It's

The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

Might as well bump with a few of my reviews

>Caetano Veloso - Transa

Pretty cozy little MPB album overall. There’s some really nice grooves in here, with a great mixture of pop melodies and these Brazilian/tropical influences. Almost a psychedelic vibe on here on a couple of the songs that reminds me of something coming from the summer of love. Everything on this release feels more subtle/subdued and that gives this a much different atmosphere. While guys like Jorge Ben and Chico Buarque run with the samba influence, keeping their albums very upbeat, this is feels much poppier and much more on the melancholy side. Enjoyable listen overall, I just wish this was more upbeat or samba-y. Still, it was interesting to see a different side of this movement.

Algerie francaise is at the root of all things, especially mythology. It's that important.

>Sun Kil Moon - Benji

Was not a fan of this at all. I was actually surprised at how little I found myself enjoying this. The atmosphere is very dark, the singer’s voice is very melancholy, the guitar is repetitive, almost droney at times. Overall it should work. It should be something I love, this is right up my alley. I just can’t get past the lyrics. Sure, they’re incredibly personal and in the moment… but as a result I just find them to be sloppy. He ate KFC at his uncle’s funeral. Watched “Song Remains The Same”. And the mentally challenged girl down the street wanted to bathe with him. And “Dogs”, man that’s one of the most awkward love songs I’ve heard. Once again, that’s probably the point but I wasn’t a fan - it just felt… clunky. I didn’t find any of the songwriting to be impressive.

This dude is such a bummer but can’t manage to channel the incredibly personal and depressing subjects in a way I find interesting. I can see why people find his lyrics raw and intimate but I felt like they were bland. Not for me, probably won’t be revisiting this again.

[3/3]

>Snoop Dogg - Tha Doggfather

Sigh. Like basically every album of his except his debut, this is bloated, way too long and disappointing. Snoop isn’t nearly as lyrical as he was on Doggystyle and the production feels flat and derivative. Most of the beats feel like they could’ve been created by any average producer in ‘96. In just three years, G-funk sputtered out and this album is really a representation of that fact. While this has some sub-par production, Snoop somehow managed to get worse from 2/3 of No Limit’s plug-and-chug attempts afterwards. Clearly a money grab by Suge Knight or Snoop’s lazy attempt to fulfill his record contract. Either way, it isn’t very enjoyable.

There are a few nice moments on here though. The first few tracks are nice and groovy, Charlie Wilson has some nice hooks and Tha Dogg Pound has some solid features. And “Gold Rush” is way better than it should be. But considering this is prime Snoop on the biggest label in hip-hop (well... right before it collapsed), this is a pretty big disappointment. Not his worst album though. Dude’s career has been a huge waste of talent (maybe not all his fault though) and it’s actually been a bummer exploring his discography.

Nah, that would be too much work.
If I listen to them again I give them another rotation.
So: Peter Cusack is my most recent listen (ie right now) and Dimensions and Extensions is the oldest, which will be replaced when I listen to something new.
I think it's more revealing than the last.fm charts because it shows the order you listen, for the most part.

New Dean Ween album is fun, just not very good.

Half done with this chart, but nothing really worth talking about so far that I've heard recently. Rain temple is just bad ambient with trap beats sometimes.

Just listened to Bauhaus' Bela Lugosi is Dead, and while probably not really something that I feel would catch most of /daily/'s ear, I absolutely adored it. It's simple and has a linear, satisfying progression. Add that to that specific vibe and you have a Fish delight. Good stuff.

my cat is named abbey, and she's a russian blue! this is a concept album about my cat!

also i used big star for my senior quote

Abbey Lincoln - Abbey Is Blue (1959)
>vocal jazz

Good stuff, most vocal jazz doesn't really go beyond being just pleasant but there's a really great balance between the chill and the fiery here. Most of the fire lies in Lincoln's vocal delivery, she has a gift of making every single word she sings resonate to an insane degree, every word has power and passion behind it. The instrumentals are nice, but don't quite reach the level of Lincoln. "Afro-Blue" features the best performance from both, but the difference is that Lincoln never drops off, the band does, somewhat. Maybe I should give We Insist! a re-listen, I want to hear Lincoln's voice with a more active band.

