reverbs and stuff in the loop. But all the OD / Distortion / Fuzz pedals are designed to go before the preamp, and sound like shit when sandwiched in the loop.

Just looking for some kind of pedal to dirty my reverbs and delays in an effects loop.

Rate my poorfag setup. The guitar is a Memphis Stratocaster that I bought used from a guy that played like 3 times then gave up. The amp is a no-name SGA20 that's supposedly 26W. Doesn't sound the best but it's better than what comes with most cheap guitars. Bought both from the same guy for around 100U$S, it would've cost like 400U$S new. The pedal was 100U$S back when the dollar was a bit cheaper in my country so accounting for currency value it was actually 17U$S cheaper or so. I'm pretty sure it's the most valuable of the three if we only take into account manufacturing cost, the guitar looks, feels, and is pretty cheap, and the amp sounds like it's worth a lot more than it actually is but build quality feels like a chink built some speakers into a suitcase.
>>
>>68908430
There is a guitar center near me and in regards to a music school, there is one that is a part of my local community college, but when I went there when I was younger, the teacher only taught me how to play songs so I don't really have a proper education.
>>
>>68908347

This.

But if you're trying to get a new, get a Jackson from out of those two. I guess you are trying to play rock/metal/punk? How about looking into getting an used Schecter? I saw this one gig once and the guitarist was playing a cheap Jackson (along the lines that you wanna get) and he was going out of tune ALL THE TIME, it was pretty embarrassing, I felt bad for the poor guy. It might have only been his guitar, but still, I'd be wary. I'd really just get an used Schecter if I were you.

Epi SG or LP Specials are shite, never bother with those. You'll lose your enthusiasm with playing your electric guitar right quick with those abominations.
>>
>>68911953
what exactly is wrong with them?
>>
>>68912052
You mean the Specials? Can't stay in tune for this, cheapass hardware, shit pickups, really just an overall rotten deal, I personally wouldn't pay more than 20 euros for a Epi Special. It's a beginner's trap, they want an LP or a SG and they see it's an Epi so it can't be that bad, but it is. Those guitars are the worst.
>>
>>68912063
after i replaced the strings, it doesnt seem too bad for a beginner's guitar
obviously a budget thing, you would buy it to play on a shitty 10 watt practice amp
tuning yeah, but tuning takes 2 minutes to do at the start of a session
>>
>>68912087
Really, you can do so, so much better for the money if you're a beginner. It's an extraordinarily shit piece of equipment designed to con rookies. The worst thing is that I've personally seen a guy who wanted to learn to play and bought an LP Special and after two months of struggling with that thing, he said fuck it, and didn't touch a guitar until I sold him my oldass Squier Strat which ran circles around the LP. He started playing again and now he's on his second guitar and plays in a band.
>>
>>68911953
>I'd really just get an used Schecter if I were you.
The old Schecters with the thick neck/flat radius combo really feel awful, I'd rather go for a standard Ibanez for the wizard neck.

>>68912087
you're going to go out of tune more easily on stage, you'll keep moving, there's heat, you get caught in the moment and bash the shit out of your strings because you're having fun. Having to tune each song will cut off your playing time and annoy everyone.
>>
>>68911953
epiphone are really the worst brand ive ever used
>>
>>68912131
Hm, maybe you're right, I recommended Schecters cos I have a Damien Elite-6 and it's such a great fucking guitar for the money (bought it for like $300 used), unbelievable bargain, a dream to play. But yeah, I understand what you mean, and an Ibanez would be a great choice as well. Plays great right out of the box, doesn't break your wallet and sounds great.
>>
>>68912145
Likewise. BC Rich are terrible guitars as well, but they're more of novelty guitars than anything else, Epiphones are trying to be passed off as serious guitars, it's terrible.

How do i start getting into classical bros? It's quite hard to read and there doesn't seem a lot of resources aside from books where you jump right into playing the songs or right handed technique practice.
>>
>>68912145

I can't believe how expensive they are now. I had an Epi Les Paul Custom for years and it was a pretty good guitar. Electrics were shit and had to change everything, but after that I was about £400 including a set of Burstbuckers.

