What does this dumb weak-voiced shoegaze nigger know about goth anyway?
His main claim to fame is writing a song about getting a blowjob from Spiderman, he has no authority in this matter.

I actually used to listen to these guys in middleschool, back when I used to find new music on youtube
>>
>>68359848

I saw the vocalist from Cinema Strange live as solo act on a small theatre in my city, the crowd was about 50 people, all old goths.
The guy made us all stand up from our seats and go to the theatre's bathroom because of "appropriate acoustic" and sang a song there while crouching over the lavatory. It was very surreal and memorable.

I wish I could see the band live though. I love their sound.

I think he did play some Deadfly Ensemble songs, but no, it was just him as solo. This was back in 2009.

It wasn't really like a concert, it was more like a cabaret-style show, with many of his songs sang a capella or just with his guitar.

Can I talk about Swans in here, based on what they used to be and not what they are now?

I saw them live last night and whilst I'm glad I did I can't help but think the new stuff doesn't translate to live at all.

30 minute songs were just awkward as hell, especially with a sub-par sound system. I love Swans and wouldn't ever see them play their new stuff again. It's far too personal for 1000 people live

>>68366890

>>
>>68365490
I have a personal calendar.
Spring: Post-Punk, Neo-Psychedelia, Cold Wave, 80s pop, and electronic.
Summer: Traditional Industrial, Electro-Industrial, Harsh Noise, Country, Rockabilly, Rock n' Roll (actual rock n' roll from the 50s, not what some glam rocker calls rock n' roll), Power Electronics, Neofolk, and some other more abstract or very simple shit.
Autumn: Gothic Rock, Deathrock, Gothabilly/Psychobilly, a little Dark Wave, No Wave, and sometimes Cold Wave.
Winter:Dark Wave, Ethereal Wave, once again Cold Wave, New Order, Dark Ambient, Skinny Puppy, "Disintegration," And Also The Trees.

You're not goth unless it's your general state of being, summer does not change your dour mood.

>>68366690
Didn't see it, my
>>
>>68367085
You saying goths don't have freedom to be happy at anytime? Nigger, we like dark music and clothes, but that doesn't make us the kings and queens of sorrow who follow a doctrine to be sad strictly at certain times; so yeah, they do. I'll be honest though: I fucking hate winter. I'm very susceptible to cold and much prefer summer and fall over bite your ass cold.
>>
>>68367190
It's not about being happy or sad, it's about being aware that life is worthless and made of wasted time. Do with that what you will, to care about such things is rather pointless.
>>
>>68367139
What makes you say that? I just prefer certain sounds at certain temperatures and natural landscapes. IMO, old school Industrial fits in the searing heat of summer, while the gloom of acts like Xymox fit better when it's freezing and and white everywhere.

I recommend Sopor Aeternus: Les Fleurs du Mal, I wouldn't call it her best album, but it has a great production value, every song is great, with some outright classics like In Der Palästra and The Virgin Queen.

Only Hot Topic alumni christen themselves as "goth". Goth, as music and culture, has been dead for decades. It started strong, got weak kneed, and fizzled out before most of us were born.
Source: I'm a former goth.

>>68367277
It was also an easy source of nudes from troubled 20 something skanks. Feel kinda bad that I got some and flew off in hindsight, bit eh, i was a silly kid. A blow that bad could've made some of those girls off themselves, though.
Whether that's good or not is subjective, though. They were all Ronnie Radke freaks, but I got one into Swans.
Then one threatened to kill me because I didn't like djent. She was the only sorta nonmallgoth I saw there, and she was an orc. A literal orc. She had a basted kid with the singer from Veil of Maya. They really looked alike.

Just found a sickass post-punk / dub-ish noise rock album from the late 80s, World Domination Enterprises.

Sort of like a cross between Big Black and Public Image? Really nasty guitaring and chunky basslines but also extremely catchy in a fucked up sort of way. There is also a cover of "Funkytown" and an LL Cool J song, so yeah.

