I made this thread because no one else would.

N-not like I wanted to or anything.

The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

~~Jangle Quickies™~~

Bukka White - The Complete Sessions 1930-1940
>Delta Blues
Good but just shy of great. Sounds very samey and struggles to make a definitive individual statement. His guitar work is good but doesn't strike that emotional chord as effectively as his contemporaries.
6.5 /10

Eugene Chadbourne - Vol 1: Solo Acoustic Guitar
>Free Improvisation
Crazy solo guitar improv. Fucky sounds that defy the instrument. Yes please.
7.5 /10

Quasi - American Gong
>Fag Indie
Gross, lol.
Abysmal lyrics, and reeeally trying to shoehorn that lo-fi noise aesthetic into shitty pop songs.
3.0 /10

The Blind Willie Johnson comp listen and review are long overdue

>Blind Willie Nelson - The Complete Blind Willie Nelson
The first few songs are a bit samey—blues with trailing, string-bent guitars and a gravely voice—but he soon breaks out into a surprisingly expressive and dynamic range of singing and playing. I can’t get enough of those moments when he switches from his hoarse almost-overtoned rasping to his beautiful, hearty singing voice. He can make the switch on a dime, and when it hits it’s so potent. He does it nearly every song it never gets old.

Both discs are amazing, but the first has a slight edge on the second. The second is noticeably softer and has a little more traditional pop appeal. It’s almost folky at times too. The whole shebang overstays its welcome a bit, but such is the nature of the complete artist discography compilation. There are amazing moments aplenty scattered pretty evenly throughout.

I went in with high expectations and they were met.

I just really couldn't get into this album. I liked some of the noisy parts and the part when it transitioned into an ambient track was pretty neat. Also the glitchy electronic manipulations made the guitar part a bit more interesting. While the vocal delivery had a unique sound to it, the album started to sound the same after just a few songs. I actually didn't realize it was in english until almost the end. yellow circle/10

So I finally gave this cocksucker a listen

>Bon Iver - 22, a Million
I went in with mixed expectations on this. On one hand, I really enjoyed the first two singles. On the other hand, everyone says this album blows. And I’m kind of inclined to agree with the latter.

It’s weird, usually pointless “folktronica” or art pop—pick your poison—that starts off promising, but never builds into or amounts to anything. A lot of the tracks are pleasant enough, so I guess they’re kind of ambient in that way (better listened to passively), but too often will the album pull you out of it to try and fail at something. Like the mostly solo vocal “8 (circle)” which might have been some kind of ballad. The clear, largely un-autotuned vocals were supposed to cut through the album and stand out I guess? Anyway, it sounds like fucking 2015 Coldplay.

I can actually admire Justin’s efforts to branch out from heartfelt indie folk rock, because I don’t think he’s feeling it, and it’s a played out genre anyway. But it’s a bit of being stuck between a rock and a hard place, because the mature “electronic” album (see: Kid A, Age of Adz, the list could go on…) is probably just as played out. And this album isn’t really doing the trend much service. While the soul influences smattered on the first song were promising, they rarely resurface. If he pursued that, I might’ve been a bit more interested.

Also the pseudo-cryptic bullshit marketing for the album pissed me off. Like, don’t focus on the lyrics, Justin. The lyrics are trash. Just don’t even.

At only 34 minutes, it shouldn’t be difficult to avoid boring the listener, and yet…

Dispepsi is probably the best pop album about soda ever.

Could probably write about "what's their message? Do they not like advertizing? Capitalism? What's their endgame?" but no one wants to hear that.

Unironically liked a lot of the pop tunes on here, but the addition of the spoken word about Pepsi doesn't really mesh well, and certainly doesn't have the same impact as "escape from noise."

Not underrated, but definitely unchecked. Would rec to anyone who doesn't think telling the same joke for an entire album gets old fast, or anyone that enjoyed Escape From Noise in any capacity.

should add I really dug a lot of the Pepsi-related humor here, I just thought it got old fast. "Would've been better as an EP" is a fucking stupid-ass non-review I've seen a million times but I honestly think there was really no way to make this concept not tired almost immediately. I say something dumb like "hurr good concept but the execution was bad hurhur" but I'm only sort of a hack. The concept was hecked from the beginning.

Really craving a nice, crisp, refreshing taste of a Pepsi(TM) for some reason...