3.0

Malicorne - Almanach (1976)
>progressive folk, auvergnat folk music

I don't like this all too much and I'm not sure why. Modern folk with medieval vibes has never been something I could get into, and this is no exception. The weird thing is, normally folk like this is chessy and overdone. This isn't. It keeps it's medieval elements very subtle and tasteful, but in lieu of cheesy there's just a lot of plodding, overly long songs, and a complete lack of any emotional impact. Everything here /should/ work, but I feel absolutely nothing while listening to it. Solid performances throughout, and the a cappella is pretty as hell, but unless you've got a big predisposition to the style it's hard to get into this.

Sound on Sound festival was neat, I want to tell y'all a little about it.
First, we got there early, so we were wandering around, and walked up to a small stage just before Anthony fantano live interviewed clippng. It was interesting, he's actually a solid interviewer, and clippng had some interesting things to say, made me want to hear their new record.
A little while later, I saw clippng's set, they were stellar. Great sonic textures and some cool improv, but they lack a certain weight to their music to really move a crowd though. Only one or two songs really slapped- the mosh pits were neat.
Later I saw the tail end of Guided by Voices, totally boring.
Death Grips was absurd. Mostly white crowd, maybe 60/40 male female. Everyone was losing their minds. No mosh pit, not enough room for that, too much forward momentum.
Some guy was trying to help me get him to the front. He asked me if I was a 'true fan' and he said he was from r/deathgrips. He brought his DEATH license plate with him, was trying to get up front to have it signed, as a wedding proposal gift to his GF or something like that.
I seriously doubt he even got seen.
They opened with Fuck Who's Watching which was a surprise. They also played No Love, Up My Sleeves, and You Might Think He Loves You, so I had the best time ever. At the end Zach threw his drumsticks in the crowd. I caught it- but another guy also had his fist clenched on it. We quickly decided to snap it and each take half. He was a great guy, total buddy.
Run the Jewels was good, but I didn't stay for the whole thing.
Fidlar, I wasn't familiar with, and they opened with a cover of Sabotage by the beastie boys. I don't care about fidlar so much now.
Cool time.

Now I'm home, listening to Vampire Weekend cos givingbear told me to. It's ok.

He was a nice guy, but carelessly optimistic. Death Grips didn't even talk to the crowd.

It's a vic firth stick. Not a nylon tip either, so it chips and loses feel quicker than a nylon tip drumstick. Pretty in line with zach's style

good god I've been using this same freeform chart for four months

and i've almost been doing these for a year!

Jeff Rosenstock - Worry (2016)
>power pop, pop punk, indie rock

Really overhyped, no? It's really good for what it is, it's got that triumphant-yet-still-sad pop punk aesthetic down pat, but there's really nothing of note here. The way all of the tracks seamlessly sequence into each other is cool, but the effect this has is dampened if the songs the songs themselves are kinda unremarkable. There are some fine melodies and singalong hooks here and there, and the guitar work is great and appropriately raw and noisy, but this style has been done better by a lot of other bands. Not even just older bands like Weezer or Teenage Fanclub, even newer artists like Tony Molina and Joyce Manor do it with more energy, urgency, and freshness. A fine album that accomplishes everything it sets out to do, and certainly better than most other modern records of its style, but it's just got nothing to say.

2.5-

i just posted a review on RYM about 10 seconds ago. Kodama is worth a shot, but I gotta say that after a couple of listens it just isn't extreme enough to please me (even tho my taste is p vanilla). I think your noise rock/industrial background is gonna make it sound like Nickelback tier overproduction.

Pretty much the wealth of early post-punk has that exact vibe. Even the normie shit like Joy Division. I get the same vibe of nervousness from This Heat, PiL, Siekera, The Birthday Party, and a lot of Yegor Letov's projects. Any post-punk you can find that isn't New Wave/Jangle Pop is what you're probably looking for.

If you mean that they had some of the best radio singles for their time then I would have to agree. But saying anything beyond that is far too much. A good majority of their songs are forgettable and bland.