I don't understand people that say this. When music changes, it becomes something else entirely. The problem isn't the music, it's you. What you are saying is you want something else.

Go listen to something else.
>>
>>68377401
I don't understand how you don't get it. Nothing gets anywhere or lives on imitating the same old trick over and over and over again without variation. Everything either evolves, or vanishes. Playing a chorus'd guitar to a rudimentary throbbing bass while tribal percussion is playing and someone is singing in baritone because somebody did it back then will only kill off the movement, not save it.

>>
>>68377760
Then it's a different thing. What you want is something different.

Some people want to listen to this, and there always will be. It doesn't have to go anywhere.

I liked a certain type of music 10 years ago, I like that same type of music today, and I like new artists that make that same style of music. If it changed, it would be something else, that I won't listen to but others will.
>>
>>68378038
Look, I get you don't want the needle to move because you're afraid of change, but it's not just different. Evolution is the same thing but with new attributes. It's still the same DNA, it's still in the general group, but a new addition. Literature began as oral tradition, but now it's printed in books and online. You can't tell me because people aren't covered in organic matter talking in an extinct language that what we have isn't literature. By that logic, the first human ancestor is the only human and the proceeding beings have no relation. I don't want to listen to something different because what I'm asking for is an update of the same.
>>
>>68378113
>afraid of change
I like what I listen to, if an artist I liked made a change and made music that I didn't like, I'd stop listening to them and listen to what I do like.

>what I'm asking for is an update to the same
What does that even mean?

>>
>>68378208
What isn't there to get? I already explained it. Modern acts parrot and worship the bands of old instead of pushing it forward. Genres evolve. If they don't, they fade away. Hence progress and new direction.
>>
>>68378268
>Implying traditions can't still be included in the evolutionary process
>Implying mirroring my argument gives you a substantial point
>>
>>68378275
But that's bullshit.

All it takes for a genre to stay alive is a band that makes that style, and a base of people that like that style.

If it "evolves" then it's a different genre now, hence, go listen to something else, because you want something else.
>>
>>68378275
>Modern acts parrot and worship the bands of old instead of pushing it forward
Is that supposed to be bad?
>Genres evolve. If they don't, they fade away
I didn't know that, where did you learn this?
>Hence progress and new direction.
You're bringing up two very distinct things.

Earlier you said "the 80s thing is getting old" which is entirely your own opinion, which implies that you care about novelty more than about familiarity.

And now you're telling us that goth NEEDS to "evolve" otherwise it'd go away. Fine, but do we really need it to remain relevant?
Or is it just you wanting some novelty goth that doesn't sound like old goth?

What I'm saying is: progress isn't an absolute imperative, and neither is the survival of the goth scene at all costs.

I understood the grammatical context you were using the word conservative in.

It has nothing to do with the age, familiarity, or tradition. It's about style.

It's music. When a genre changes, it becomes a new genre. What you want isn't Goth, it's something else. There's nothing wrong with that.

Where do you get the idea that the old sound even had an evolutionary path?

Goth stuff in general is obsessed with the past and half of what's discussed in /dark/ is trying its hardest to sound old (like, reminiscent of the 1920s, XIXth century and middle ages), the only consistent evolutionary path I can see for the classic goth sound is to revert to pre-goth music styles.

Alright, maybe I am being vague. We all know how Goth came from Post-Punk with Joy Division, The Cure, Siouxsie and The Banshees and so on. Then more towards the mid-80s it got more clearly defined and added upon with installments like SOM, Fields of The Nephilim and some sub-genres likeDeathrock, Dark Wave, and Ethereal Wave popped up. Then in the 90s people starting mixing styles and everything fragmented from just goth and that clusterfuck carried over in the 00s. But then we got tired of all the edgelord posers and people who kept slapping shit together so we scrapped it in favor of recreating the original sound. Admittedly a very good undo switch, but what comes next? Are we always going to stay in this retro bubble and sorta die off, or will there be another part of goth that comes about? That's what I'm on about? What next? Is this reexploration going to hold us down? Why revel in the past now that we started over?
>>
>>68378773
>what comes next?
hopefully more of the same.

