>>
>>68882904

If I didn't apply a filter you for sure wouldn't, The song initially started with a catchy but very generic synth melody :-D I was so high, damn... when I've finished the track I stood by the window and listened to it, it was night. I couldn't really understand what I've done yet but it felt not only great, but also transcending and widening.

Best moment while recording: I got kind of afraid of my hands moving like automatically over the keyboard (I can get precise and insanelly fast like a machine while being on weed) and started to check if I actually move my right hand by myself because I'm actually left handed, haha. If you listen to the whole song you notice passages where a 12 (I guess)-Note loop is played manually at sometimes different syncopatic variations for like more than a minute and stuff, I learned that while being high on weed some months ago and I think one of these were the one where I just though "what the heck is happening in here again, my hands move like automatic")

In my personal opinion it needs to be shortened though, a little bit maybe, but I won't do it because the track is finished.

So, I just want to make sure I understand compression. Basically, if I have a track that is clipping or loud in a few small parts, is this a case that I would use compression?

>>
>>68885465
>I shouldn't be in a prod thread
how else would you get constructive criticism
>>
>>68885433
oh boi.

compression is best learned by trying it out on various sounds and just playing with it. combined with help from videos or tutorials, not one the other.

i like to think of a compressor as a funnel.
a conventional funnel takes takes a large amount of liquid and condenses it into a smaller stream. in case you (like many people) think "compressors make it phat and loudddd". that's you hearing the make up gain. a compressor simply decreases the amplitude based on a threshold you give along with attack and release. what it does in affect after make up gain is applied, makes loud sounds and quiet sounds closer together. using it in excess isn't recommended. learn how to mix with faders first. sorry if this was a shitty explanation, i can elaborate.

>>68885465
you can learn. stay here.

ok so i went ahead and did a graphic explanation of what i wanted to say in my paragraph.
>>
>>68885489
Thanks for the explanation. That makes sense.

I guess I was just wondering if I record, say, a vocal part and the singer gets too close to the mic for a few seconds and sounds louder than the rest of the vocal track, what would you do in that circumstance? I know I could do some volume automation to dip the volume down for a few seconds, but is this the preferred method?
>>
>>68885605
Thanks for this. That makes the point much clearer
>>
>>68885625
you can do whatever sounds or works best in the situation. I was going to mention automation but you already did. A compressor basically is automation in super simple terms. but yes, if there is a part of audio that is much too louder than the average volume, yeah i suppose so. if the audio is like hovering around at -5.0db most of the time and every now and then she its -2.0, set the threshold to just under -2.0 and use your ears for the rest. some people make the compressors obnoxiously obvious and it ruins the sound. subtle touches are best.

>>
>>68885661

>Not sure if it's done or not and still needs to be mixed

it's done when YOU think it's done. did you create both the piano melody and chords yourself? or are these all just loops? if you created most of it, then i give props. the pitch modulation on the sub bass is a bit too much, and the sub could be slightly quieter.

It sounds like something Justin Timberlake would sing to if you took the 808 away.

Not even hating. It's not a bad song, it just doesn't have a trap feel.
>>
>>68886853
It started as a shitty program for sequencing basic hip hop beats and therefore was used only by 15 year olds looking to 'get found' for making basic trap or dubstep

it's evolved a TON since then though and unfortunately a lot of guys choose to hate it based on what it was way back when even though it's an entirely different program now
>>
>>68886853
IMO FL didn't get the name because kids were searching how to be avicii, martin garrix, etc. It's because half of fl studio users are niggers obsessed with the "grind" of making shitty trap beats that no one will ever use/buy because they never bother to learn music theory.

also, FL is easier to pirate, and most people use windows, which I think ableton was once not on.

Made this today?
This is my first time ever really making what you could consider a beat (just using digital shit, mind you). I'm kinda happy with it even though I'm never really happy with what I end up with when I make music. I mean, before I uploaded this I was still thinking about what I could do to like, spice it up or just make it better.

Keep in mind that this was all done in the poorest of poor man's DAWs: Audacity.

I like it, but the piano sounds a little too stock sounding for my taste... I agree with >>68886685 in that it sounds like something Justin Timberlake would sing over (not really a bad thing though cause I actually really like Justin Timberlake). I think you can get more of that trap flavor with more glitchy hihats and something a little darker with the melody.

>There is no circlejerk, Ableton is still the most popular DAW

simple wrong. it's popular as fuck, i use it and love it. but FL is so much more popular, or at least it does have the vocal majority. and it's not "ableton is better xddd". i'm complaining that its a single minded circlejerk. i don't want everyone to switch to ableton, i wan't them to try out various daws and pick the ones they like. FL can be one of them, but I wouldn't mind seeing more Reaper, cubase, reason, etc. just less of the fucking same generic choice.

