Fresh /prod/ thread, this time with new OP and somewhat less known Lunga picture.

Talk about music production, composition, songwriting and audio engineering.

Upload clyps on

https://clyp.it/

or any other similar website. Give and receive feedback.

DO NOT post Soundcloud, YouTube or any other links where you are not anonymous (unless somebody asks you for it). That is considered self promotion and will usually result in a bad feedback.

Since pastebin is no more, and since I'm the OP, I'll post some links to YouTube channels I find useful for learning.

The bass, both melodic line and sound is awesome. What is that, one sound from the sampled vocal (is that the same girl, just played much lower?) and accompanied with some other synth? They go so well together. How long did this take you?
>>
>>67290865
Thanks anon. Around 3-4 hours. The sampling used was two clips of the same girl, pitch shifted with speed manipulation to generate the "ooo" and "aaa" feel, accompanied by a backing synth to a similar pitch with reverb. As for the drum samples, I was playing around with those.

This is my current setup, I'm learning to play keyboard in our shitty band. I got some cheap Chinese midi controller to make the Volca actually playable, but when it's connected to the monotron I get some amazing sounds. It's probably rudimentary and entry level to everyone else here but I'm really happy with it. I can't wait to get the FM once it finally gets back in stock.

This is a /prod/ thread. The point is sharing music.
Pretty much everyone I've ever seen post gear on here posts a clyp as well of them doing stuff with it. Seeing as you have rich kid levels of gear, I assumed you must know what the fuck you are doing and was looking forward to hearing it.
But instead you're just some guy who posts all his expensive gear then doesn't post any work.
Are we meant to be impressed?
Any monkey can buy gear.

What genre do you make?
>>
>>67300091
of course he is, he's insecure that lack of gear hinders his production ability, but wants to secure his sense of ability by convincing himself that having gear doesn't provide significant help in itself.

i aint a psychology graduate, but I got an A* at it during A-levels. And I'm a genius with an IQ of 231.

Anyone with that amount of gear MUST have at least tried to make music with it. This is /prod/, not facebook.
Post a haul like that and you will be expected to post clyp.
This is the first time I've seen someone with that amount of gear who won't.
He won't even say what genre he makes.

All the gear, no idea, probably.

Yes, and I'd agree with you if they were self-promoting or doing anything of the kind. As a random tip, I found the drums sounded a lot nicer when I used a lot of higher end samples, and each one is playing at a very soft velocity. Opens a lot of possibilities for sound design and gives the sections with drums a lot more character.

>>67302405
I usually use reason, but I was bored at work and I found trying a different DAW actually helped with inspiration. But, yeah, the limitations are very noticeable. Horrible latency, the sequencer can be a bit finicky, and you can't really manipulate audio beyond cropping sections of it.

I've been doing production/ music writing as a hobby on and of for... uhhhh, about 6 years? Its been a winding road for me though. If you have something specific that you are trying to accomplish though, like one genre or something, I think you can probably get gud inside of a year or two.

This took took me less time than I would normally spend on something (which is usually how the best tracks are I find). I spent about a full 8 hours on day one (it was a very slow day at work). Started out just playing with one synth, which is present throughout the track. That is how I usually start, just playing with synths!

Then I'd say I spent an additional 8 or so hours on it the next day too. That was when I really extended the loop and intro that I had, and I arranged it into a full structure. Normally I struggle to make something more than 2 mins, so I was pleased that it came out to be as long as it is.

Hope my rambling helps!

Short answer is no, it could give you an
inaccurate sense of what your track actually
sounds like.

Long answer is once you're experienced, and
you are able to start planning ahead for the mix
stage and eventually the mastering stage, you
could keep a limiter on the master to be
able to hear what your track will sound like at a
louder volume later, and if necessary compare it to other similar tracks that have already been
mastered to a commercial volume level.

Judging from the first few seconds, it seems like the "outline" of this song was probably sampled chords and vocals form some random rare funk song. It would be hard to make an exact remake without knowing what that was sampled from.

