Hey guys, yesterday I went to a music store and the owner caught me looking at some Industrial albums (I ended up buying Holy Wood by MM and I was looking at the NIN albums there), so he started chatting with me about the genre. He mentioned a couple bands for me to check which sadly I wasn't able to remember all of them.
I remembered Front Line Assembly (which he showed me the album Millennium and I liked it) and a Gary something (?)
Either way, he got me interested in exploring the genre more, wondering if you guys could help me with some essentials.
I already know the some of the mainstream ones (Marilyn Manson, Nine Inch Nails, Rob/White Zombie, Ministry, KMFDM) and some random EBM (Aesthetic Perfection, Combichrist, Angelspit) but what should I check next?

Y'all seem to have different views of what is "goth". Everyone has a different view. I've found the most important thing is the music. Without it, there is no goth. Everything else is just fluff that a decent portion of goths also happen to enjoy, and you might too. If you're a fan of any of the genres of goth rock, post-punk, dark-wave or deathrock, you're a goth. Simple as that. You could be a diehard fucking nerd submerged in all aspects of the subculture, or you could just be a fan and listener of the genres, doesn't matter. Maybe you like the music, but you're more into other genres like Industrial or Metal or what have you. You may not be as goth, one could say, but if it fits, it fits. You're whatever else + goth.

Also, it's important to realize, it's totally ok to not be a goth. You could just be a "dark" person.

I think they can look really cute sometimes, when they remove the shitty pseudo-edgy occult imagery and focus on the black/pastel color combo.

It's the fact that i've had direct experience with them on their home turf of tumblr and in real life that's given me the knowledge that a decent portion of them are not goth and only all about this aesthetic, which isn't even particularly gothic at all. Some are the "goth is what you make of it" type.

being goth doesn't mean dressing like a clown and buying horrible boots. in fact i believe the fashion is what killed it in the late 90s, early 2000s. look at all the new good goth bands; no one dresses like that. people that paint their faces white and dress they're in a play are also usually some of the most close-minded individuals in the scene.