My younger brother made an album, and I think it would be cool if you guys reviewed it. He was really proud, and so am I. He's never made a large effort like this before. Any reviews would be cool. I give it like, 6/10 which is pretty good considering. He always explains there is a lot of "nuance" and shit, but I don't really deal in the avant guard or experimental scenes. Songs: Ohia - Hecla & Griper (1997)
>singer/songwriter, contemporary folk, alt-country

I'd expect something more harrowing and bare-bones from Molina at this point in his career, but this is shockingly full-bodied and rocky. It lacks the emotional intensity and impact of Molina's best works, and it's too short to really make a lasting impression, but this is a damn fine EP with some damn fine tunes. Molina definitely knows his way around a melanchonic melody, and his passionate, world-weary voices sings them incredibly well. He never disappointed, and I'll always be saddened by the fact that we'll never hear his music again.

Drive Like Jehu - Drive Like Jehu (1991)
>post-hardcore, math rock

Doesn't stack up well against Yank Crime, but these guys were absolute masters of their craft and this album still shows all of them at their absolute height. The instrumental work here is just fucking astounding, the guitars are so anxious and jittery but so heavy-hitting and angular; the bass work is free-flowing yet still strictly regimented and groovy; and the drum work is everything I aspire to do on my own drums. The tunes themself are this albums weakest link, they're not bad by any means, they just kinda blend together and they lack the memorability every single track on Yank Crime has. Still, these guys were the kings.

3.0+

Good Night & Good Morning - Narrowing Type (2012)
>slowcore, ambient

Totally, utterly one note, but a very pretty and dreamy note. I suppose I could deal with the lack of variety more if there was more variety in the songwriting, but there's really no variety there either, melodies sound the same and the guitar parts are all but identical. For prettiness, this is second to none. The melodies are gorgeous and the general sound is just so comforting and lovely. This can't excuse lazy songwriting and lazy album structuring, but it certainly helps the album's case.

2.5-

Peter Lang - The Thing at the Nursery Room Window (1973)
>american primitivism

Underwhelming primitivism, does the style well but doesn't add anything original or exciting to it. Lang isn't exactly a compositional genius, he uses a lot of the same melodies and motifs Fahey used, so they're still great and they're performed well in Lang's hands, but this really does come off as nothing more than an imitation of Fahey. He's still got insane chops, the more fast-paced tracks are some of the more thrilling sounds I've heard come out of this genre. Essentially, this isn't a must-have record in the primitivism canon, but I love the style to death, and Lang does it well.

new chart time, fuck the monthly charts, that felt like work

Vashti Bunyan - Lookaftering

Neat little folk album from that one lady who released a really good album in the 70s and then disappeared for decades. Not near as interesting and well-composed as her debut, but there are some cool songs on here. The musicians she gets to perform on here are great as well. These include Devendra Banhart in his pre-indie meme prime, Joanna "best songwriter of the 21st century" Newsom, and le meme composer Max Richter. Highlights include Turning Backs, If I Were, Feet of Clay, and Wayward Hum. Check this out if you like comfy folk, regardless of the dubs peppered throughout.

Re-listened to all of the Smiths (again) recently. I like everything less than I used to except for their s/t, which I found a new appreciation for some of the tracks I never found before. Animal Collective and Vashti Bunyan - Prospect Hummer

Wow! What a pleasant, lush little EP. I really enjoyed that, awesome vocals, great instrumentation with well utilized effects, and really nice loops on the third track. Sung Tongs is my favorite Animal Collective LP, so I'm not sure why I ever heard this, it's basically an extension of that style. But yeah, really nice, I wish it was a bit longer.

GOOD.

Just gonna talk about the stuff that feels worth writing anything about.