If you just want to try to figure out the chord structure yourself, start with the bass. The progression seems relatively simple, mostly minor 7th chords I think. Probably even holding the same chord over multiple bars while the bass plays other notes. I can try my hand at it if you want.

Yes, I am. Can you elaborate, please?
>>
>>67307320
I thought it was you, I recognised your outside laptop type pictures, and when I listened I could tell it was your sound.
You posted something here a while back while you were making a tune in a park somewhere in the middle of the night. People said it was funky. Sounded pretty Aphex Twin 90's era to me.
>>
>>67307388
Oh yeah I remember it. I was listening to it recently, but that's all I can do with it anymore. I'm tired of the sequences and, most importantly, the sounds.

Still a long way to go on Poly though.
>>
>>67307426
It was sounding pretty finished dude.
I know it's hard to cut the cord but you were 95% of the way there.
>>
>>67307479
lol nah c'mon, G. It was, like, 40% at most. Its probably because you aren't familiar with my other tracks, but trust me, there was a long way to go on that too.
>>
>>67307505
I'm serious, sound design was down, beat/riffs were down, the only thing you needed to do was sort out structure. Sort the tune into segments and move em about.
>>
>>67307540
Indeed, that's what I do. Like this:

Intro
Section 1
Short Bridge
Section 2
Long Bridge
Reprise of Section 1 with edits
Outro

So, you see, quite a bit.
>>
>>67307566
Do you mean to say you use the same structure for every song? Not sure I understand.
>>
>>67307594
No, that's like my skeleton I tend to use unless I'm doing some crazy junglebreakIDMcore shit. Just easier for me, in my head.
>>
>>67307616
Man I never plan that far ahead. I just start making the tune and shape it as I go.
>>
>>67307663
Yeah, same here. But its easy for me to make meandering nonsense that I can't then build into a track. So with a skeleton of "How to Make a Kimryd Track", I can actually build up meaningful loops.
>>
>>67307711
Everyone's different, whatever works right.
I played guitar for years before hitting a DAW so I've still got the "just start playing and see what happens" way of working.
>>
>>67307739
That's how I work when it comes to making patches and other sound design.
>>
how do i find the key of a sample in ableton? is there a way (spectrum?) to do this besides by ear
>>
Been listening to a lot of older Prodigy stuff. Some of their shit still feels new and fresh compared to today's EDM. I know they sample heavy but whats the best method to gather samples into something that sounds good? Is it just trial and error of sifting through tons of songs? And do they choose a key for the song first and then gather samples in that key?
>>
>>67308100
they probably find things they want to sample and then they sample them
>>
>>67308086
I usually do it by ear but if I ever get stuck I pick up a guitar and learn the riff in the sample (or at least first couple of notes) then that tells me.
>>67308100
> Is it just trial and error of sifting through tons of songs?
yes.
>And do they choose a key for the song first and then gather samples in that key?
You can pitchshift samples together, but if you shift them too far it can sound a bit funny.

Practice practice practice anon.

>>
>>67308156
I guess that would work if you were sampling a melody or a solo instrument. But I'm trying to find the key of a film score.

Here you go, its >>67307225 here. These are the chords used in that song. They are pretty much all 7th and 9th chords in the key of Cmin. Oh, and there's a passing chord.

Strangely, I had to actually tune down my entire DAW to match it. Maybe they wanted to use A= 432Hz tuning or some other hippy nonsense, or they just had to match the original sample.

When in doubt, just loop very small sections of the song you want to analyse and figure it out measure by measure if you have to. Hope this helps.
>>
>>67308219
...wut
You want the key of something with no melody?
Post a clyp of it.
>>67308174
Which DAW do you use? Which picture offended you? Fruityloops?
>>
>>67308262
Reasonbro! Best DAW.
>>
>>67308339
Thoroughly undervalued in my opinion. I'm not sure if version 9 is worth the $128 upgrade though. I'm still running version 7.

