He was obsessed with the notion of artistry and artistic integrity being the highest ideal in life. He apparently felt betrayed by David Bowie because he'd written "don't wanna stay alive when you're 25" and then lived longer than that. He deliberately tried to live his life like some kind of romantic, tragic play, even at the expense of the people around him who cared about him and depended on him.

Of course the epilepsy and clinical depression was out of his control, but he also certainly went out of his way to deliberately aggravate those things. Not taking his medicine, staying up late, drinking too much, playing rock shows with bright lights, cheating on his wife... he wasn't doing himself any favors.

tl;dr, he was a gifted artist but not an admirable person at all
