I can't possibly say because I'm biased as fuck now but I agree that her appearance played role in it, especially the eyes. Even the picture you posted almost made my heart skip a beat. She's just so beautiful, especially when she's smiling. Also the S1 facial epression were generally great and without them I wouldn't have loved the characters nearly as much.

But the personality is the biggest part of it, and for me the absolute character-defining episode with Twilight was actually Fall Weather Friends. Twilight, despite no training and despite others' dismissive attitude still partakes in the run. She has nothing to prove there. But she wants to partake in the community, she wants to experience it, she wants to feel what makes it special. She doesn't win the race, but she doesn't lose it. It was honestly mindblowing to me that neither happened. It wasn't used as a dumb joke or anything. She just did her best and she enjoyed herself, that's it. It's so simple but that instantly won me over.

That attitude was shown a lot in S1 and I always only wanted for her to succeed and be happy. WWU was one of those episodes, even in FPK bonding with Pinkie was a more important point that any other for me. Even though I didn't waifu her at the time, she was the pony I absolutely wanted to see happy no matter what.

Even though she instantly captured my attention with "tell me she's not..." and other snarky and self-aware remarks it wasn't this what I stayed for. It's Twilight's desire to learn and grow was what captured me the most. Her every success was joyful, her every failure hurt, but in the end even those she used to learn from. I was so proud of her in MMC despite its obvious flaws. Almost cried at "the princess Twilight cometh" song too. Fucking hell, the memories.