What a disappointment. I expected a decent Spacemen 3 rip off but what I got was boring Verve impression (and Verve are a bit shit anyway) with a bit of Slowdive (another band I'm not a huge fan of) thrown in. I got a bit excited when I saw Nat say the tracks drone on and on a while back because like I said it put images of Spacemen 3 in my head. But sadly the reason these tracks drone isn't through any minimalist hammering of the same chords, sustained noise or anything that makes droney shoegaze good, it's just through putting some effects on shit songwriting and dragging it out for 7 minutes. There's the odd good moment but it's all so fucking boring. 2/5

according to AMG it would and AMG is always right. anon >>68857160 claims staying power as his most important value but everything's transient, and you'd have to consider every last listen or estimate a mean or something. "what were the single most impactful listenings of your life" as a question isn't less valid. the results would prolly be the same half the time anyways, because you're gonna seek that reward again

Reviving this, though may not update each individual scores because I'm gonna be busy for the next couple months or so. I'll hit /daily/ up with a review of whatever's interesting.

"Bach's Fugs" is much more interesting on my first relisten, as I feel like having basic background knowledge in fugues is pretty important to getting anything out of this.
8

The Mind Game OST was fucking weird and unapologetically all over the place. Just like the movie. A mix of pop rock, onkyo, progressive electronic, tribal ambient, etc. Very enjoyable and diverse, though not always spot-on, but watch the movie first.
7

Dweezil's album was shit and I don't care for bong-beats.

Vagrant Story OST and probably SotC OST + others next probably. Glad to be back into this. Terminus drone never probably but wouldn't it be funny if I accidentally did it some day? lmao.

Eugene Chadbourne - Vol. 2: Solo Acoustic Guitar
>Free Improvisation
A lot more sparse and freaky than vol 1, each piece seems to have it's own specific direction that unfortunately loses it's novelty quickly. The loud breathing, humming and scratching are great for developing atmosphere and are used effectively. Occasionally the pieces drag, and sometimes they're over without warning; you're never quite sure where you are in a song.
A little more substance in terms of planning and technical prowess, but at the expense of listenability.
Recommended for people that self-identify as 'creeps'.

is there any shoegaze that doesn't have god awful vocals? i listened to the MBV album "loveless" i believe it's called, but i could not get past how incomprehensible the vocals are.. is that a staple in shoegaze? i didn't mind the music in general it was just the vocals that put me off the whole album.

This whole thing is so comfy. The simple acoustic guitar melodies are so soothing and the occasional embellishment from other instruments helps to keep it interesting. I loved the soft vocal delivery that had a hint of melancholy buried in everything that was being sung. A perfect album to just stare outside the window not really thinking about anything. green diamond/10

Fucking finally finished

Keiji Haino - Soul’s True Love

Disc 1 - Lost Aaraaff - Concert from the Genyasai Festival

An absolutely insane free jazz performance with an impossible wide set of musical ideas. In the first 2-3 minutes of the aptly named Hell of Screams the listener is exposed to screaming, insane drum work, and fucking firecrackers. I wish we had a visual representation of this performance, as the energy surging from this performance is incredible. There are points where Keiji is just screaming his lungs out over instruments I can’t even try to identify. Of those that I can recognize, I hear organ, saxophone, some type of reeds, and harmonica. I’m still not 100% sure that I am correct in these. All I know is it’s some of the best batshit crazy high energy free jazz I’ve ever heard. The fact that Keiji was allegedly only 19 when this was recorded is crazy as well. This is an incredible start to this anthology for sure.

Disc 2 - Suite Reverberation: The Third Heart

A bizarre set of improvised musical performance in a wide array of acoustic instruments. The instruments on here include mandolin, guitar, saxophone, violin, flute, hurdy-gurdy, and Keiji’s terrifying vocal straining on track 4. I don’t really know how Keiji manages to get the insane sounds he does out these instruments, but he does, and it’s very captivating as a result. I actually often forgot that I was listening to largely acoustic instrumentation due to the insane stuff Keiji does with these musical items. He makes a violin sound like an industrial press, and a hurdy-gurdy sound like glitched out synths. It’s wroth mentioning that I’m still not sure that I’m correct about these instruments, they’re just my best guess. I will say that this album does get boring at a few points, and the interest in Keiji’s fuckery wanes in the longer cuts. Still a definitely impressive set of performances. Good stuff.

