Black footed ferret looks to nice, honey badger looks too mean, so while I don't love the final design as much as I do for example Celaeno, I think it's the best of the bunch.

I'm approaching this as being standalone and disconnected from both the series and comics. Like the Power Rangers movie.

The plot does seem lackluster if the novelization is any indication, but I'm reserving full judgement until I've actually seen the movie.
I have more confidence in the storyboarders and animators than the writers, and the art book showed that there's a lot of people who genuinely care involved.

And the songs will probably be the core thing that makes or breaks this movie, as it's essentially a musical. I hope Ingram has some good moments with this and not just the generic poppy shit he makes when he's uninspired.

Understatement of the fucking century there. Maybe it's just me, but the story (and the world and characters backing it up) is the first and foremost thing I care about. And it doesn't seem "lackluster" so much as an utter trainwreck.

To be fair we've been doing mental gymnastics in putting the show on a pedestal ever since it started. MLP:FiM has never has stellar writing. Even "10/10" episodes with near universal acclaim within the fandom like Amending Fences pale in comparison to truly great episodes from other cartoons.

The episodic nature of the show, and its target audience, demand simplicity by default. It's not what we want to hear, "it's for little girls" is a meme to us, but making the show and especially the movie inoffensive, marketable and accessible makes sense given that it's, in the end, an extended toy commercial.
MLP:FiM premiered in 2010. That's 7 years ago now. Girls who were in the 6-12 bracket back then and grew up with the show are now teenagers with some nearing 20, and most will have grown out of the show. The question then becomes: do we risk alienating the new generation of our target demographic with a movie (and show) they might not understand or find engaging because it's packed with references to 7 seasons worth of material?

The fandom, and /mlp/ particularly I guess, spends a lot of time thinking about "what could have been", but imo that's been unrealistic from the start and just setting yourself up for disappointment when it comes to anything MLP.
It's sad, but that article back then was right, and Faust should've known better. But then FiM would've never happened to begin with, and it'd be something like Filly Funtasia rather than the mixed, high potential mediocre result bag it is now.

I'll disagree with that, but that's a debate for another time. The point is that this argument is completely irrelevant: Just because FiM at its best isn't as superbly polished as other cartoons doesn't whatsoever mean we should shrug our shoulders at utter crap like this. Just 'cause you got the bronze medal instead of a gold doesn't mean you should stop competing altogether.

Maybe I wasn't quite clear, but the problem with this mindset is that by shooting for pure marketability you end up with something that has zero appeal to anyone, not just adults. The point made way back when that little girls are not stupid and can comprehend - even approve of - complex plotlines, characterizations, and a touch of darkness is still a very valid one.

I don't expect them to "pack it with references to seven seasons worth of material", and you're strawmanning pretty hard by suggesting that. What I do think is that if you produce a product set in an existing setting, you have to ensure it fits with that setting or the quality suffers as a result.

One of MLP:FiM's major qualities as a show has been to salvage something sometimes good, at the least average but not terrible, out of a mire filled with coporate mandates and dumb-down marketeering.

That's what I'm expecting, or rather hoping, from the Movie. Equestria Girls, as a premise, went and still goes against everything the show was supposed to stand for, a blood sacrifice of something hopeful so Hasbro could compete with Mattel's Monster High, with anorexic, soulless-eyed barbie dolls, and a musical high school setting channeling Glee rather than Grease.
And yet it had some good moments, some great songs even. The people involved made the best they could with what they got and what they were told to do.

Should've made them harpies and lion-people rather than talking parrots and a bipedal cat though. Either hoofed animals or mythological creatures, those were supposed to be the rules.
Then again Diamond Dogs, but those were a David Bowie reference.

The date on IMDb, October 10, is made up, Several cinemas already have planned their schedules for October, and they know nothing about the pony movie. Nobody makes G-rated movies anymore because nobody sees them.
The G-rating is supposed to mean "there's nothing significantly violent, offensive or sexual in this film, so everyone can see it". However, most people read it as "this movie is so dull that only literal babies can watch this".
So in order to get people into the theater, they have to add SOMETHING to push it to PG. With what the art book showed us, I have a feeling MLP was destined to be PG in the first place, so it's no real shock.

Canterlot is an equal split between all three races, Manehattan has an earth pony elite, and Cloudsdale one can safely assume has a pegasus elite. There are very few influential unicorns outside of Canterlot, and in Canterlot unicorns hold only one third of the positions.
