The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

>MF DOOM - Operation: Doomsday (1999)
I'm not really a fan of Doom's voice on here, somehow it sounds different than what I'm used to (somehow higher, mumblier and rougher at the same time, but maybe it's just the way the vocals are recorded). The production is mostly jazz and 80s sample focused and laid back for the most part. The incredible flow Doom is known for is already visible in traces and he clearly got talent and hunger, but imo it will take a few years until he has mastered this style. Another problem is this album's length. 5/10

Crying - Beyond the Fleeting Gales (2016)
>power pop, progressive pop

Wow, they moved in the exact direction I wanted them to move, that /never/ happens! 2013's Get Olde is a solid EP, but the heavy chiptune influence is a liability to the songs, not a welcome addition. By heavily reducing the chiptune sound, they deliver an album full of rock-solid, sugary, feel-good power pop tunes, with a shockingly heavy influence from prog. This prog influence is honestly the album's worst aspect, it adds a bit, but it more often than not distracts from the wonderful pop songwriting rather than adding anything meaningful to the album on its own. The straight up power pop, however, is total bliss. The hooks are memorable and catchy as fuck; the slight chiptune influence (rather than an overbearing, all-encompassing chiptune sound) is a nice touch; Santos is still one of the best vocalists working today; and everything has this really uplifting, triumphant sound that I totally dig. I knew these guys had potential, and they're actually realizing it!

>The Gerogerigegege - Hell Driver
I really enjoyed the piano bits at the beginning of the album and at the end. They were minimalistic, but had a mysterious quality to them that made me want to keep listening. The spoken word/ field recording bits were somewhat interesting, but didnt really go anywhere. The 30 minutes of high pitched screeching with random coughs and banging pots and pans was pretty awful. I first tried to just listen for the small changes in the drone to pass the time, but that didn't produce anything meaningful. Next i just tried to just be absorbed by the noise, but it didnt have a crushing wall of sound to just override all the senses. At high volume and at low volume it was annoying. If they had integrated the piano, field recordings and noise throughout the whole thing it would have been much more engaging. yellow circle/10

Nightstick - Ultimatum (1998)
>sludge metal, stoner metal, noise rock

They tap into something great on this album, but I don't think I've ever heard an album as unecessarily long as this one. The riffs and the general sound are both extraordinary, but most tracks run upwards of 7 minutes, they get pretty old by the end. The shorter tracks are the best ones here, they're just long enough to create an absolutely perfect atmosphere, while still knocking my socks off with some sinister, noisy riffs. The more out-there, experimental elements are pretty cool, even though they don't add much. Some tracks are purely noisy, industrial soundscaping, and others make heavy use of political samples. Interesting and fun to listen to, but inconsequential and not as good as the more strictly sludge tracks. An overlong mixed bag, but a good one.

Well I'm ignorant and expected this to actually involve harps not realising Sacred Harp is an american choral tradition. And I have to say I'd have preferred what I expected, it's a kinda interesting for a couple of tracks but musically there isn't much going on. I can appreciate religious music being a non-believer but this was just boring. 2/5

Also listened to The Sound's second album, bit of a let down, doesn't have that frenetic, nervous atmosphere of the first.

Oh boy, the rare Jangle 2-fer!

Hans Otte - Buch Der Klange
>Minimalism
Really threading the needle between 'beautiful and immersive' and 'repetitive and boring'.
These solo piano pieces are well composed and performed, but seem to be lacking a bit of substance. Oftentimes the pieces don't justify their length or fulfill the targeted immersive feel.
Certainly a worthwhile piece, and one I will revisit, but one I doubt I'll fall in love with.

6.5 /10

Henry Flynt - Back Porch Hillbilly Blues
>Prim, Country Blues
Pretty much what you'd expect from the title.
An interesting listen, but the concept loses it's novelty very quickly, especially the longer tracks. The repetitive drone textures are nice, and the wailing singing and humming keep this from being painfully repetitive.
The two shorter tracks are great and packed with interesting nuances, while the long tracks rely too heavily on the overarching drone lines to create something interesting.

