The Art of My Little Pony The Movie is out pretty much everywhere and I was finally able to get it scanned as well as I could with what I have.
Sorry it took so long to get it out, and thanks to the Anons the got the other books of the movie out. Hopefully this is worth the wait.
I usually keep this till the end, but I feel like saying from the start that this is a really pretty book to have physically. At the risk of sounding more shill-ish than usual, if you like what you see here then I encourage you to see if you can get it physically. I did as well as I could with scans, but it's gorgeous in its book if you can manage to buy it.

Also, comparing directly the Flash and Harmony builds, while the extra shading and such is a good change, there's something about the heads that still feels off. I guess I'm so used to the Flash style that it's still hard to accept the new look.

This is how magical girl shows work, you give them a new power up each time to fight the villain-- look at equestria girls for example. EQG 1 they pony up, Friendship games they get sunset shimmer, Legend of everfree they give them outright super powers and new outfits.

I finally read it all, and it's a great book. Thanks for sharing, OP. It's really interesting to see all these changes. Storm King and his minions looked so much better in some of the early designs, but I really like Tempest and Celaeno more than Cosmos and Harpy.
Story-wise, the final battle with the Hippogriffs saving the day would have been nice, and I'd have liked to see the mud trolls. But not having a rehash of the Rainbow Power thing is probably for the better. Also, the scene with the prison sounds completely anticlimactic, and I'm glad they decided to skip it.
Overall, I see both good and bad changes, and while the movie could have been completely different, I'm not sure if it would have been "better" if they had gone with their original ideas. The only thing that it's actually disappointing to me is that at some point they mention that they decided to remove from the movie a montage showing the ponies' journey to Klugetown, that's kinda shit, it didn't affect the story and it would have been a great opportunity to canonize new places that the fandom could have explored later. Speaking of fandom, it's funny that it took seven years, but we finally have an official color reference.
Anyway, I really liked the book, really interesting notes and comments, really beautiful art, I'm seriously considering getting a copy if the shipping to my shit country isn't too insanely excessive, but meanwhile, thank you again, OP, I enjoyed it a lot.

I'm not a huge fan of how safe they've decided to play things. The movie would probably have been better if they'd been a little edgier but playing it safe seems to be the most common thing that we see these days.
I've never been a fan of playing it safe with kids movies, I think people tend to look down on children a lot and think that a safe but toothless and generic film is better for them than something with a little more creativity and bite to it. Kids love cool stuff, they love scary stuff, they love awesome concepts and dangerous looking villains. I'm tired of this whole "Wrap them up in bubble wrap so nothing bad ever happens" approach to childrens' movies these days. I remember when I was a kid, I loved the Indiana Jones movies because they were cool, the villains were scary but awesome and the violence never bothered me.
If 5 year old me can watch people's faces melt in Raiders of the Lost Ark and be perfectly fine then 5 year olds today should be fine with the designs and ideas they decided to scrap for not being harmless and generic enough.

It's more that they don't want to take a risk. The bigger, bolder, more controversial ideas may get cut now because they don't want the movie to flop, but if it does well, I think they will keep pushing, to see how far they can go.
They will keep playing safe with things like equestria girls and the series will probably not change that much, but the next film could ramp stuff up if there is a good reception to the deeper stuff in the film, and the film does well overall.