>Maнipнa Myзикa
Pretty fun, but needlessly repetitive prog. There's variation and then there's playing the same song six times in a row.
7

>ハナタラシ - s/t
Usually I don't really enjoy noise, not because I can't "handle" the noise, it's just that I find repeating the same pulses for an hour or however is usually just a snoozefest. Noise from soundscapes/experiments is where it's at, none of that bro-noise shit. This was the only interesting of the three noise albums I listened to this week for that exact reason. Would recommend this for the noiseboyz out there.
7

>Bopoбьинaя opaтopия (Sparrow Oratorium)
One of the few slav albums I heard recently that felt worth it. Really fun prog album that I think if it were a little less restrained and variable would definitely piss me off to some extent. The opera-prog shit usually isn't for me, but the way its spread throughout the album and used sparingly (along with its other prog-like elements) help to give it some really distinct flair. Would rec for anyone looking for
8

>かなしばり - Haniwa-Chan
Fan-FUCKING-tastic. Some of the vocal sections sort of reminded me of Guernica, but it was much more than that. Definitely one of the most original and exciting pop albums I've ever heard. I'm not sure this blew my mind as much as I'm expressing in this write-up, but I'll be damned if it wasn't satisfying as shit.
9

>Revolutionary Opera "The Flower Girl"
North Korea a best country. Fantastic and variable opera that uses a great deal of surprising elements like synthesizer. Surprisingly good.
8

>Hawaii: Part II
I still don't like this. Hell, I don't even like it more than I did last time. I enjoyed the second track slightly, but otherwise I just hated it again. Best thing I guess I can say is it doesn't remind me as much as Owl City this time around, but the vocalist reminds me of the guy from Panic at the Disco kinda. Sorry :/

I'm not doing a very good job of doing this chart daily am I?

>Wreckless Eric - Wreckless Eric
Sometimes the lyrics can be a little too crass but it makes for a decently fun record. Saxophone was good on a few tracks but on others it was just cheesy. I prefer the Peel Session versions of the tracks I've heard of off this, the looser feeling fits this kind of pop-punk better. Still, 3/5.

>James White and The Blacks - Off White
Not quite as other James Chance stuff I've heard but still the kind of discordant dance I like. Nothing does quite match the intensity of the No New York tracks though, I wish a couple of tracks were just slightly more aggressive. It's probably down to the fact Chance doesn't do much singing at all on this one apart from the opener Contort Yourself and having a conversation with a woman solely communicating in moans on the 2nd track Stained Sheets. 4/5 just about

>Patrik Fitzgerald - Treasures from the Wax Museum
I'm not sure the lyricism is amazing nor the instrumentation but something about this 77 min compilation kept me interested anyway. Much more folk than punk but the two genres aren't that far removed in their DIY and social commentary aspects I guess. 3.5/5

Scientist - The Best Dub Album in the World... (1980)
>dub

The title isn't that far off, honestly. I didn't really expect much from this, the low rating and the low number of ratings on RYM really threw me off, but this is some damn good stuff. I sometimes wish it would focus more on the groove, but it puts it's focus more on soundscaping and interesting production techniques, which Scientist obviously pulls off with finesse. The percussion on this thing is insane too, what this album may lack in earth-shattering bass grooves it definitely makes up for with it's layers upon layers of percussion. The best dub album in the world will forever be Playing It Cool & Playing It Right, but this is definitely a contender for that title.

Kaleidoscope - Side Trips (1967)
>psychedelic rock, folk rock

Half decent psych, half absolutely baffling jug band blues rock. I don't even know what these tracks /are/, they're interesting enough to not be truly unlistenably awful, but they're almost insultingly goofy, and they kill the momentum the folky psych tracks have going on. Which is a shame because the psych here is actually quite good. Maybe a tad derivative, but they've got the aesthetic down pat and they mix in the folkiness very well. Good at best, awfully confusing at worst, an okay listen as a whole.

Bumpin with some reviews

[1/2]

>Spacemen 3 - The Perfect Prescription

I absolutely love the atmosphere of this record, it’s so great. Like most shoegaze/neo-psych records, it’s filled with nice poppy melodies and a comfy blanket of guitar effects. Though it’s a lot noisier, this reminds me a lot of Galaxie 500, with some catchy riffs, a nice atmosphere and a bit of an eccentric singer. There’s a bit more of a garage rock influence on some of these tracks, which was a nice change of pace compared to most albums in this realm. Right up my alley, with only one or two missteps along the way.

4.0/5

>The Fall - Hex Hour Enduction Hour

Good listen overall. The atmosphere on here is quite noisy and post-punky, which works well with the angsty, rebellious lyrics. Most of the tracks on here are towards the lengthy side, with an average of about five and a half minutes. Since the tracks are a bit longer, they tend to get a bit repetitive, as a couple stretch on, meandering bit too much towards the end. While this works for the most part, it’s probably the biggest thing holding it back.