Sup /daily/? Gonna bump w/ some more reviews

[1/2]

>Swirlies - They Spent Their Wild Youthful Days…

Another great shoegaze album that’s right up my alley. Lots of reverb drenched guitar, poppy melodies and a cozy atmosphere. There’s a couple moments when this gets louder and approaches a bit of noise rock but for the most part, this is pretty mellow and comfortable. It’s a nice mix of these influences and makes it interesting enough without ruining the atmosphere. There’s also a bit of stuff on here that gets electronic and almost Krautrock-y (“You Can’t Be Told It…” comes to mind) and reminds me a bit of Stereolab in that way.

Nice listen, not much else to say other than this was a nice, cozy listen.

3.5+/5

>Tim Buckley - Goodbye and Hello

Solid sunshine folk/pop from the ‘60s, with some very nice melodies, etc. As usual, Buckley uses this album to show off his incredible range as a vocalist. But he doesn’t go into the screaming, yelping or moaning territory - this is pretty straightforward. Everything on here is pretty normal compared to his later albums but there’s a nice touch of psychedelic influences. “Carnival Song” has a little circus sample in the background to give it a bit of an off-kilter flair and “Pleasant Street” has nice hand-drumming that works with the atmosphere. There’s a lot of similar touches on here that make this a solid listen.

This is a very enjoyable listen even though it lacks the experimental touches of Lorca and Starsailor. Proves that he can do both, which is impressive. And “Hallucinations” might be my favorite Buckley song so far.

short lil write-up

Flesh Field - Strain (2004)
>EBM

Produced very well, but I don't care how nice the album sounds when the music itself is just standard early/mid-2000s industrial dreck. There are some nice beat-driven moments here and there, but the vocals are horrendous, the general sound has been done to death, and it can't shake the sheen of over-production whenever it tries to get more raw. Not a great listen.

Don Cherry never disappoints man. He always creates these awesome free jazz records with a huge variety of influences. Just looking at the credits, you’ll notice that there’s vibraphone, flutes, gongs, and a whole host of gamelan/eastern instruments. Cherry and his band use these elements to create another massive, powerful listen.

Part I of the suite uses the instruments to create pretty much pure chaos. Gongs crash awkwardly, horns scream in the background and these xylophone-like instruments clang around uncomfortably. There isn’t much of a groove reached throughout the course of this track but there’s moments where the musicians reach a bit of a consensus. They get in sync occasionally but as soon as they reach that common ground, they part ways and continue in this cacophonous exercise.

Part II, on the other hand, has a lot more moments of harmony. The band starts off aggressively free, again, with screeching instruments, a bit of yelping and polyrhythmic drumming. But everyone settles down and creates a mellower, more spiritual passage of music. It still feels very organic and powerful but it’s less painful of a listen. The freeness of this jazz ebbs and flows and it’s neat to hear them break apart the music and build it back together again. There’s also this incredible section that stretches from about 16:00 to about 20:00 where the band’s chemistry becomes apparent. They erupt into this powerful, bluesy track that I love and Cherry in particular kills it on the trumpet. I wish I could find a version of this that was broken into individual tracks because that section is just phenomenal.

What I like about Cherry is his ability to blend chaos with more groove-based tunes. He proves that he can break apart music, rebel in his own musical manner. After he does so, he creates these gorgeous passages of music with a number of influences.

Phenomenal. 5/5

Randomly found this single/EP on RYM and it's so awesome. Classic '90s G-funk, the beats are outstanding.

But I can't find anything else out about this dude. He might be from San Diego, but that also could be an unrelated artist, seeing as everything I find is from like '08 on. Literally all I could find was this release.

Long shot but anyone know any more about this guy? Really liked the little I heard from him so far. Maybe he disappeared, died or stopped rapping after this but I wish I could find more. Definitely recommended, even though it's only a couple tracks.

So twee-jazz gets to be a thing now? Okay.