Can't say I'm a fan of the vocals to be honest (but as you said, they aren't done). But it sounds pretty neat. Your drums aren't that bad either. It's a pretty fun tune.

I like the riff. It would sound good with some drums behind it. But instead of trying to attack my ears, use a gnarly sounding fuzz and then make sure you're not blowing your interface's ass out. It'll sound just as good, but without the coinciding ear rape.
>>
>>68885666
>>68885666
The vocals sound odd on the first one? Like, there should've been something done to them. I also suppose you don't really sound like you were putting your all into the takes. Belt that shit. And the stuff done to the vocals at the end were kinda weird too. The instrumental as a whole was pretty good though.

I'm listening to the second one right now, and it seems like the same stuff could be said about it. The instrumental is really good. But your vocals just need some work. Lyrically, both songs are pretty good as well.
>>
>>68887609
What do you suggest I do, mixing wise?
I honestly can't really think of much. Although I get where you're coming from when you say it sounds messy. I was SORT of going for that. But not too much.

I need /prod/ to tell me the truth. I'm poor as fuck. I may improve financially in the following months, but I'm still poor and depressed as fuck. I recently had to bust my ass just to get a cheap used casio ctk keyboard, and last year I bought a keyboard synth on eBay that turned out to be all fucked up, drum buttons are broken and some keys have to be pressed very hard in order to work. Also have a used small 25 keys MIDI keyboard that works fine, but I've never really used it. I have pirated ableton, FL Studio and have Reaper, I haven't really done anything.

My plans are:
learning basic piano
learning some music theory
learning some synthesis (I recently pirated Syntorial too)
buying a Blue Snowball Microphone, a midi cable, xlr cable, and recording, mixing, everything on one of my pirated DAWs.

Can I do this without any audio interface, no really good headphones and none of that expensive gear? Assuming I have the creativity, Can I make GOOD music while being poor? Please I want the truth, I need the truth, no memes
>>
Ableton is, if learned to it's full extent, a more powerful DAW than FL.

However no one in these threads is going to learn either DAW to anywhere near their full extents so just use whatever the fuck you want like who cares, if your WIPs sounds good that's the only thing that matters

It's like the end of catcher in the Rye.

The girl, she keeps on gripping for the item. And the protagonist, he says, he doesn't tell her to stop, or to reach harder. He lets her reach. All well knowing she could fall and hurt her self. But that's what life is, that grasp, that reach. There's no telling where it will go.

What I said earlier is true.

Happy to help :) as someone who's doing the book one thing he left out is that in order to read the notes it's useful to know mnemonics in order to read the notes. Like, EGBDF or EVERY GOOD BOY DOES FINE for lines on trebble clef, FACE for spaces on treble clef.

Also Great Britain Doesn't Fight America on bass clef lines and All Cows Eat Grass on bass clef spaces. This way one would be able to have more reference points for the lines. Also, this would make one able to count by twos instead of one when looking at a staff.

There might be other stuff that's missing. I haven't read the book in honesty I just do the worksheets and ask for help personally. But there's so many people that can answer questions. However, sometimes the questions not asked can hurt. But, uhh Trebble clef is actually a very fancy G if you look at it long enough, and it wraps around the G note, and Bass clef's two dots are around F. That's enough to get started. There's another book for stuff to play but it's not public access. Any book works fine though. Really what playing piano does is gives a visual context to the notes on the page. Just playing the stuff that you're reading if you whoever you are is reading this. Then it'd do you just fine to learn to play the scales and attempt to memorize them, attempt to memorize note placement, attempt to memorize inversions, attempt to memorize the circle of fifths and understand it's functions etc. With this understand you'll be more adept at playing pieces. From there on out you can play pretty much anything of a certain skill level, so to speak.
>>
>>68888849
I'll see if another book will be out soon if I don't forget, it just might be so.
>>
>>68888984
And be able to include these techniques in your music.
>>
I can obtain copies of the worksheets correct awnsers and distribute them as needed lol. just gotta let me know, I'm Deko<3 if you haven't figured that out. I'm sure someone might be able to find me. I'm not raelly that good at this though so please bare with me.

>>68888984
Thanks! I had already learned the very basic stuff but I needed to refresh because I haven't read anything about it since last year. Do you think it's best to completely focus on theory first until I get to understand de circle of fifths or should I study theory as I study synthesis, production, mixing etc at the same time?
>>
>>68889089
I'm spooky hehehe

Goodnight
>>
>>68889093
I mean honestly I'm no expert but if you want to learn how to play an instrument and learn old-school composition techniques then theory would probably be for you. If you want to make a clean recording then you might rather study mixing etc I'm not sure, so on and so forth. Having the freedom to do what you want is nice, I have to do theory to just keep up with school. It's hard for me and it moves fast. I hope eventually I can feel less constrained.

Yeah.

Make the best of what you have available and learn all of your gear inside and out.