The length sometimes works to this album’s advantage though. The two part “Winter” flows perfectly together and is probably the best track on the album. And longer tracks like “Fortress/Deer Park” and “And This Day” are great additions that build into these anxious, noisy and repetitive masterpieces that get their points across. A few duds, “Who Makes The Nazis” in particular keep this from getting a higher score but it’s a fairly consistent, very enjoyable release. I’ve dug what I’ve heard from The Fall so far.

3.5/5

>>68930566

[2/2]

>Sly & The Family Stone - Stand!

Good lord this is some groovy shit. Pretty much every song on here is outstanding, with a nice mish-mash of influences, like jazz, soul, funk and psych rock (which was unexpected). Easiest to call this funk though. Though there are some obvious rebellious songs on here, this is mostly positive with a collaborative approach between the musicians - it feels like a giant jam session at times. And the grooves on here are just so upbeat, as they scream in joy and praise - in an almost gospel-y way on some tracks.

“Sex Machine” drags on way too long and “Don’t Call Me Nigger, Whitey” is a bit grating after awhile (though the thought is good). But everything else on here is somewhere on the realm of spectacular - phenomenal, I absolutely love it. Funk/soul like this album has this collaborative, harmonious and happy-go-lucky element that makes it some of my favorite music.

Phenomenal, 4.5/5

>Daniel Johnston - The What of Whom
More of the most honest and vulnerable lyrics mixed with ultra lo-fi production. There are a few stand out songs, but i just think its not as good as songs of pain or 1990. It also doesn't have the weird experimental stuff like on Hi, how are you. There is quite a bit of filler and the skits don't really add much in my opinion. blue triangle/10

>Magnolia Electric Co. - The Magnolia Electric Co
I prefer Jason Molina's stuff when it's just him singing with a guitar instead of the full band seen on this album. I think his voice works a lot better when it's exposed with lots of silence and drawn out moments. The country twang is also a little bit much for me, but it wasn't so pronounced that it ruined the album for me. There is still some really great songwriting on this and the instrumental accompaniment does have some really beautiful passages throughout. blue triangle/10

>Nina Simone - In Concert (1964)
Opens with the slow, soulful I Loves You, Porgy which is a little bit short with only 2:34 min and features a tipsy sounding Nina over soft piano playing . Plan Gold Ring is a bit darker (deep piano, drums) while Nina sings about her everlasting love for a married man. The whole atmosphere is a bit dark, which is even topped by the next song (Pirate Jenny). The Kurt Weill song really brings her manic, aggressive side to shine. Her voice cuts through the backing piano sharper than I've ever heard her before, switching between almost whispering and grandiose singing effortlessly. She legit sounds a bit crazy sometimes, which makes this one of the best songs I've heard by her so far. Thinks take a brighter turn with Old Jim Crow, which is nice and energetic but again a little bit short. Don't Smoke in Bed sounds melancholic at first, but it has an underlying aggressiveness with its repeated "Don't Smoke In Bed"that makes it almost sound like she secretly wants her ex-lover to forget that advice. On Go Limp Nina Simone definitely sounds a bit drunk, at first the whole song sounds a bit out of place with its humourous lyrics, but it has a serious theme to it: a girl loses her innocence to civil rights protester and gets pregnant, concluding that it's not a problem as long as movement is succesful (the baby not having to"march like his da-da and me"). On the closer, Mississippi Goddamn, Nina gets angry again.
1/2
>>
>>68935743
2/2
It's also about the civil rights movement, especially about the killings and persecution black people had to suffer from. The upbeat instrumentals contrast with the harsh reality Nina sings about, even claiming to losing her faith due to the conditions. The backing chants intensify the urgency of the song and makes this a powerful call to join the protest. It's another highlight on this live album.
The reduced instrumentations allows Nina Simone's voice to shine, the songs are fantastic and everyone plays on point. The recording quality is a bit lackluster, but this adds a rawness to the album that fits to the rather grim topics of the second side. I just wish it was a bit longer, 36 min is not even nearly enough of prime Nina Simone. 8/10