Seriously though, this was fantastic. Almost every song was instantly enjoyable and had a really nice progression to it. May not be for any jazz-purists but I think most people who even slightly like the genre will get a huge kick out of it. Vocals may bother some, but hell, I loved it.

VERY solid Japanese noise album. Usually I don't mind the shoddy recording for an album like this, but there were some very emotional moments I feel that were somewhat held back by the otherwise fantastic performances. Has the potential to be a Poseur-classic, honestly. LRD-boyz hear this ASAP.

I'd like to think none, although sometimes the ways in which the artist themselves acts in a public forum certainly plays a part in my judgement of their work
the easy example is Kanye, although I do recognise genuine artistic merit in his case, lines like "I think me and taylor still might have sex" are inexcusable
another example is The World is a Beautiful Place and I am No Longer Afraid to Die. If you are unaware they took to twitter to endorse the killing of (American) policemen, which is a not ok thing to do I don't think I need to tell you... That informs my condemnation of their music in a pretty big way; to me it's just twinkly emo bullshit and I'd probably give it a four if it weren't for their shit-person-ness
Another one is Bon Iver, who gets to act like a visionary because of a production myth

>The Golden Palominos - Dead Inside (1996)
Spooky spokenword poems (spookenword lol) that are sometimes a little bit too direct and literal for my taste recited by Nicole Blackman (nice voice) over a background that ranges from ambient to trip hop. Sometimes the spoken word changes to half-singing. Definitely not bad (it reminds me a bit of Coil sometimes), but I'm usually not someone who spends a lot of attention to lyrics, which means I'm probably not the target audience. With almost an hour runtime, it's too long though. 5/10

Kodama was nice, but yeah, there was alot of potential for more, especially during Neige's growling
New Deerhoof was a bit of a disappointment, it's missing any catchy remarkable tunes
G.L.O.S.S. is cool as a concept and it's nice to have a band like them, still in the end it's just basic raw punk

Edu Lobo - Edu Lôbo (1973)
>MPB

The most innovative and out-there album I've ever heard in this style, which is both a postive and a negative aspect. The a-side, which is much more grounded in the typical MPB sound, is decent, but often bogged down by some unnecessary freaky experimental flourishes. Lobo can write a pop tune, but he can't bring his talent with experimental songwriting into his pop tunes. The b-side is a monolith, Lobo completely sheds his poppy skin and makes a massive, dense 20-minute long piece that blows the a-side out of the water. There are choruses repeating religious mantras, walls of orchestral sound, it's really cool, and great proof that Lobo is probably a better composer than he is a pop songwriter, despite how good he is at that. The poppy a-side and the experimental, orchestral b-side often clash, especially when the experimental songwriting inflitrates the pop, but this is worth a listen for the b-side alone.

3.0-

Dorothy Carter - Troubadour (1976)
>contemporary folk

Pleasant and beautiful music to the very core. The dulcimer is a fucking gorgeous instrument, and it plays Carter's melodies simply yet with a lot of technicality. The fact that Carter is incredible at her instrument doesn't overwhelm the songwriting, it compliments it. Her voice is a bit grating, however, and the album is definitely monotonous, but it's a lovely album nonetheless.

No, really, there shouldn't be a fucking shibboleth to keep people from voting in a democracy. That's not how it works. There are already big enough socioeconomic hurdles in the way even in a country like Sweden, where we have something like 95%+ vote turnout.

It's not a straw man, if anything it would be a slippery slope, but it's not. Requiring registration is a shibboleth that prevents people, particularly those of lower socioeconomic status with lower access to free information, from voicing their opinions, which is their democratic right (in any actually democratic country)

Fucking ameriburgers.
>>
>>68958906

Sure, it should be easy and available to everyone, but if you could text or email your vote in 10 seconds, the ramifications of that (fraud, manipulation, etc) would threaten democracy a lot more than having to register.