Now I see they start at £500 and go to over £600!! That is fucking insane, especially when you can get a Gibson LP Studio for £600 and they are seriously good guitars.

squiers are cheap and you know what, they don't sound half bad most of the time. i know quite a few accomplished musicians that sold their expensive gear for more studio stuff and instead replaced their guitar and bass with squiers. of course they record directly onto protools, but when they go live they bring them along too.

if you're just gonna get started, why not?

I'm looking at getting a Vintage Modified Squier Jaguar for 250 euros.

The guitar is used, bought new last year, got complete documentation, and it had its nut replaced with a TUSQ one, the bridge had been replaced with a Les Paul one, the bridge pickup had been replaced with a humbucker RM pickup (a great Czech company that makes handmade pickups), so it looks like a swell fucking deal. The guy is willing to throw in a fender strap, gig bag and strap locks with it, along with the original bridge and pickup ofc. What do you think? Here's a pic of the guitar.

I can modify the pickguard to widen the bevel, no big deal. But the upside down material is something that will tweak in my brain forever and I know I will eventually pay more money to have the proper pickguard made. And that just kills me.

>>
>>68906174
All your bass Pros are literally just "low supply".
>>
>>68913300

I didn't notice until I brought it home. I'd have to call him up to complain and that just seems petty.

Also, the pickguard was just a minor thing. He was doing other work on my guitar and I just threw the pickguard out there. I wasn't really prepared and I didn't do a great job with my instructions. I didn't specify that the thickest layer is near the bottom, and I don't think I got the 30 degree bevel across. If I had been prepared I would have drawn a cross section explaining exactly what I wanted.

He also threw in some free detailing, including a refinish of the neck. So I don't want to be a dick, even though he technically didn't deliver on exactly what I asked for.

Any bassists around? I'm looking for a nice 5er fretless bass. 35'' scale, 2 octave fingerboard are basically a requirement.
I found the Sire Marcus Miller m7 for 700-800. Any opinions? Other basses in that price range that I should consider?
>>
>>68913444
Justin guitar is good enough, especially as a beginner. As much as you want to play the crazy sounding stuff you gotta learn to get the basics out the way first, although I never liked Justinguitars because he doesn't really give you much in music theory until later on so he gives you all the pieces but doesn't give you the whole picture.
Really though just keep on with justinguitar

Yeah, I don't get it either but to be fair it's kind of like having an exact replica of a Buddy Guy guitar, for example. It's cool esthetically and as long as its a good quality guitar the esthetics aren't all that important, just a kind of cool bonus feauture.

hmm that would be interesting. I had for switches in mind an on/off for each pickup and a phase switch for the middle fender pickup (that switch would be for the piezo instead) I will have to see if I can replace the switches with ekstra knobs. Maybe make it so that the knobs can be turned all the way down (that way maintain an on/off opportunity)

the trouble is that with the pickups arranged like that, you're outright turning off 2 strings at a time. The series resistance would let them get quiet, but never quite silent.

Is it normal to have ridiculous amounts of 50 Hz noise with Piezos? I hooked mine up to an oscilloscope and it is bad. I was thinking of maink a filter but since the low E is 82 Hz there is going to be some signal loss on those notes. I made a piezo humbucker (one of the piezos are not "connected" to the guitar and the signals are subtracted with an op-amp to get the pure signal). Would this be the best way to fix the noise problem?

I see everyone say that online, but my main guitar used to be one of those old thick-necked Schecters. My few shredder friends with thin necks always liked it when they tried it. only the OR100 is good out of their current lineup.

what you want is an old OR120 or better than that is a Matamp GT120.

There are a limited number of people making clones of those amps, unfortunately. The Partridge transformers are a challenge to source and they are the heart of the amps. Dunwich rarely takes orders, Dwarfcraft is only around sometimes, and the guy from Electric Amp is a literal scammer.

For stoner, I honestly recommend a metal panel 100 watt Marshall. They are plentiful and still relatively inexpensive. The later (early) Master volume 100 watt amps are good too.

