lol

I actually appreciate the effort, I can't be here all the time.

You missed a couple of things though:

The fact that a plucked strings momentum is limited by the loss of energy into the guitars body is directly related to the validity of the tonewood argument. A solid body on a guitar acts as an internal block, a denser body will reject more of the strings energy than a less dense body will. The idea that sustain has nothing to do with an electric guitars overall sound is wrong, sustain (or lack thereof) is a crucial element to an electric guitars overall sound.

Secondly the density of an electric guitars wooden neck will make a drastic difference in how well an electric guitar stays in tune. A denser, stiffer, more stable neck will result in a more stable tuning as you play, so the wood your neck is made of is also incredibly important when discussing the validity of tonewood.

>The strings vibrate over magnetic pole pieces, disrupting the magnetic field and generating an AC current in the coil around the poles. This is the signal which is amplified.

What his argument failed to address is the fact that tonewoods affect the way the strings behave over the polepieces and thus the resulting overall sound of the instrument even through an amp.

You were absolutely right though, it's physically impossible for the wood not to have some influence over the sound of a solid body electric guitar. How much influence is completely up for debate.

When you split the hair like this an absolutist can't legitimately argue against the irrefutable laws of physics, at that point you just let them shit all over themselves and roll their faces around in it until the asspain is unbearable and a tube of Preparation H® is required to stop the burning smell.

You did good though.

Hey if you have the following chord progression:
G | B | C | Cm
How would you solo over it?
It's the chords from Creep by Radiohead, not that it matters, I just found the progression interesting and tried to tinker over it.

My best try is to play E aeolian when G and C are up, C dorian when Cm is up, and I'm not sure about the B chord. Maybe G# aeolian?

Anyone with a better idea?

The Ibanez S's probably my favourite overall design
The body is thin and makes the guitar really light, the neck is slim and flat, which fits perfectly for me, and a lot of their models have middle single coils, which I really like.

Epiphone Les Paul custom, about two years now. I've been playing for 9 years. I just got an Orange Tiny Terror.

I understand it might sound like a silly question. I see why people would want a new guitar, or want a new amp, or want a certain pedal. But what makes people think "I need new pickups?" rather than any of the other things?

I'm not saying I need new pickups. But maybe I do, and I would be none the wiser

Ibanez Prestige Super-Strats, generally. It's just the ultimate 21st century guitar- exceptionally crafted, with great hardware and the mistakes made in crafting are down to the 1/1000th of a millimeter instead of the hack-jobs that come out of most Fender and Gibson workshops these days.

That said, while I've played plenty of incredible Ibanez guitars and own one myself, my Gibson Les Paul was a very lucky purchase and is my personal favorite. The frets aren't made for freaks like Steve Vai with massive hand-spans, but they're not Telecaster small for little twink boys either. The Humbuckers and individual tone-knobs provide for excellent versatility and allow me to quickly switch out of rhythm, lead, and ambient punch. The neck greedily eats my finger oils and the body only weighs about 5-7 lbs, making it significantly lighter than most Les Pauls.

With that said, as much as I've always wanted a Les Paul since I was a little kid, the mythos of every Les Paul being a fantastic guitar came to a screeching halt when I could actually afford to start shopping around for one. I'd say at least 80% feel more lacquered and fake than a Squier Telecaster.
>>
>>68778658

What sort of pick ups are in the guitar now? If you've been playing for 9 years, you should have some sort of grip on how glassy the guitar is, how warm it is, and if the mid requires a natural boost or an artificial cap. If your neck pick up is too warm and you expect more treble, look for a high output pickup with a heavy treble rating. If you want a consistently low, warm, bass-heavy feel then maybe you need to search around for a pair of pickups that focus on that sort of tonality.

The only way to know what sort of pick ups you want is to research what's out there on pickup websites right now, search for what gear your preferred artists are using, buy them, wire them up, and see how it sounds. I ran through 2-3 different sets of pickups on my Telecaster, from DiMarzio's to active EMG's with a 9V battery (luckily my telecaster came with the body pre-cut for modification from passive to active) and i was very lucky to have the technician selling them to me give me a full refund if I did not like how they sounded after 72 hours. Eventually I just put the stock pickups back in because I realized they were perfect for the guitar, and what I needed was as change in amplifier.
>>
>>68778658
>But what makes people think "I need new pickups?"
When they're happy with their guitar as far as playability goes, and want to get a different/better sound
You may want to replace your pickups. Look at some pickup demos and find some you like

>>
>>68779104

Tiny Terror's are great. You'll enjoy it a lot. I've played for 12 years with never more than 20 watts for an amp, but I've mostly used an Orange Crush and just recently purchased a VOX VT20X. I find Alnico pickups to be low-volume and utterly glassy, by that I mean ugly on the treble with almost no bass. But it's different for everyone. If you want to play metal, look up Sey-Duncs, if you want versatility, DiMarzio's are pretty impressive. A Tonezone + PAF Pro combination is wickedly incredible both clean and with distortion, but I'm not sure they make those pickups anymore.

