Can someone redpill me on Charles Mingus? Not being purposefully ignorant, I just need some help here.
I'd call myself an beginner-intermediate jazz listener. I've heard about 100 albums and it's quickly growing into something I really appreciate (been listening for about 2 years).
I've really only touched the basics and found myself really enjoying Art Blakey, Alice Coltrane, and even some of the weirder stuff like Paul Bley and Peter Brotzmann.
I cannot for the life of me figure out Mingus. I've only heard Mingus Ah Um and Let My Children Hear Music and I walked away confused both times. It seemed often times unpleasant to listen to with the problem for me mostly coming from being sometimes discordant and sometimes lacking in energy/urgency where it feels it could be used well.
I haven't even touched Black Saint because I feel I'm not ready. What the fuck is the deal?
Just listen to it man, you don't need to "be ready" for it.

this
ah um is definitely better in my opinion though