Because that's what they tell you to do in books. In reality, people have slightly different ways to pop and slap. In the end, you should feel comfortable with your own technique.

great so you can buy a shitty 25 watt amplifier whose power section cannot properly reproduce the immense bass that people are likely to feed into it, whereby you have to shunt all that fartiness in your recording/live mic rig.

or you can spend less money and buy a secondhand dual rectifier and have the amp you really want.

so yeah get a mini-rectifier and never play it live un-miced.

I can't help but be irked by how often he fucks up his speech and his angsty ranting persona. Still better than fucking Jared Dines, though.

muh djent

nothing wrong with that really, but he's not much of an instructional figure, just a comedian. Spectresoundstudios does have some really helpful vidos

I second this; Bought a blackstar recently, it's great.
I have a vox too but it's hybrid so I can't really compare them.

Has some useful videos, generally backs up his opinions with his experience and science. He could do a bit better with more affirmative control groups and methodology behind his testing, but he's also not there to really hold your hand 100% either so I guess that's understandable.

He's definitely right though on most bassists in local bands being "the shitty guitar player".

>>68922973
Well honestly his angsty ranting is less of a "this just sucks" and more of a "please do something about this, realize this is a problem and fix it." It's angry, but it's also constructive.
>>
>>68923084
Djent shit, definitely. The "styles of ___" videos are played out and dry. He can shred but he's a boring guitarist with very lackluster phrasing. Also I watched one of those Shred Wars videos and it just sounded like he was trying to parrot the solos of the other guy.
>>
>>68923244
Floyd's sound bad.

2 point bridge + locking tuners will significantly improve your tuning stability without changing the sound of your guitar.

unless you really like the 80s super strat shtick.
>>
>>68923244
still better off with that than a floyd rose m8

what does /gg/ think about Epiphone Les Paul LQs? made in Japan and have a lacquer finish and a Gibson style open book headstock. I'm thinking about buying this one
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Epiphone-LQ-Les-Paul-Standard-MIJ-Made-in-Japan-Fujigen-Japan-Gibson-/172395802134?hash=item2823972e16:g:k88AAOSwNuxXZW31
any opinions?
>>
>>68923471
I'd love one that has the split diamond on there too.
>>
>>68923546
there's one like that on ebay right now
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Epiphone-Japan-Limited-Edition-Les-Paul-Custom-LQ-Electric-Free-Shipping-/322313932959?hash=item4b0b68509f:g:VIcAAOSwXeJYGMyF
only it costs over $1000 and the one I'm looking at costs $800
>>
>>68923605
I've seen them go for lower, p sure.
If you don't necessarily want an epiphone, you should look into other japan built ones like edwards, burny, tokai etc. Lots of em are great.

yeah they keep going up in price. probably because they were discontinued about 10 years ago. the other ones on ebay are priced around $1000 to $1600 right now which is to much for me. the reason I was considering one of the LQs is because it has a lacquer finish instead of poly or urethane so the paint over a headstock break could easily be fixed. they also have a long tenon neck joint which I can only seem to find on Gibson historic reissues which are like $5000

hi guys i just bought my first guitar, a epiphone dr 100 in woodbrass.com

thanks for the answer, im also afraid the guitar come fucked up of the travel from france, i heard all kind of opinions from woodbrass what do you think ? thanks dude
>>
>>68923910
they're good guitars but be warned setting up a jazzmaster takes considerable skill.

any tool can set up a stratocaster or telecaster decently well. those same people will not be able to get a jazzmaster to stay in tune.

yeah I think it's probably a good guitar I was just wondering if /gg/ had any advice or playing experience with them. it has an F in the serial number I think that means it was made in the Fujigen factory which has a reputation for high quality guitars

>>
>>68923910
try to find one in person and see for yourself.

i like mine a lot but it has issues. for the most part the build quality is great, a sizable step up from the vint modified jazzblasters, and it sounds pretty alright, plays well. but the wiring is shoddy and the bridge pickup doesn't always engage properly, the pickups themselves are a little dull and i can fart longer than the thing can sustain. the high e string floats too close to the edge of the fretboard and often rolls off when i'm fretting in the upper half of the neck .

always room for improvement but i'm nonetheless satisfied. it's the best JM you can get in the price range.
>>