I have Gibson Zebra '58's in my Les Paul and I wouldn't trade them for anything in the world. If you can find them I'd give them a try.

Personally, I think my sound is mushier than it should be. It might just be because I've only been playing at amp at a very low volume (I'm in a dorm at the moment), but I'm considering the possibility that I need new pickups. I'd imagine that the stock pickups in my Epiphone Les Paul aren't that great

Also, I'm curious what sort of amp and guitar settings the player in this might have been using. Does anyone have any suggestions?

>>
>>68779157
Those scales don't fit the chords. G major is definitely the best fit over G and C, it anchors the progression as a G major vibe

G - G major
B - G major but with a D# instead (same notes as E harmonic minor)
C - G major
Cm - G major but with an Eb and F natural (same notes as C melodic minor)

So you basically just change a note here and there while thinking of it as still being in G
>>
>>68779283

Never purchased from that website in my life. Never ordered a single guitar part online. I worked in a store selling instruments for 3 years that was independently owned, and I've never purchased a product that I didn't try out myself and physically inspect before purchase.

If you don't want to buy large brand name products, by all means, custom-wind your own pick ups and keep hand-crafting your own guitars- there is nothing wrong with that.
>>
>>68778658
It happens when someone loves the feel, finish, dimensions, or just have a sentimental attachment to a guitar but want a different sound. For example, someone loves the feel and sustain of a Les Paul but want it hotter to push their amp harder or they want it to sound thinner like a Strat.
>>
>>68779559
I think C melodic minor fits over G and Cm chords and E harmonic minor fits over B and C chords.

But I see now, I like your choice, basically these are the note differences:
G major
G; A; B; C; D; E; F#;
E harmonic minor
G; A; B; C; D#; E; F#;
C melodic minor
G; A; B; C; D; Eb; F;

I'm curious as to what's the best approach to be able to deduct this as fast as possible? I mean, you saw my approach, it was terrible, and if I was to improvise on the spot, it wouldn't sound as good, but I liked your style.
How did you find those scales that fast?
>>
>>68777679
The song is essentially in G major and borrows chords from G major's relative and parallel minors. This is the simplest and most consonant scale approach I can think of:

G - G major (G Ionian)
B - E harmonic minor (B Phrygian Dominant)
C - G major (C Lydian)
Cm - G minor (C Dorian)
>>
>>68780103
>How did you find those scales that fast?
I improvised making note changes by ear and found the scales I was playing afterwards. After playing for a decade, you can just kind of tell what sounds right
>>
>>68780114
>>68780103
see, how would you decide on the last scale?
I first thought of C dorian (because it sounded good to me), but as the previous guy mentioned, C melodic minor might be better. If you write it down:

G major
G; A; B; C; D; E; F#;
And C dorian and C melodic minor are:
G; A; B; C; D; Eb; F;
G; A; Bb; C; D; Eb; F;

So you can see that C dorian differs by 3 notes from G major and C melodic minor differs by 2 notes.

I wish I could deduce this things faster to see what fits best, but as
>>68780209
said, I guess I just need time/experience

Personal preference towards C Dorian mostly. They're both correct, I just think the Eb sounds better in most cases. Arguing for simplicity is a good point while you're learning, but eventually it's not really an issue and it all comes down to preference.

And also, I would argue that if someone were to play the progression with extensions, they'd be much more likely to play Cm7 instead of Cm(maj7), and that also makes a good case for Dorian instead of Melodic.

I play my LP through an acoustic guitar amp these days because I like the clean tones I get out of it. Anyway, I've been having a problem with mine where if I pick the strings hard enough there will be a buzzing sound coming out of the speaker. It can be fixed by turning the volume pot down on the guitar but I don't want to dampen my tone by doing that. Should I put a new celestion speaker in the amp or is it an impedance problem caused by high output from the guitar?

Novice player here and I'm looking for some insight, I don't have much experience playing instruments at age 22,

just previously a little bit of keyboard in the same method as my guitar, but my investment in music has always

been very passionate and diverse. I've begun self teaching/learning starting a few months ago but my adhd was

inhibiting me from keeping up consistently and I would usually just not play for days and weeks with an occasional

binge of playing. Basically personality quirks incline me to learn how to play in an unconventional way like playing

almost entirely improvisation, I know no chords, and I haven't tried learning any songs. I've looked at a few tabs but

skipping others. I think I may have some sort of natural proficiency in music theory or a really good ear for hearing

what sounds *good*.