Since then, it seems like the only things they've added are: drag and drop sample loading (which they were pretty late to the game on that), "player devices" for music theory cheating, a bunch of new preset patches/ stock samples (may or may not be good), and a cool black user interface theme.

But yeah, reason for life! Other sequencers have got nothing on it, and I love the spectrum analyzer.

Often what they'd do is get chord samples and then play them out on a sampler keyboard for those classic rave stabs. Breaks are literally where you find breaks. 90s rave was a ton of cycling the same sounds over and over and prodigy are just as guilty. Then they used a lot of SFX from movies. If you want to make sampled music, you accept the nature of sampling in that you are simply taking the sounds you like and putting them in your music. But you don't want to sound like anyone else, so you think of sounds that are obtuse or remote. No one will tell you where exactly to find this. Foe unique sequences, try sound effects transposed and tied to arpeggiators. Also check out granulator. And you can use things like grossbeat to manipulate things other than drums! LFOtool can fuck a sample into a new new sound completely. Go ham with audio effect experiments, chop it to midi, chop it back to audio, throw it in session view (assuming ableton since it's what I use) and throw a shit ton of these manipulations in legato clips, grab a cup of coffee, then compile the results. Get midi information of other tracks in a song, chop the midi up, and send that information to the new instrument if you're out of ideas. steal midi. No one notices as it's reappropriated and all music is essentially recycled permutations of finite timeless patterns. Rapidly automate filepos and hope for the best. Get a chord generator in M4L. Throw it in izotope iris or granulator and twist a few knobs to make it sound like utterly new shit. Put it in paulstretch. You can also straight up look-up what sort of sound you want to make these days and find someone who has probably broken that info. I wanted to know how Skinny Puppy got metallic sounding drums. Guess how I found out? Now I can apply that technique to new things and all sorts of new connections that benefit existing knowledge begin to form.

Anybody have experience with the Prophet '08's actual keyboard? I've heard it's pretty nice, but I'm looking at buying the module edition for pretty cheap, but I don't have a nice midi keyboard to hook it up to, so I'd also be in the market of picking one of those up too. The overall price for the module + a nice midi controller with aftertouch would still be below any keyboard-edition P08 that I can find.

My question is:
Is there a decent midi keyboard with aftertouch without all of the (or minimal) frills? I don't really need the pads, faders, or knobs. Just a nice set of keys and maybe a pitch/mod wheel.

I'd get the module just to be safe, in case any keys are fucked on the old full size one (or near to wearing out).

Anyone have one? Is it worth it?

I'm not expecting a beast for the price, or even a rival to the original DX7. meh, I'll probably get just to complete my volca collection
>>
>>67308877

You can do that too. Actually a lot of the best stuff gets made this way as it's made with an intent. Squarepusher simply made all of his albums up until a much later point in this note by note, incredibly intentional way. But I assume when people ask for what to do they don't just want to hear "take shit and rep itch and rearrange until it's yours senpai" because they could splice shit together in windows movie maker or an iPhone app or something. So truth be told, there isn't a technique and it is as simple as you can possibly believe. But to save time and energy and create plentiful "happy accidents" I do things this way. Some of these are more abstract techniques, but they can lead to interesting results if you're persistent. And some of it is just some cool shit you can do if you're tired using endlessly complicated NASA mad scientist 20xx future dimensional timegate software with limitless control over audio of any kind to do something people were doing with trackers on Amiga computers in the early 90s.

Also something I recently started doing is recording whole sessions. I'll come upon some little bloop or bleep or background residual noise that I didn't see the merit in at the time (or more often than not, didn't want to break my process of working on one thing to work on something else) So I'll go in and see if I can do something with those bits. If you don't know how to make music I think this is an essential thing to do, because while working on one thing you will stumble upon 100 other things just as interesting, but simply not what you wanted at that time. A cool tip is to keep all the "not quite" versions of a sound so you have little permutations to throw into the mix here and there and make it seem like you're a technical wizard like Venetian Snares or something. Really, you're just resourceful. If you sit down and make music full time, every day you're eventually going to come up with a cool sound. Just make sure you grab it