You don't want to go out and buy a shit ton of studio gear to "buy" your sound when you won't know what you're doing in the first place.

You might need an audio interface, but those can be had for cheap. If not you can look into cassette or digital multitrackers which are harder to use/less fluid than PC but you can do a lot with them.

I know tame impala gets a lot of shit here, but one of their albums was recorded on a boss 16 track and not in some fancy studio.

/Ableton/ question here. How do I randomize the starting/ending point and the velocity of each midi note of a chord that I constructed using the "chord" device?

I.E: I press "C" on my midi controller and my chord device is set to +4 +7, so I'm actually playing a C major chord, but I'd like that the notes C-E-G have a different lenght/velocity in relation to eachother.

i dont think you can do that with the chord device

Anybody using Studio One 3 in here? How do you like it?

Can someone tell me how to get the wavy synth sound when it's weaving between the kicks?
I don't really plan on using it I just want to know how it's made.
>>
I need ukulele sounds. What's the best sample library available for this?
>>
>>68896969
Dunno if you are talking about the saw/square synth or the 303 saw synth I am using for bass, either way, use a gate or a sidechain.
>>
>>68895774
You're better off just making chords in your piano roll and then automating the velocity.

I use a list of chip vsts that could, with varying amounts of work do that:
ymVST
Famisynth
magical8bit

How do I get to the point where if I imagine a sound in my head I can create it

Is audacity all you need?
>>
>>68899968
get an actual daw and learn synthesis
>>
if dubs check my soundcloud
>>
>>68900075

I have shitwig and audacity

I feel like bitwig doesn't have a good synthesizer
>>
>>68900075
not that guy but are there any solid tutorials anyone can rec for this
i'd love to make the kind of complex dirty sounds from year zero by nin, but no idea where to start
>>
>>68899968
Audacity is just for recording. So, if you can make all the sounds outside of the computer, you'll be good to go
>>
>>68900125

you can generate many different tones and it has a ton of effects
>>
>>68900177
>tones
If you're making noise, then I guess it would work for that.
>>
>>68900177
I use audacity for things like normalizing the master track and converting the final wav file to mp3.
Audacity is a really great piece of freeware. But that's about all I use it for nowadays.
>>
Yo anyone Sony acid pro 7 here? Is there a way to reduce the clicking noise (lags) by setting a specific ratio of buffers or is it best if you just make both of those sliders to the right? I remember figuring out an optimal value but I restored it to factory settings by accident

I've got a project pending but there is some lagging noise during playing and rendering and I don't want to reduce the whole thing too much because it fucking hurts (not really but you know) and I have to wait at least one more month in order to buy a new cpu
>>
>>68900310
Exactly. Audacity is good for manipulating audio, but it isn't really useful for creating songs from scratch inside itself.
>>
>>68900326
Try lowering the sample rate?
>>
>>68900110
there are some nice freeware synths like uhe tyrell for va synth and dexed for fm synth

>>68900119
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=atvtBE6t48M this video series is good if you are new to synthesis
>>
>>68900341

but I don't see what it doesn't have compared to the synthesizer in bitwig, for example
>>
>>68900359

Isn't 44 khz too low? Doesn't it sound shitty? I don't remember anymore, the last time I've got 44 khz as sample rate I had a single core processor
>>
>>68900407
It doesn't sound that bad.
You probably just have too much stuff going on, too many effects, pc is starting to shit out.
>>
How do I make leads like this
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=tBkXIjMZo0w
without using? Detuning makes a change over time (because phasing, I guess) that I don't want.
>>
Anyone know what brand/model this keyboard is that is being played at 4:05?

>>
>>68900718
looks like an m-audio axiom. i have the 49 key version.
>>
>>68900541
>It doesn't sound that bad.

>that bad

:---DDD I think I'm going to check it on my... 10 bucks headphones! yesssss Fuck I actually noticed that monitor speakers (at least mine) aren't that good to detect quality in such fine nuances but I'll try it

Yes there is "too much going on" but you can kind of optimize it in the options of Sony acid Pro 7, like , adjusting the buffering and such

I see if those lagging noises FUCK I FORGOT THAT BEFORE I DELETED THE LAST TWO COMPONENTS I RESTARTED MY COMPUTER AND AFTER THAT I DIDN'T DEACTIVATE THE SPEEDSTEP-OPTION AND DIDN'T OVERCLOCK IT AS I DO USUALLY BEFORE CHECKING IF PLAYBACK WORKS FINE WITHOUT LAGGING!!! okay I'll look tomorrow

Ableton or FL Studio for making beats?

figure it out yourself. its not just ableton or fl studio, every daw has a free trial or demo. personal preference should dictate it.

I've heard that ableton is standard for producers but I create the quickest with mascons and really like the ease of it. Can I continue using maschine or do I absolutely have to switch to ableton?

you can play/arrange a synthesizer, you cant do either with a tone generator