The US currently has some of the lowest voter turnouts of any industrialized nation
That is not a good thing
The basis of democracy is the ability for the people to make decisions themselves
Creating more obstacles to weed out those you see as undesirable and unworthy of voting is in direct violation of those principles
This isn't a meritocracy, there's a reason polling literacy tests were abandoned a hundred years ago
>>

>human operators are perfect and cannot be altered fraudulently
Nice one.

There are pretty fucking safe ways of identifying yourself electronically in developed countries, such as BankID. I guess that kind of thing doesn't exist in Ameristhan.

Less free time to do so, less freedom of information that allows them to even know they need to register, less possibility for them to do it because they lack the means to (such as a computer and internet connection, assuming it can even be done online. If not, it's even worse).

Shibboleths like this always prevent people of lower socioeconomic status first and foremost.

I listened to some of that Don Cherry record, it's actually astounding! I was unsure initially but it's great. Gonna finish it now.
Also, triple six mafia's underground vol. 1 is still growing on me, so perfectly spooky

>Get all this fucking election talk out of daily
No, we're actually talking about something for once, instead of just making a few posts about music that no one reads and shitposting terrible maymays because ironic shitposting is so hilarious lmao.
>>
>>68959484
I have a test in an hour so I can't continue this right now, but those arguments are laughable.
>no time or means to vote
>less free time than white people
lmao
>>
>>68958612
>you should make voting as EASY as possible.

Yeah, totally agree, there's major issues in the US voting system. That being one of them.

>>68959231
>Please explain how it's harder for a black lower class person to register than a white CEO and I'll agree with you.

Here's some quick facts about Florida (a swing state):

More than 10% of the state is disenfranchised.

That includes almost a QUARTER of all African American/black population who aren't allowed to vote. Nationwide, it's 1 in 13, compared to 1 in 56 non-black

Also Rick Scott (governor) refused to extend voter registration while a category 5 hurricane ripped through the state. While this impacted everyone in the state, it likely had a bigger impact on poorer people who struggled to recover from damages or had less time to get off work to register, less access to technology/transportation, etc. Took a federal court to eventually overturn that decision and I wouldn't be surprised if shit like this happens a decent amount.

That doesn't bring in voter ID laws, which are an issue in many places throughout the US.

It's a definite problem. Florida might be an extreme example but there are issues that keep people, especially of worse socioeconomic status, from voting.

Sorry, I'll get off my soapbox now
>>
>>68959549
I didn't say white people, I said people of lower socioeconomic status. You know, the people who are most affected by this kind of hinderance to voting. By making it more difficult to vote, you're not "excluding dum people" (as if that would be a good argument, it's a democracy, not a meritocracy), you're just making it difficult for people who have less means, such as low income people and marginalized groups, to express their democratic rights.

The fact that your only response is "lmao" really shows how little thought you have even put into this issue.
>>
>>68959462
Glad to hear you liked that Cherry record, it's quickly becoming one of my favorites!

Also, hell yeah that Three Six record is awesome
>>
>>68959598
I just explained I'm studying for a test right now and can't shitpost all my time away on here. I'll be happy to continue this another time.
I already agreed that registration isn't a good thing, I'd like to know why you think that ID shouldn't be required though. I would think buying a bottle of wine should be less restrictive than voting, no? How would you prevent non-citizens from voting under that system?
>>
>>68959687
I haven't said a fucking word about ID, and I won't because I don't know in detail how it works.
>>
>>68959715
Meant that to Woolite, apologies.
Also: not engaged politically =/= dumb
>>
>>68959760
People of lower socioeconomic status also have lower chances of being more politically engaged and informed (less time and access to resources). That doesn't mean they should be excluded from voting due to arbitrary shibboleths put in place by people of higher socioeconomic status.
>>
>>68959760
Would you seriously disqualify the entire population of the United States from voting?

