I really hope this airing spawns new art of Daybreaker (and fanfiction).

I feel like this episode implies that Luna was ultimately the architect of her own misery (and subsequent transformation into Nightmare Moon). Celestia is nothing but nice to her sister, albeit harboring some inferences about how Luna operates that seed some mild jealously, but Luna is weary, passive aggressive, and not forthcoming about how she feels. She just saunters in during the morning, tired and grumpy, and automatically assumes she's not being appreciated.

Crack head-canon time: Nightmare Moon existed only in the waking world. In the dream world, Luna never became NMM. She was still herself and still protected ponies from nightmares, even after NMM was banished to the moon.

Ponies still met Luna in their dreams, but they didn't realize she was the same pony as the terrible creature Princess Celestia had banished all those years ago. Luna may have visited Celestia in her dreams as well, which would've been extremely uncomfortable for the Princess of the Sun:

The first thing the map did was send all six (which is something it's never done since) to find Glimmer and free her village. The map needed the six to make contact with her for some reason so that seems to be the reason it sent all of them.

Look at it from her perspective. She only has herself to talk to and ponies take her for granted. Celestia has all these parties and celebrations and events and Luna only has Nightmare Night, which isn't exactly a happy, appreciation time. 90 percent of dreams go forgotten.

If ponies REALLY appreciated her, would it be that hard to stay up late one night and say hello, or thank you? Or hell, even a letter? Would it kill them to write a note thanking her for keeping their dreams safe?

It's made worse by Celestia, who only appreciates Luna on HER time. Oh geeze, she just spent the entire night working her ass off and now she's about to go to bed? Breakfast at the tail end of her night, when she's grumpy and exhausted sounds perfect! Celestia does it to make herself happy for trying. If she wanted to make Luna happy, she'd stay up late and start Luna's night off on a good note. The whole point is that neither of them are willing to see things from the other's perspective, because you could say much of the same things about Luna from Celestia's perspective.

But having watched this it seems like she brings all her unhappiness on herself and makes herself feel underappreciated. She makes no effort to connect with other ponies outside of the dream world and resents Celestia without actually voicing her concerns.

The reason why Luna felt underappreciated 1,000 years ago was because ponies went to sleep at night and thus didn't ooh and aah at her night sky. It's not pones' fault that she sleeps during the day and they sleep at night. Luna was just whining about simple facts.

Didn't have the magic and she needed to actually sleep sometimes, you know. I thought it was pretty clearly stated that Celestia's magic couldn't affect anything in the dream world at the very least, though I don't think it explicitly states that she can't enter dreams without Luna. All Celestia did was raise and lower the moon. Luna did all the other dream and night related shit.

As for a possible explanation for Glimmer, I think it's worth pointing that she was there, at ground zero, when Dash earner her cutie mark and united the mane6. It's not unthinkable that Glimmer's messing with time-magic and the map has accidentally somehow corrupted it to respond to herself as well.

Had to watch the episode late today, let's do a personal review:
>For whatever you may think it was worth, it was a "princesses episode"
>Contrary to the vocal opinion I think the inclusion of Starlight was handled well, i.e. as a second generation student of Celestia, and Twilight had an effective role as guide, right between being unnecessary and interfering

I'm not sure if that can be said. Either way it's kind of a plot hole how Celestia has raised the moon for a thousand years using her own magic but now it's exclusively Luna's job. I'm putting too much thought into this clearly but if raising the moon felt differently this time, she would have probably said this. I have no clue whether or not to believe that the sun is greater than or equal to the moon, in terms of "magical inertia". To me it all comes down to the fact that Celestia's double job story is fundamentally incongruent with the Royal Sisters' current duties and this cannot be blamed on individual episodes anymore.

Nigga most of us who gave a shit about the lore errors watched the episode on canadian time, there was much bitching about starlight and the sisters attitude.

To piss you off even more, i'll point out that her only input on the friendship problem was to switch their cutie marks.
Her bland talk about "You should appreciate your sister more" (To fucking CELESTIA of all people) did jack shit and she did nothing else to fix their problems.
The map literally sent her only because she knew a spell and would sperg out when the sisters started arguing, because immortal / long lived magical alicorn sisters who've lived for over a thousand years are as capable as 10 year olds when it comes to disagreements and apparently dont remember the consequences of their last falling out.
Starlight didnt save the day through friendship, she fucked up hard using magic AGAIN and the princesses solved things on their own despite her 'help'

A good character shouldn't require other characters to "devolve" just to artificially inflate their importance. If you need to start stripping away from other characters in order to prop up a new one, chances are the character is badly written and unnecessary to the plot.

I understand the premise of the episode, what I'm saying is that the necessity of Starlight to this plot is entirely dependent on the viewer being willing to accept that this is a situation Celestia and Luna wouldn't be able to resolve on their own. However I'd like to thank you for your response as its given me some insight into the mindset of the average glimmerfag. The average glimmerfag has the mental capacity of a four year old, which is evidently the audience Glimmer was intended to appeal to.

We do see something fairly similar in this season premier though, when Celestia is rambling about what to do with Twilight, and her nearby guards are unsure how to react.

Yes. She's a deep, multidimensional character with many facets to her personality. Being wise and motherly does not magically prevent you from having a breakdown if you're for example suddenly ripped out of your comfort zone.

He's both write and wrong: Glimmer being unnecessary isn't specifically related to the bad characterization of the Sisters, but that she neither contributed anything to the episode herself (as the map-call implied) or learned anything from the Sisters. She's an extraneous figure, shoved in for the sake of having her shoved in.

Moreover, if the Sisters had been properly characterized, there'd have been even less reason for Glimmer to be there. She's pure filler, taking up time and proudly proclaiming her own importance while never actually adding anything meaningful to the core plot of the episode.

What I said is that - as an unaffiliated third party who does absolutely nothing to actually aid the Sisters in their problem - she contributes nothing to the episode itself. If anything, I think a pony (not necessarily Twilight) attached to one of the Sisters or another would have been a far greater choice - both letting us see their behavior from the eyes of a character attached to them on a day-to-day basis, and expanding the world of the Canterlot palace rather than relying on shoving in existing characters.

It kinda does. They've lived with each for hundreds, maybe thousands of years. How have they not overcome this already? People want princess episodes but still want them to act perfect, which goes against the show's lesson based structure.