continued in next post
>>
>>68865316
Disc 3 - Suite Reverberation: The Forest of Spirits

An absolutely chilling combination of sounds that I have given up on identifying. Keiji has created a soundscape that comes off as a field recording of actual ghosts in the middle of a frozen forest. The first track on this disc is an incredibly captivating set of sounds that weave in and out of intensity, building an atmosphere that ranges from soothing to near terrifying. The next two tracks come as transitional, but maintain the tone of the first track. These cuts call back to the work done on Disc 2, being composed mostly of instruments that sound largely acoustic. I think I heard horns? An organ? The last track is the harshest on this entire collection, being composed entirely of a HEAVY wall of noise. This was recorded years before Merzbow, really compelling. And as always, I don’t know what was used to make this noise. Probably processed guitar? Incredible. For sure, the best disc.

Disc 4 - Untitled (Fushitsusha)

The final disc is a bit of refresher, sounding unmistakably like Fushitsusha’s live presence. However, there is a distinct focus on the violence that Fushitsusha could imbue into their sound. The first track is mostly abrasive guitar drone overlaid with plucks in very high registers. Very cool sounds. Next track starts with improvised percussion jingling until Keiji seems to imitate and monkey and screech for a bit. The rest of the song more agonized screaming before the percussion subsides and the song devolves into just screaming and chanting over the occasional tamborine shake. Keiji is just letting out pure energy. The third track is something I can’t really explain, other than it’s a creepy, violent, mind numbing set of improv performances. Craziest track of this disc by far, really gets under your skin. The final track, a bluesy ballad with LRD vibes, is the most melodic of the entire anthology, and definitely refreshing after the chaos of track 3.
>>
>>68865372
Overall, this anthology really is a marvel. It ranges from quietly captivating improv to ear searing chaos seamlessly over it’s massive four hour length, and is truly a testament to the musical power Keiji can muster up. At some points, it’s easily one of the most baffling pieces of music I’ve ever heard, and at others, I’m just having a great time. I definitely see myself visiting this in the future. Absolutely essential avant-garde, truly remarkable.

INCREDIBLE.

>>68865316
Damn that sounds awesome. Definitely gonna add this to my list after reading this review. 4 hours is a hefty listen though, even spread out

Probably a dumb question but you ever heard Orient by Don Cherry? I'd highly recommended it if you haven't. Seems like it isn't quite as wild as the Haino record but there's a lot of similar ideas on it. First album I thought of while reading your review

I'm thinking of older artists like:

Grateful Dead's more jazzy/experimental stuff
Hendrix's more jazzy/experimental stuff
King Crimson
Yes
Mahavishnu orchestra

"i think it's called a 'roach' because of him. that's a marijuana reference" - my dad 2016

Clifford Brown and Max Roach - Clifford Brown and Max Roach (1954)
>hard bop

Exactly what I expected, and I'm pleased with that. It's damn fine hard bop, nothing more, nothing less. Doesn't do anything to astound compositionally or sonically, especially when compared to Roach's later works, but the pieces are nicely tuneful and the performances are pitch-perfect and energetic as hell. Brown has a wonderful, heavy tone on his trumpet, and Roach's drumming is characteristically intense. These characteristics elevate the music beyond simply being "nice". Maybe not into "great" territory, but it's a very, /very/ solid jazz album

3.0+

Set Fire to Flames - Sings Reign Rebuilder (2001)
>post-rock

This album is kind of like if you took a GY!BE album and took out all the cathartic releases and left only the build-ups and the spoken word/chamber music interludes. Basically, it's musical blue-balls. Very pretty and atmopsheric blue-balls, but there's obviously something missing from this album, and it's mostly the fact that most tracks peter out before they have a chance to become truly great. It's still in the same vein as the more atmospheric Godspeed and Silver Mt. Zion tracks, so samples are implemented well and it uses field recordings in a lovely, innovative manner, but everything seems so inconsequntial, there's no payoff to anything, it's just a collection of haphazardly put together sounds. It's done well for what it is, but it's a bit of an overlong tease. That being said, it's got one of my favorite album covers, so that's a plus.