I would like some opinions advice and criticisms if warranted on stuff i'm experiencing so far in my unconventional

process and hopefully advice for what direction I should take. I wrote out context ony process but I would have had

to make multiple long split posts so i'm posting all the context here http://pastebin.com/kA3aDebh

no tl;dr because i don't feel input will be accurate without context (and there's still much more context I could add

but I ain't out to write a novel)very appreciative for anything yall got to say if u do manage to read it all because it's

Pickups arent some kind of magic. Theyre like tires on a car, each one will have something its best suited for, there will be many similar ones, there will cheap varieties that will do the bare minimum, but in the end theyll all get you to where you need to be.

If you really want to get into the differences of each pickup on the market you gotta learn about their construction and how they work, doesnt hurt to know anyways even if youre not looking to buy right now.

Ill give you a basic run through.
Do you want new pickups?

Why? Are you unhappy with your sound? Is there too much buzz and noise?

Are you using shitty gear? Can you verify that other guitars dont have the same problems as yours? Are you looking to pull more mid range or gain out of an amp that just cant pull it off? Are you sure that one of your pedals isnt destroying your tone? Good pick ups sound good, but they cant make a shitty amp less shitty.

What are you looking for? Noise reduction? Hotter output for more distortion? More or less of a certain frequency range? Active pickups?

Are you just doing it to do it? A lot of people run stock pickups, theyre not something that you have to change out.

Do research. Listen to examples of pickups. 4 brands to look at; seymour duncan, dimarzio, bareknuckle, lane
Write down the ones you like. Compare them, down to what theyre made out of. You might find out you like them with Alnico 5s in them, so look for other pickups that have that same magnet.

Pickups can only help make a good sound better, they cant make a bad sound good.

Sweet. Will look more into these tomorrow.
>>
I've seen these videos but it doesn't match up with my own experiences. My dad has been building electrics for about 30 years and so we've had a lot of guitars around the house in different configurations. Here's what I've found:

Fingerboard constitutes maybe 15-20% of total sound in electrics. Maple is a brighter higher freq sound. rosewood is warmer middier sound. Ebony is more balanced and kind of in the middle. As far as rosewood family goes, brazilian is very balanced, east indian has a slightly higher high freq content and cocobolo a higher mid and low content. brazilian for a fingerboard isn't worth it in my opinion cost to benefit wise. East indian is probably the best cost to benefit if you go that way. I prefer ebony because I find it neutral.

bodies: 50-60% of sound. only have experience with mahogany and maple. mostly the overall mass plays the biggest role in the tone. Mahogany being less dense than maple tends to be muddier and dirtier in sound. maple is so dense it makes a heavy guitar and it has a very clear sound to it. Mixing it like in a les paul tends to make a very balanced guitar. I guess more mass means it vibrates less and produces less feedback. If you want a really clear sound go with dense wood and large body but be prepared for a heavy guitar. For the opposite, small body (or take off more wood in certain areas like a carved top for instance) and less dense wood.

neck. low % of sound. I'd generally recommend a maple neck over mahogany but if it has a good truss rod it shouldn't matter much. make sure it is quarter sawn wood because it will have more strength. This means the growth rings are running straight up from the back of the neck up to the fingerboard. Mahogany is also softer than maple and you see more mahogany headstocks that get damaged.

african mahogany is pretty similar overall to honduras mahogany but is a lot softer, dents easier and that's something to consider.

Hey bro I'm assuming you are talking about the solo at the end? In I didn't use any specific Japanese scale. I only used the Aeolian mode. In fact here's the notation for the solo. The alto guitar plays D Aeolian even though the key is in a minor because it's tuned a perfect fifth higher. The original song is mostly in Aeolian too I think..

Yes this is part of the reason i decided to switch to bass full-time. Finding ANY bassist is hard enough, a competent one is in very high demand. Looking for people to play with is always a million guitarists, couple drummers, no bassists (maybe a couple guitarists who can manage it in a pinch).

Things are so much easier when your instrument of choice is in demand. Not only is it easy tp find others to jam with, you can even be picky about which group you want to join.
>>
Can bass be played in classical guitar position? Or does the longer neck make it unviable?
And I know I look like a pretentious faggot but it's the only position I'm comfortable playing in.

>>
>>68794221
Optimally, you would want different string gauges and need to work on the setup and intonation to work with that tuning. It's just too big of a range for things to play/intonate consistently across tunings.