Id should be required but exactly what id is acceptable in the US is the problem.
It varies state by state but in a majority of states you at least have to have a photo ID, which means those who don't have the time or money to obtain a drivers license or passport are automatically barred from voting.
Also in some states they don't even accept student ID's while at the same time accepting NRA membership cards.
The dismantling of registration completely is a bad idea I agree, but rather an automatic registration that happens when a US citizen turns 18 would be better solution.
>>
>>68959808
Last post today.
I agree with most of the things you're saying, but it's inevitable that certain people will have a bit harder time voting. Some people don't have cars. Trades people and business owners are losing money going to the polls. Blind/old/fat/disabled people have obvious difficulties.
At the end of the day. it's on the individual, and EVERY legal individual has the means and ability to vote.

>>68959888
Thanks man
>>
>>68960016
>it's inevitable that certain people will have a bit harder time voting
Yes, and that's why you work to remove as many obstacles as you can to make it possible for as many as possible to cast their vote. It's not a difficult concept, is it?

>>68959983
Are there no cheap-ish interstate viable IDs available?
>>
>>68959983

How does being a student prove you're a US citizen lmao ever heard of international students?

>>68960032
I suppose I agree with your main point; I just hate how the act of voting is so pushed down our throats (especially young people). You can participate in a democracy without voting, and that's what people who aren't actively engaged in politics should do.

Everybody might have equal opportunity, but the fact that so many deliberate, and sometimes unintentional, barriers are placed in front of certain groups to dissuade them from casting is what is the real Issue with the system.
>>68960032
No not really. Social security is the only real thing, but so many states require photo id that usually that isn't accepted.

It's by your registration, they access your legal documentation through the computer at the point destination.

Yep, it is.

>while the very act of not voting and choosing to not participate IS participating (albeit not effectively)
Not really, no. It is the choice of not participating. It's still important to have this choice in a democratic nation, but it's absolutely not participating.

>Also American is the adopted demonym of people residing in the United States you dense cunt.
Americans, ladies and gentlemen.

Well if Jangle the dangles is leaving now, the discussion is gonna die because he's the only person posting controversial opinions. What a shame. Anyone playing the Skyrim Special Edition? I'm having a lot of fun with it. Much more than with the original, because I'm more or less just ignoring the main quest and roleplaying a couple of characters doing a shitload of minor quests. CGP Grey's latest video had some explanations for why that can't really exist, and it sounded pretty credible. Then again, he's made videos based on Germs, Gems and Steel and goes completely against mainstream scholarly economists' opinions on automation, so it might be completely bullshit as well.
>>
>>68960470
>first-past-the-post
>two party system
Are you implying that either of these two elements would be better with just one?

I mostly agree with the rest of what you've been saying ITT, but I would argue a first-past-the-post system gets much worse after more parties are added.

Unless America were to drastically alter its voting system, there aren't many options that make sense except for a two party system.

Two party system is a natural consequence of first-past-the-post and winner takes it all. Which is absolute shit.

A wild review appears through all the election talk!

Today I start my chort

>Mili - Miracle Milk

The formula here is a kind of super-sweet smooth childlike singer and many bouncy instruments, like bouncy piano, bouncy violin. It's all so delicate-sounding but I think it works because they either sound like little lullabies or caffeine-fuelled celebrations. If you've listened to Audio Safari or Bluedawn and liked them, then this has the matching world-in-a-bubble vibe.

There seems to be a knack of negatives becoming positives by some kind of clever strategy. The lyrics are bad, but somehow the way the singer sounds so young, it comes across endearing, like a fairy learning to speak or something. Also, the instruments are quite clearly VSTs, but the precious, jumpy nature of the compositions makes it sound less plasticky and more like a tiny music box.

I would say check this out if you're after a bit of whimsical fun with bizarre lyrical subjects and a youthful demeanour. It's the musical equivalent of a gingerbread house; sweet and dainty but quite clearly from the realm of fairy tales.

>Score

The joke is that Mozart is shit but due to marketing by DG and Decca and exposure through popular culture he gets more attention than he deserves. I could say, "Mozart resolves trill cadence into tonics as a compositional crutch and his constant use of major scale arpeggios is harmonically lazy" and a shitposter would respond by saying, "Further proof that Mozart is underrated." It allows them to deflect criticism while contributing nothing.