2.5+

Danny L Harle - Broken Flowers (2015)
>bubblegum bass

The most infuriating thing about bubblegum bass for me is that so many producers who fully embrace the genre's aesthetic are honestly very good producers. This guy is no exception, he has a very thick, full sound; he implements samples well; and he's very obviously got a perfect grasp on the sugary sweet aesthetic of bubblegum bass. So why does Harle, along with so many other producers, restrict himself to making music as infuriatingly fucking vapid as this? This isn't even that bad from a songwriting standpoint, the title track has a wonderful melody and an infectious beat, but it gets repeated /over/ and /over/ until it loses all impact and just becomes flat-out irritating and unenjoyable. The remaining three tracks suffer from this exact same issue, choruses and phrases are repeated until your brain turns into absolute mush, with very few shifts in sound present to keep the songs fresh and enjoyable. There are some good ideas here, and the production is admittedly nice, but it's a 14-minute long EP that feels too long, which says pretty much all I want to say about this.

Definitely not quite on the level of Satori from these Sabbath-likes, but still damn enjoyable. If you're the type who gets near-instant enjoyment from the proto-metal heavy psych rock, you should probably hear this shit as soon as you can. Try Satori first though, because this one is sort of underwhelming.

Eugene Chadbourne - Vol 3: Guitar Trios

My favourite of the series, and the one with the widest dynamic range. The other musicians compliment Chadbourne well, and the atmosphere is unique, enjoyable and exciting throughout (especially the final 22min piece).
A lot less jarring and chaotic than the first two volumes, but the added musicians gives it a much fuller and more immersive sound. The horns and sirens are used tastefully in combination with duelling electric guitars for a very unique soundscape.
The tracks vary widely within it's constraints, but still form a cohesive album.
If you're looking for some tasteful free improv, check this out.

Half-Handed Cloud- HALOS AND LASSOS

This was the first album I investigated after hearing about Half-Handed Cloud from something related to Even Oxen. Soon I was much more intrigued by some of Mr. John Ringhofer's other works such as "Cut Me Down and Count My Rings" or "Flying Scroll Flight Control," but now I've come back to this one.

I have a bias towards this band, as I do towards any modern music that is simultaneously Christian and listenable. Not only that, but Ringhofer clearly shares my fetish for the timbres of esoteric instruments and bases most of these songs around a warm electronic hum called the Omnichord. Not only THAT, but unlike so much indie pop music, he seems to have a preference for not singing the same pitch twice in a row, resulting in the type of busy melodies that Kevin Barnes is equally fond of.

Comparing Half-Handed Cloud to bands such as of Montreal or Marshmallow Coast is easy to do. For sure, this is very similar to the more twee bands that the Elephant Six collective produced. But as someone who usually finds a little twee of this variety to be a soothing experience, I can tell you that this album often very much annoyed me.

The reason for this is the lyricism, and it is probably mainly a personal reason. The first song is a good example of this. "Garden was your dwelling place but now you have been banned, doo doo doo-doo-doo doo-doo, a-doo, a-doo, a-doo-doo-doo!" smiles Ringhofer cheerfully as chipper sing-song xylophones dance around a peppy drum machine beat. There is something irritating here about setting the Biblical account of the Fall of Man to such a jubilant background....

Before we go any further, I should clarify that I was raised in a Christian household and still consider myself a religious person; I even experienced a vision when I was five years old. Nowadays, I have my troubles with faith in God, which is not so bad because I also have trouble with faith in just about everything. Even as a child, the idea that most people suffer eternally after death is something that bothers me in a way that not much else does, and I still start to feel very strange and sick when other Christians in my life say (not very Biblical) things such as that it's not so bad that people go to Hell because after all, it was their choice.

tl;dr these lyrics TRIGGER me, baby.

Well, not so much just the lyrics as the combination of dark theological topics with cheerful, upbeat tunes. Take this gem from the second song: "They <non-Christians> seem like they're doing fine, and I've worshiped all this time; have I followed you for nothing, Lord? Then You show me they walk on a ground that is slippery. In Your mind, they're a dream. When You wake, their life's theme will be ONLY A FANTASY."

Inherently disturbing in a way that is only enhanced by the la-de-da music and the la-de-da voice. (A voice that certainly gets on my nerves sometimes. It isn't twee in a vulnerable way like Andy Gonzalez, but twee in a "I will be happy no matter what" way.)

