Religious people are the biggest roleplayers out there. Just look:

So yeah, it doesn't belong here.

I believe in god but I have my own interpretation of the bible. I don't affiliate with a church because all churches do these days is preach the false doctrine of eternal punishment for finite sin, and no freedom of will in the afterlife. Makes no sense. Isn't scriptural they need to use weird definitions of things and take things out of context for revelation to be an ultimatum. meanwhile people who are logical have lost their faith altogether and persue their idols and doctrines of a separate faith, all empirical illogical philosophy spoonfed to them by professors who are obsessed with esoterica, and are paid to mold the minds of the elite to believe a certain way or be kicked out for dissent.

Dalton's theory of the atomic model was at one point just that, a theory. Today it has been proven as scientific fact using modern tools to observe individual electrons, protons, and neutrons.

Don't worry, all of those theories to understand the universe will eventually be proven true or false beyond a shadow of a doubt by using new technologies unlike deities which can't be proven one way or another, so why waste time on the futile?

Honestly, I'm not sure. I've never been to outer space, but I'm not going to claim that it isn't, just because NASA says so.

Moreover, technology isn't the end all be all, being a mere human invention meant to operate on this level of existence, which in itself is a limited scope. Some things are outside human comprehension.
>>

I said
>Proven true or false
I haven't done enough reading on the topic to have a real strong opinion about it. There have been studies done on the Earth's crust that show dramatic, centuries-long hot and cool cycles for millions of years. But there's also evidence to suggest that the natural cooling cycle inverted when fossil fuels use increased in the early 1900s (i.e. the hockey stick graph). I have an answer, but I know that someone will one day.

that's a meme? I didn't know. colleges have bias too. the people who go to them need to endure years of questioning about religion, and the easy electives are genetics if you're going for biochemistry. to these people our choices are made up of chemicals, the action potential in our minds thought transactions are based on brainscans where they looked at how blood flowed when they put patients through tests, but the reason why? no one knows.
>>
>>30685901

>billions of other human beings out there, just like you, who believe in a religion completely different from your own
>they believe in it, with equal amounts of fervency as you do your own
>...but yours isn't any more valid than there's
>it isn't more 'true' than theirs
>it isn't more proven than theirs
>at the heart of it, it's not even really different from theirs
>but you still believe in Christianity....Why?
>because you were brought up with it, taught that way? I'm sure your parents are/were lovely, but they're just people like everyone else. They followed what their parents told THEM. If you were born in ancient Greece, you'd worship Zeus. If you were born in Japan, you might've grown up to worship the Shinto gods.
>so, why yours?

Look I don't really dislike religion, despite the flaws. I know there are plenty of awesome people out there who are religious, and whose awesomeness is not impacted or influenced by that fact. If you feel you NEED religion in order to feel secure, then fine. But we have cameras and research and science these days, and zero instances of unexplained magic or a creator deity has ever been proven, or observed.

Why can you look at all these different religions in the world, thousands upon thousands that you don't believe, and decide that your's, your one religion, is any different?

Picture of cookies to perhaps make you feel better about your internal crisis.

The devout christian Sir Isaac Newton new that there was always more to learn. He set out to revolutionize our understanding of physics and mathematics, despite negativity from the church and his colleagues. He set out to find the truth knowing that it is never truly obtainable. If he's ok with that axiom than so am I.

I believe that we humans will never be able to comprehend the complex entity that is god, even though scientific research has improved over the years there will always be unanswered questions in the universe. There are many different religions in the world and the Christian God is a different interpretation of reality because humans will never be able to know everything and we have to believe in something that can give us purpose.

Fair, but
>Religion and science serve two independent, compatible purposes, with neither one contradicting the other.
I have to disagree with certain parts of that, particularly trying to explain the origins of the world. Where Christianity says the Earth is 5000 years old, the Greeks came up with deities that represent physical aspects of the world (see Gaia) and actions by said deities to explain why the world has rivers, hills, sky, etc.

Science is in direct conflict with these origins, but other than explaining where we came from, I agree that they serve independent purposes.

I'm no agnostic, but from an agnostic's perspective it goes something like this:
>science
(Formalized/articulated) study of the object; "what is there".
Attention directed to the phenomenon.
>religion
(Dramatized/intuited) study of the subject; "what I should do".
Attention directed to the noumenon.

As a Catholic, I believe the Judeo-Christian cosmology to be mythological in nature. I'm not required to believe in the literal story.
I do believe that Jesus Christ died and resurrected, and you can say this is unscientific; however, this is a matter of faith on a particular event rather than a generalized claim of scientific nature. In this sense I see no obvious clash between the two systems.

>>30686325
I regard value systems, hence ethics, as being religious in essence. Religion means to bind oneself to a transcendental principle, and values are intrinsically transcendental. You may argue that religion doesn't need to ever become organized/systematized, but that would be a hard case to make, I think.

I think maybe if you need an all-powerful being with his heavenly retinue to tell you the difference between good and evil, coupled with the bribe of heaven if you're good, and the threat of hell if you're evil, to help you make sound, wholesome value judgements that guide your day-to-day actions, then maybe you're too fucked in the head to be allowed to walk free. That's right, in a sense. Ethics is an emergent property of social groups, from an evolutionary perspective. Social values are crystallized into myths, which then lead to religious expressions. So in a sense, religions are the enshrinement of values into myths, plus the regulation of how you should act in conformity to those values.
Ethics, as a field of philosophy, is then a post-hoc analysis and articulation of these values considered as such, absolute of the religious substratum. It can of course be considered without referencing religion, like anatomy can be studied without care for evolutionary biology, but from a greater perspective, the two are still related.

no, not really, because the basis of the core curriculum is Darwinism which involves evolution. evolution on it's own is not argument against religion, BUT Darwinism specifically was anti-religion. In college professors must keep atheist doctrine present as it is defense mechanism for damage control professors say you may not assume anything, this includes consequently a structure from god. This is not inherently wrong, but paired with Darwinist mindset it breeds militant atheism. Originally this was to preserve the ego: if you take god out of the equation, anointing knowledge from god is also taken, and only empirical evidence reigns. In reality one needs to use both logic, and evidence to provide good argument. and I have graduated in broadcasting...so no not stem. I am studying stem source material though...

Well, no, a- just means "without'. So, "lacking theism". I guess many if not most atheists are a little anti-theist as well though, so the distinction might not matter.
>>

Actually the "a" in atheism specifically means "lacking/without". A more familiar version of this would probably be the "an" in anarchy. "a" is the root, "n" is the stem extender. In the case of "atheism" you can just add the latter part of the word without a stem extender.

Isn't that the "prophet of atheism" guy who always treated all religions as equal and only attacked Christianity?

The key difference between faith in religion and faith in science is that the latter is a mutable worldview always testing and updating itself with new evidence while religion is an inflexible dogma made up and re-made up by various bored goat fuckers through the ages that tries (and often fails) to make the world adhere to it instead of the other way around.

According to neurology, being affected by this particular meme is the default state.

We can argue about how being submerged in memes makes being affected by the surrounding memes makes being affected by said memes the default configuration.

tl;dr - being affected is common, not being affected is attained.

Dalton's model of the atom was only partially true, he believed that nonseperable atomic balls of mass were the smallest form of matter. The fact that electrons, protons, and neutrons are the elements that compose individual atoms shows that his theory was disproven as was your knowledge. That being said, evidence showed that he was more correct than the prevailing theories of his time, while at the same time drawing from much earlier theories.
