If digital, just get a generic dj controller; if you can spend a bit, I recommend the Pioneer DDJ-RB since it's got the same interface as the big Pioneer sets that are in almost every club. Decent quality too imo.
If you wanna do vinyl, I'd honestly recommend borrowing or buying used. Daft Punk's first album comes on double LPs and is decent (because simple) learning material before building an actual collection.

It really depends where you are. In Europe and Australia, the big "new" genre (not new but starting to hit festivals) is Progressive Psytrance, stuff like Neelix, Coming Soon, Byran Kearny, Symphonix, Vini Vici etc etc

The reason for this is that there has been a shift away from 1 day festivals and dance parties as the actual industry is basically going through a bubble burst at the moment, and thus, people are actually now going to the 3 day psytrance doofs in the middle of forests and it's spreading out from there. Also with festivals becoming more expensive and more "totalitarian" in security and police presence, people find the "camp 3 days and drugs everywhere" nature of Doofs far more attractive.

Another genre that has come back with vengeance is Techno. Personally, I think Techno outside fucking sucks and it only really sounds great indoors, but raves and doofs these days tend to be pretty much 30% Prog Psy, 30% Psytrance (Darkpsy, Israeli), 30% Techno and 10% DnB.

I can't tell you what the scene is like in the US, because the US scene tends to follow different trends than the rest of us, but I would not be surprised if you start to see Prog-Psy start to make appearances at US parties. With Ozora, Boom, Neverland etc becoming some of the biggest festivals in Europe, it's only a matter of time before Psy hits the US.

As I explained, burst of the "EDM" bubble on the larger festival scale, has led to people moving out to the doof scene instead, which has always been Psytrance oriented.

Also basically Hard dance is fucking dead, so a lot of hard trance, tech-trance, hard-house etc producers have jumped ship to Psy as well since it still has a large audience.

The biggest thing holding Psy back is that it's not "radio friendly", but that often doesn't mean shit when it comes to dance genres. As we all know, radios refused to play Black Box Ride on Time, yet it still reached no 1 in the charts.

Depends on the brand, if it's a well known tank brand (Allen and Heath, Pioneer, Technics etc.) then second hand is the way to go. Otherwise for cheaper stuff buy new because the build quality will be less.

Serato's waveforms are bliss, but Rekordbox is better all round. You don't want to be dependent on the wave forms though, so I'd recommend Rekordbox. No experience of Traktor so can't say what it's like.

Pretty much, DJ equipment is expensive as fuck. Have spent probably a 15+ thousand on it over the past few years.

(CDJMKIII's,DJM800,CDJ2000s,DJM900,CDJ2000Nexus,DJM900Nexus)

That being said I use my gear for raves and hire it out and shit for radio studios and stuff.

On Allen and Heath, personally I find A&H to be less of a DJ thing and more geared towards producers, also they are a lot harder to mix with and use effects and such. It does on a good system though, have a nice sound especially with older 80s, 90s dance music though I find personally.
A&H gear is also a lot more fragile in my experience than Pioneer. Seriously, you could probably drop a 1000MKIII of a the top of a 2 story building and it would still work.