You can get away with doing it all on one guitar with the same strings and have it be good enough. It just won't be "ideal." I would probably use a set of 11s since you're tuning down so much.
>>
>>68796717
>Buy an SD-1 as a palette for learning how to circuit bend and shit.
I'd rather try that on a pedal I don't use, like my EHX micro metal muff (or maybe not, I can feedback like a motherfucker with that and I like it), or on a delay.
>>
>>68796763
In a perfect world I would have a guitar set up for each tuning I play in but that's not realistic for either my wallet and live performance.
I'm really just wondering if there is a trick to get it good enough and well rounded to play all those tunings.
My biggest problem is tuning to C, the intonation goes all over the place and especially when I use a capo.
Do you think if I set it up to somewhere in open D that would be low enough to help with C's intonation? I'm really just trying to cut down time on tuning.
>>
>>68796863
Setting up in the middle is the best you will be able to do, theoretically.
>>
>>68796863
add one more string
>>
>>68796863
I see your logic, but I'm not really sure it would work in practice. I think you'd just end up with a slightly less out of tune C tuning and a slightly less in tune standard tuning (and open D being fine). Personally I'd want my "home" tuning to be as in tune and playable as possible, and I don't think what you're suggesting would do that.

But maybe try it out and see what happens. If it works, it works.
>>
>>68796863
>>68797021
This shit's so fucking stupid. Put your guitar in one tuning and learn where the notes are. Problem solved.
>>
>>68796863
There's no compromise really, your intonation will always be slightly off outside of the tuning its set in. There are tricks you could, you could probably use a spider capo for some open tunings, you could use something like the pitchfork or whammy to subsitute down tuning. My pitch fork can drop me a minor third, so it sounds like im playing in C# standard instead of Standard, it can also do a perfect 4th but i never messed around with that, whih would take you down to C standard. Or you can tube to C standard and capo the 4th fret when you want to play standard.

Of course, none of those will sound or feel as natural as a different guitar for each tuning, but intonation is your big concern these are the compromises that will work best.

Volume pedal
Ehx Soul preacher
Big Muff pi w/tone wicker
Blackstar ht dual(clean and dirty boost for leads)
Dod stereo chorus
Dod envelope filter
Dod stereo phaser
Rocktron tremolo
Ehx pitch fork
Boss dd6
1 spot pro powering it all

Its just a working board right now, for when i gig. I was never really a pedal guy but more and more times im needing something live and i cant just get by with 3 pedals in a backpack anymore.

Supercollider 71 to replace the muff
Mxr236 to replace the stereo chorus
Either a keeley neutrion or dod filter "reissue" to replace the old dod. Or a super fatman if i can find one.
The dd6 is fine but i want to find something that's easier to work live.
Going to build the musicpcb tap tempo trem eventually.
I eventually want to add a couple noisemakers too, and an expression pedal for the pitchfork so i can let my inner 15 year old out even more.

....i actually really like the dod phaser though, but it is kind of buzzy.

Alternate tunings are for players who don't know where the notes are on the fretboard. Period.

The only real reason anyone would ever need one would be to break out of the box of muscle memory because you can't actually find or play the notes you imagine in your mind. It's a way for you to create "new" note combinations with the same shapes you've dedicated to muscle memory, nothing more. You're not actually leaning anything "new", you're stuck in a rut where you don't feel creative and alternate tunings are the crutch you've defaulted to instead of actually learning the note layout on your fretboard.

Okay, listen to a band like TTNG and tell me that you can play that in standard tuning. Another example, for solo arrangements you might want to play a section with just natural harmonics, sure I can play those same harmonics by figuring out where it would be in standard and making the natural harmonic but by tuning I can make it easier on myself and hold the bass note. There's a tears for fear arrangement for everybody wants to rule the world that does this.
Just because I play in alt tunings doesn't mean I only play in that too, I play in standard just as much.
>>

Here, let me help you guys out. Here's a list of the notes:
>C, D, E, F, G, A, B
Of course there are the sharps and flats too:
>C#/Db, D#/Eb, F#/Gb, G#/Ab, A#/Bb
So let me ask the question one more time:
>where on the fretboard within a four fret stretch is any note missing?

Now answer it. Which one of these notes is missing?

Wasn't even me, I wasn't lying like you are. I would love for some proof that you're a professor at Berklee and also would love to watch the video you aren't in.

You never answered what the difference between alt tuning and tuning down was. You still can't tell me what
>where on the fretboard within a four fret stretch is any note missing?
Has anything to do with playing open chords.
Yes, you dumb fucking asshole, you can play every note but that doesn't mean shit when you're not playing Mary had a little lamb or three blind mice.
Now that I admitted that you were right, let's see this fake video of you.

It's hilarious you can't bring yourself to answer my question honestly. I even listed the notes for you. Sad.