In fact, the entire second song deals with John feeling pissed off at unbelievers for seemingly being so much happier than him. ("They've no struggles, free from burdens...") And as I think back to the rest of this album, he seems much more sore about other human beings than about Satan or any demons. But I could be just assuming this, and maybe lyrics such as "the wicked open up their mouth...they love each harmful word" ARE about supernatural beings rather than atheists.

(2/3, I guess)

Alright, I've written far too long a review than I was originally going to. I've focused mostly on the negative aspects of this record, all while not discussing how pretty a song like "Tongues That Possess the Earth Instead" is despite its lyrics, or how "You've Been Faithful to Us Clouds" is perfect, undiluted pop in its purest form. Indeed, there is much to admire about Ringhofer's creativity, and it would even be incorrect to say that all of these lyrics are cloying.

In the end though, this music sometimes gets very much so under my skin, and not in a good way. And those wandering melodies, for all their uniqueness, generally never do quite reach the resonance of something as simple as Will Toledo droning "You should've seen my cursive back then..."

I'm curious as to what /daily/ thinks of this band, as it is a very obscure one but might be known around here since you all are allegedly into Even Oxen's music and I know he is a fan.

or not but i just thought it's interesting in that it kind of spells out the appeal of the song, about pent up emotions which come out in the lyrics to a track so generically upbeat it expresses fake happiness perfectly. or, Fall Out Boy have that one line "the best of us can find happiness in misery"
most of the time stuff like this or The more upbeat Smiths tracks hit closer to my home than sad music that actually sounds sad so i'm not feeling you there but i can see what you mean i guess

Eichen, I'm really glad you started listening to Half Handed Cloud. Flying Scroll Flight Control is my absolute favorite album of his but Halos and Lasso are my second runner up for the reasons that you like it too (followed by Learning About Your Scale and As Stowaways)

I love HHC but i don't blame anyone for disliking the obvious cheerful tone John carries throughout his discography. It's not for everyone and even the lyrics are understandable for their zealous tone to be off-putting but to me it's all endearing. HHC is just an awesome artist to me and I think in the end I appreciate the arrangements enough to recommend it to anyone.

This has always happened here, because it happens everywhere. There is not a single place on earth where people don't "sync up". Are you just now noticing this? It has always happened in chart threads as well. If you want to try it for yourself lose your trip and post a topster with a specific obscure but unique (in cover art, genre, whatever) album. Watch it magically appear in everyone else's charts for the next few days-weeks.

>>68883155

The funny thing is I would still give Halos and Lassos at least a B for being so inventive with its arrangements and its crazy melodic endeavors. Even the lyrics that I so bashed here are consistently clever. (For some reason I really like the line "I'm about to faint.") But yeah, I like Flying Scroll Flight Control better; his voice is subtly smoother, the lyrics mess with me less and the songs feel like they have a bit more emotional range, less giddy and more "at peace" or something.

>>68882171

I was in a pretty damn weird mood when I wrote that review, so I think the music must've affected me in a way I wasn't expecting. But yeah, I enjoy an ironic Smiths song myself so maybe it's the religious subject matter that makes me so touchy about it.

[blog]it's my one year anniversary with my girlfriend!

if you're wondering how i've managed to maintain a relationship while listening to upwards of 1000 albums, I don't know either![/blog]

Richard Youngs - Sapphie (1998)
>singer/songwriter, contemporary folk

Delicate, minimalistic folk that works very well. The three tracks here are all upwards of nine minutes, and all stay true to the same aesthetic and sound, and they're all sad as absolute hell. It's a concept album about the death of Youngs' dog, and the themes of death, sadness, and loss are prevalent throughout. Youngs' voice, very uneven and shakey, fits the sadness and rawness of the music well, but is occassionally grating, especially when he hits high notes. It does also drag on a slight bit, but Youngs has an uncanny ability to make all three of these tracks deserve to be as long as they are, exposing more and more layers of reverbed guitar every minute, something that I can't say about other albums structured like this.

that sounds like a pretty nice family trip. but also cold. whereabouts in russia?

the plan is to get it out around may/early june next year. That is if the label is still interested in putting it out after listening to the recordings.
But yeah it's gonna be fun, we have like twice the time in the studio that we had last time. We plan on trying out different stuff with the arrangements, such as horns, piano, percussion and such.