I think the problem is you understanding of the progression of goth. While other people made other music in the 90s, Goth rock was still being made. Posers and non-goth groups disappeared because that's simply their nature.

>what comes next?
Who knows. Sometimes there's only so much you can mix things up before its simply something else. Some genres won't branch out into something "new". The only outcome I see for what you're saying, are bands taking inspiration or borrowing aspects of Goth rock.

>sort of die off
>played out
Goth will not die until there are no Goth bands making music. Just because you haven't listened to anything relatively new, doesn't mean it's a dead genre.

You might just be a person that doesn't like to listen to the same thing all the time, but are fixated on Goth rock.
>>

>tfw you will never be as handsome as Karl McCoy

>>
>>68378923
A fair assessment, but I have listened to Drab Majesty, Soror Dolorosa, Qual, The Harrow, Lebanon Hanover, The KVB, and others, but while they sound good, they all sound like stuff I could pull out from my 80s collection and listen to instead. Where's the fun in that? I'm talking more about Goth Rock though because Dark Wave has more potential to keep evolving, while people still opt for the same exact things for the mysic hat started this shit to begin with.
>>
>>68378976
People opt for the same thing because that's what they like to listen to.

I think I and others were lead to believe you meant a shift in the genre because you used the words "progression" and "evolution" which while valid, also seem to imply a change to the genre itself. A better word would be off-shoot. Goth rock is an offshoot of postpunk, which is an offshoot of punk, and so on. I think this word works, because I feel you are looking for "what comes after" goth rock, not "I want goth to change". What offshoots from Goth? is the real question.

>>
>>68379150

>>
>>68379150

That would simply be an offshoot then. You can't change a genre so much without it become a new one, even if you can still "hear" the original genre.

You can hear the punk heritage in post-punk, and you can hear the post-punk heritage in goth rock, but they're still definitely not the same, just a progression in a certain direction of the previous.

I would like to hear whatever comes next too. I hope it's good, if it even happens.

>Why aren't there any bands that sound like The Birthday Party without being shameless rip-offs?
Because The Birthday Party had musicianship that was beyond that of these Sisters of Mercy and Joy Division knockoffs.

Not every band knows how to do complicated, angular, or abrasive guitar playing, or catchy basslines, or have a charismatic singer who can sound like someone out of a mental ward.

People who do take influence from them just rip them off, and they don't see where they got their own style from, which was from mixing punk and blues and jazz into some chaotic art rock that barely sounds like it is held together but somehow works.

Yo this is your lord and master Xytrex-666, aka Haxtron-XxX, aka DiGiTaL-VaMpIrE aka PanzerKunst99, aka DNAkraft-2000, and this is my industrial dance tutorial.
Today I'm gonna show you some ADVANCED industrial dance moves for special occasions.
Now those aren't moves you can do all the time on any song. Let's say for example your DJ isn't a complete sellout and still plays some Wumpscut or Feindflug every once in a while: this is when those tips will help you.

Okay so first off you remember how most tutorials tell you not to bang your head so that you don't hurt yourself? Well forget that shit cause this isn't what we're about. Also most tutorials tell you to basically make one or two moves per beat and to stay regular the whole time like you bob your shoulders or swing your hips on each beat? This is for basic aggrotech, not appropriate here.

The concept here is to put your Mortal Kombat expertise to good use, so, make a parcimonious use of fully-extended punches; instead, use elbow punches, short, quick punches used in rhythm with the lead rather than with the beat, and instead of standing normally, pick a more aggressive stance and swing your body forward-backwards, that way you can use the momentum to bang your head with the beat. The trick here is to also add a few kicks, but small low kicks, and to also sometimes twist your torso.

That way you've got a much more aggressive dance style which is appropriate for the more martial or older songs. Train a little a home and in no time you'll look like a real spetsnaz ninja from the future.

No need to thank me, just like and subscribe to my channel, also check out my dance crew Future Kommando for more intense industrial dance vids.
