Guess I'll kick things off with a couple screenshots of a DOS-inspired project I've been working on, which is, funny enough, the basis of this threads edition.

It sticks to using only the 16 colors from DOS games with EGA graphics like Space Quest and Maniac Mansion, but has a 16:9 ratio resolution. ("Shovel Knight-ing" is what'd I'd refer to using only some of the limitations of an emulation.)

I'm planning on making it something like an RPG with turn-based combat, something iirc like Fire Emblem or Advance Wars. Stats that can be raised from battling affect how your units perform.
You may only play as a single pony, but your base Magic stat allows you to summon 1 clone familiar that you control on the board. As the Magic stat goes up, you can summon more clones to help. An idea to allow the player to tweak the stats of clones outside of battle (or perhaps create more summon types) would be ideal to prevent samey-boring gameplay with no variety or something along those lines.
At this point, combat has yet to be made.

EGA graphics uses 16 (out of the 64 possible) colors for the entire screen. I think it's safe to assume that this would likely use a fixed palette as well.

Correct, that game will only use these 16 colors, using dithering to make the illusion like there are more. This dithering can be seen on the grass, as the greenish-blue color is just dark cyan and dark green checkerboarded.

Nah, I just like to harken back to simpler times, is all. I like to put limits like these on myself because it forces me out of my comfort zone. I'm used to utilizing rotation, scaling, millions of colors, high quality sound, etc. but these set older limits force me to try and be creative with how to approach things.

I have a resolution problem.

It uses pixel art, but you can zoom in and out. in itself this isnt that big of a deal for me, but the problem is the menus. When you change the zoom level, the terrain and menus will have different sized pixels, which is a bit unpleasant to look at.

Possible solutions:

What are you using to make the game?
If it's Game Maker Studio, then use the Draw GUI events due to the main view/camera size and GUI layer size being separate. The GUI layer (by default) always stays the size of the window.

...I'm having a hard time creating a "container" of items
now I'm doing things small, I have just an object that generate a random number of weapon and armor items and puts them inside his inventory
but it's all hard scripted inside of it, therefore I don't have the flexibility I want with unreal engine's blueprints
I need to dynamically import my probability data with a list of the game items I have but you can't do that in blueprint
I'll need to use c++ but for now is good enough

I wrapped all my file IO (textures, sounds, dialogs, templates, log files, configs, saves) in a class that completely decouples it from the rest of the game, I can now change the file format without having to hunt down the pieces that were sprinkled though the rest of my code, changing from XML to SQLite for character data for example can now be done by replacing only 1 method call, and maybe 1-2 parameters (plus I can easily load from memory for unit tests).

So good news and bad news. The bad is I highly doubt I'll release a demo. It complicates things and would slow down development. My time is sadly limited as is, I need all of the time I can get into making the full version. The good news is the game is absolutely going to be finished, that I can promise or my honor be damned. I just hope I can get it done in a reasonable time frame, which would be at least 1 year of dedicated work I imagine.

Regardless, thank you for the kind words and encouragement, believe it or not these kinds of messages give me a ton of energy when I'm not feeling up to par, and I'm amazed that with just a few images and a song from the soundtrack people already want to play the game. It'll be worth the wait, promise.

That's just the way it goes. Pretty soon I'll be deleting Everfree Outpost's old data file compiler (5,000 LOC) and replacing it with a new one that's half the size. The time I spent writing the old one (probably 4+ weeks in total) wasn't a waste, though. The old data compiler might be kind of shitty, but it worked well enough that I could keep making progress on other parts of the project, and I couldn't have written the new one without the experience I gained from building and using the original version.

Not gonna say you should or shouldn't, but I will warn you. Rewriting (and then working out all the new bugs) will probably take a lot longer than you think. Also, having basically no visible progress for months on end can be kind of demoralizing. Before you go ahead with the rewrite, I'd suggest making a list of what you specifically hope to improve by doing it. It's probably only going to be worth it if you have several major improvements you want to make across multiple sections of the codebase.

but as time goes... you need something fresh to keep your relationship interesting
the more invested part of the fandom needed more and more extreme content, not all artists are willing to make everything
I'm a writefag myself, and I'm not willing to write sex scenes for example
so... week after week, month after month, the more extreme content pushed away the casual and genuine slice of the fandom, both users and content creators
we were already isolated, and this created resonance bubble where the normies users that aren't comfortable with it just go away
the social confirmation did the rest, making more or less all users becoming more and more toxic
we used to "love and tolerance" unironically, welcome everyone in the herd and keep an open mind making friends like the show taught us
this is a trend I've seen with many fandoms

Coming close to releasing Within the Hinterland. Not super happy with how it came out, didn't really fit my vision when I first thought the concept up.
It's your basic survival strategy game. Collect resources during the day, defend during the night. At this point it's just a matter of giving it some play testing because I've played it so much I can't even tell if it's fun anymore.

The only thing to do now is add "tutorial hints" for controls and what to do. The only reason it's taking so long is because A, I have no inspiration to make it anymore, and B, I needed to add keyboard controls. It's made for controller in mind, but a lot of people don't own a controller

That said, I've just found a screencap that fits more the bill, of you talking about parental feedback, but that's back from 2013.
